Working with the Duquesne University School of Nursing and Office of Military and Veteran Students, Duquesne’s Gumberg Library used grant funds to purchase a collection of resources that address the social, economic, physical, and psychological issues veterans face in the transition to civilian and student life. The library collaborated with campus partners to select materials that fit the needs of students and faculty, and purchased approximately 170 new books, ebooks, DVDs, and streaming videos. As a result of the project the library also increased programming and outreach to veteran students on campus. This article discusses the methods used to select materials, the marketing efforts to promote the new collection, usage to date, and the library’s plans to further enhance veteran student engagement with both the library and the university.

Abstract:
One of the ironies of teaching mathematics is that real-life problems, although interesting, are often too difficult to consider in a secondary school classroom. Consequently the problems that are used in texts are often somewhat contrived. While working at the local weather office, I came upon several applications of trigonometry that are both interesting and instructive for high school students. The problems require that some background knowledge be presented to the students, but often they will have at least heard about the ideas from the nightly weather forecasts on television. These ideas make an interesting discussion for both teacher and student.

Abstract:
Education is something that is important can provide knowledge that can improve the characteristics of life, both in personal life, community life, and state life. A New Student Admission, often referred to as PPDB, isan annual activity which is the selection stages for prospective new students organized by school-level committees under the supervision and coordination of the Office of Education. This year, PPDB uses a new system, the zoning system, which aims to equalize students. The purpose of this study was to describe how the implementation of Permendikbud number 14 in 2018 and what are the factors inhibiting the implementation of Permendikbud number 14 in 2018 on the admission of new students based on zoning. This research was designed using an empirical legal research approach. The results of this study indicated that the implementation of Permendikbud No. 14 of 2018 in High Schools / Kejuraan especially in the South Kuta area has not been running effectively because there was one school that received protests from students' parents which resulted in the process of hiring new students being hindered. In addition, this study also showed that the inhibiting factors for the implementation of Permendikbud No. 14 of 2018 on the admission of new students based on zoning consisted of internal factors, namely the committee was less selective in examining student requirements and the application provided was experiencing interference, and external factors namely location, community mainset, and domicile certificate.

Students presenting with syncope and/or seizure occur occasionally in the school setting. Several studies have shown that seizures as well as respiratory distress are the most common medical emergencies that prompt school nurses and staff to contact emergency medical services (EMS) to transport students to the closest emergency department (Knight 1999, Olympia 2005). It is important to develop a differential diagnosis for syncope, to initiate stabilization of the student with life-threatening symptoms, and to triage these students to an appropriate level of care (back to the classroom, home with their guardian with follow-up at their primary health care provider’s office, or directly to the closest emergency department via EMS). 1. The Universal or Variable Linked Life Assurance policy has been issued by a number of companies in the United States of America and in the United Kingdom, and it is now reasonably familiar in the marketplace. It does not appear to have received much attention in actuarial literature, perhaps because of its simplicity, though a paper has been presented to the Institute of Actuaries Students' Society (Sheraton, 1984). So far as I know the corresponding Variable Linked Life Annuity has not been issued by any office, and some of its features are slightly different from those of the Life Assurance policy.

Abstract:
Student affairs records are essential components in addressing basic functionalities in the university environment as they serve diverse purposes such as the life of a student on the campus. However, these records are often not preserved properly especially at universities in rural settings. This study assessed student affairs records, with consideration to preservation strategy at the University of Venda in South Africa. Data were collected through interviews with ten purposively selected staff members from student affairs division. The key findings reveal that while the university has an archive service within the library, the responsibility of preserving student records lies with records management division that resides within the registrar’s office. However, there is no preservation strategy for student affairs records. It is concluded that collaboration between student affairs and records and archives department enhance to collect the student affairs records. A comprehensive study on the management of student affairs records in South African universities is recommended.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore the career and life paths of male and female Senior Student Affairs Officers (SSAOs). The study used Super’s components of Work Salience and Career maturity to examine gender differences and commonalities of individuals in their climb to a SSAO position. Specifically, the study examined the role of family and personal life and the intersection with career. Employing qualitative methods in the form of semi-structured interviews, this study investigated the following research questions: 1. How do female SSAOs describe their life and career development according to Super’s factors of Work Salience and Career Maturity? 2. How do male SSAOs describe their life and career development according to Super’s factors of Work Salience and Career Maturity? 3. How do male and female SSAOs life and career development experiences compare to one another according to Super’s factors of Work Salience and Career Maturity? The transcripts were analyzed using open and focused coding to find themes present in the data. The coding process was reviewed by a peer as well as a panel of experts to ensure trustworthiness. The findings of the study indicated themes regarding caregiving, work experience, leisure activities, marital status, scheduling, and career planning.

Abstract:

The purpose of this qualitative research, guided by Black Feminist Thought, was to examine the experiences of African American women senior student affairs officers to understand the strategies they utilized to advance their careers. Participants included six vice presidents/chancellors for student affairs (reporting directly to the president of the institution) and one dean of students reporting to the vice president for student affairs. The participants’ recounted raced and gendered experiences during their journey to becoming a senior student affairs officer into their journey of being a senior student affairs officer. Their shared experiences were based on tokenism, hyperawareness of systemic racism and sexism, and perceptions of leadership styles verses angry Black woman. They also reported support systems such as mentors, sponsors, spirituality, and family that influence their thoughts, decisions, and motivation to continue in the field of student affairs and ultimately in higher education. The implications of the study encourages and challenges African American women and other women of color who are administrators to share their professional experiences to continue to enlighten scholarship and practice while encouraging institutions to provide funding, personnel resources, and training for all employees.

Ogawa-Yukitomo, Nicole S. "Japanese Office Ladies: A Life of Luxury." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2015. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/588.

Abstract:
This study is an initial attempt to investigate the relationship between the portrayal of Japanese OL or “Office Ladies” in different media: formal scholarly studies on OL and informal sources such as recruiting lectures, online articles, and Japanese magazines that target OL, specifically CanCam, Sweet, and JJ. The term OL has generally been used to describe a short-term low-paying clerical position, requiring minimal skills, for young women primarily age 20s to 30s. The OL position can thus be seen as a gendered profession with little corporate mobility. However, most of the websites and magazines for these working women feature articles on the latest styles and are full of fashionable attractive women advertising the latest designer goods and the up and coming designer must-have brands of the season. With the skyrocketing of the Japanese economy in the pose-WWII era, women have become the country’s primary consumers, and OL appear to be playing a central role in this new consumer-heavy culture. Thus using both scholarly and primary sources, this thesis will explore this gap between the reality of OL and the romanticized version portrayed in these magazines. Although scholarly sources often depict the OL lifestyle to be tedious, gendered, and overall unfavorable for workingwomen in Japan, my thesis hopes to explore the positive aspects of the OL lifestyle as well and examine the reasons why women buy into this OL culture via these magazines and sites.

Abstract:
Usability evaluation of collaborative writing system for education usage is very essential to improve its functionality to make it effective, efficient and satisfactory for future use. In this thesis, the usability of web office (ThinkFree doc) i.e. one of collaborative tool was tested using mix research approach. Usability evaluation was done in step by step process, where usability test was conducted using think aloud protocol and observation during testing was noted down. Test results were then analyzed and questionnaire was designed for quantitative survey. Questionnaires were then distributed among those students who have been using Thinkfree doc for educational collaborative work. Interviews were conducted with all selected participants individually for results validations. During usability evaluation process positive and negative effects regarding software‟s usage were noted down. The result revealed that overall system‟s response is very slow. The software needs to improve its processing speed to make it more efficient for future use. The system also needs to improve overall functionality (e.g. collaborative work, synchronization, uploading and track changes etc) to provide accurate and complete results according users‟ requirements.

Oduyemi, Olufolahan Ifeoluwa. "Life cycle costing methodology for sustainable commerical office buildings." Thesis, University of Derby, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10545/581569.

Full text
Abstract:
The need for a more authoritative approach to investment decision-making and cost control has been a requirement of office spending for many years now. The commercial offices find itself in an increasingly demanding position to allocate its budgets as wisely and prudently as possible. The significant percentage of total spending on buildings demands a more accurate and adaptable method of achieving quality of service within the constraints on the budgets. By adoption of life cycle costing techniques with risk management, practitioners have the ability to make accurate forecasts of likely future running costs. This thesis presents a novel framework (Artificial Neural Networks and probabilistic simulations) for modelling of operating and maintenance historical costs as well as economic performance measures of LCC. The methodology consisted of eight steps and presented a novel approach to modelling the LCC of operating and maintenance costs of two sustainable commercial office buildings. Finally, a set of performance measurement indicators were utilised to draw inference from these results. Therefore, the contribution that this research aimed to achieve was to develop a dynamic LCC framework for sustainable commercial office buildings, and by means of two existing buildings, demonstrate how assumption modelling can be utilised within a probabilistic environment. In this research, the key themes of risk assessment, probabilistic assumption modelling and stochastic assessment of LCC has been addressed. Significant improvements in existing LCC models have been achieved in this research in an attempt to make the LCC model more accurate and meaningful to estate managers and high-level capital investment decision makers A new approach to modelling historical costs and forecasting these costs in sustainable commercial office buildings is presented based upon a combination of ANN methods and stochastic modelling of the annual forecasted data. These models provide a far more accurate representation of long-term building costs as the inherent risk associated with the forecasts is easily quantifiable and the forecasts are based on a sounder approach to forecasting than what was previously used in the commercial sector. A novel framework for modelling the facilities management costs in two sustainable commercial office buildings is also presented. This is not only useful for modelling the LCC of existing commercial office buildings as presented here, but has wider implications for modelling LCC in competing option modelling in commercial office buildings. The processes of assumption modelling presented in this work can be modified easily to represent other types of commercial office buildings. Discussions with policy makers in the real estate industry revealed that concerns were held over how these building costs can be modelled given that available historical data represents wide spending and are not cost specific to commercial office buildings. Similarly, a pilot and main survey questionnaire was aimed at ascertaining current level of LCC application in sustainable construction; ranking drivers and barriers of sustainable commercial office buildings and determining the applications and limitations of LCC. The survey result showed that respondents strongly agreed that key performance indicators and economic performance measures need to be incorporated into LCC and that it is important to consider the initial, operating and maintenance costs of building when conducting LCC analysis, respondents disagreed that the current LCC techniques are suitable for calculating the whole costs of buildings but agreed that there is a low accuracy of historical cost data.

Mgweba, Sikho. "Student expectations of future life roles." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/6840.

Full text
Abstract:
Work and family are the two most significant life domains for most individuals (Greenhaus, Collins & Shaw, 2003). Compositional and structural changes in the work and family domains over the past few decades such as: dual-earner couples and single working parents, the decline of traditional gender roles and a movement toward egalitarian family structures have rendered increased understanding and reconciliation of family and working life (Steil, 2007). Such work- family considerations, however, are not only important for adults within the workforce, but also for young adults who are in the process of making future family and career decisions, and are about to enter the workforce (Westring & Ryan, 2011). The purpose of this study was to explore how students understand and distinguish between different life roles, and therefore gain insight into the expectations they have of their future life roles. Using Kelly's Repertory Grids Technique, qualitative data was obtained through fifteen interviews with postgraduate students from the University of Cape Town. The data was analysed using a combination of thematic analysis and frequency counts. The reliability of the results was ensured by conducting two sets of reliability checks. Following thematic analysis, eight dyadic themes emerged: self-interest- selflessness, demanding- relaxing, collaborationindependence, freedom-restriction, affective- unaffective, boring- enjoyment, structuredflexible, and personal satisfaction- obligation. These themes revealed values and attributes students perceive as significant in the construal of their future life roles. The results were interpreted and discussed in light of existing research and literature in the field.

Abstract:
It is long understood that many students do not take advantage of faculty assistance outside of class. In an attempt to improve the use of office hours, faculty have made efforts to schedule times that are most convenient to students and are most likely to have high attendance; before homework assignments are due or examinations are being held. Despite these efforts, students rarely take advantage of this support service. As a first attempt to improve student engagement, the number of office hours held by teaching assistants (TAs) was increased, expecting that students would feel more comfortable asking for help from TAs rather than faculty. However, office hour attendance was no better for TAs than for faculty. Yet, exam performance continued to indicate that many students could benefit from help outside the classroom. In an effort to better understand this trend, a survey was conducted to examine reasons why students choose not to attend office hours. In particular, we were looking for the effect of social norms, student’s perception of their understanding of the material and their need for extra help, as well as the use of other resources such as on-line solutions to homework problems and cooperative learning with other students. This survey was conducted in six classes (300 students) comprising our engineering science core curriculum, including: Statics, Mechanics of Materials, Dynamics, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics and Heat Transfer. Results indicated that of all the factors tested, the only ones that positively correlated to low office hour attendance were (1) students felt they understood the material well enough and did not need extra help, (2) students procrastinated and therefore did not have time to seek help before homework was due, and (3) students who spent less overall time studying outside of class attended fewer office hours. The data did not support our initial premise that students who attended more office hours performed better. Further study is warranted to explore behaviors that enhance student performance. It is expected that results from these studies will provide information to improve students’ efficient use of time outside the classroom.

Abstract:
The Erasmus international mobility programme represent a significant step in a student’s development. In the past decades, millions of European students gained experience and lifelong learning period from prestigious universities abroad. Erasmus students are seen as independent people, curious about cultures and languages, open to new ideas and especially predisposed to become entrepreneurs. This study was designed to identify the entrepreneurial attitude of Erasmus students in order to ascertain the contribution of international mobility. For this purpose, the expectations of international students who benefited from the Erasmus Plus Programme were compared to the level of satisfaction after completing the international mobility programme at Institute of Business Administration (IAE), University of Sophia Antipolis, Nice. Factors that most influenced students’ departure in Erasmus mobility are academic and professional opportunities abroad. The data for this study was collected using a questionnaire and sent in collaboration with International Relations Office of IAE Nice. The results indicate that international mobility had a high impact on student’s self-confidence and relational skills. Regarding professional and social life, the entrepreneurial attitude was increased by the Erasmus experience.

Abstract:
Early research into the digital environment pointed to a strict division between online and offline. The terms “online” and “offline” are used to distinguish between activities implemented through intermediation of different technologies, such as computers. Online environment is seen as a distinct social sphere that is disconnected from offline life events. The credibility of the online environment and the veracity of social aspects are frequently questioned, since digital communities lack a physical presence. The aim of the study is to look at and determine the peculiarities of division between online and offline in several video game communities, using Bourdieu’s concepts of capital, habitus and field. The perception of digital authenticity by members of video game communities is also examined. A variety of methodological approaches were used to determine how video game communities perceive online and offline practices: playing out a video game, semi-structured interviews, media analysis, and field notes. The results show that the traditional division between physical and digital reality is ethically complex and problematic.

Abstract:
Office hours are available for students to receive extra help outside of class. Unfortunately, this resource is often underutilized by students despite efforts to schedule convenient and accessible office hour times. Previous survey results from students attending a variety of courses in Mechanical Engineering at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) have shown a positive correlation between low office hour attendance and the following factors: (i) high understanding of course material, (ii) procrastination and lack of time to seek help before deadlines, and (iii) low time studying materials outside of class. Interestingly, the results of this survey did not support the hypothesis that students who attended more office hours performed better. A new homework grading policy was instituted in Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics I in the fall and spring semesters of the 2013 academic year at RIT. Under this policy, students were required to visit office hours to receive credit for completion of assigned weekly problems. Implementation of this policy has provided quantitative information regarding participation and timing of office hour visits. This investigation will examine the effects of attendance and timing of office hour participation on metrics of performance including final class grades and theoretical understanding as measured by performance on multiple choice test questions. Results presented here suggest that the office hour grading system resulted in high participation rates across a broad range of students. Higher office hour participation rates had a positive impact on student performance in long answer exam problems and low impact on performance in multiple choice questions. While performance was a stronger function office participation at the of end of term than in week five, early semester participation rates can be used as a tool to help identify students at risk of dropping a class or receiving a poor grade.

Abstract:
The troops of the national guard of the Russian Federation are equipped with modern models of weapons, special equipment, Informatization tools, engineering weapons that have artificial intelligence in their composition are being developed, " etc., which causes an increase in the requirements for the quality of professional training of future officers. The increasing complexity of military professional activities, the avalanche-like increase in information, the need to develop the ability to quickly and accurately make and implement well-known and own engineering solutions in an unpredictable military environment demonstrates that the most important tasks of modern higher education are not only providing graduates with a system of fundamental and special knowledge and skills, but also developing their professional independence, and this led to the concept of engineering and creative potential in the list of professionally important qualities of an officer. To expedite a special mechanism system compact intense clarity through cognitive visualization of the educational material, thickening of educational knowledge through encoding, consolidation and structuring Principle of cognitive visualization stems from the psychological laws in accordance with which the efficiency of absorption is increased if visibility in training does not only illustrative, but also cognitive function, which leads to active inclusion, along with the left and right hemispheres of the student in the process of assimilation of information, based on the use of logical and semantic modeling, which contributes to the development of engineering and creative potential.
