Working with the Duquesne University School of Nursing and Office of Military and Veteran Students, Duquesne’s Gumberg Library used grant funds to purchase a collection of resources that address the social, economic, physical, and psychological issues veterans face in the transition to civilian and student life. The library collaborated with campus partners to select materials that fit the needs of students and faculty, and purchased approximately 170 new books, ebooks, DVDs, and streaming videos. As a result of the project the library also increased programming and outreach to veteran students on campus. This article discusses the methods used to select materials, the marketing efforts to promote the new collection, usage to date, and the library’s plans to further enhance veteran student engagement with both the library and the university.

Abstract:
One of the ironies of teaching mathematics is that real-life problems, although interesting, are often too difficult to consider in a secondary school classroom. Consequently the problems that are used in texts are often somewhat contrived. While working at the local weather office, I came upon several applications of trigonometry that are both interesting and instructive for high school students. The problems require that some background knowledge be presented to the students, but often they will have at least heard about the ideas from the nightly weather forecasts on television. These ideas make an interesting discussion for both teacher and student.

Abstract:
Education is something that is important can provide knowledge that can improve the characteristics of life, both in personal life, community life, and state life. A New Student Admission, often referred to as PPDB, isan annual activity which is the selection stages for prospective new students organized by school-level committees under the supervision and coordination of the Office of Education. This year, PPDB uses a new system, the zoning system, which aims to equalize students. The purpose of this study was to describe how the implementation of Permendikbud number 14 in 2018 and what are the factors inhibiting the implementation of Permendikbud number 14 in 2018 on the admission of new students based on zoning. This research was designed using an empirical legal research approach. The results of this study indicated that the implementation of Permendikbud No. 14 of 2018 in High Schools / Kejuraan especially in the South Kuta area has not been running effectively because there was one school that received protests from students' parents which resulted in the process of hiring new students being hindered. In addition, this study also showed that the inhibiting factors for the implementation of Permendikbud No. 14 of 2018 on the admission of new students based on zoning consisted of internal factors, namely the committee was less selective in examining student requirements and the application provided was experiencing interference, and external factors namely location, community mainset, and domicile certificate.

Students presenting with syncope and/or seizure occur occasionally in the school setting. Several studies have shown that seizures as well as respiratory distress are the most common medical emergencies that prompt school nurses and staff to contact emergency medical services (EMS) to transport students to the closest emergency department (Knight 1999, Olympia 2005). It is important to develop a differential diagnosis for syncope, to initiate stabilization of the student with life-threatening symptoms, and to triage these students to an appropriate level of care (back to the classroom, home with their guardian with follow-up at their primary health care provider’s office, or directly to the closest emergency department via EMS). The Universal or Variable Linked Life Assurance policy has been issued by a number of companies in the United States of America and in the United Kingdom, and it is now reasonably familiar in the marketplace. It does not appear to have received much attention in actuarial literature, perhaps because of its simplicity, though a paper has been presented to the Institute of Actuaries Students' Society (Sheraton, 1984). So far as I know the corresponding Variable Linked Life Annuity has not been issued by any office, and some of its features are slightly different from those of the Life Assurance policy.

Abstract:
Student affairs records are essential components in addressing basic functionalities in the university environment as they serve diverse purposes such as the life of a student on the campus. However, these records are often not preserved properly especially at universities in rural settings. This study assessed student affairs records, with consideration to preservation strategy at the University of Venda in South Africa. Data were collected through interviews with ten purposively selected staff members from student affairs division. The key findings reveal that while the university has an archive service within the library, the responsibility of preserving student records lies with records management division that resides within the registrar’s office. However, there is no preservation strategy for student affairs records. It is concluded that collaboration between student affairs and records and archives department enhance to collect the student affairs records. A comprehensive study on the management of student affairs records in South African universities is recommended.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to analyze the entrepreneurial intentions of higher education students in a private higher education institution (HEI), enrolled in the following courses: Business Management, Hospitality Management, Tourism and Business Relations.Design/methodology/approachA quantitative methodology was used through the application of a questionnaire in a private HEI located in the northern region of Portugal and 228 valid responses were collected.FindingsWe have found out that (1) the elder the students are, the higher is the probability that they will consider entrepreneurship as the first option to enter the job market; (2) the courses of Business Management and Hotel Management are those that influence the entrepreneurial intentions most positively; (3) the more prepared a student feels in order to start a business, the more likely he will become an entrepreneur; (4) to consider entrepreneurship as the first option to enter the job market is positively influenced by the dimensions of the Attitude Toward Enterprise (ATE), namely, leadership, creativity, achievement and personal control; (5) to have a business idea could be motivated by the course in which the students are enrolled in, if they feel they are prepared to start a business, and by the dimensions of ATE.Practical implicationsHEIs and/or regional governments may have an entrepreneurship support office, where students can get assistance in the process of creating their companies and develop innovative entrepreneurial models adapted to older students. The creation of “senior entrepreneurial ecosystems” can be an interesting path to be explored. HEIs can make extracurricular activities available to students. Policymakers must introduce entrepreneurship to primary and secondary education.Originality/valueThis study increases the understanding of the individual characteristics of the students in a private HEI, as well as the courses that positively influence entrepreneurial intentions.

Abstract:
In this article, we have studied constituents that comprised everyday life of students of the Kyiv Commercial Institute before the start of the WWI. This topic has not received much attention from scientists, but it is nevertheless important, since it helps to "take a look" without redundant fervour at the real atmosphere of student life and that of the Kyiv populace in early 20th century on the whole, furthermore when it's provided by evidences of contemporaries of that time. The special attention is devoted to things that were not usual for everyday life such as theft incidents, foreign trips of students (despite bad material situation), red-tape when receiving documents, spreading of untruthful information by students about their peers, etc. In this paper, we explore such facets of everyday life as how students got married and what they did when they were sick. In particular, the current at that time procedure provided that a permission to get married could be obtained from a university's administration, where a student studied. The thing is that Offices of the Registrar in universities checked personal files of those who requested such a permission for any reasons to refuse them. If students were sick for a long time, they had to provide a sick note from their attending doctor or medical institution where they were being treated. The author also has found an unappealing aspect in every-day life of students namely the fact that sometimes they were cruel toward the staff of a university. Naturally, studying was a considerable part of every-day life of students. However, this part of every-day life of students having been studied a lot by other scientists, it has not been examined in this paper. We mentioned only several cases of obtaining a second education or transferring of a student from one university to another as well as the enrolment procedure. In respect of the last component we have found out a number of documents that requested protection during enrolment.

Abstract:
The first post-Reformation English canonist in our series seems, on the face of his curriculum vitae a very different kind of lawyer from the medieval writers previously described. He was not a doctor of law, and seems to have spent a mere three years at university. He went up to Oxford as a relatively mature student (in his early 20s) in 1576, having already served an apprenticeship as clerk in the registar's office at York and having become a notary public and actuary of the Consistory Court in the early 1570s. He was a local boy, born and educated in the city of York, and came to the attention of the ecclesiastical authorities as a promising clerk at about the age when more fortunate youngsters were sent to Oxford or Cambridge. Swinburne's study therefore began in the office, and in the routines of clerical writing: a preparation which, in other spheres of law also, could prove as valuable as college life for the true scholar.

Abstract:
The University of Arkansas has a campus-wide goal of 25 percent of students participating in an international program prior to graduation. This created concern because only three percent of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences (Bumpers College) students participated in an international program prior to 2012. For five years, the Bumpers College International Programs Office (IPO) has assessed students to determine their perceived benefits, barriers, and needs in an effort to design international programs of interest and increase student participation. In this study, Bumpers College students were surveyed to determine perceived benefits and barriers to participating in an international program and identify the countries of interest in visiting. Instruments were administered via paper form to 1,165 students enrolled in large section courses in fall 2016. Using a six-point Likert-type scale, students’ believed international program participation “looks good on a resume” with a mean of 5.46 (SD = 0.77). The least important statement was “increased employability” with a mean of 4.92 (SD = 1.00). Students slightly agreed or agreed to all questionnaire benefit statements. The barrier statement “costs too high” was identified as the most important with a mean of 4.79 (SD = 1.12). The least important statement was “an international program will not have an impact on my future career” with a mean of 2.12 (SD = 1.21). About 72% of students were willing to participate in an international experience in a European country. Recommendations for practice and research are discussed and identified limitations are provided.

The main purpose of this study is to determine the implementation of internalization, the effectiveness of internalization, the impact of internalization and government support in internalizing entrepreneurship values for entrepreneurship learning in Vocational Schools. This research uses a qualitative approach, with data collection tools in the form of interviews, observations and questionnaires. The study population is the eleventh grade students at Vocational School in Medan, North Sumatra. The research sample is eleventh grade students of marketing and office administration that are determined based on purposive random sampling. The results showed that internalization of entrepreneurial values is important to be applied in entrepreneurship learning because: (1) it is able to improve the quality of learning and student involvement in the learning process, (2) improving the competence and skills of students or graduates in developing self-potential and (3) changing students’ attitudes and behavior in the learning process and daily life. Data material only includes 2 vocational schools in medan city, north sumatra province. Further studies are needed in increasing the number of students and larger vocational schools. In addition, expanding the internalization of entrepreneurial values in entrepreneurial learning activities. Qualitative research must consider a greater number of student and school involvement, because this is related to the extent of the validity of the data produced. At the same time, there is an urgent need to internalize entrepreneurial values in learning to provide provisions for students to enter the labor market.

Abstract:
Apartments with green building concept are vertical dwellings that are built using the basic rules of green building namely energy efficiency and renewable energy, efficient use of air, use of environmentally friendly materials, use of waste and materials, improvement of good indoor air circulation, and sustainable development and smart growth. This concept is used as a fulfillment of housing needs for students around Universitas Negeri Medan, which is environmentally friendly. The concept of green building is expected to reduce household pollution generated from student apartments, which can reduce the quality of the surrounding environment and also reduce the costs of maintenance and operation of the apartment, which can have an impact on the quality of resident’s life. In the process of designing this apartment, the writer uses a quantitative-correlative approach to find what is needed by the apartment user. The process of designing an apartment with this concept will produce an environmentally friendly building that can save water use up to 53.28%. This student apartment is equipped with a solar power plant that can save PLN electricity use by up to 33%. Each apartment unit and room in the management office is also designed with natural light and natural air circulation in mind to reduce the use of electricity and air conditioning. This apartment also utilizes human waste by processing it into biogas using dome reactors.

Abstract:
Introduction. The article analizes the peculiarities of the educational process organization in pedagogical universities. The need of modernization the higher education content is pointed out, considering internal and external factors. Building an educational institution and increasing its competitiveness is impossible without understanding the links that are formed between its structural units and higher education students. The purpose of the article is to highlight the peculiarities of the educational process organization in pedagogical universities, creation of a structural and functional model of a higher education institution of pedagogical profile. Results. The main approaches to the educational process organization in pedagogical universities are analyzed. It has been found that the socialization of students has certain specific features, which are explained by studying in higher education institution and orientation to the future profession. It has been revealed that the student-centered approach involves participants’ dialogue in the learning process based on equality and mutual respect, the choice of their own educational trajectory, the use of active learning methods, etc. The application of the competency approach involves students’ getting professional and general competencies that will be needed to solve professional and life issues. It has been found that future teachers in addition to their professional knowledge and skills, must have pedagogical proficiency. The structural components of university that ensure the educational process organization and interaction with students include components of management, structures that provide the educational process directly and subsidiary structures. Separate structural blocks (dean’s office, faculty, correspondence department) have their own structural elements which can be interacted by applicants actively. It is noted that the development of communication skills and social competence are important components of interaction with various structural units. Originality. The structural-functional scheme of the educational process organization of the higher education institution is constructed and the interaction of the structural subdivisions with the higher education applicants is described. Conclusion. According to the authors, the educational process organization should occure with the usage of modern pedagogical technologies and paradigms, and each structural unit should be responsible for the realization of its functional responsibilities. Further research is expected to clarify the list of organizational issues raised during the communication of students with teachers, the dean’s office and student government

Most of the published actuarial literature in the U.K. on immunization has been applied to the valuation of a life office. The authors have shown how the immunization techniques first introduced by Redington (3) in 1952 can be used to match the liability outgo of the office, to a greater or lesser extent. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the student to the underlying concept of immunization and to show how it can be utilized to produce a guaranteed rate of return with a high degree of probability, irrespective of the future course of interest rate levels. The term to maturity and duration (mean term) of a bond are discussed in §2. The maturity is only of limited help in characterizing a specific bond. The duration—a measure of the average time until the bond payments are received—is an easily determined figure which is more informative about a bond than maturity. The price sensitivity of a bond (i.e. volatility) is linearly related to the duration.

Abstract:
<p>This paper originated as a session at the Society of Legal Scholars conference in Leicester in September 2002. The writers4 have been teaching in Northumbria University’s Student Law Office for a number of years. We knew the practical benefits of clinical legal education but two particular problems presented themselves. The first was articulating the rationale for doing it beyond the fact that it exposes students to real practice. Given the fact that the UK already has a training contract regime whereby trainee solicitors spend the first two years of their professional life being supervised and supported by qualified professionals, what is the purpose of clinical legal education? The second problem we had arose when we looked at our Year 3 training programme5 and then student attitudes and ability when they reached the Year 4 programme.</p><p>We found that many of our new Year 4 students did not engage in our firm meetings to discuss other students’ cases very well. That once the client had been interviewed many of them simply approached their supervisor for the next step. That they effectively expected the supervisor to tell them where to look for the law, or just tell them the law. In short that they had some way to go in becoming effective problem solvers.</p><p>It was these difficulties that drew us to the theory of Problem Based Learning (PBL) and its methodology. This paper explores this element of what we are trying to achieve through the clinic experience, the basic theory of PBL6, a description of the problems that we have encountered with our programme, the implementation of PBL in our Year 3 programme and some research conducted into the student experience in our new Year 3 programme.</p>

Abstract:
Background The COVID-19 pandemic lead to a sudden shift to online teaching and restricted campus access. Aim To assess how university students experienced the sudden shift to online teaching after closure of campus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Material and methods Students in Public Health Nutrition answered questionnaires two and 12 weeks (N = 79: response rate 20.3% and 26.6%, respectively) after the lockdown in Norway on 12 March 2020 and participated in digital focus group interviews in May 2020 (mixed methods study). Findings and discussion Two weeks into the lockdown, 75% of students reported that their life had become more difficult and 50% felt that learning outcomes would be harder to achieve due to the sudden shift to online education. Twelve weeks into the lockdown, the corresponding numbers were 57% and 71%, respectively. The most pressing concerns among students were a lack of social interaction, housing situations that were unfit for home office purposes, including insufficient data bandwidth, and an overall sense of reduced motivation and effort. The students collaborated well in digital groups but wanted smaller groups with students they knew rather than being randomly assigned to groups. Most students agreed that pre-recorded and streamed lectures, frequent virtual meetings and student response systems could improve learning outcomes in future digital courses. The preference for written home exams over online versions of previous on-campus exams was likely influenced by student’s familiarity with the former. The dropout rate remained unchanged compared to previous years. Conclusion The sudden shift to digital teaching was challenging for students, but it appears that they adapted quickly to the new situation. Although the concerns described by students in this study may only be representative for the period right after campus lockdown, the study provide the student perspective on a unique period of time in higher education.

Abstract:
Purpose – Managers in higher education require cost effective ways to attract the optimal number of students. The purpose of this paper is to address that general problem at the college level, and in doing so, it points toward strategies that could also be relevant at university and at national level. Two crucial issues are whether potential students are more influenced by parents or by peers when it comes to choosing a college; and whether spending money on advertising is more efficacious than spending money on making direct contact with potential students. The findings provide essential market intelligence for strategically managing the scarce resources available for attracting students. Design/methodology/approach – Data were gathered through a survey instrument and the partial least squares (PLS) technique was subsequently applied to 314 responses. Findings – Secondary school guidance counselors, followed by current and previous college students were the highlights in order of magnitude for non-marketing information sources for college choice. Social life received the highest loadings among college attributes and phone calls from the admissions office received the highest loading among marketer controlled variables. The results reflect the nature of Chinese culture, which is regarded as being highly collectivist. Research limitations/implications – The model proposed in this study is applicable to students of sub-degree courses, but may need to be adapted to degree and postgraduate courses students. Practical implications – This study helps educational managers to identify which factors most strongly influence choice of higher education provider, and as a consequence enable managers to make more strategic use of scarce resources. Originality/value – This is one of very few studies which employ PLS analysis to discover the key factors that influence student selection of a higher education provider, and one of few studies that focusses on Hong Kong.

John Davidson was widely recognized as the founding father of fluidization in chemical engineering. He was a great thinker and had a tremendous ability to distill complicated problems into much simpler concepts. Much of his thinking was set out, along with that of his coauthor David Harrison, in their book Fluidised Particles, first published in 1963, a book that is still used today. John was still coming into his office in Cambridge until the very last weeks of his life, where he continued to work with final-year undergraduates and graduate students. Fluidization, and two-phase flows, continued to fascinate him, and that enthusiasm was transmitted to those around him. The following article was the last work that he wrote and was very much a reflection on his life and career. John passed away on Christmas Day 2019, with the article in its final stages of preparation.

Student veterans face many challenges when transitioning to college. This two-phase study first examined their retention and persistence through the use of archival data at one Midwestern public university. Results indicated a 50% graduation rate, comparable to the national average and above that for nonveterans at the same university. The second, phenomenological study entailed interviewing degree-seeking student veterans about personal, administrative, or academic issues related to college success. Emerging themes included (a) transitioning to civilian life; (b) managing multiple identities; (c) attitudes about civilian peers, faculty, and staff; and (d) medical or psychiatric issues that may interfere with retention or persistence. Interviewees recommended the university might help student veterans succeed by offering a faculty and student orientation on military culture, increasing interdepartmental communication within student affairs’ various offices, and expanding services provided by the campus veteran’s resource center.

HDI became a trend because all local governments are competing to increase the value of their regional HDI. This study aims to identify the factors that influence the HDI of districts/cities in East Java Province in 2017 using the logit model ordinal regression approach. This type of research is a non reactive study using secondary data from the Central Statistics Agency and the East Java Province Health Office in 2017. The study population is all districts/cities of East Java Province. The total research analysis unit was 38 districts/cities. The dependent variable of the study is low, medium, high and very high HDI. The independent variable of the study is the percentage of households behaving clean and healthy, student-teacher ratio (high school level) and open unemployment rate. The results of the analysis using the logit model ordinal regression test (α = 5%) prove there is an influence between the open unemployment rate variable (p = 0.006; β = 0.790) on the HDI. The variable percentage of households behaving clean and healthy and student-teacher ratio (high school level) has no effect on HDI. Both central and regional governments are expected to be able to improve human development in all sectors, especially health, education and the economy.

The fruits of the digital age have become a key part of everyday life in hundreds of millions of households, offices and schools around the world. Our communication takes place far more via text messages and e-mail than face-to-face, and the first place we look for information is Google. The consequences of this technological ubiquity and electronic flood are significant shifts in the attitudes as well as in the behavior of students and teachers, and the goal of this paper is to examine these shifts. How is the digital age changing the opportunities, values and lives of students and teachers - what is happening now, what awaits us in the future? Can digital achievement really change the way students and teachers think or behave? Do both students and teachers learn a new alphabet - the digital alphabet?

Full text
Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: This study explored the connection between Tinto’s notion of “rites of passage” and Kenny’s parental attachment. Specifically, this study sought to explain how students’ parental attachment (i.e., affective quality of parental relationships, parents’ ability to facilitate independence, and parents as source of support) influenced their rites of passage (i.e., separation, transition, incorporation) and how this may differ based on different demographic data. By understanding students’ connections to their parents, student affairs/life administrators will be better able to offer programming that helps students move through the rites of passage in order for the students to become more academically and socially integrated within the institution and ultimately persist. Background: There is little doubt that academic and social integration play a major role in college student persistence. Yet, there remains considerable interest in how students reach this integration. One factor that continues to be explored is parental influence. However, little is known about students’ connections to their parents and how this connection influences their ability to move through Tinto’s “rites of passage.” Methodology: This study employed survey design. For this study, 129 students were surveyed at two institutions in the South. Contribution: By further exploring these relationships, this study will add to the growing body of research on persistence, parental attachment, and historically underrepresented groups in higher education. Findings: Findings from this study suggest that programming provided through student affairs/life offices should focus on the facilitation of independence, so students become more comfortable relying on themselves, new friends, and the institution to assist them as they overcome the new challenges that come with attending college. In doing so, the students can become more integrated into the university and ultimately persist. Recommendations for Practitioners: These findings could be instrumental in shaping the freshmen experience of traditional age enrollees specifically through the admissions process, New Student Orientation programming, and Freshmen Seminar courses. Findings suggest that students may benefit from facilitating their own admission process; therefore, institutions should encourage this independence by sending literature to students, requiring students to take action or respond to requests, and facilitating student campus visits prior to orientation. During New Student Orientation, institutions could offer breakout sessions to parents and students to help with the separation, transition, and incorporation processes. Break-out sessions for parents will focus on what these different stages look like and what they can do to assist their students overcome them. Additionally, break-out sessions for students will focus on helping them identify stages, develop strategies for moving through them, and maintaining good relationships with their parents in the process. Finally, the Freshmen Seminar course should reinforce lessons taught at New Student Orientation regarding separation, transition, and incorporation by providing lessons that allow students to explore the different stages via case studies, identify strategies that one can employ to address issues that arise at the various stages, evaluate services of offices created to assist with stages, and other lessons. Recommendation for Researchers: Although this study has limitations the findings are useful in identifying future research opportunities. A study is required with a larger sample, with a diverse population to allow for rigorous testing of all variables. I suggest a larger and more diverse sample at varying institutional types to fully capture differences among the different groups. Although there were a number of significant correlational findings, the relationships were weak. This suggests that these variables need to be further explored to determine the strength of parental attachment and separation, transition, and incorporation. Impact on Society: This study is important to society because it not only addresses where the issues occur as students move the rites of passage (i.e., separation, transition, incorporation) but also identifies strategies that institutions can employ to assist students as they move through those rites. By understanding how connected students are to their parents, institutions can better prepare their students to work more independently to achieve their educational goals. In doing so, the students will be better able to join the work force and contribute to society in a meaningful way. Future Research: Future research should further study parental attachment and persistence at varying institutional types and link student success services to addressing some of the issues related to separation, transition, and incorporation of these students.

Abstract:
Introduction: in historical science, along with others, the concept of ‘everyday life’ is actively developed. Recently it found application in foreign and Russian historiography of the history of childhood and youth, including in relation to the period of the World War II and the Great Patriotic War. Objective: characteristics of the everyday life of directorship, teachers and students of the Khanty-Mansiysk National Pedagogical College as a system of socio-cultural relations. Research materials: documentation of the Khanty-Mansiysk Pedagogical College and higher institutions of public education, as well as students’ memories. Results and novelty of the research: for the population of the country, the North, Khanty-Mansiysk Okrug, the war has become an insurmountable, exhausting, destructive and at the same time, inspiring and stimulating force. The everyday life of the Khanty-Mansiysk National Pedagogical College was characterized by professional problems of heads and teachers associated with school reforms of 1941–1944s, everyday disorder of evacuated teachers and students, hard physical work, diseases, difficulties of cultural adaptation in the College, especially for Khanty and Mansi students. Scientific novelty of the research is: 1) for the first time the characteristic of military everyday life of the Khanty-Mansiysk National Pedagogical College is given; 2) the theme of everyday life is mainly covered not on ego sources, but on office documentation; 3) everyday life is shown not only as a daily life, but also as relationships that binds together directorship, teachers and students.

The following empirical characteristics of future perceptions were identified and analyzed in each of the studied groups of respondents: “Localization of the Future”, “Prospectivity of the Future”, “Eventfulness of the Future”, “Subjectness of the Future” and “Optimism in the Future”. It is empirically established that the representations about the personal future of Luhansk students are intertwined with the future of the country and less optimistic than those of Russian students. It is shown that the representations of Luhansk military men are characterized by low subjectness, localized in the spheres of the future of the country, health and leisure-time activities; they are compressed, not concretized and unrealistic. The representations of the employees of Prosecutor General's office are characterized by greater prospectivity, eventfulness and subjectness than at the military personnel. The obtained results broaden the field of scientific representations about the factors of personal and life prospects of the subject, and also about specificity of representations of the subject about own future in crucial moments of development of a society.

Abstract:
Every conception of humanity arises from a specific place and from the people of that place. How such places shape and sustain the people of a place is the focus of education that enables each student to understand themselves and makes them feel at home in the world. The notion of Indigenous humanities being developed at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon represents an example of such ecological teachings and practices of what constitutes humanity. Ecology is the animating force that teaches us how to be human in ways that theological, moral and political ideologies are unable to. Ecology privileges no particular people or way of life. It does, however, promote Indigenous humanity as affirmed in Article 1 of the 1966 UNESCO Declaration of the Principles of International Cultural Co-operation: “Each culture has a dignity and value which must be respected and preserved” (Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, 1966). In the Eurocentric versions of humanity, this concept is sometimes referred to as cultural diversity; yet Indigenous peoples prefer the concept of Indigenous humanities.

Abstract:
Based on survey responses from a national random sample of nearly 4,000 high school and college students, we uncover a dramatic gender gap in political ambition. This finding serves as striking evidence that the gap is present well before women and men enter the professions from which most candidates emerge. We then use political socialization—which we gauge through a myriad of socializing agents and early life experiences—as a lens through which to explain the individual-level differences we uncover. Our analysis reveals that parental encouragement, politicized educational and peer experiences, participation in competitive activities, and a sense of self-confidence propel young people's interest in running for office. But on each of these dimensions, women, particularly once they are in college, are at a disadvantage. By identifying when and why gender differences in interest in running for office materialize, we begin to uncover the origins of the gender gap in political ambition. Taken together, our results suggest that concerns about substantive and symbolic representation will likely persist.
