Abstract:

The Office for the Study of Aging (OSA) at the University of South Carolina was established in 1988 in conjunction with the founding of the South Carolina Alzheimer’s Disease Registry. Over the last 25 years, the Office for the Study of Aging has furthered its purpose through the development of research and programs for all of South Carolina’s aging population. Examples include the Placemat Strength Training Program, the Dementia Dialogues education program, and the South Carolina Vulnerable Adult Guardian ad Litem program. The work of the office is sustained through a unique government–university–community partnership that supports innovative work and provides direct lines for dissemination, translation, and implementation of programs. The office’s efforts have resulted in two state laws involving aging and older adults as well as recognition through awards and publications. The Office provides a partnership model that offers a dissemination and translation pipeline for programs to be developed, piloted, revised, and enacted into policy.

Abstract:

Objective. To assess the occurrence of various vascular aging phenotypes among young people, depending on the level of blood pressure (BP) and in relation to risk factors (RF) and the presence of connective tissue dysplasia (CTD).Design and methods. In total, 250 young people (88 boys and 162 girls) aged from 18 to 25 years old were examined at the University Health Center. All the subjects were divided into tercile groups based on cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI), determined by the VaSera-1500 (Fucuda Denshia, Japan). According to the latest expert recommendations the third tercile group corresponds to early vascular aging or EVA syndrome. The first tercile group corresponds to favorable vascular aging. We have analyzed the representation of various vascular phenotypes in individuals with elevated and normal BP, as well as the main RF and external signs of CTD in each of CAVI-tercile group. Data processing was performed using the software package “Statistica 10.0” (StatSoft Inc., USA).Results. Among young people with office hypertension and high normal BP, the EVA phenotype and phenotypes of normal and favorable vascular aging are equally distributed. In persons with office normal and elevated BP, vascular stiffness correlates with weight, body mass index and waist circumference (with the increase in arterial rigidity these indicators decrease). CTD is registered among subjects with severe vascular remodeling both in boys and girls.Conclusions. Our data indicate the feasibility of angiology screening for identification of vascular aging phenotypes as a part of preventive measures among young people, regardless of the level of initial office BP. This strategy strategy will contribute to a more differentiated identification of risk groups and more individualized preventive interventions based on vascular aging phenotypes.

Abstract:

The Arrhenius method was used to investigate the effect of accelerated aging conditions on the physical and mechanical properties of polymer films for technical, medical, food and office applications. Temperature and UV radiation were taken into account as environmental factors. It was shown that the tested films are more sensitive to thermal degradation than UV radiation. The reduction in tensile strength after thermal aging does not exceed 40%, and in the case of UV radiation, 14%. The estimated lifetime of the tested films is over 5 years.

Abstract:

South Korea has industrialized and urbanized rapidly since the 1970s, and subsequently, the historic downtown areas of major cities have been hollowed out as the population and industry have become concentrated in urban centers. Based on the Urban Decline Indicators of Korea, in accordance with the Urban Revitalization Act of the South Korean government, a comparative analysis of the population changes, office vacancy rate, building aging rate, decrease in the number of industries and employees, and housing supply and demand in historic downtown areas and new urban areas of six major South Korean cities demonstrated that all six historic downtown areas have declined significantly. Currently, little research is available in South Korea on the expansion of urban living and the inflow of urban residents through office-to-residential building conversion. Therefore, this study explores the expansion of urban residences to revitalize these historic downtown areas. To this end, this study examines the feasibility of converting poorly functioning, vacant offices in historic downtown areas into residential spaces to present a sustainable strategy for their complexation. This study finds that office-to-residential building conversion is a sustainable way to recover urban space and grow the population and industry in historic downtown areas.

Abstract This presentation will discuss how we used CIAW 2017 to promote intergenerational community engagement by collaborating with our office of Continuing Education and AARP Connecticut to host “#DisruptAging – A Conversation Across Professions, Perspectives, and Generations.” Together we developed a half day program designed to build bridges among academic institutions, aging professionals, community collaborators, and consumers who are passionate about aging issues. We brought together a multi-generational audience of professors, students, professionals, and representatives of various community organizations to discuss ways to change the conversation around aging. This gave us an opportunity to highlight our gerontology programs and showcase our gerontology students, while students learned about aging-related careers, public policy initiatives, and organizations in Connecticut that support older adults and their families.

Abstract:

The article describes the results of aging of samples of cold-cured molded polyurethanes of SKU-PFL brand filled with zeolite and silica gel - wastes of petrochemical production. The samples were aged under normal climatic conditions for 5 years. Filling of the samples varied from 10 to 50 %wt. Investigations of physical and mechanical properties of the samples before and after aging were carried out, the basic indicators of material quality were calculated using Microsoft Office Excel package. As a result of researches it was established that after aging the basic physical and mechanical properties of cast polyurethanes of SKU-PFL brand of cold curing filled with zeolite and silica gel change insignificantly, however the best resistance to aging are in samples with 20 %wt. zeolite and 10 %wt. silica gel filling both before and after aging that allowed to recommend them for long-term use of articles.

Abstract I had the privilege of serving as Principal- and Co-Convener of the HIV, AIDS and Older Adults Special Interest Group (SIG) for four years (2012 through 2015). During this era, when the proportion of U.S. older adults with HIV was projected to surpass 50%, we witnessed a number of milestones including the NIH Office of AIDS Working Group on HIV and Aging recommendations for critical research focus publication (JAIDS, 2012), the first CDC Surveillance Report on people 50 and older with HIV (2013), and the first UNAIDS report on HIV and aging (2013). During this period, the SIG was very successful in raising awareness about HIV and aging through numerous GSA presentations. Topics covered ranged from sexual health, to cognitive function, psychological well-being, social isolation, successful aging, and resilience. These presentations highlighted research findings that have been critical in developing interventions and shaping policy initiatives to support this growing population. Part of a symposium sponsored by the HIV, AIDS and Older Adults Interest Group.

Modern treatments for the aging neck have continued to evolve over the past decade, with more options continuing to become available. In this article, we describe our noninvasive approach to the aging neck through the combination of submental liposuction, radiofrequency (RF) microneedling, and percutaneous RF as a safe and effective option. Through appropriate patient selection, preoperative counseling, and good surgical technique, appropriate results can be achieved with minimal downtime. Patient selection, counseling, appropriate anesthesia, procedure details, and results are discussed in this article.

Abstract:

Aging workforce is a new challenge for modern society nowdays. A number of studies have analysed the effects of sleep deprivation on postural control but the effect of sleep deficits, either in quantity or quality and other sleep problem such as excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) especially on aging workers have not been analysed. The purpose of this study was analyse the relation between quality of sleep and EDS with balance level on aging workers. This study is cross sectional analytic with total sampling technique. Fifty three healthy aging workers (?40 years old) participated in the study. This study was analysed using chi-square test and logistic regression The results showed significant relationship between sleep quality and EDS with balance level (p<0,05). The result of logistic regression test showed that the strength of the relationship from the biggest to the smallest is the quality of sleep as factor which equally influence the balance level (p<0,05). The conclusion of this study is significant correlation between quality of sleep and excessive daytime sleepiness with balance level on aging workers at the Cultural Office Bali Provincial Goverment.

Abstract:

Bacterial cellulose, produced during fermentation of Kombucha tea, was investigated relative to its ability to modify the characteristics of pulp from recycled office wastepaper. The produced bacterial cellulose wet films were dispersed and added rates of 5%, 10%, and 15% to the recycled office wastepaper. The Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analyses, scanning electron microscopy images and thermogravimetric analysis values were determined in order to characterize the pulp samples. The results of these analyses showed similar changes as the amount of added bacterial cellulose increased, which also meant an increased amount of filler attaching to the fiber matrix. The burst index and tensile index values were protected while the tear index value partially decreased as the amount of added bacterial cellulose increased. The brightness values of the bacterial cellulose reinforced papers did not change after thermal aging, while the changes in the yellowness values were quite limited. Higher water absorption rates, and lower air permeability values were obtained from bacterial cellulose reinforced recycled office wastepaper sheets, which corresponded to the addition of increased bacterial cellulose amounts. Considering the mechanical and physical properties of the reinforced paper, bacterial cellulose represents a promising alternative for the reinforcement of office wastepaper.

ABSTRACT The demographic trends of decreasing fertility rate and increasing life expectancy result in many older people remaining in the workforce. The biggest challenge for organizations is to establish a productive and safe working environment for their aging workers as their physical and cognitive capabilities decrease. The physical environment can influence workers' productivity, well-being, and safety. First, this study provides a literature review on how older workers' physical and cognitive conditions change. Second, a survey was conducted with older employees in a hotel located in Xi'an, China to understand the older employees' job satisfaction level, current diseases, possible reasons for their diseases or low productivity at work, and their preference on the future workspace. Lastly, this paper suggests several workplace strategies including ergonomic design in the workspace, flexible office layout, and improvement of indoor air quality to support the aging workforce with their working environment. Besides, the method can be used by other similar organizations to understand their aging employees' concerns and needs and to inform how to design the workplace for the aging employees.

Abstract. Aim: To investigate birth cohort differences in associations between cardiovascular risk and fluid cognition between the age of 70 and 79. Method: Data were drawn from representative population-based cohort samples (H70), born 1901–1902, 1906–1907, and 1930, measured at ages 70, 75, and 79 on fluid cognitive measures (spatial ability and logical reasoning). The Framingham Risk Score (FRS), derived from office-based nonlaboratory predictors (age, sex, systolic blood pressure, BMI, smoking, diabetes status), was used to measure cardiovascular risk. Multiple-group latent growth curve models were fitted to the data. Findings: Estimates revealed small associations between the FRS and fluid cognition. These associations were slightly reduced in the 1930 cohort. Conclusion: Findings suggest diminishing adverse effects of cardiovascular risk on cognitive aging in cohorts born later.

Abstract:

Introduction. The rapid aging of the world and Russian population and the associated medical, demographic, and socioeconomic problems determine the increased interest in the issue of aging. Aim and objectives. to study the features and causes of changes in age-related mortality, life expectancy (LE), and aging in Russia in the second half of the XX century compared to other countries. Material and methods. We used the Human Mortality Database survival tables to estimate the expected and maximum life expectancy. The aging rate was calculated using the Gompertz-Makeham formula and the increment of total mortality. Graphs were built using Microsoft Office Excel’s standard tools and the computer program Aging of Populations developed by us. Results. Until the middle of the XX century, significant aging rate changes did not accompany a sharp increase in Le. Later with a relatively small increase in LE, it decreases sharply. Deceleration of aging was observed for all studied countries (from 12 to 36 for different available historical periods) for all studied parameters and progresses to the end of the studied period. For Russia, the decline in the aging rate that began simultaneously 7 with other countries in 1960-1970's slows down and is restored only by 2000. Discussion. Improvements in living conditions and health outcomes lead to an increase in the proportion of the elderly population structure. However, these same processes reduce the rate of individual aging. Improving medical and social care for retired people reduces their mortality rate. Still, it produces a phenomenon of delayed mortality in later ages (the phenomenon of inversion of centenarians’ total mortality - from reduced to increased). Nevertheless, the use of the mortality rate increment indicator shows that the decline in the aging rate for centenarians persists. Conclusion. The identified trends in mortality are useful for developing areas of preventive and socio-medical impact on the population’s health.

Abstract:

System dynamics is a method enabling simulation and subsequent analysis of various socio-economic problems. Even though it was founded about fifty years ago, it is relatively new and little used in the Czech Republic. It has a good practice to make use of molecules, standard partial modelling structures which make the modelling processes easier and more effective. The objective of this article is to introduce and provide such molecule of an aging chain for the Czech Republic population. To increase its usefulness the aging chain is disaggregated and divided into two chains, one for each sex. The aging chain molecule consists of stock and flow diagram, a system of differential equations and parameters quantified on the basis of demographic data for Czech Republic. Proposed model of aging chain also capture a special phenomenon of the Czech population – the postponing of motherhood and thus the increase in average age of mothers. This fact led to special model structure that is uncommon for existing aging chains of different populations.The model is constructed on the basis of official demographic data of the Czech Statistical Office and the results of the simulation are compared with the surveyed data. The intersection of data sources resulted into disaggregation of population into twelve age cohorts. The chain is created to serve as a molecule for more complex models. Therefore, variables functioning as interface for implementation into such models are indicated in the text.

Abstract:

SUMMARY Bleaching can cause perceptible color changes on resin-based composite (RBC) restorations that may not be stable with aging. The objective of this study was to evaluate color stability and whiteness variations of RBCs after bleaching and aging procedures. Discs (10 mm in diameter and 1 mm thick) of shades A2 and A3 were fabricated from two RBCs (Filtek Z250 and Filtek Z350 XT) and divided into three subgroups (for each composite and shade) (n=5) as follows: control (no bleaching), at-home bleaching, and in-office bleaching. All specimens underwent an accelerated artificial aging up to 450 KJ/m2 and 900 KJ/m2 in an aging chamber (Suntest XXL+). A spectroradiometer (SpectraScan PR-670) was used to obtain CIE L*a*b* coordinates. CIEDE2000 color difference (ΔE00) and whiteness index for dentistry (WID) were used to evaluate color stability. Color and whiteness differences data were analyzed considering the 50:50% visual color difference thresholds (perceptibility [PT] and acceptability [AT]) and 50:50% whiteness thresholds (whiteness perceptibility [WPT] and whiteness acceptability [WAT]). Analysis of variance and Tukey tests (α=0.05) were used to statistically analyze the data. After bleaching, all specimens showed ΔE00 and ΔWID values below their corresponding acceptability thresholds (AT and WAT, respectively). After aging, L* and WID values decreased while b* values increased (p≤0.05), resulting in ΔE00 and ΔWID values above AT and WAT, respectively. Color changes after bleaching RBCs were clinically acceptable, while aging provoked clinically perceptible color changes.

Abstract The UMass Lowell Center for Gerontology Research and Partnerships (CGRP) has been on the Age-Friendly University (AFU) trajectory since April 2018. In April 2019, at the CGRP-sponsored 5th Annual Healthy Aging Living Well Forum, qualitative analysis of table-top discussions identified themes related to the AFU Principles: Accessibility, care, communication community education, flexibility, finances/money, recreation, inclusive society, technology and transportation. In September 2019, in collaboration with the UMass President’s Office and UMass Boston’s Gerontology Institute, we launched the AFU Climate Survey to faculty, staff, and students on the UML campus. This was followed by the AFU Inventory assessments of 12 key campus leaders and offices. Three CGRP members solicited input via email, follow-up telephone communication and information from the University website. The results presented will focus on how other educational institutions might consider proceeding with this process and how to adapt the Inventory to meet other unique campus characteristics.

Abstract:

High blood pressure accelerates normal aging stiffness process. Arterial stiffness (AS) has been previously associated with impaired cognitive function and dementia. Our aims are to study how cognitive function and status (mild cognitive impairment, MCI and normal cognitive aging, NCA) relate to AS in a community-based population of hypertensive participants assessed with office and 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure measurements. Six hundred ninety-nine participants were studied, 71 had MCI and the rest had NCA. Office pulse pressure (PP), carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity, and 24-hour ambulatory PP monitoring were collected. Also, participants underwent a brain magnetic resonance to study cerebral small–vessel disease (cSVD) lesions. Multivariate analysis–related cognitive function and cognitive status to AS measurements after adjusting for demographic, vascular risk factors, and cSVD. Carotid–femoral pulse wave velocity and PP at different periods were inversely correlated with several cognitive domains, but only awake PP measurements were associated with attention after correcting for confounders (beta = −0.22, 95% confidence interval (CI) −0.41, −0.03). All ambulatory PP measurements were related to MCI, which was independently associated with nocturnal PP (odds ratio (OR) = 2.552, 95% CI 1.137, 5.728) and also related to the presence of deep white matter hyperintensities (OR = 1.903, 1.096, 3.306). Therefore, higher day and night ambulatory PP measurements are associated with poor cognitive outcomes.

Karen L. Fingerman is an assistant professor of Human Development and Family Studies at Pennsylvania State University. Her research examines positive and negative emotions in lifelong relationships, including mother-daughter ties, grandparent-grandchild relationships, and friendships. She recently received the Springer Award for Early Career Achievement in Research on Adult Development and Aging from Division 20 of the American Psychological Association. She teaches courses in life span development, adult development, and social gerontology. Susan Krauss Whitbourne is a professor of Psychology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst; Coordinator of the Office of National Scholarship Advisement in Commonwealth College; the faculty adviser to the Psi Chi Chapter; and Coordinator of the Honors Program in Psychology. She conducts research on identity in adulthood and old age and its relation to physical functioning. A former president of Division 20 of the American Psychological Association, she is currently serving as Division 20 Council Representative. She has written 10 books and nearly 100 articles and chapters on the topic of aging and adult development and is active in teaching introductory psychology as well as courses on aging.

This paper presents the perspective of the Structural Mechanics program of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research on the damage assessment of structures. It is found that damage assessment of structures plays a very important role in assuring the safety and operational readiness of Air Force fleet. The current fleet has many aging aircraft, which poses a considerable challenge for the operators and maintainers. The nondestructive evaluation technology is rather mature and able to detect damage with considerable reliability during the periodic maintenance inspections. The emerging structural health monitoring methodology has great potential, because it will use on-board damage detection sensors and systems, will be able to offer on-demand structural health bulletins. Considerable fundamental and applied research is still needed to enable the development, implementation, and dissemination of structural health monitoring technology.

AbstractThe demand for noninvasive facial rejuvenation continues to increase as younger, well-informed patients enter the aesthetic market. We refer to a subset of these patients as “tweeners,” those who present with early signs of neck and facial aging, but who have not yet developed changes significant enough to warrant a traditional excisional surgery approach. Many of these patients are in search of a minimally invasive intervention, a bridge in between observation and surgery. The authors describe their experience with radiofrequency (RF) technology as an in-office tool to address the aging face in a select patient population. This review also attempts to comprehensively search the existing body of literature to describe the RF technologies and devices available for facial rejuvenation. The efficacy and safety profiles of the devices are discussed, and the devices are categorized by their method of RF delivery—over (contact), through (microneedle), and under (percutaneous) the skin.

Abstract The HIV and Aging Interest Group at GSA begin30 years ago. At that time, Highly Active Antiretroviral Treatments (HAART) did not exist. The Ryan White CARE act was newly enacted and older adults living with HIV/AIDS were primarily infected in later life. HIV was considered a life threatening disease. This Interest Group‘s existence has paralleled the epidemic including its challenges, innovations and rewards. The number of sessions focusing on HIV and aging has grown at GSA, with shifting emphasis toward longevity, quality of life and comorbidity. This symposium, celebrating the theme of “Turning75: Why age Matters” calls upon past and current IG conveners, including the founding convener, to review the history of the HIV and Aging interest group. Tepper discusses the group’s origins and the historical context of HIV as an emerging issue for older people. Emlet will discuss the changes in HIV care and treatment during the early2000s and how these advances were reflected in the interest group and GSA sessions. Brennan-Ing reviews significant changes between2012 through2015, when the proportion of older adults with HIV was projected to surpass50%, and the NIH Office of AIDS Working Group on HIV and Aging published its first set of recommendations. Finally, Taylor and colleagues brings us to the IG’s current activities including the importance of HIV Cohort studies and national policy highlights such as the National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day. Abstract There is a workforce shortage in age-related fields, in both medical and non-medical, and professional and nonprofessional employment levels. Jobs in aging-related fields are cited as growth careers, or in lists of “top ten growing jobs”, yet academic training programs in gerontology are still facing low enrollment and other long-standing barriers. Utah State University offers an interdisciplinary gerontology certificate housed within the department of Human Development and Family Studies (HDFS). Recruitment to the certificate is most effective from two “feeder” classes: Adult Development and Aging (in HDFS), and via a guest lecture in Community Health (in Kinesiology and Health Sciences). Face-to-face meetings with academic advisors in other departments (e.g. Nutrition) has resulted in referrals to the certificate program. Office hours and drop-ins from interested students falls on the certificate coordinator, but is essential in recruitment. In sum, face-to-face recruitment is time intensive, but significantly more effective than online/print material.

I got started in the mid-1980s when I served on an Office of Technology Assessment panel to assess the likely impact on elderly health care costs of emergent, increasingly expensive medical technologies. They would, the panel concluded, raise some serious problems for the future of Medicare. The panel did not take up what might be done about those costs, but I decided to think about that question and wrote a book called, Setting Limits: Medical Goals in an Aging Society.

The objective of the case study was to give an overview of differences between Hungarian regions from the aspect of socioeconomic factors. The paper deals with the distinct situations of NUTS 2 regions in order to get a general view of the country from that angle. Although, that approach is not the most detailed one, it makes possible to easily distinguish the competitive parts of the country. Secondary data were provided by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) and National Territorial Development and Spatial Planning Information System (TeIR) were used to present the distribution of population by various expositions. Unemployment rate, distribution of educational attainment, population growth, rate of ageing, vitality index, dependency ratio and GDP per capita were calculated and assembled to present the differences. The results are showing clearly, that Central Hungary (HU10), Central Transdanubia (HU21), Western Transdanubia (HU22) are currently competitive. The population of Southern Transdanubia (HU23) and Southern Great Plain (HU33) are aging, but stable from the view of economy related indexes. Northern Hungary (HU31) and Northern Great Plain (HU32) are considered laggards from that aspect, but have a considerable potential because of the age structure of the population. The paper also introduces some national and EU programmes which are meant to mitigate the effects of unfavourable situations.

The aim of this study is to present the employment rate of immigrants from outside the European Union (EU) in Łódzkie Voivodship within 2010–2017. Simultaneously, some problems with measurement of economic migration on the regional labour market were emphasized. The main source of data are statistics on the number of work permits granted and registered declarations of intention of employing foreigners available at the website of the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy as well as information from the Voivodship Office in Łódź. Descriptive and comparative research methods were applied. In the case of Łódzkie Voivodship, the long-term nature of immigrant employment is evi-dent, which, given the current demographic situation in the region (population aging and depopulation) can testify the ”setting up” of immigrants from outside the EU.

A cross-sectional study was conducted to investigate older patients' utilisation of emergency department resources.Patients aged >65 years, compared with adults <65 years, were more likely to be triaged to higher clinical urgency categories. They have a higher hospital admission rate and longer length-of-stay even after adjusting for triage category.Patients >80 years, compared with 65-79 years, were more likely to be triaged to higher urgency categories. These groups had similar hospital admission rates and lengths-of-stay. Patients �65 years presented in similar numbers during office-hours and after-hours, but after-hours attendances were more likely to be triaged to higher urgency categories. The greater emergency department resource utilisation by older people has implications for the provision of health services in an aging population.

Abstract:

Investigation of three colour inks was performed using the HPLC method. The research is based on the theory of reducing of solvent in ink and on the change of ratio between dyes due to the degradation of the dye or changes of its extraction properties. Old samples, aged from 1 to 7 months were selected for research. Samples were made using blue, violet and black ballpoint ink. Record samples are kept in the dark, in climatic conditions of a usual office. During the identification of ink compound, by using LC/MS, a statement was made that each ink sample contains 2-phenoxyethanol as a solvent, Methyl Violet and Basic Blue dyes and their degradation products. The areas of peaks gained at characteristic wavelengths are used for the analysis of the aging process.

The SPARTE study (Strategy for Preventing cardiovascular and renal events based on ARTErial stiffness; URL: https://www.clinicaltrials.gov ; Unique identifier: NCT02617238) is a multicenter open-label randomized controlled trial with blinded end point evaluation, undertaken at 25 French research centers in university hospitals. Patients with primary hypertension were randomly assigned (1:1) to a therapeutic strategy targeting the normalization of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) measured every 6 months (PWV group, n=264) versus a classical therapeutic strategy only implementing the European Guidelines for Hypertension Treatment (conventional group, n=272). In the PWV group, the therapeutic strategy used preferably a combination of ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker and calcium channel blockers, as well as maximal recommended doses of ACE inhibitors and angiotensin receptor blockers. The primary outcome was a combined end point including particularly stroke and coronary events. Secondary outcomes included the time-course changes in brachial office blood pressure (BP), ambulatory BP, PWV, and treatments. After a median follow-up of 48.3 months, there was no significant between-group difference in primary outcome (hazard ratio, 0.74 [95% CI, 0.40–1.38], P =0.35). In the PWV group, combinations of renin-angiotensin-system blockers and calcium channel blockers were prescribed at higher dosage ( P =0.028), office and ambulatory systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure decreased more ( P <0.001 and P <0.01, respectively), and PWV increased less ( P =0.0003) than in the conventional group. The SPARTE study lacked sufficient statistical power to demonstrate its primary outcome. However, it demonstrated that a PWV-driven treatment for hypertension enables to further reduce office and ambulatory systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure and prevent vascular aging in patients with hypertension at medium-to-very-high risk, compared with strict application of guidelines.

Introduction. Physical activity is known to be an important factor influencing health throughout human life. This issue has become crucial for public health due to the aging of the population in both developed and developing countries. Aim. is to present a literature review on the forms of physical activity undertaken by the elderly, as well as on issues related to physical activity and the population aging. Material and methods. The study was prepared on the basis of a review of Polish and foreign literature. The following databases and data sources were used: EBSCO, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar. An additional source of data were the websites of the Central Statistical Office. Strictly defined key phrases were used during the collection of literature. The work has been divided into thematic subsections on the aging of the society, the impact of physical activity on health and the main topic, i.e. forms of physical activity selected by the elderly. Analysis of the literature. The number of elderly people in Polish society has increased by almost 3.7 million over three decades. Therefore, an important topic is prophylaxis aimed at increasing the number of days in good health, largely covering the broadly understood activation of the elderly. The available data indicate that only 12% of elderly people undertake physical activity once a week. The most common form of spending free time actively is walking (as many as 73% of people in this population declare this form of physical activity in one of the presented studies). Conclusion. Organized forms of physical activity are undertaken much less frequently by the analyzed age group mainly due to financial limitations and limited availability of sports infrastructure.

In an aging society, many kinds of welfare apparatus have been developed with highly sophisticated technology in order to support seniors and their helpers physically. But mental care is also very important because Japanese seniors living alone are rather reluctant to participate in their local community. We have designed an information system using robotic pets terminal controlled by PC which can communicate with the seniors. It includes speech recognition, multi-modal dialogue control and telecommunication software. In this system, one can deliver daily information through the pets from a distant place such as local government office or welfare institution. At the same time, one can also watch safety of their lives without intruding their privacy. Now, we carried out an field experiment in Ikeda City, Osaka. And we evaluated our system at a welfare institution and confirmed its effectiveness.

Our aging population has exacerbated strong and divergent trends between health human resource supply and demand. One way to mitigate future inequities is through the adoption of health information technology (HIT). Our previous research showed a number of risks and mitigating factors which affected HIT implementation success. We confirmed these findings through semistructured interviews with nine Alberta clinics. Sociotechnical factors significantly affected physicians' implementation success. Physicians reported that the time constraints limited their willingness to investigate, procure, and implement an EMR. The combination of antiquated exam room design, complex HIT user interfaces, insufficient physician computer skills, and the urgency in patient encounters precipitated by a fee-for-service remuneration model and long waitlists compromised the quantity, if not the quality, of the information exchange. Alternative remuneration and access to services plans might be considered to drive prudent behavior during physician office system implementation.

In a cohort of males with LUTS, VV reported in 3-day VD was compared to VV recorded at UF. Demographic data were analyzed. The patients were stratified according to VV. A sub-analysis dividing males by age strata was also performed. Results: We enrolled 169 patients. Mean VV were higher at UF than at VD in the entire population and in each group, stratified by age. VV significantly decreased with aging. Males with the lowest threshold difference (50 mL) were 29%, with a moderate threshold difference (<100 mL) 55.6%, with an intermediate threshold difference 49.1% (51–150 mL), whereas 21.9% of men had a large threshold difference (>150 mL). Discussion/Conclusion: VV correlation between VD and UF was poor. A large part of men performed UF with VV which were poorly comparable to the habitual VV assessed by 3-day VD. Therefore, our results indicate the relevance to obtain more than 1 UF in these patients.

Abstract:

The city of San Francisco in California has 826,000 residents and is growing slowly compared to other large cities in the western United States, facing concerns such as an aging population and flight of families to nearby suburbs. This case study investigates the social and demographic factors that are causing this phenomenon based on data that were collected by San Francisco's city controller's office in its annual survey to residents. By using data analytics, we can predict which residents are likely to move away, and this help us infer which factors of city life and city services contribute to a resident's decision to leave the city. Results of this research indicate that factors like public transportation services, public schools, and personal finances are significant in this regard, which can potentially help the city of San Francisco to prioritize its resources in order to better retain its locals.

The Problem. Women continue to be underrepresented in the leadership of higher education, a particularly pressing problem given the aging of college presidents and growing numbers of women students. The Solution. The American Council on Education and its Office of Women in Higher Education (OWHE) provide leadership training and support to thousands of women interested in leadership in higher education through a state-based, volunteer network; women of color summits and training; and national and regional leadership forums. The primary purpose of this article is to highlight the structure of these OWHE-supported leadership development programs and networks. The Stakeholders. These leadership development programs provide solutions for higher education institutions seeking to provide leadership training for their women leaders. The programs, structures, and strategies highlighted offer a model for consideration by HRD and leadership development professionals charged with diversifying leadership in other professions, business, and industry.

Abstract:

The aging is a natural process that cannot be avoided with age. Even though it is a natural thing, the process of aging still causes problems both physically, biologically, mentally and socio-economically due to a decline which is called a degenerative process The process of degeneration that occurs in the elderly, causes time. World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that there were 600 million elderly people in 2012 worldwide. WHO also noted that there are 142 million elderly people in the Southeast Asia region. Meanwhile, according to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), it was noted that the number of elderly people in Indonesia reached 28 million in 2012 from only 19 million in 2006. The results of the data recapitulation of the Central Java health office recorded 3 million elderly people in Central Java. The method in this study was experimental research and quasi-experimental design type with quasi-experimental design and village control group. Sample determination using the Total Sampling technique with a sample size of 30 respondents. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon test. The results obtained before being given an intervention that has a level of good sleep quality amounted to 43.3% and after given an intervention that has a level of quality of sleep that is good, the minimum is 76.7%. Statistically obtained a p-value of 0,000 (<0.05) can be interpreted that there is a significant influence on brain gymnastics on the quality of sleep in the elderly.
