Full textENGLISH ABSTRACT: Why are other industries successfully using coworking spaces while the advertising industry in South Africa does not, or only partially? Can coworking spaces specifically tailored for the advertising industry invigorate the industry or will client confidentiality be the death of coworking in this industry? The purpose of this research study was to determine the viability of coworking spaces in the advertising industry in South Africa, as well as the barriers to entry and the concerns that the typical advertising person would have related to coworking spaces. This research employed a qualitative approach by means of four structured open-ended face-to-face interviews to obtain primary data about coworking spaces in Cape Town. The participants were randomly selected from advertising staff who had left the corporate environment to work for themselves from a home office, some who were using shared office space or entrepreneurs availing themselves of the advertising space. The researcher asked respondents questions about their experiences and what would be important considerations for making use of a coworking space. The key findings were that there was a need for affordable office space. Financial considerations were one of the main reasons preventing start-up entrepreneurs or self-employed individuals from moving from their home office. The location of the coworking space was of the utmost importance, because individuals did not wish to be stuck in traffic and preferred to work close to their homes. Confidentiality was a major concern for all the respondents taking part in the survey. The principle of knowledge sharing in a coworking environment is valuable, but it could have limitations in the advertising industry since most of the work is deemed confidential. Moreover, the concept of coworking was still largely unknown and had to be explained during each interview. The way we work has changed, but not the working environment.

Full textThe present work aims to verify the perception of employees about the influence of work environment on productivity and quality of work in a public sector office. In the current economic context, investment in the work environment as a tool for optimizing organizational performance is no longer a competitive differential, but a necessity. However, even with the increasing development of private sector research in the theme, the public sector still lives under premises that minimize the importance of spatial conditions in the management results, leading to few studies. Against this background, the current research develops in this gap. The research method is classified as a qualitative approach of applied nature for descriptive purposes. The technical procedure was based on the Post-Occupancy Assessment method using a pre-structured checklist, exploratory walkthrough, interviews with key characters, and a questionnaire with the users of the environment for data collection. The data were analyzed with the application of descriptive statistics and content analysis. Data analysis allowed to conclude that users of the case study work environment believe that the environment positively influences productivity. It was also possible to raise success factors and failures of the work environment. The main success factors were flows, distances, workstations, social living spaces and illumination. The main flaws are in fire safety, accessibility, lack of space and disorganization of layout and storage, lack of standardization, privacy, noise, ventilation and environmental control. The research sees this diagnosis as a recommendation for a project of change of the failures, valuing the success factors, for the optimization of the working environment of the case study. It is believed to have deepened the knowledge about the subject in the public sector, seeking to foster future research.

This research aimed to identify the link between the layout of workspaces in offices and the design strategies for environmental comfort. Strategies surveyed were focused on the thermal, visual and luminic comfort. In this research, visual comfort is related to issues of visual integration within and between the interior and exterior of the building. This is a case study conducted at the administrative headquarters of Centro Regional Nordeste do Instituto de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE-CRN), located in Natal/RN. The methodological strategy used was the Post-Occupancy Evaluation, which combined the survey data on the building (layout of workspaces, bioclimatic strategies adopted in the design, use of these strategies) with some techniques aimed at acquiring qualitative information related to users. The workspace layout is primordial to satisfaction and productivity of workers. Issues such as concentration, communication, privacy, personal identity, density and space efficiency, barriers (access, visual and even ventilation and lighting), among others, are associated with the layout. The environmental comfort is one of the essential elements to maintaining life quality in workplace. Moreover, it is an important factor in user`s perception of the space in which he or she are inserted. Both layout and environmental comfort issues should be collected and analyzed in the establishment phase of the programming step. That way, it is possible to get adequate answers to these questions in subsequent project phases. It was found that changes in the program that occurred over time, especially concerning persons (number and characteristics), resulted in changes in layout, generating high density and inflexible environments. It turns difficult to adjust the furniture to the occupants` requirement, including comfort needs. However, the presence of strategies for environmental quality provides comfort to spaces, ensuring that, even in situations not considered optimal, users perceive the environment in a positive way. It was found that the relationship between environmental comfort and layout takes the following forms: in changing the perception of comfort, depending on the layout of the arrangements; adjustments in layout, due to needs for comfort; and the elevation of user satisfaction and environmental quality due to the presence of strategies comfort even in situations of inadequate layout

Full textThe objective of this study was to analyze the interference of organizational management administration models and information and communication technologies in the organization of the offices physical space. Two companies that use the Non-Territorial Office, although partially, were used as case studies. The office environments were evaluated based on the diagnosis of space, which provided information concerning the occupation areas, workstations and circulation. These office users answered questionnaires concerning their work environment and it was possible to compare information about the use of Territorial and Non-Territorial offices. The study is fundamentally based on three theoretical elements from which the fundamental concepts are extracted: work, technology and the organizational culture. A history of the evolution of occupation concepts in work environments complements the theoretical basis, always relating physical space characteristics of the administrative management models to the technologies in effect at the time. This permits the observation of the offices gradual deterritorialization process.

Interior design researchers have often pointed out that office layouts tend to affect employees’ perception of personal space and the communication with others, which influences work efficiency. However, there is a lack of empirical research on the link between office layouts, personal space perception, and in-office communication. Therefore, this research aims to explore the relationship between personal space perception, in-office communication, and employees’ of different backgrounds from varying office layouts. The method of research is by survey. Utilizing questionnaires concerning the perception of personal space and in-office communication, employees of different backgrounds from four types of offices (1) Individual Processes (2) Concentrated Study (3) Group Processes (4) Transactional Knowledge participated in this study. In the end, 222 questionnaires were retrieved, with 217 of them valid. Quantitative analysis of questionnaires was conducted through descriptive statistics, factor analysis, t-test, and one-ANOVA. The results included: 1.The relationship between employees of different backgrounds and office layouts exists. 2.Personal space perception and in-office communications differ with office layouts. 3.Differences exist between the perceptions of personal space when analyzing employees of different backgrounds in different offices. 4.Differences exist between the communications when analyzing employees of different backgrounds in different offices. In conclusion, this study hopes to explain the relationship between office layouts, employees’ perception of personal space, and in-office communications, as well as providing interior designers with a better understanding of how design usage affects office employees’ perceptions of their working environment.

Offices are the main working place for the employees, so the traffic flow、lights and spaces effect the work efficiency a lot. An ideal office includes different departments, how to design the functional and improve the traffic flow furniture through analyzing the company are the main purpose for this thesis. The OECD investigation in 2015 from 38 countries tells that comparing with 2014, the working hours in Japanese and Korea is decreasing; but the working hours in Taiwan are 2150 hours, this result are higher than the average working hours(1,800 hours) from OECD. As I mention, the officers in Taiwan stay in the office for 8.8 hours every day except the 123 holidays; the working burden is increasing day by day, so the equipment and simple functional working space are out of needs, the facilities arrangements and working spaces are not suitable. Besides, offices are not the simple and chilly working environments, it emphasize for human, the working environment are more humanize、more comfortable, raising up the working efficiency people interactions and cooperation. Through redefining the working space and rearrangements, it effects working efficiency and the communication between people. This thesis will try to use Universal design and、 Morphological analysis and experts grading methods to sift through the possible elements and design more useful office desks for the users to match integral space environment arrangement and the traffic flows to raise up the working efficiency and cooperating quality.
Laughton, Keren-Amy. "The effects of workspace office layout on aspects of employee wellbeing." Thesis, 2018. https://hdl.handle.net/10539/27199.
Full textWith the change in nature of work, the spaces in which work is done has also changed, prompting research into the effects of the work environment on employees. The purpose of this study is to investigate how different types of workplace office spaces will have different impacts on aspects of wellbeing in employees. The facets explored are how employees perceive their satisfaction of Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) attributes, how they perceive their performance and health within these IEQ conditions, how they perceive their current workspace affecting their physical and psychological discomfort, and how they perceived their own psychological wellbeing. A quantitative survey was compiled from previous literature, appropriate to exploring these variables. The questionnaire was piloted at a company that owns, develops, and manages property before being conducted over a two-week period at a large health insurance company in Johannesburg, Gauteng. The final survey consisted of three subscales of the Green Building Survey (Hedge & Dorsey, 2012) measuring perceived satisfaction of indoor environmental quality and its impact on health and performance; the GABO questionnaire (Pierrette et al., 2015) assessed six aspects of perceived noise; the extended Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire assessed physical discomfort in nine body regions; perceived psychological comfort; and perceived psychological wellbeing using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale. Data were collected using an online survey platform. The final sample consisted of 1853 participants of different genders, races, ages, and organisational levels of a prominent South African organisation. The results of this study are beneficial to the field as literature pertaining to workspace layout is outdated and new research is needed as innovative trends in layout types are emerging. Most previous research on employee perceptions addresses productivity but not necessarily different aspects of perceived health, wellbeing, and comfort. It is expected that this study will contribute to finding clarity in a still-ambiguous field and will add to the present-day change in how and where work is done.

Zackey, Nicolette Mary. "Employees' experiences with new workspace layout: a user-centred approach." Thesis, 2017. https://hdl.handle.net/10539/23799.
Full textNumerous studies have shown that the office workspace environment can have an effect on employees’ performance, satisfaction, psychological wellbeing, and other such factors. As such office workspace design has gained more traction in international research and amongst organisations globally. The office space is an organisation’s second largest expense, it is therefore pertinent that organisations, who have chosen to focus on the office to enhance employee wellbeing, choose the most appropriate and optimal environment for their employees. One of the methods to ensure employees are satisfied with the space is to utilise a user-centred approach that allows employees the opportunity to comment on the space and to communicate their needs for the space. A South African organisation that has chosen to develop its space was a health insurance company that was undergoing a workspace redesign for their new buildings. The aim of this research report was to make use of a mixed method design that may have assisted the company, and the other parties involved, in gaining greater insight into whether the layout change had performed its functions effectively, as well as to ensure that the layout had accomplished the company’s goals. The research report focused on the following variables: psychological wellbeing, physical wellbeing, work engagement, job satisfaction, perceived productivity (performance), satisfaction with the workspace layout, and collaboration/interaction. The study consisted of 158 participants. The results of the study had indicated that there was a main effect relationship between department/team groups and job satisfaction. Other results of the study had found that satisfaction with the workplace layout was related to psychological wellbeing, job satisfaction, work engagement, and productivity. The results revealed that the higher the employees’ satisfaction with the workplace layout, the higher their psychological wellbeing, job satisfaction, work engagement and productivity. The qualitative component resulted in themes that were explored both theoretically and inductively. After analysis of the themes, four main themes were devised. Based on exploration of these themes it became apparent that satisfaction with one’s workplace can be contingent on factors such as, noise and distractions, privacy, operational technology (e.g. it software/hardware/systems and WIFI), functional and up-to-date technical equipment, facility accessibility, honouring of commitments/meeting expectations of the space, personal feelings and attitudes towards change and flexibility, time consumption of activities surrounding flexibility, storage facilities that are accessible, territorialism or sabotage, and interaction/communication.

Full textOffice setting is a widely acceptable means of providing an enabling environment that best facilitates employees’ performance and general productivity. This study sought to investigate the impact of office setting on employee performance using, eThekwini (KwaZulu-Natal) municipal offices and employees at the Durban City Hall, as a case study. The objectives of the study were to analyse the office design, finishes and furnishings of the head office building of eThekwini municipality and identify features in the design, finishes and furnishings in terms of their suitability and comfort of the employees; assess the impact of office settings on the performance of eThekwini municipality employees at the City Hall; and propose specific settings based interventions that would address employee health, comfort and wellbeing and thereby enhance optimum performance. The study was based on a sample of 65 City Hall staff randomly drawn from various departments and units, as well as 10 senior managers. Data for the study obtained mainly from the administration of questionnaires was analysed quantitatively using SPSS and Microsoft Excel and presented with the aid of frequency distributions, pie charts, tables, pictures and graphs. The research identified considerable office settings deficiencies which included uninspiring and old-fashioned office design and decor (largely cellular offices), use of dark wooden partitions resulting in poorly illuminated offices, and continued use of old furniture at the City Hall. The study also confirmed that the settings deficiencies had varying adverse effects on the performance of City Hall employees by between (20% - 80%). The study recommends the relocation of the City Hall head office to a new modern facility designed and furnished to suit the particular needs of the organisation. The development and operation of a real estate policy that leverages on the workplace environment to attract, retain and boost employee performance has also been recommended.
