Abstract:
In 1977 Somalia invaded Ethiopia hoping to seize the Ogaden, an Ethiopian region predominantly inhabited by ethnic Somali. Histories of this event are rare and focus exclusively on the political and military aspects of the conflict. This is not surprising given the Cold War backdrop of the conflict. This article, however, shifts the focus away from the political towards the personal. Focus here is on the different roles Ogadeni women took up in the Somali-Ethiopian war, also known as the Ogaden war. Through interviews with former actors in the conflict it became clear that women occupied a range of roles in the war, varying from victims or care-givers to active participants in militias and front-line combat. In conflicts today, Somali women still retain many of these roles. Originally some Somalis did oppose this state of affairs, today most seem to have accepted the phenomenon of female actors in the Ogaden war, even though that approval can be linked with a political agenda. Both Ogadeeni and Somali women were active in the war, transcending Somali clan lines along the way. Accounts of the women interviewed illustrate the effects of their choice to participate in the Ogaden war.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this essay is to analyze the media coverage of the case with Martin Schibbye and Johan Persson in the four biggest newspapers in Sweden in order to see how social constructions is created through the use of language. It is also of interest to see how nationality is represented in the material.  The theory is based on Edward Said’s theory of post colonialism and the prejudices that has developed from the western way of viewing ”The orient”. It is also based on Richard Dyers theory on whiteness and binary oppositions, which shows how ”whiteness” is viewed as the norm and is also never questioned. The method is critical linguistics and based on Norman Fairclough and Michael Halliday. The results from the method in critical linguistics shows how power is used in the media coverage of Martin Schibbye and Johan Persson. It shows how Schibbye and Persson are presented as human beings and as individuals and the other parts as foreign and unknown parts in the conflict.

Full text
Abstract:
The decade of the 1970s, despite representing the era of detente, superficially appeared to be one of Soviet successes and American setbacks. From Vietnam to Angola, the USSR seemed to be gaining Marxist friends in the Third World. Because of this, the Soviet Union wanted the United States to recognize it as an equal power in the world. With such acknowledgement, the Kremlin believed that negotiations to limit the arms race would then be mutually beneficial. On the other hand. President Nixon and Secretary of State Kissinger interpreted detente as a series of agreements and compromises to draw Moscow into an international system through which the United States could exercise some control over Soviet foreign relations, particularly with the Third World. These differing interpretations would prove to be the inherent flaw of detente and nowhere was this better illustrated than in the conflict in the Horn of Africa in 1974-78. This dissertation aims to trace the responses of the Ford and Carter administrations to events in the Horn of Africa and their ultimate effect on Soviet-American bilateral relations. Through archival research at the Ford and Carter Libraries, the National Archives and Records Administration, the National Security Archive, and interviews with key participants, it will discuss the formation of American policy toward the Horn and how disagreements over the region influenced superpower detente, causing President Carter's National Security Advisor, Zbigniew Brzezinski, to claim that "SALT (Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty) lies buried in the sands of the Ogaden." My particular focus will diverge from previous authors in its emphasis on the Horn of Africa conflict being the catalyst that exposed the failure of detente and a decisive element in President Carter's transition from favouring conciliation to choosing confrontation with the Soviet Union.

Blaha, David Ryan. "Pushing Marginalization: British Colonial Policy, Somali Identity, and the Gosha 'Other' in Jubaland Province, 1895 to 1925." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/76774.

Full text
Abstract:
Throughout the 19th century, large numbers of enslaved people were brought from southeastern Africa to work on Somali plantations along the Benadir Coast and Shebelle River. As these southeast Africans were manumitted or escaped bondage, many fled to the west and settled in the heavily forested and fertile Gosha district along the Juba River. Unattached, lacking security, and surrounded by Somalis-speaking groups, these refugees established agricultural communities and were forced to construct new identities. Initially these riverine peoples could easily access clan structures and political institutions of surrounding Somali sub-clans, which in pre-colonial Jubaland were relatively fluid, open, and—in time—would have allowed these groups to become assimilated into Somali society. British colonial rule however changed this flexibility. Somali identity, once porous and accessible, became increasingly more rigid and exclusive, especially towards the riverine ex-slave communities—collectively called the Gosha by the British—who were subsequently marginalized and othered by these new "Somali." This project explores how British colonial rule contributed to this process and argues that in Jubaland province a "Somali" identity coalesced largely in opposition to the Gosha.

Baudry, Julien. "La bande dessinée entre dessin de presse et culture enfantine : relecture de l'oeuvre d'Alain Saint-Ogan (1895-1974)." Paris 7, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014PA070039.

Abstract:
Alain Saint-Ogan (1895-1974) is a cartoonist mainly known for his children comic strips. However his works appear more interesting if we look at them not only as examples of the french comic art, but as evidences of the changes that occur in the fields of press cartoon and childhood culture during the first half of the 20th century. Actually, Saint-Ogan's work in litterature, comic strip, but also radio broadcasting and publicity plays an important part in the early diversifications of media in childhood culture. Above all, studying his works allows us to understand french comic's evolutions when the legacy of 19th century press cartoon meets the needs of children's culture industry

Morgan, Harry. "Formes et mythopoeia dans les littératures dessinées." Paris 7, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008PA070103.

Full text
Abstract:
Our thesis elaborates upon a previous scholarly work (Harry Morgan, Principes des littératures dessinées, Editions de l'an 2, 2003). Our aim is to contribute to an empirical theory of comics (a stripology), which places the rhetorical devices found in comic book or comic strip stories in the wider context of visual narrative but also in the narrower context of the relevant editorial form, such as a book, a print, a daily newspaper, a periodical publication (such as a weekly), etc. The analysis is centered on the interaction between the physical, semiotical, and editorial constraints of the comic narrative and the contents of the stories. This leads not onty to an examination of the peculiarities of the fictional worlds of comics, but to a wider understanding of the laws that govern such worlds. It is suggested that such a definition of an imaginary world by the formal characteristics and the narrative mechanisms of the comic form is a function of a mythopoetic potentiality of comics. The Sunday page of Zig et Puce by Alain Saint-Ogan, the newspaper strip Little Orphan Annie by Harold Gray, thé comic book The Fantastic Four by Jack Kirby and the entire œuvre of Jean-Claude Forest are examined in detail

Abstract:
After completing the Geological Geophysical and Reservoir (GGR) model revision of North East Air Serdang (NEASD) and the Guruh (GRH) field, Pertamina Hulu Energi Ogan Komering (PHE OK) evaluated the water flooding performance that has been applied since 2006. This paper explains the success story of the water flooding application using the peripheral method in the carbonate reservoir NEASD and the GRH field in the Ogan Komering Block. Water flooding was successfully applied in the NEASD and Guruh fields. The carbonate reservoirs are well connected as evidenced by tracer tests conducted in 2006. The waterflood development was based on running the simulation water injection sensitivity cases, economic evaluations, and entailed converting the unproductive wells into injector wells and building an injection system surface facilities. The approved Plan of Further Development (POFD), covered field wide application of the waterflood and performance surveillance monitoring. The POFD of water flooding in NEASD and Guruh field was approved in 2006 by the government and fulfilled all of the commitments in 2018 with oil incremental production of 4.85 MMBO from a do nothing baseline recovery factor (RF) of 26.5% going up to 34.2% (post water flooding). Although this had fulfilled the programs and economic commitment, currently both of the fields still produce about 1500 bopd. After updating the Geological Geophysical and Reservoir (GGR) model in 2019, it is predicted that the total economic recovery factor (RF) of the development can reach 41,7% by the end of the PSC contract in 2038.
