Abstract:
The Ogden Musewn of Southern Art was created in 1994 when Roger Ogden, offered his world-class collection of Southern art valued at $13 million to The University of New Orleans provided that it could be housed in an approximate facility. Roger Ogden's initial donation was of 600 works dating from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Ogden stated the reason behind his donation, "I realized that the collection could not remain the responsibility of one individual or family, but that it should belong to the public. I knew that it was incumbent on me to make plans for its placement as a whole."

Stene, Eric. "The African-American Community of Ogden, Utah: 1910-1950." DigitalCommons@USU, 1994. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/4526.

Full text
Abstract:
The African-American community of Ogden, Utah started much of its growth in the early twentieth century. Prior to the early nineteen hundreds less than one hundred African Americans lived in Ogden. The availability of jobs with the railroads brought many African Americans to Ogden in search of steady employment. Through the decades Ogden's African Americans branched out from railroad and service work into business ownership. As the African-American community grew, its members established new churches in the city. Racism and indifference had their impact on the African Americans. They found themselves segregated into specific neighborhoods and African-American males were unable to hold the priesthood in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Racism was not confined to members of the Mormon Church as the Ku Klux Klan attempted to make inroads into Ogden in the early 1920s. The Klan's limited influence lasted less than two years and soon disappeared due to efforts by the Ogden City Commission. In the 1990s African Americans still comprised a small percentage of Ogden City and Weber County. The L.D.S. Church ended priesthood denial for African Americans in 1978. The study of Ogden's African-American community provides insight into a minority community in the western United States and contrasts the differences between race relations in the West and other geographic areas of the United States.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the representation in both the public and academic arenas of the archaeological excavation at Ur, southern Iraq, during the 1920’s and 30’s through a study of the main characters involved. Sir Leonard Woolley’s excavation is still fundamental to our knowledge of archaeology in that region. Current thought criticises his approach to and interpretation of his work, as having been “Bible driven” and of little scientific validity, but ignores the value of understanding the relationship between the excavator and the wider community from which his funding derived. Drawing on the Ogden archive, this study is our first opportunity to examine how knowledge about the Ur excavations was disseminated, how the archaeological past has been created and used, and how these interpretations presented entered the zeitgeist and still resonate today. As a result of my initial research findings, I gained access to the family archives of the goldsmith James Ogden, a substantial but previously unresearched body of material that provides an almost complete photographic record of the inter-war archaeology in this region as well as a comprehensive record of press coverage and public reaction. It also contains many unpublished letters between those involved at the time, explaining their methods and motivations. This archive complements substantial quantities of unstudied material in other archives of museums and learned societies. Taken together, the archival material provides a fuller understanding of the motivations behind a highly choreographed publicity campaign that successfully enabled the excavation to continue when threatened by inter-war financial shortages. This research elicits an understanding of the social, cultural and economic factors that shaped archaeology in a society that was uneasily assimilating the impact of the new sciences on a still largely Bible reading public. I analyse all the archives in the wider context of the role played by this campaign in shaping contemporary knowledge of the archaeology of Iraq, as well as reflecting inter-war British and Iraqi society. Archaeological activity was being conducted against the dramatically changing backdrop of the Near East after the First World War, the emergence of the nation states of the area, and a growing aggression and hostility to western occupation. The traditional imperialist view of the right to possession of the excavated antiquities was being challenged as the power structure in the region began to shift and new regional identities were forged.

This reaserch is an invitation to a shared walk through the work of Thomas Ogden. Along this course, we will engage in a dialogue with Psychoanalysis through Bion and Winnicott, and with Literature through Forst and Borges. Following Bion, we may say that the experience of reading instrumentalizes the apparatus for thinking with new forms wich are the result of the intersection between the ways of thinking of the author and the reader. Following Winnicott, we conceive that the deep contact with the other, wich, in the case of this research, represents the experience of reading a literary work, leads immediately towards the true self. Strolling through the Library of Borges, we observe the way language works in building subjective truths, wich, exemplified in his fictions, open to the reader imaginary portls towards a true experience. In forst, we underline certain expressions - such as oversounds, sounds of living speech, the sound fo sense, fecthing words - wich contribute to the important conception of the voice of the other that constitute us. Understanding the body as the locus of the experience poetic reveries wich point to the idea that truth is always construct , referenced in the experience of the creator and the observer or, in the case of literature, the reader and the writer.

Schirmer, Tad William. "Sequential Thrusting Beneath the Willard Thrust Fault, Wasatch Mountains, Ogden, Utah." DigitalCommons@USU, 1985. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/4516.

Full text
Abstract:
The downstructure of viewing geologic maps, balanced and cross sections, and hanging-wall-sequence diagrams are applied to produce the first comprehensive synthesis of the structure below the willard thrust sheet. Development of the duplex beneath the Willard thrust may be explained with a "piggyback" thrust model where younger thrust slices form below and fold an older, overlying thrust sheet. Progressive failure of the footwall ramp of the Willard thrust sheet extended the sole thrust eastward and produced a duplex consisting of thrust slices (horses) which adhered to the overriding thrust sheet where it ramped from a lower sole thrust to an upper decollement horizon. The resulting structural culmination produced a distinct antiform in the Willard thrust sheet. The duplex is here named the Ogden duplex. Frontal folds (formed at ramps perpendicular to transport) and lateral folds (formed at ramps parallel to transport) mark the margin of Individual horses within the duplex. Folded thrusts, thrust-splay relationships, and lateral overlap of horses help determine the sequence of thrusting. The involvement of cratonic foreland basement rocks (Farmington Canyon Complex) in thrust slices within the Ogden duplex is similar to the Moine thrust belt in northern Scotland and pinpoints this area within zone III of Boyer and Elliott's (1982) model of a thrust system dominated by a major thrust sheet. The basement rocks form the core of several horses which moved a minimum of 9.6 km. Total shortening within the Ogden duplex is estimated at 8 to 12 km. The sequence of thrusting is proposed from higher to lower: the willard thrust fault moved first, then the Ogden thrust fault and, finally, the Taylor and Weber thrust system (here named). Striking similarities between the Ogden thrust fault, the Weber-Taylor thrust system, and the Durst thrust fault geometries suggest that they are all part of the same system.

Abstract:
The boundary between the Omineca Belt and the Intermontane Belt in Central British Columbia represents the suture between autochthonous North America (Barkerville Terrane) and several allochthonous terranes accreted from the west In the Quesnel Lake region allochthonous sedimentary and volcanic rocks of Quesnellia Terrane, accreted in the Jurassic, are in sharp tectonic contact with underlying siliclastic and carbonate metasedimentary rocks. The Ogden Peak study area is located 10 km east of and structurally below this suture zone and is thus well situated for observing deformational styles within the autochthonous package. Rocks exposed near Ogden Peak comprise the Hadrynian(?) to Paleozoic(?) Snowshoe Group and local diabasic intrusions. These rocks record a deformational history involving four phases of folding (D₁-D₄) and later brittle faulting (D₅). Earliest recognizable structures consist of recumbant isoclinal folds with a well-developed transposed foliation. This foliation is tightly folded about northwest trending, southwest verging second phase structures. Northwest trending third phase structures and northeast trending fourth phase structures occur as both crenulations and open buckles. Southeast dipping faults cut all earlier structures with tens of meters of normal offset Phase 1 and Phase 2 fold styles are compatible with a flattened buckle fold mechanism of formation, associated with elevated temperatures and reduced viscosity contrasts across layering. Later fold styles are controlled by higher viscosity contrasts and detachment along layering. All phases of deformation are dominated by semi-brittle mechanisms of dislocation slip and glide, mechanical twinning, and microcracking. Temperature activated diffusional creep is only locally active and does not contribute appreciably to total strain. The mineral assemblage garnet-staurolite-kyanite defines a metamorphic peak late in D₂. Metamorphic temperatures of approximately 530° C at 6.0 kb have been determined using garnet/biotite geothermometry. Extensive retrograde metamorphism spans D₃ and D₄, overprinting prograde assemblages and providing evidence for abundant fluids late in deformation. Late phase 1 diabase dykes locally intruded an area to the southeast of Ogden Peak. Major and trace element analyses of samples from these intrusions suggest a calc-alkaline, volcanic arc affinity.

This thesis will center on the housing market of the Salt Lake City-Ogden Metropolitan Statistical Area. The paper will explore in detail as much as possible what has driven and continues to drive the SLC-Ogden economy. It will look at historical economic indicators of population, employment and wages and how the housing market has moved in conjunction with these indicators. With this background, it will try to make as educated projection as possible at what rate these economic indicators (and in turn, the area economy) will continue to grow. With these projections, this thesis will then use regression analysis to forecast single family home prices, rents of multi-family units, and future construction of both types of housing for the Salt Lake City-Ogden metro area.

Abstract:
Relationships established between theories and practices in the psychoanalytic clinical situation are not usually explicitly examined in the theoretical writings of psychoanalysts; such relationships, however, are necessarily implicit to their practices and discourses. The present work intends to investigate the complexities inherent to these relationships, which in our view are not limited to a causal and bidirectional conception. In order to do so, we have referred to concepts from epistemology and, most fundamentally, psychoanalysis itself. Ogden\'s \"A new reading of the origins of object relations theory\" has allowed us the consideration of theories as objects liable to receive libidinal cathexes, so that once they are lost, they will need to be mourned by the analyst. Such a loss occurs once the theory stops responding to clinical demands, that is, once it stops supporting the analyst in his contact with patients. Mourning and melancholia have thus served us as a metaphor to investigate the ways in which theories become present in the analyst and, consequently, in the clinical situation, for they engender different internal objects. If the analyst mourns the loss of the theory, it gets incorporated into his subsidiary knowledge, providing thus the bases for traumatic encounters with patients and new theories. If, on the other hand, the analyst cannot mourn, the theory gets then rigidly fixed into the analyst\'s subsidiary knowledge, therefore preventing the clinical situation to come forward in its full traumatic otherness.

This study assesses the process capabilities and competencies of Air Force Material Command's (AFMC) Ogden Air Logistics Center (OO-ALC), Contracting Directorate at Hill AFB, UT. This project is conducted with the sponsorship and assistance of the Acquisition Research Program. The assessment uses a cross-sectional questionnaire covering contracting processes and procedure. The assessment spans across five units and delves into six different key contracting process areas. The purpose of this study is to analyze the OO-ALC's contracting processes and procedures to better establish a baseline for contract management maturity. This model, in conjunction with the Contract Management Maturity Assessment Tool (CMMAT), is used to gain information on potential areas of weakness and how to leverage those with strengths. Additionally, this study produces an analysis of the ethical culture currently present in the OO-ALC through the administration of an ethics questionnaire. In these times of significant transformation, it is critical to have mature contracting processes and procedures in place to insure continuity and continuous improvement throughout the organization as well as high ethical standards.

Geotechnical site characteristics are a function of the subsurface elastic moduli and the geologic structures. This study integrates borehole, surface and laboratory measurements for a geotechnical investigation that is focused on investigating shear-wave velocity (Vs) variation and its implication to geotechnical aspects of the Ogden test site in eastern Kansas. The area has a potential of seismicity due to the seismic zone associated with the Nemaha formation where earthquakes pose a moderate hazard. This study is in response to recent design standards for bridge structures require integrating comprehensive geotechnical site characterization. Furthermore, evaluation of dynamic soil properties is important for proper seismic response analysis and soil modeling programs. In this study, near surface geophysical site characterization in the form of 2D shear-wave velocity (Vs) structure that is compared with laboratory measurements of elastic moduli and earth properties at simulated in situ overburden pressure conditions and synergy with downhole Acoustic Televiewer time and amplitude logs, proved very robust “validated” workflow in site characterization for geotechnical purposes. An important component of a geotechnical site characterization is the evaluation of in-situ shear modulus, Poisson’s ratio and reliable and accurate elastic modulus ([lambda]) and shear modulus ([mu]) estimates are important in a good geotechnical site characterization. The geophysical site characterization, undertaken in this study, will complement and help in extrapolating drilling and core-based properties deduced by the geotechnical engineers interested at the test site.

Abstract:
After the decline of Latin, philosophers and linguists started developing the idea of creating a new universal language for international communication. Many languages were developed, some of them were designed to be exclusively written, some others were created a priori, meaning that they tried not to draw upon already existing languages, and others a posteriori. These languages were either combinations of already existing word roots and language systems (e.g. Esperanto) or simplifications of languages. One example of the latter is Basic English, created by linguists Charles K. Ogden and Armstrong Richards. With a core vocabulary of 850 words, it aimed at being the first step to learn Standard English, the language that was becoming de facto the global language. The scope of this thesis is to give an overview of the quest for a universal language and analyse the political and linguistic implications of Charles K. Ogden’s Basic English.

Abstract:

Lu, Yuan-Chiao. "Probabilistic Analysis of the Material and Shape Properties for Human Liver." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/64798.

Full text
Abstract:
Realistic assessments of liver injury risk for the entire occupant population require incorporating inter-subject variations into numerical human models. The main objective of this study was to quantify the variations in shape and material properties of the human liver. Statistical shape analysis was applied to analyze the geometrical variation using a surface set of 15 adult human livers recorded in an occupant posture. Principal component analysis was then utilized to obtain the modes of variation, the mean model, and a set of 95% statistical boundary shape models. Specimen-specific finite element (FE) models were employed to quantify material and failure properties of human liver parenchyma. The mean material model parameters were then determined, and a stochastic optimization approach was utilized to determine the standard deviations of the material model parameters. The distributions of the material parameters were used to develop probabilistic FE models of the liver implemented in THUMS human FE model to simulate oblique impact tests under three impact speeds. In addition, the influence of organ preservation on the biomechanical responses of animal livers was investigated using indentation and tensile tests. Results showed that the first five modes of the human liver shape models accounted for more than 70% of the overall anatomical variations. The Ogden material model with two parameters showed a good fit to experimental tensile data before failure. Significant changes of the biomechanical responses of liver parenchyma were found after cooling or freezing storage. The force-deflection responses of THUMS model with probabilistic liver material models were within the test corridors obtained from cadaveric tests. Significant differences were observed in the maximum and minimum principal Green-Lagrangian strain values recorded in the THUMS liver model with the default and updated average material properties. The results from this study could help in the development of more biofidelic human models, which may provide a better understanding of injury mechanisms of the liver during automobile collisions.

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to develop robust finite element models of abdominal organs (viz. liver, kidney and spleen), by performing experiments on each organ’s constituents to extract the material properties. Understanding the mechanical properties of the organs of the human body is the most critical aspect of numerical modeling for medical applications and impact biomechanics. Many researchers work on identifying mechanical properties of these organs both in vivo and in vitro considering the high injury percentage of abdominal trauma in vehicle accidents and for easy detection of diseases such as viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, cancer etc. In all the current available finite element human body models the abdominal organs are characterized as linear elastic or linear visco-elastic material, where as the materials actually show a non linear hyper elastic behavior. In this study the organs are modeled for first time as hyper visco-elastic materials and with individual constituents of each (viz. the capsule and veins). To characterize the tissue, static experiments are performed on individual parts of the abdominal organs, like incase of liver, Glisson’s capsule and hepatic veins are tested under static tension where as liver parenchyma is tested under static compression and under shear at low frequency. In case of kidneys, renal capsule is tested under static tension and renal cortex is tested under static compression, where as spleen tissue is tested under static compression. The results of the these experiments are used to characterize the tissues as hyper elastic, visco elastic and hyper visco elastic materials in the form of Ogden, Mooney Rivlin and Maxwell materials. These material models are further used to develop the finite element model of organs for human and pigs. The developed models are validated by performing in vivo dynamic tests on pigs, whereas using dynamic tests data from the literature on human liver and reproducing the same with the numerical approach in the LS Dyna explicit solver. The developed models are observed to be robust and can be used for accident reconstruction as well for biomedical applications viz., to develop virtual surgical environments & to plan surgeries or train surgeons

Xu, Jia Cheng. "Evaluation of Thoracic Injury Risk of Heavy Goods Vehicle Occupants during Steering Wheel Rim Impacts to Different Rib Levels." Thesis, KTH, Medicinteknik och hälsosystem, 2019. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-266357.

Full text
Abstract:
The interior of heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) differs from passenger cars. Both the steering wheel and the occupant are positioned differently in a HGV and increases the risk of steering wheel rim impacts. Such impact scenarios are relatively unexplored compared to passenger car safety studies that are more prevalent within the field of injury biomechanics. The idea with using human body models (HBMs) is to complement current crash test dummies with biomechanical data. Furthermore, the biofidelity of a crash dummy for loading similar to a steering wheel rimimpact is relatively unstudied and especially to different rib levels. Therefore, the aim with this thesis was to evaluate HGV occupant thoracic response between THUMS v4.0 and Hybrid III (H3) during steering wheel rim impacts with respect to different rib levels (level 1-2, 3-4, 6-7, 7-8, 9-10) with regards to ribs, aorta, liver, and spleen. To the author’s best knowledge, use of local injury risk functions for thoracic injuries is fairly rare compared to the predominant usage of global injury criteria that mainly predicts the most commonthoracic injury risk, i.e. rib fractures. Therefore, local injury criteria using experimental test datahave been developed for the ribs and the organs. The measured parameters were chest deflectionand steering wheel to thorax contact force on a global level, whilst 1st principal Green-Lagrangestrains was assessed for the rib and the organ injury risk. The material models for the liver and the spleen were remodelled using an Ogden material model based on experimental stress-strain data to account for hyperelasticity. Rate-dependency was included by iteration of viscoelastic parameters. The contact modelling of the organs was changed from a sliding contact to a tied contact to minimize unrealistic contact separations during impact. The results support previous findings that H3 needs additional instrumentation to accurately register chest deflection for rib levels beyond its current range, namely at ribs 1-2, 7-8, and 9-10. For THUMS, the chest deflection were within reasonable values for the applied velocities, but there were no definite injury risk. Fact is, the global injury criteria might overpredict the AIS3 injury risk (rib fractures) for rib level 1-2, 7-8, and 9-10. The rib strains could not be correlated with the measured chest deflections. This was explained by the unique localized loading characterized by pure steering wheel rim impact that mainly affected the sternum and the rib cartilage while minimizing rib deformation. The organ strains indicate some risk of rupture where the spleen deforms the most at rib levels 3-4 and 6-7, and the liver and the aorta at rib levels 6-7 and 7-8. This study provides a framework for complementing H3 with THUMS for HGV occupant safety with emphasis on the importance of using local injury criteria for functional injury prediction, i.e. prediction of injury risk using parameters directly related to rib fracture or organ rupture. Local injury criteria are thus a powerful safety assessment tool as it is independent on exterior loading such as airbag, steering wheel hub, or seat belt loading. It was noticed that global injury criteria with very localized impacts such as rim impacts have not been studied and will affect rib fracture risk differently than what has been studied using airbag or seat belt restraints. However, improvements are needed to accurately predict thoracic injury risk at a material level by finding more data for the local injury risk functions. Conclusively, it is clear that Hybrid III has insufficient instrumentation and is in need of upgrades to register chest deflections at multiple rib levels. Furthermore, the following are needed: better understanding of global injury criteria specific for HGV occupant safety evaluation, more data for age-dependent (ribs) and rate-dependent (organs) injury risk functions, a tiebreak contact with tangential sliding for better organ kinematics during impacts, and improving the biofidelity of the material models using data from tissue level experiments.

Abstract:
In an attempt to improve the quality in finite element analysis of thermoformed components, a method for predicting the thickness distribution is presented. The strain induced anisotropic material behaviour in the amorphous polymers of concern is also taken into account in the method. The method comprises of obtaining raw material data from experiments, followed by a simulation of the vacuum thermoforming process where hyperelastic material behaviour is assumed. The theory of hyperelasticity that was applied was based on the Ogden model and implemented in the FE-software LS-DYNA. Material behaviour from thermoformed prototypes is examined by experiments and implemented together with the mapped results from the thermoforming simulation in a succeeding FE-model. For the latter, the three-parameter Barlat model was suggested, giving the possibility to account for anisotropic material behaviour based on an initial plastic strain.

Buckley, Morgan. "Creative performer agency in the collaborative compositional process." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2018. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/278870.

Full text
Abstract:
The early-twentieth-century culture in western art music of idolizing the composer as the autonomous creative genius has been challenged by recent developments across musicology and creativity research literature. The composer’s music is now regarded as the product of a collaborative network, influenced by all who come into contact with it—first and foremost the performer. Yet, the nature of the performer’s creative impact on the compositional process remains under-explored. This thesis is centred on a qualitative artistic research project, designed to identify and critically evaluate the prospective extent and scope of creative performer agency; it aims to ascertain how a typical lack of familiarity with the instrument may affect the composer’s creative practice, and to reveal key factors that shape the nature and the consequences of composer-performer interaction and collaboration. It proceeds by commissioning new works for guitar from a range of composers for different performers, and by documenting and analysing the processes of collaboration that result. This research agenda challenges the perception of distinct creative roles that remains resilient in present-day cultural understandings and discourse. The findings are intended to broaden understanding of contemporary collaborative practices in the compositional process for the guitar and generalize to the guitar repertoire of the long twentieth century, during which the majority of substantial works were composed in collaboration. The thesis also contributes to a developing and generalizable framework of practice-led research literature that analyses music-making by recognizing the multiple loci and their interactions that underpin all aspects of the creative processes. Chapter 1 discusses the establishment of the creative hegemony of the composer and its opposing currents across disciplines from the late romantic period to the late twentieth century. Chapter 2 comprises an indicative chronology of select collaborations in the long twentieth-century guitar repertoire and an overview of relevant practice-led research projects in performance studies. Ethnographic methodologies are reviewed in Chapter 3 and the fieldwork commissions are analysed in Chapters 4 and 5. Finally, Chapter 6 comprises an evaluation of the performer’s creative agency and its significance when placed in broader frameworks of contemporary guitar practices, contemporary composition across instrumentations, generalizing to historical guitar collaboration and its implications for creativity research.

Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to discuss what happens during a psychoanalytic experience, when something with a potential for change and growth is generated and what kind of linking favors it. Also, it runs through a fundamental psychic phenomenon of a specific symbiotic quality, capable of a high degree of regenerative and/or constitutive parts of the self. This paper is justified by the fact that more and more the psychoanalytic process has been seen as a result of the pair s interpenetration (transference/ countertransference) and for what is stimulated in the analyst as knowledge about his/her patient psychodynamics. Some clinical hypotheses have been put forward to explain the occurrences of phenomena that are analogous to a kind of immersion in affectionate dimensions of low awareness but necessary to achieve a deep affectionate interaction that would keep symbiotic fusion fantasies. Seven topics are highlighted in order to corroborate to the institution of a link that could support this symbiotic process and the intensity of the emotions present on it: comprehension, love, confidence, loss, truth, companionship and closeness X distance. Results of this research related to clinical aspects are the maternal holding function, as an integrating experience that follows and supports moments of turbulence, a kind of safety net under the trapeze offering security and also the phenomenon of a symbiosis as a fundamental constitutive part of the psychism. This development of the libido previous to the PS ↔ D oscillation could be part of the same dynamics and then, would be turned into a three-part circulation process: symbiotic, disintegrated, integrated

The purpose of this essay is to analyze the media coverage of the case with Martin Schibbye and Johan Persson in the four biggest newspapers in Sweden in order to see how social constructions is created through the use of language. It is also of interest to see how nationality is represented in the material.  The theory is based on Edward Said’s theory of post colonialism and the prejudices that has developed from the western way of viewing ”The orient”. It is also based on Richard Dyers theory on whiteness and binary oppositions, which shows how ”whiteness” is viewed as the norm and is also never questioned. The method is critical linguistics and based on Norman Fairclough and Michael Halliday. The results from the method in critical linguistics shows how power is used in the media coverage of Martin Schibbye and Johan Persson. Full text
Abstract:
The decade of the 1970s, despite representing the era of detente, superficially appeared to be one of Soviet successes and American setbacks. From Vietnam to Angola, the USSR seemed to be gaining Marxist friends in the Third World. Because of this, the Soviet Union wanted the United States to recognize it as an equal power in the world. With such acknowledgement, the Kremlin believed that negotiations to limit the arms race would then be mutually beneficial. On the other hand. President Nixon and Secretary of State Kissinger interpreted detente as a series of agreements and compromises to draw Moscow into an international system through which the United States could exercise some control over Soviet foreign relations, particularly with the Third World. These differing interpretations would prove to be the inherent flaw of detente and nowhere was this better illustrated than in the conflict in the Horn of Africa in 1974-78. This dissertation aims to trace the responses of the Ford and Carter administrations to events in the Horn of Africa and their ultimate effect on Soviet-American bilateral relations. Through archival research at the Ford and Carter Libraries, the National Archives and Records Administration, the National Security Archive, and interviews with key participants, it will discuss the formation of American policy toward the Horn and how disagreements over the region influenced superpower detente, causing President Carter's National Security Advisor, Zbigniew Brzezinski, to claim that "SALT (Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty) lies buried in the sands of the Ogaden." My particular focus will diverge from previous authors in its emphasis on the Horn of Africa conflict being the catalyst that exposed the failure of detente and a decisive element in President Carter's transition from favouring conciliation to choosing confrontation with the Soviet Union.

This dissertation considers the use of orchestra bells as a solo instrument. I use three examples taken from chamber literature (Drumming by Steve Reich, Why Patterns? by Morton Feldman, and Ave by Franco Donatoni) to demonstrate uses of the instrument in an ensemble setting. I use six solo, unaccompanied orchestra bell pieces (Twelve Bell Canons by Robert Morris, Katarynka by Marta Ptaszyńska, Over by Stuart Saunders Smith, A Little Suite and an Encore Tango by Will Ogdon, Breaks Through by Lafayette Gilchrist, and Bells for New Orleans by Roscoe Mitchell) to illustrate the instrument’s expressive, communicative ability. In the discussion of each piece, I include brief background information, the composer’s musical language in the piece and performance considerations. I interviewed composers of these solo works to complete the research for this document to discuss their musical language and their thoughts on writing for solo orchestra bells.

Full text
Abstract:
Throughout the 19th century, large numbers of enslaved people were brought from southeastern Africa to work on Somali plantations along the Benadir Coast and Shebelle River. As these southeast Africans were manumitted or escaped bondage, many fled to the west and settled in the heavily forested and fertile Gosha district along the Juba River. Unattached, lacking security, and surrounded by Somalis-speaking groups, these refugees established agricultural communities and were forced to construct new identities. Initially these riverine peoples could easily access clan structures and political institutions of surrounding Somali sub-clans, which in pre-colonial Jubaland were relatively fluid, open, and—in time—would have allowed these groups to become assimilated into Somali society. British colonial rule however changed this flexibility. Somali identity, once porous and accessible, became increasingly more rigid and exclusive, especially towards the riverine ex-slave communities—collectively called the Gosha by the British—who were subsequently marginalized and othered by these new "Somali." This project explores how British colonial rule contributed to this process and argues that in Jubaland province a "Somali" identity coalesced largely in opposition to the Gosha.

A systematic study of post-thrombolytic haemostasis has rarely been performed. In 80 consecutive patients, we have prospectively studied at hours 0, 2 and 24 the following parameters: fibrinogen, plasminogen, alpha2-antiplasmin, factor XIII, fibrin(ogen) Degradation Products (FDP), D-dimers, haematocrit and platelet count. Comprehensive statistical studies calculated correlations of the haemostatic values betwen themselves and with 38 etiological and clinical parameters. Molecular dynamics. Two changes between h0 and h2 were statistically independent: an increase in FDP and D-Dimers; a decrease in fibrinogen, plasminogen, alpha2-antiplasmin and factor XIII. At h2, the decrease in fibrinogen was significantly correlated with that of plasminogen (0.48, p = 0.01), alpha2-antiplasmin (0.48, p = 0.004), and factor XIII (0.44, p = 0.01). The decrease in plasminogen was significantly correlated with those of antifibrinolytic components, alpha2-antiplasmin (r=0.77, p<0.001) and factor XIII (0.47, p=0.02). To our knowledge, such an activation of antifibrinolytic components had not hitherto been mentioned. The h2 decrease of plasminogen was correlated with cardioembolic etiology (p=0.04) and final poor oucome (p=0.03), a fact possibly due to intense thrombolysis of large clots. Patients having early parenchymal hematomas (PH) showed h2 haemostasis disturbances: high FDP (p=0.01), and low fibrinogen (p=0.01). The decrease in fibrinogen less than 2g/L multiplies the odds of early PH by a factor 12.82. Thus, we confirm the model of an “early fibrinogen degradation coagulopathy” predictive of hematomas, which had been coined by the Lyon thrombolysis team in 2004

Mauchien, Thomas Kevin. "A fracture mechanics approach to accelerated life testing for cathodic delamination at polymer/metal interfaces." 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/21782.

Full text
Abstract:
This work presents a fracture mechanics analysis of the cathodic delamination problem for the polyurethane/titanium and polyurea/steel interfaces. The nonlinear behavior of both polymers was investigated. The recent Marlow model was used to define the strain energy function of the polymers. Viscoelastic effects of the polyurea were also studied. The Marlow model was associated with a nine-term Prony series. This model was seen to represent experimental data relatively well for a wide range of strain rates both in tension and compression. The driving force for delamination, the strain energy release rate G, is presented for both interfaces. Cathodic delamination data for several temperatures are presented as crack growth rate as a function of crack driving force. The approach recognizes that both temperature and stress can be used as accelerated life testing parameters.

Singh, Eeshitw Kaushal. "A Numerical Implementation of an Artery Model Using Hybrid Fem." Thesis, 2016. http://etd.iisc.ernet.in/handle/2005/2875.

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is to develop a hybrid _nite element formulation to carry out stress analysis of arteries. To the best of our knowledge, a hybrid _nite element impel mentation of the Holzapfel-Ogden artery model has not been carried out before. Since arteries are thin `shell-type' structures, they are subjected to membrane, shear and volumetric locking in case when standard _nite elements are used. Since hybrid _nite elements are known to overcome these problems, we develop hybrid hexahedral element formulations (both lower and higher-order) for artery analysis. We demonstrate The better coarse mesh accuracy of hybrid elements, which are based on a two-_eld variational formulation, over conventional displacement based elements. Typically, wend that three or four extra levels of renement are required with conventional elements to achieve the ame accuracy as hybrid elements. The recently proposed Holzapfel-Ogden constitutive model for the artery and its implementation both within the conventional and hybrid _nite element frameworks is discussed. The numerical implementation is particularly challenging due to the presence of _bers which can only take tensile loads. The mathematically exact tangent stiness matrix that we have derived in this work is crucial in ensuring convergence of the numerical strategy.
