Abstract Singapore, with a five million population, has a vibrant charitable sector with over 2000 registered charities attracting approximately USD$2.18 billion in annual donations. How did Singapore’s charitable sector achieve its current level when it has been, in the past, segregated along mainly religious, race and clan-based communities? This paper explores this question by piecing together the current ecosystem, regulatory and tax infrastructure which facilitates the charitable sector in Singapore. Central to the development of the charitable sector has been the Singapore government’s r

In 1869, the Cincinnati school board ended a forty-year tradition of Bible reading in the schools in an attempt to encourage Catholics to use them, thus provoking national controversy and a lawsuit brought by pro-Bible advocates. The original article required the General Assembly to establish a committee of three commissioners to make recommendations to the General Assembly. The resulting code governed civil practice in the Ohio courts until 1970, when the Ohio Supreme Court, acting under the Modern Courts Amendment, revised Ohio’s rules to conform more closely to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Abstract Article XI governs the apportionment of seats in the Ohio General Assembly, one of the most important and controversial issues in Ohio constitutional and political history. Under the 1802 Constitution, the General Assembly had total control over the apportionment of seats in the Ohio House and Senate, and the number of seats and their apportionment largely depended upon the party in power. And gerrymandering was a common practice. The 1851 Ohio Constitution sought to address this issue by transferring responsibility for apportionment to a board consisting of the governor, the state au

In many ways, Ohio resembled Massachusetts: religious reformers pointed to the example of Prussia in a successful campaign to introduce legislative change. In other respects, however, the case of Ohio differed. One important contrast between the course of the Common School Awakening in the two states involves the scope of the legislative victories achieved in each. In Massachusetts, the bo

The 140-year history of the Board of Guardians, later the Welfare Board, is traced with stress on the desire of Leeds Jewry to look after its own poor. Finding this optimal profile is a challenging optimization problem and requires prior knowledge of the entire driving cycle.
