Carbon remnants coat the surfaces of the combustion chamber, piston, and valves. As piston deposits thicken, they increase the risk of a power cylinder seizure. More restrictive emission standards require careful power cylinder design to control piston deposits, specifically in the top land and top ring groove.

Following the DWH oil spill event, crude oil reaching the shoreline of Gulf of Mexico produced petroleum oil deposit with a range of distinct geometries, including sphere tar balls and horizontal tar sheets. Експериментально встановлено, що об’єм облямівки розчину ПАР для витіснення залишкової нафти повинен бути не меншим 40-60% від об’єму нафтонасичених пор пласта, а масова концентрація ПАР у витіснювальному агенті - 0,03-0,05%.

Centrifuged fine tailings (CFT) technology was developed to reduce volumes of fluid fine tailings (FFT) stored in tailings ponds at oil sands mines. Increasing FFT inventories in tailings ponds results from slow settlement of clay minerals suspended in oil sands process-affected water (OSPW). High sodium (Na) concentrations in OSPW increase the electrical double layer (EDL) thickness at clay-mineral surfaces, which hinders aggregation and, therefore, settlement. Το φαινόμενο παρατηρείται κυρίως σε περιοχές άντλησης όπου το πετρέλαιο βρίσκεται εγκλωβισμένο σε αμμώδεις περιοχές (ψαμμιτικοί ταμιευτήρες). Το αντλούμενο πετρέλαιο συμπαρασύρει μαζί του κόκκους άμμου, οι οποίοι εισχωρούν στον μηχανολογικό εξοπλισμό της εξόρυξης προκαλώντας βλάβες.
