Abstract:
Plants are being engineered for enhanced ethanol production; however, challenges remain in meeting the demand for bioenergy that is expected to double by 2030. Therefore, targeting carbon accumulation in the form of energy-dense oils in nonseed biomass is considered a superior alternative for bioenergy production. Although oils in the form of triacylglycerols (TAGs) are typically stored in seed tissues, various nonseed tissues such as mesocarp, tubers, stems and leaves also serve as storage tissues for TAG accumulation in plants. Moreover, the biomass of these tissues is generally far greater

Oil palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) is one of the major solid wastes from palm oil processing. EFB is a lignocellulosic biomass and has the potential to be converted into microbial oil through biochemical routes, where the oils can be further used for biodiesel production. This PhD research aimed to develop and optimise a process for microbial oil production from EFB. The microbial oil production process involves cultivation by oleaginous microorganisms including microalgae, yeasts and fungi on EFB hydrolysates as carbon substrates. Bioethanol is often viewed as one of the solutions to the tight gasoline supplies in North America. Although bioethanol is already available in the market, there are a number of problems associated with the current processes for the production of bioethanol. For these first generation processes, the feedstocks for production are usually energy crops. The most common energy crops in North America are corn and wheat. There were two main objectives of this project. The first one was to determine the optimum pyrolysis temperature for maximising the organics yield and to investigate the properties of the bio-oils produced. To achieve this objective, pyrolysis experiments were conducted using a bench-scale (150 g/h) reactor system, followed by bio-oil analysis. It was found that the reactor bed temperature that could give the highest organics yiel

Abstract:
This thesis work focuses on multiphase flow in the oil and gas industry. As differences in temperatures and pressures come to play from the reservoir to the surface, in tubing and in pipelines, gas tend to dissolve and evolve out from oil, with water and solid particles making their way into the production flow stream, giving rise to a multiphase gas-liquid-solid production and transportation. A review of sand and fines production worldwide was carried out and concluded that sand production is a common occurrence in the petroleum industry, present in all the major oil producing regions of the

Abstract:
When certain oils and polymers are heated under an inert atmosphere, a high viscosity liquid forms. Examples include crude oil, coal tar, and PVC. Upon further heating, this liquid becomes a progressively harder solid called pitch. Pitch that contains crystalline areas is called mesophase pitch. Mesophase pitch is required for the production of graphite. The purpose of the research was to investigate whether anthracene oil can be used for the production of mesophase pitch for sintering purposes. Sintering involves heating a powder under pressure to produce a solid. Anthracene oil is a low-valu

Abstract:
Phenol-formaldehyde adhesives are important adhesives known to have superior water resistance capacity and high mechanical strength when utilized in wood-based applications. Due to unsustainability and environmental issues associated with the use of fossil fuels, there is an urgent need to look for alternative raw materials, which are renewable in nature. Pinyon-juniper biomass has been found to be a suitable replacement for petroleum-based phenol because it is renewable, abundant, and readily available. In this thesis, bio-oil produced from the pyrolysis of pinyon-juniper biomass using red mu
