The 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico awakened communities to the increased risk of large-scale damage along their coastlines presented by new technology in deep water drilling. The 2010 spill took place in a sociotechnical system that can be described as complex and tightly coupled, and therefore prone to normal accidents. However, the entities in

Oil tankers and other kinds of ships are among the suspected offenders of illegal discharges. The international legislation contains minor and well-defined exceptions related to ocean areas (internal waters, marine protected areas, MARPOL “special” areas, territorial seas or exclusive economic zones). These areas often determine whether an action is considered legal or not and define the rights and obligations, including law enforcement oblig

Abstract:
The environmental impacts of oil pollution in the Niger Delta have been well-documented, with research centered on transnational environmental justice issues, institutional failings at government level, and the political strategies of high profile representatives of the Ogoni community. However, the responses of affected communities has elicited relatively limited attention from academic researchers, and in particular, little is understood about the complex factors that shape how households have sought to tackle the impact of environmental degradation. This thesis addresses this gap by analysi

With emerging content forums blurring the distinctions between journalistic paradigms, this study helps illuminate those which best promote alternative practice. A content analysis of Deepwater Horizon oil spill coverage compared three platforms for online citizen journalism: corporate (CNN iReport), alternative (Indymedia), and independent blogs. News stories were coded for sources, links, author-reader interaction, mobilizing information, tone for the liable parties' ability and intent in handling the disaster, and contestation of official information. Results show that Indymedia was the mos

To prevent oil and light liquids from causing damage at wastewater treatment facilities and the environment, a functional oil separator is important. The purpose of this study is to examine which vehicle operations have an oil separator installed and how they supervise its functionality in Arvidsjaur municipality. A questionnaire was used at the interview with all the owners with an oil separator. For those not able to participate in the interview, the same questionnaire was sent by email. The study showed that 14 of the total 15 owners had oil separator at their property and the majority of t

Svenska kraftnät is the Swedish transmission system operator, responsible for the national electrical grid with power lines of 220 kV and 400 kV, and the electrical substations of the grid. In this master thesis an old substation located in a sensitive environmental area is inspected and its environmental risks defined and assessed. From this “worst case scenario” measures are recommended, that should be applicable on other existing substations, and for new constructed substations. This thesis is limited to a more detailed analysis on how oil spill can be handled. The insulating oil is used in

Several Arctic council reports conclude that oil spills are the most significant threat to the Arctic ecosystem. Some studies have shown that in-situ burning (ISB) of oil spills over water can remove more than 90% of the oil, and is the most promising technology for an efficient response to oil spills in the Arctic region. The definition of "In situ" is intentional, controlled burning of oil in place (i.e., without extracting or removing the oil first). Earlier studies [Bellino (WPI 2012), Farahani, (WPI 2014)] have investigated burning behavior of crude oil on ice, similar to what one would

Although the “genome as a blueprint” metaphor has been pervasive in biology, recent advances in molecular biology have revealed a complex network of regulatory machinery that dynamically regulated molecular processes in response to environmental conditions. However, these patterns, as well as the evolutionary processes that underlie them, remain understudied in natural conditions. In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill released an estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, making landfall on salt marsh habitat dominated by the foundation species Spartina alterniflora. On the morning of June 19, 1991, approximately 3, 790 L (1,000 gallons) of heavy fuel oil were spilled into the waters of Port Everglades, Florida. The oil impacted one of several mitigation sites located in John U. Lloyd State Park (JUL). These sites were planted with Rhizophora mangle and Spartina alterniflora prior to the spill. Laguncularia racemosa and Avicennia germinans had also established themselves through natural recruitment. After the spill, these seedlings were coated with oil in varying amounts depending upon their location relative to the intervening oil slick and their elevatio
