Abstract:
Due to several reasons, treatment methods for a certain waste are oftennot available locally in the waste handling and management industry. This is especially true for regions which are not densely populated. This requires transports, the majority of which consumes fossil fuel. To avoid this, local waste treatment methods need to be developed. In this work it is investigated how treatment of one hazardous waste is done; water and sludge containing oil. Based on sustainability criteria three novel methods are presented that can be conducted locally; mycoremediation, phytoremediation and electro

Mayhew, Maxine Eleanor. "Chemical inhibitors for biomass yield reduction in activated sludge." Thesis, Cranfield University, 1999. http://dspace.lib.cranfield.ac.uk/handle/1826/4547.

Abstract:
Increasing legislation and rising treatment and disposal costs have promoted optimisation of the activated sludge process to encompass reduction of waste biomass. Manipulation of process control such as increasing sludge age and decreasing food to microorganism ratio can lower waste sludge production, but capital works as well as increased operating costs in the form of power requirement for oxygen supply may be required. The need for a cost effective method of biomass reduction without capital expenditure has prompted research into methods beyond process control. The use of chemicals capable

Abstract:
This thesis describes the development of enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) in a lab-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and the release of phosphorus during the storage and thickening of sludge produced in this reactor. In the first phase of the experimental work a fast start-up method for EBPR development was established by the addition of a pure culture of Acinetobacter lwoffi to a conventional activated sludge. Investigations revealed that the performance EBPR depended on the combination of influent COD and phosphorus values and that in the investigated range, EBPR functioned i

A field study was carried out at Ardross forest, northern Scotland where heavy metal contaminated sewage sludge had been applied to a peaty podzol at rates of 500 (low) and 1000 (high) kg N ha-1 before tree (Sitka spruce) planting. Nitrogen mineralisation rates determined by field incubation of sealed cores ranged from 3.7 to 4.5 and 7.3 to 9.4 kg N h-1 over the growing season (May to September, 1991) in soils amended with low and high rates of sludge respectively. Thomson, Sean Richard. "Methane Production by a Packed-Bed Anaerobic Digester Fed Dairy Barn Flush Water." DigitalCommons@CalPoly, 2014. https://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/theses/1329.

Full text
Abstract:
Packed-bed digesters are an alternative to covered lagoon digesters for methane production and anaerobic treatment of dilute wastewaters such as dairy barn flush water. The physical media of packed-beds retain biofilms, often allowing increased treatment rates. Previous studies have evaluated several types of media for digestion of dilute wastewaters, but cost and media fouling have setback commercial development. A major operational cost has been effluent recirculation pumping. In the present effort, a novel approach to anaerobic digestion of flush dairy water was developed at pilot-scale:

The SPO different from the natural palm oil (Crude Palm Oil, CPO) has the characteristics of:(1) Low price the premium is only half of the CPO;(2) mud-like at 25℃,the solid content was about 50%;(3) High fatty acid content (about 50 wt.%). SPO has high fatty acids, therefor it has to carry out the acid catalyzed esterification to convert of the fatty acids in SPO to biodiesel first, and then used the alkaline catalyzed to further transesterification the SPO.The relation
