Subsurface oil and surface seep samples from the Niger Delta Nigeria, Tano and Cape Three Points Basins in Ghana, and the Orcadian Basin in Scotland were analysed using an organic geochemistry approach. Source organofacies, oil thermal maturity and the effect of alteration processes were evaluated, with the aim of developing a better understanding of the origin, nature and type of petroleum present. Biomarker analyses suggested that undegraded oils are found with biodegraded oils with a range of levels of biodegradation in the Niger Delta. On the commonly used Peters and Moldowan scale of biod

In this work, I present a multi-isotopic study (carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, strontium and lead) and Re-Os geochronology in rocks and crude oils of the Sonda de Campeche Petroleum System (SCPS). Since crude oils are complicated chemical systems easily disturbed, the Re-Os isotopic system could be affected if secondary processes perturb crude oils. Therefore, the multi stable isotopic study allows the identification of the presence and grade of these secondary processes in crude oils. There are many heavy oil reservoirs with thin pay zones (less than 10 m) in the world and in Turkey. Conventional steam injection techniques are not costeffective for such reservoirs, due to excessive heat loss through the overburden. Heat losses can be minimized through controlled heating of the pay zone. One such way is to introduce heat to the reservoir in a controlled manner is microwave heating. Laboratory studies on microwave heating of a scaled model of a heavy oil reservoir with a thin pay zone are presented with an economical feasibility of the method. In this thesis, three different

Lipid wastewater may contain carcinogenic compounds that are formed mainly from cooking oils. Prolonged exposure to these compounds tends to result in increasing cancer risk in humans. In this study, a bio−treatment system was developed and evaluated to eliminate cooking fumes effectively. The results showed that (1) an efficient strain- Pseudomonas aeruginosa DS-4 capable of degrading both oil and acrylamide was isolated. The degradation

Abstract:
No<br>The analysis of armed conflict in the post Cold War era has been profoundly influenced by neoclassical economists. Statistical approaches have generated important propositions, but there is a danger when these feed into policy prescriptions. This paper first compares the economics of civil war literature with the social movement literature which has also tried to explain collective action problems. It argues that the latter has a much more sophisticated set of conceptual tools, enriched by empirical study. The paper then uses the case of multipolar militarization in oil-rich Casanare, Co

Abstract:
Oil sands companies produce substantial quantities of tailings known to contain high concentrations of dissolved organic by-products. The use of petroleum coke was proposed as a potential adsorbent for organic contaminant removal from tailings pond water. Physical activation was used to create a greater surface area and porosity within the delayed and fluid coke. Increased temperature (900oC), steam rate (0.5 mL/min), and activated time (6 h) led to high iodine numbers of 670 and 620 mg/g for activated delayed and fluid cokes, respectively. For both best activated cokes, the micropore to mesop

Abstract:
Petroleum coke-derived activated carbons were prepared and used for the adsorptive removal of a single-ring naphthenic acid (NA) from synthetic oil sands tailings pond water (TPW). The overall adsorption process was found to be intra-particle diffusion-controlled. The Weber-Morris intra-particle diffusion rate constants decreased from 7.43 to 1.23 mg/g min0.5 after activated carbon was post-oxidized with oxygen, suggesting a hindering effect of oxygen surface groups. The Freundlich model fit of the equilibrium adsorption isotherms and the small negative ΔHo pointed to a physisorption-dominated

"The Role of Taxation in Nigeria's Oil and Gas Sector Reforms - Learning from the Canadian Experience." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10388/ETD-2015-11-2282.

Abstract:
Several stakeholders in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry have emphasized the need for petroleum sector reforms in Nigeria. Canada is reputed to have one of the best oil and gas tax regimes in the world. This thesis argues that certain tax measures in Canada’s oil and gas industry have considerable potential for addressing certain industry inefficiencies in Nigeria’s petroleum sector. In developing this argument, this thesis gives an overview of oil and gas taxation in both jurisdictions and examines the possibility of transferring laws between Nigeria and Canada by exploring legal and tax compar
