The flow of particulate suspensions and brines in porous media is encountered in a wide range of industrial situations such as oil production, soil erosion, and ground water pollution and in the operation of filter beds. Three major classes of such problems are addressed in this thesis, namely particle movement, scale formation and filtration. Particle movement and scale formation are known to be serious problems in oil reservoirs where incompatible brine is brought into contact with the formation. Concerns over the environmental impact of carbon dioxide (CO2) have led to a resurgence of interest in CO2 injection (CO2I) in oil reservoirs, which can enhance oil recovery from these reservoirs and store large quantities of CO2 for a long period of time. However, CO2I lacks acceptable sweep efficiency, due to the large viscosity contrast between CO2 and resident reservoir fluids. In recent years, oil shale has attracted renewed attention as an unconventional energy resource, with vast and largely untapped reserves. Oil shale is a fine-grained sedimentary rock containing a sufficiently high content of immature organic matter from which shale oil and combustible gas can be extracted through pyrolysis. Geologic CO2 storage has been identified as key to avoiding dangerous climate change. Carbon dioxide is also injected into oil fields to enhance oil recovery (EOR). The aim of EOR is to enhance recovery by reducing the residual or remaining oil inside the pore space of reservoir rocks while the aim of carbon storage is to maximize CO2 trapping. The processes governing trapping are fundamentally rooted in the wettability or capillarity of the system. Abstract:
The last couple of decades have seen entrained-flow gasification of black liquor (BL) undergo an incremental process of technical development as an alternative to combustion in a recovery boiler. The ability of the technology to combine chemical recovery with the production of clean syngas renders it a promising candidate for the transformation of chemical pulp mills into integrated forest biorefineries. However, techno-economic assessments have shown that blending BL with the more easily transportable pyrolysis oil (PO) can not only increase the system efficiency for methanol production but r

Abstract:
The palm oil processing industry in Ghana is dominated by informal small-scale mills. However, the waste management of the informal mills have received little attention in research. The aim of this research was to determine the sources and quantity of water used, quantity and quality of wastewater produced to guide sustainable management of the wastewater. Twenty-five mills were selected for assessing the water sources and quantities, wastewater quantities and disposal practices. Wastewater samples were collected from four of the processing mills in both lean and peak production seasons for ch

Research on the electrocoagulation (EC) of hexane extractable materials (HEM) has been conducted at the University of New Orleans using a proprietary bench-scale EC reactor. The original reactor configuration forced the fluid to follow a vertical upward-downward path. An alternate electrode arrangement was introduced so that the path of flow became horizontal. Both configurations were evaluated by comparing the residence time distribution (RTD) data generated in each case. These data produced indication of internal recirculation and stagnant water when the fluid followed a vertical path. These

The rapid expansion of oil palm cultivation in Southeast Asia raises environmental concerns. Oil palm growers in Indonesia are faced with the challenge of sustaining high yields to keep pace with the growing global demand for oil and fats, while reducing the environmental impacts of oil palm cultivation. Environmental impacts associated with the deforestation at the initial phase of an oil palm plantation establishment are well documented, however the impacts of mature oil palm plantation on water quality remain poorly investigated. Oil palm is a perennial crop cultivated predominantly on wea
