Abstract:
The battle of Okinawa of 1945 was one of the bloodiest battles of the Asia Pacific War, with nearly a quarter of the Okinawan population perishing. This paper examines paintings, woodblock prints and manga that depict this battle, and through analysis of these works I show how deeply they reflect significant issues relating to Okinawan history, culture, and society, notably the struggles of its citizens and Okinawa’s social and political complexities. This paper explores several artists’ visual descriptions of the brutal and catastrophic Battle of Okinawa, particularly in terms of how their wo

This essay makes the first sustained study of the Okinawan artist Makishi Tsutomu (1941–2015) who used American Pop Art vocabularies to describe the complex realities of US-occupied Okinawa. Focusing on his 1972 installation Commemorating the Reversion to the Great Empire of Japan, the essay examines the critical ambivalence of Makishi's Political Pop as a translation strategy. Despite his critique of both American and Japanese imperialism, Makishi was aware that Okinawa was inseparably entangled in it, especially in the context of the Vietnam War, which brought violence, but also economic ben

Drawing on Françoise Lionnet and Shu-mei Shih’s notion of minor transnationalism, it argues the creative interventions of the three artists shed light on complex histories of minor transnationalism and at the same time alert us to ways in which the legacies of colonialism, migration a

This species has only been found in a cave area with heavy guano deposits, and some worker ants were observed carrying guano. The islands of Okinawa have a long history of people’s protest. Much of this has been a manifestation in one way or another of Okinawa’s enforced assimilation into Japan and their differential treatment thereafter. However, it is only in the contemporary period that we find interpretations among academic and popular writers of a collective political movement opposing marginalisation of, and discrimination against, Okinawans. This is most powerfully expressed in the idea of the three ‘waves’ of a post-war ‘Okinawan struggle’ against the US military bases. Yet, since Okinawa’s annexation to Japa

Abstract:
Since Okinawan’s integration into the Japanese nation as a prefecture in 1879, the Japanese government embarked on a program of propaganda and indoctrination to ensure loyalty in its new Okinawan subjects. As the Pacific War drew ever closer to the island of Okinawa, the Japanese government mandated that all civilians work for the war cause. The National Mobilization Act committed every resource toward supporting the war effort and every person prepared for war. Young Okinawans rallied to Japan’s cause with innocent fervor unmatched by their elders. The older population did not share the intensity of the children’s enthusiasm, but they still committed to serving the Japanese Empire as its subjects. In a practical manner, adult Okinawans prepared their families for the rough conditions that would result from a battle waged on their land. On the brink of the battle, Okinawans saw Japan as their country and felt compelled to protect it.

The author summarizes Ryukyu’s historical position in East Asia, noting how its own changes reflected the broader changes East Asian was going through. He argues that, though part of Japan today, Okinawa is still different, and he calls that difference the “its heritage from the Ryukyu Kingdom and its ‘Asian experience.’” Chinese elements in Okinawan culture, for example, are not just the result of centuries of trade and diplomatic contact, but also come from the Kingdom’s conscious effort to “sinify” in the seventeenth century. As for Okinawan’s status today, the author notes that Okinawa’s sovereignty is still seen as an open question by China.

This chapter deals with the oeuvre of Okinawan filmmaker Takamine Gō and video artist Yamashiro Chikako, with an emphasis on the former’s feature Queer Fish Lane (Hengyoro, 2016). Taking as a point of departure Gilles Deleuze’s framework of time-image, which underpins his explication of modern political cinema, this chapter examines how Takamine has experimented with textual strategies and forms of expression in configuring the ‘stratigraphic image’ apropos of Okinawa, wherein the boundaries between the actual and the virtual and between the real and the imagined are blurred. Meanwhile, I also turn to Yamashiro Chikako’s recent narrative-oriented video works that have been intricately connected to the legacies of the Battle of Okinawa and the current waves of protests against the US military bases on the islands.

This chapter sets aside discourses on race and U.S. military men to focus on corresponding discourses on sexual propriety and class respectability used to police Okinawan women's behavior. It compares the accounts of women who married during the early postwar period from those who married after reversion in 1972, reflecting Okinawa's changing economic circumstances and a reworking and reimagining of class. The stories included in the chapter demonstrate the broader and deeply personal impacts of shifting notions of class, made visible through the lenses of gender and intimate relationships. It investigates Occupation-era discourses on moral purity and contamination and discourses that prescribe respectable behaviour are most meaningful to older women. It also discusses postreversion stereotypes that reveal changing formulations of class related to processes of political and economic integration and marginalization within Japan.

Both Amami and Okinawa belong to the Northern Ryukyuan languages. They are spoken in the southwest region in Japan, and the northern part of the Ryukyu archipelago. Both languages are descended from the same ancestral language. Thus, they have many common features, e.g. glottalized consonants, agglutinative verbal morphology, and correspondence between plural/case markers and so-called animacy hierarchy. However, they also have many different features, e.g. syllable structures (i.e. “pre-syllable” in Okinawa only), verb-final affixes (i.e. the verb-final affix -n in Amami is used in relative clauses, but it is used in main clauses in Okinawa), grammatical numbers (i.e. dual number in Amami only), and degree of grammaticalization in adjectival morphology (i.e. more grammaticalized in Okinawa). You can compare several aspects of those two languages in detail in this chapter.

Mari Matsuda is a third-generation Okinawan/Japanese American progressive. In this chapter, she intertwines family history with Japanese American political, intellectual, and social history to describe the trajectory of left-wing activism in the Nikkei community. Far from the stereotype model minority, the Issei, Nisei, and Sansei radicals described here were outspoken risk takers. Matsuda uses this history to ask a question of contemporary relevance: what are the conditions under which immigrant communities will rise up in organized challenge to conditions of subordination? She considers the role of, among other things, literacy, Marx, trained organizers, strategic goals, cultural production, and multi-racial coalition in shaping three generations of progressive politics in Japanese/Okinawan-American lives.
