Abstract:
This article analyses the place of the legal procedure known as requerimiento (requirement) in the social life of late medieval Castile. Drawing on archival sources from the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, it examines how Castilians deployed the requerimiento and what meanings and functions this procedure assumed, particularly in processes of conflict-management. While much has been written about the requerimiento as a ritual of conquest in Spanish America, the place of this procedure in the legal culture of late medieval Castile has received little scholarly attention. By examining how the requerimiento operated within the world of civic disputes in Castilian villages and towns, this study brings to light a rather unknown background for the more familiar requerimiento, the colonial ritual of the sixteenth century.

Abstract:
Abstract This study explores the political and cultural context of Fr. Gonzalo de Ocaña’s translation of the Homiliarum in Ezechielem of Pope Gregory I. It sheds light on the personality of the translator, offering new information about his life. It also delves into the political circumstances in which Queen María of Castile requested this translation from her chaplain. In fact, Ocaña’s prologue to his translation provides unique historical evidence of his own personal position vis-à-vis the political strife between the Queen’s brothers and her husband, John II of Castile, a struggle that had brought Castile close to ruin. The translation of this patristic text is also important because it provides us with a literal version of extensive passages from the Book of Ezequiel and constitutes the only known translation of this book of the Old Testament made from the Vulgata in the fifteenth century. Ocaña’s use of the Latin source is by no means a trivial issue, for the only two known versions of the Book of Ezekiel translated from Latin into Spanish, the pre-Alfonsine Bible and the General estoria, were prepared much earlier, in the thirteenth century.

Abstract:
Reduce. Reuse. Recycle. We’ve all heard the mantra and likely recall it as our grade school introduction to the world of recycling. On a personal level, that meant collecting tin cans, flattening cardboard, or gathering plastic or glass receptacles. Many of these waste products return to industry and reemerge as something new and are kept out of a landfill, at least temporarily. When it comes to recycling in the oil and gas industry, many have looked at assets that have reached their end of life in one service and attempted to repurpose them for another. Offshore rigs have been sold out of the industry to become everything from early warning radar stations for the US military (see the SBX-1) to potential offshore launch pads for Elon Musk’s SpaceX program and beyond. Many offshore platforms in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) either find their way to the scrap yard or into the rigs-to-reefs program, which reuses old, fixed platform jackets as fresh ecosystems for marine life. However, something that is often talked about but rarely occurs is the reuse of an existing, but idled, production platform on a new field. This appears to be the fate of Independence Hub (IHub)—the floating centerpiece to an ambitious Anadarko Petroleum-led $2-billion deepwater GOM project that aligned several different players and various natural gas discoveries in the mid-2000s (OTC 31155). The last well at IHub ceased production in December 2015, after just 8-plus years of operation. The facility hosted produced volumes of more than 1.3 Tcf of gas, exceeding initial projections for the project by more than 30%. IHub was idled soon after and ultimately decommissioned in 2019. A New Lease on Life In May, offshore producer LLOG acquired IHub; it plans to modify the deep-draft, semisubmersible platform to develop a pair of discoveries in the Keathley Canyon area of the GOM. The reborn platform will be renamed Salamanca and will host oil and gas production from the Leon find in Keathley Canyon Blocks 642, 643, 686, and 687 and the Castile discovery (formerly Moccasin) in Block 736. As currently envisaged, two wells from Leon and one well from Castile will be tied back to the unit at its future installation site in Block 689 in 6,400 ft of water. Initial production from the joint development is expected in mid-2025. “By modifying a previously built production unit compared with constructing a new facility, we are able to reduce significantly the time and cost to bring these discoveries online,” said Philip LeJeune (according to his LinkedIn), president and chief executive of LLOG. “This development will add a significant new source of needed domestic oil and natural gas production when it comes online.”

Abstract:
Uncertainty regarding the circumstances in which devotion to the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe was established is almost as old as the devotion itself. The earliest surviving version of the legend, which recounts the adventures of the celebrated statue from the time of Gregory the Great to its discovery in the Montes de Toledo by the pastor Gil Cordero - an account dating from the late fourteenth or early fifteenth century - places its reappearance in the reign of the son of Fernando iii of Castile, ‘su fijo Don Alfonso el qual gano las Algesiras e murio sobre Gibraltar’, thus conflating Alfonso x, Fernando iii's son, who died in 1284, with Alfonso x's great-grandson Alfonso xi (1312–50). Attempts to unscramble or to disguise this confusion have a long history too, the earliest being that of the corrector of Ms AHN 48B, who expunged words and phrases and supplied marginal additions to bridge the gap between the reigns of the two Alfonsos.

Fradley, Michael George. "The old in the new : urban castle imposition in Anglo-Norman England, AD 1050-1150." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10036/3248.

Full text
Abstract:
In the aftermath of the Norman Conquest of the kingdom of England in the late eleventh century a series of castle structures were imposed on the fabric of a large number of Late Saxon towns. In the late 1980s this specific group of castles were archaeologically termed ‘urban castles’, being perceived as distinct from other forms of such structures encountered in the UK. The interpretation of these castles, whose design is widely accepted as being imported in this period from northern France, is closely entwined with culturally and nationalistically-loaded historical narrative of the Norman Conquest. This interpretive position has had a dominant role in how the urban castle is studied in historical and archaeological discourse, which in turn reinforces the validity and legitimacy of this approach. The present study will seek to question the rationale and evidence behind the present interpretive framework. This will include a historiographical analysis of the development of the study of Late Saxon and Norman England over the last century and how the conditions of research in this period has influenced and often proved divisive in how the urban castle is understood and encapsulated within perceptions of radical change in English history. In turn it will offer an alternative, interdisciplinary approach to the encounter and interpretation of the urban castle. Detailed examinations of the urban castles and settlements of Wallingford (Oxon.) and Huntingdon (Cambs.) will be followed by broader, regional studies of Sussex and the Severn Vale. The castles in these examples will be studied in the wider context of urban development across the period c.AD900-1150 which will allow them to be considered as one element amongst a hetregenous, fluid process of settlement evolution. This original methodology will be utilised to demonstrate how these sites can be used as a subject for understanding the wider phenomenon of Saxo-Norman urbanism, and that the castle is an integral, if physically distinct, element in this process.

Cooper, Kelly Lee. "Heritage Cities and the Encroaching Seas: The Preservation of Venice with Reference to Rhodes Town, Edinburgh Castle, and Old San Juan." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/93933.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the preservation challenges heritage cities face because of climate change, with Venice as a case study and references to Rhodes Town, Edinburgh Castle, and Old San Juan. Dominant literature and scholarship on Venice compete with one another, restricting opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration and dialogue in producing a more efficient preservation approach to the city. Through a study of the brief history of Venice, the materials, and past and present approaches to preservation, this research signifies the need to understand and preserve building materials. Following an analysis of the scholarship on Venice, this paper reveals the role of building materials in discourse on the city, as materials can bridge the gap among competing literature. Therefore, this thesis makes a key contribution to the understanding of urban history and preserving historic cities. In exploring preservation techniques and considering how the discourse can more effectively address the challenges of sea level rise of historic cities, this thesis argues the history of materials is key to a cohesive preservation approach for Venice's built heritage. The building materials are at the center of the preservation issue, and by serving as the core of dialogue and interdisciplinary collaboration, a more efficient approach to preserving the city's local and global heritage will occur. This thesis shows historic building materials can become central to Venice's preservation approach with increased vocal concerns about the building materials from restorers/conservators, non-governing residents, art historians, scientists, and global onlookers to Venice's local government, the Italian government, and international preservation bodies. Smith, Candice. ""Fine old castles" and "pull-me-down works" : architecture, politics, and gender in the Gothic novel of the 1790s." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2014. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=203790.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the way in which four women writers of the 1790s appropriated the architectural metaphors of the Revolution debate in their Gothic novels. By transforming the political metaphor of the Gothic building into a material environment in their writing, this thesis argues that Charlotte Smith, Ann Radcliffe, Mary Robinson, and Jane Austen staked their own variant positions in contemporary debates regarding revolution and reform. In the 1790s, the more general struggle for political and social improvement was linked by writers such as Mary Wollstonecraft to the need for reform of sexual inequality in society. By closely examining the Gothic building – typically a hostile environment for its female inhabitants – this thesis argues that the Gothic house or castle functions in these novels as a critique of domestic, as well as state, politics. Chapter one begins by exploring the synergies between architecture, politics, and the Gothic novel in the eighteenth century. In this way, this thesis contributes to a neglected yet emerging area of Gothic scholarship: the complex and symbiotic relationship between architecture and the Gothic novel. Chapter two considers the way in which Charlotte Smith exploits contemporary associations of Gothic architecture in The Old Manor House (1793) to subvert the political ideology embedded in the architectural metaphors of Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790). In chapters three and four, the architectural descriptions of Ann Radcliffe and Mary Robinson are read in dialogue with those of Edmund Burke, Hannah More, John Thelwall, and Mary Wollstonecraft: in Radcliffe and Robinson's novels, this thesis argues, the simple structure of revolutionary reform is favoured over the ancient castle of counter-revolutionary custom. Finally, chapter five challenges the critical conception of Jane Austen as a political reactionary by examining the way in which her depiction of architecture in Northanger Abbey (1817) destabilises the most perniciously gendered aspects of Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France.

It is difficult to look after both sides of historic preservation and urban development during the planning process. During this process of struggling, the decision makers tend to consider the realistic benefits as the priority which leads to the conflict between some original policies and actual needs and various critiques afterwards. Theoretically, without visionary and sustainable developmental preservation, the long-term economic benefit of urban development cannot be fulfilled. It is the direction which should be followed when implementing the strategies of historic preservation and urban development. However, in fact, the controllers tend to be influenced by current political, economic and social situations. Thus, this research will focus on urban substantial environment of historical Zuoying Old Castle and re-development strategy and explore the planned policies of related departments during the process of urban re-development. Besides, the researcher will observe the difficulties encountered when actually people execute the policies; further review the effect of urban development on historic preservation of Zuoying Old Castle and compare current studies with respect to preservation issues and proposes proper planning projects through the operation of preservation planning. Thus, this research intends to understand if historic preservation policy can protect the cultural assets defended by those preservation groups and if the economic policy-oriented urban development can allow historic preservation to become developmental mainstream or only a slogan of policy. Therefore, from the perspective of “urban development”, this research explores the weighting between historic preservation value of Zuoying Old Castle and urban development and how to balance the preservation issues brought by development. The researcher decides to proceed with the study from the following aspects: 1.Exploration, analysis and evaluation of cases in related literature 2.Changes of Zuoying Old Castle 3.Conflict and integration between historic preservation and urban development 4.Historic preservation value and urban development of Zuoying Old Castle 5.Conclusion and suggestion

Abstract:
This paper details the process of art therapy with a latency-aged boy experiencing mild to moderate adjustment difficulties and negotiating conflicts associated with the Oedipal complex. A discussion of Freud's Oedipus complex (as cited in Ellenberger, 1970) and associated theories is provided. The case study format, which includes descriptions of the client's sessions and artworks, is used to elucidate the use of art therapy in addressing developmental issues. The literature review explores potential links between Oedipal conflicts, object relations, and a related application of psychodynamic art therapy. While current literature emphasizes the use of art therapy with children facing more severe, pathological difficulties, it is contended that art therapy can provide an excellent means of addressing and supporting challenges and transitions associated with children's normative psychosexual development. It is proposed that three theoretical constructs, a Neo-Freudian approach, attachment theory, and object relations theory, may be used complimentarily to inform and enhance psychodynamic art therapy practice. Discussion of the client's therapeutic process focuses on his movement towards self-definition as he redefines his object world through creative expression and increased agency, facilitated by art therapy. His process points to the efficacy of a psychodynamic, developmentally oriented art therapy approach.

Abstract:
This chapter looks at the Infantazgo during the reign of Alfonso VIII. Beginning as early as the tenth century, the royal women of León-Castile laid claim to a little-understood share of the crown's patrimony, known as the Infantazgo. These Infantazgo properties were usually a significant source of power and income; their possession appears to be a major factor in the unusual prominence of certain women in the Leonese-Castilian monarchy. Contrary to previous assumptions, the Infantazgo did not disappear in the mid-twelfth century. It was altered, certainly, by the upheavals that attended the partition of León and Castile in 1157. But it endured, to last through the reign of Alfonso VIII and well into the reign of his grandson, Ferdinand III. Eventually, of course, the Infantazgo's significance did fade, due to the changes of the mid-thirteenth century. Ferdinand III's unification of León and Castile radically altered the kingdom's axes of power. The old domains of the Infantazgo, especially those on the Leonese-Castilian border, lost some of their strategic and economic value as a result.

Abstract:
The Castelló’s old castle (Castell Vell), or the paradigm of the anthropic territory’s occupation in La Plana until the thirteenth centuryThe Castell Vell of Castelló (Castelló’s Old Castle) is an andalusian structure located at the top on a hill, placed on northern region of La Plana, in the land of Castellón. It’s organized on three interconnected platforms, as many andalusians castles: alcazaba, albacara and the village itself. With 1,1 hectares surface, it follows the pattern of “castle associated with a rural habitat” according the Bazzana’s classification. Its conservation status advises a series of interventions, the last one dated in 2018. Defensive structures have, in general, a high homogeneity in terms of construction techniques, but different moments and build phases can be identified. Its configuration is not uncommon in the almohad military structures of the Iberian land that can be dated between the twelfth and the thirteenth centuries. The presentation at this congress of this heritage piece and the description of the last intervention made is the objective of this study.

Abstract:
In this square, an old staircase, in poor condition and with excessive slope, connected the gap between the town and the upper part of the walled enclosure. The existing staircase is replaced by building a new more convenient access, occupying a small municipal plot located next to the square. The new access comes up as if it were deposited on the natural ground, thus facilitates a more leisurely and comfortable promenade that invites to stop and sit down, join and converse. A small enclosure is built with the new walls and, on the other hand, they co-exist with what already existed. A concrete wall configures the boundaries of the square not directly showing the new entrance.

Abstract:
Integration of advanced technologies in the casting commodity through digital transformation efforts is essential to future success of rotorcraft transmission castings. This paper reviews the advanced technologies that have been integrated into the casting process for transmission housings. The transformation in casting designs, solidification modeling, mold fabrication, casting techniques, thermal and mechanical post processing, inspection, and quality management are all impacted by new technologies and driven by the continued digital thread in the manufacturing process. The casting manufacturing process is 6000 years old, but the complexity of aircraft requirements and part designs has outpaced capability of standardized casting processes. Digital transformation driven technologies create repeatable processes that reduce production scrap and development lead times.

Abstract:
This project refers to the construction of a 3D map of Thessaloniki’s historical route. The Yedi Kule Conquest – Monument Road Race took place in the old city of Thessaloniki, which was built during the Byzantine and Ottoman period. The purpose of this project is the digital recording of the castles, the monuments, the old churches, the traditional buildings, and the squares which are prime examples of the architectural beauty of the place. The methodology of the project is based on the online software Google Earth Studio and Adobe Premiere Pro. These are the tools of digitization, rendering, and building process of the animation. With this methodology, the authors achieved the documentation of land use and the architectural landscape. The animation is a credible graphic index of the historical background of Thessaloniki. The Yedi Kule area constitutes of a cultural mosaic made from different historic periods. The buildings and the neighbourhoods give the sense of transition of the narrow roads, the old Christian churches, the house of the first Turkish governor, and the byzantine castle to the modern city. In Thessaloniki, three historic periods coexist the Ancient Greek/Roman, the Byzantine, and Ottoman Empire. The responsibility of the governmental politics and of every citizen of Thessaloniki is to promote and preserve the historic background of the city. The final product offers a good opportunity for the digital storage of Thessaloniki’s old city. The animation creates an interactive environment that portrays the current image of the transition from the old to a modern city.

Abstract:
Christian adaptation of the defences of the Alcazaba of Almeria during the sixteenth centuryAfter the capitulation of the nasrid city of Almería (1489), the new Castilian administration was able to verify the state of ruin of its defences due to the earthquake of 1487, ordering the rapid construction of a castle on the highest point of the battered hispano-muslim Alcazaba. Between 1490 and 1502 the castle was built, incorporating in its design the most effective systems of the time to repel an attack with gunpowder. The typological references of this military installation correspond to the School of Valladolid; with a long tradition in the construction of castles. In parallel with the completion of these works, the Catholic Monarchs ordered in 1501 to armor the defence of the coasts of the Kingdom of Granada, articulating and extending the medieval system of watchtowers scattered along the coast, to counteract the fragility of the annexed territories, the mestizaje of its people, and the proximity of Africa. Thus concluded the works in the Castle, the works were centred in the repair of the walls of the city, action that will extend to the fences of the Alcazaba (1526). Towards 1547, attacks by turkish and berber pirates followed one another on the Almeria coast in the face of the defencelessness of the population. These incursions led to concern about the proper conservation of military installations. As a consequence of this, the old Alcazaba was adapted to the distant war offered by the use of gunpowder. The first interventions were designed by Luis de Machuca, architect of the Palace of Carlos V in the Alhambra. This accommodation included the construction of the bastions of the Campana (1550) and the repair of the doors of Justice and the Guard (1565), completing the program due to the proximity of the War with the Moriscos, with the construction of the bastions of the San Matías and Espolón (1568).

The castle of Mula (1520-2020). History of the construction of a Renaissance fortressFive hundred years after the construction of the castle of Mula, which was ordered to build the I Marqués de los Vélez, Pedro Fajardo Chacón, as a result of his expulsion from the town during the communal uprisings of the kingdom of Murcia. The fortress, a work of masonry, built on the old Andalusian citadel, has a novel construction in the southeast of the peninsular from the point of view of the multi-aesthetic. The conservation of documentation related to its construction between 1520 and 1531, allows us to approach the work of the stonecutters and master gunners.

Abstract:
The Castle of "paper". Excursus of Gallipoli’s castle presence in historical cartographyThe castle is located at the eastern part of the Gallipoli’s old town: the first data in archives and libraries started from the sixth century under the mention of castrum and in the following centuries there are many informations on parchments, written documents and bibliography published until today. The Syllabus Grecarum Membranarum from the twelfth century and the Statutum de reparatione castrorum of Frederick II are two precious sources about the primitive castle’s architecture. The structure endured the passage of the Byzantines, Normans, Swabians, Angevins and again, Aragonese, Venetians, Spaniards, Austrians and finally the Bourbons, until it became property of the State and now of the Gallipoli’s municipality. It has suffered over time numerous interventions to adapt it to new military needs: the castle was no longer effective with leading defence from new siege weapons, as for other architectures of the same period. The numerous representations preserved in Italian and European archives give a complete picture of the Gallipoli’s urban development and include the defensive system of the city: the different views illustrate the walls and allow us to understand the castle’s main evolutionary dynamics and its connection with the town.

Abstract:
From Diego de Vera to Juan Martín Zermeño: three centuries of alterations in the architecture of the old castle of Rosalcazar in Oran, AlgeriaThe ancient castle of Rosalcazar is a military architecture that is part of the Oran’s defensive system, in Algeria. His structure was built in the sixteenth century by Diego de Vera, and it reflects the approaches of the Spanish fortification of the reign of Ferdinand the Catholic. These constructions were increased with later alterations, until their consolidation during the term of the governor and engineer Juan Martín Zermeño. The architectural ensemble represented an interesting evolution of the Spanish fortification since the beginning of the sixteenth century until the middle of the eighteenth century, preserving each extension of the elements of the prior period that they are shown in the heritage ensemble of maximum interest.
