Abstract:
On August 20 of this year, the VMK-Optoelektronika company – a leading Russian developer and manufacturer of spectral analytical equipment – celebrated its 30th anniversary. The company was founded by the team of developers that initially worked in the Spektr temporary inter-institutional collaboration group created in 1988 by the Chairman of the Presidium of the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences Academician V.A. Koptyug to develop multichannel analyzers of optical spectra based on domestic photodiode arrays and operate them at the academic institutes of the Siberian Branch. Over the past period, the company has developed and produced multichannel analyzers of emission spectra (MAES) based on photodetector array assemblies to equip existing spectral instruments in analytical laboratories and create new ones; a wide range of spectrum sources; high-resolution high-aperture spectral devices; atomic emission spectrometers for the analysis of powders, metals, and liquids. Currently, enterprises in Russia and the CIS countries operate: - more than 600 spectral systems for atomic emission analysis developed on the basis of existing spectral devices by replacing photographic plates and photomultipliers with MAES analyzers; many of these systems also include Sharovaya Molniya and Vezuvii electric-arc and spark-discharge generators, Globula and Kristall spectroanalytical instruments, Potok electric-arc facilities for atomic emission analysis of powder samples by the spill-injection method, and other devices; - about 100 atomic emission spectrometers entirely consisting of devices developed by the company. The company has a leading position in the development of scintillation atomic emission spectral analysis of geological powder samples and simultaneous multielement electrothermal atomic absorption analysis of liquids.

Brock, Aske Laursen. "The company director : commerce, state and society." Thesis, University of Kent, 2017. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/60957/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis traces the social networks of company directors involved in multinational commerce during the seventeenth century. It places commerce and directors at the centre of key economic, political and social developments during the seventeenth century, answering three interrelated questions: how did relationships between different corporate spheres change during the seventeenth century? How did the director develop as a socioeconomic agent during the seventeenth century? How did directors influence the formation of the English political economy? The first chapter defines the company director and places them in the wider historiographical traditions, while also outlining the methodological approaches used throughout the thesis. Chapter two examines how debates concerning the Virginia Company affected the wider community of company directors in the first decades of the seventeenth century, demonstrating how disparities in visions for trade created friction, which in turn affected the formation of governance in other companies. The third chapter analyses how the networks of different groups of directors developed during the civil wars and Interregnum period. The tension between the varied parties drove fertile debates on company formats, which stretched existing notions of corporate governance. Following on from this, chapter four traces how directors purged and counter-purged one another in during the Restoration. New networks were shaped by private trade overseas, by new extra-company institutions and by increased competition between companies. The growing differences between the Levant Company and the East India Company inspires renewed debates over directors' role. The fifth chapter investigates how directors became familiar in England during the late seventeenth century. The joint stock boom of the 1690s gave a new presence to commercial corporate governance in England, while the links between the director community and the English state were further cemented by foundation of the Bank of England. The final chapter examines the foundation of the New East India Company in 1698, as well as the subsequent merger of the old and new companies. The new company fractured and expanded of the director community. However, the merger between the two companies ignored contemporary political ideologies, and forged the directors' networks into a corporate superstructure. The dissertation challenges the assumption that conflicts between insiders and outsiders in the commercial community accelerated the formation of the English political economy by tracing networks across a community of diverse individuals. It offers a new understanding of the relationship between commerce, politics and society in seventeenth century England, and demonstrates the importance of company directors as socioeconomic agents, emphasising the social nature of the early modern trading corporation.

Abstract:
This thesis takes up Terry Cook's idea that through their work, archivists are active shapers rather than passive keepers. In taking this idea further, this thesis discusses case studies comparing the custodial history of the records of four companies that were created in the seventeenth century. Consideration is given to how archival practitioners influenced the arrangement and description of the records of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), the English East India Company (EIC), the Royal African Company (RAC) and the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) during critical periods of their custodial history.

Abstract:
Background: Companies operate in a dynamic and challenging business environment with a constant battle to become and stay competitive and achieve sustainable growth. The business environment has transformed rapidly in the past decade due to major globalization and internationalization processes, which have created a demand for mapping and understanding business value and core competences. Parting from the traditional, the focus within companies and research is shifting from tangible assets to human capital, such as knowledge, as the primary competitive resource. Knowledge is a concept that is both complex and volatile. Knowledge emerges and develops through processes of each individual and also from individuals merging together into groups – making it hard to manage. Sadly, without proper management of such resources and processes, it is competitive advantage cannot be exerted. Nowadays, most companies can be identified as knowledge intensive firms, where competitive advantage is related to the ability to create and apply new knowledge through mergers and acquisitions. For about 3 decades, researchers, governments and companies have been trying to develop methods to evaluate and measure intangible assets, but there is a lack of research on how it is done in reality.                                                 Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate Swedish holding companies’ approach to working with intangible assets, primarily knowledge; investigating the way it is leveraged and used in the holding structure to create knowledge as a competitive resource across the entire corporation.   Method: A qualitative research is used with a sample of 10 Swedish holding companies varying in size, structure and sector in order to test a proposed integrative model formulated on theory. Purposive sampling is used for participant selection based on personal networks.   Conclusion: Firstly, we found that the majority of the Swedish holding companies do not have a method for evaluating intangible assets in general. In the event of mergers and acquisitions, on the other hand, human capital is emphasized as a main factor for decision making. From the managerial point of view, there is an elevating need for developing a systematic approach to assess human capital when acquiring new subsidiaries, primarily in order to understand the value and context of knowledge. Secondly, Swedish holding companies have internal structures and work-approaches to identify key persons within the newly acquired subsidiaries and transfer their knowledge to the mother company. Furthermore, they try to maintain and create knowledge by investing on education and leadership, but in general, knowledge management is done subconsciously. Therefore, the general finding of this research is that the concept of knowledge management is in the beginning of its lifetime and there is a clear need to put more managerial emphasis on restructuring processes.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
ENGLISH ABSTACT: The research seeks to investigate the progress of an indigenous group of companies in the advertising industry in Nigeria, in its bid to transform from unsustainable organisational practices to more sustainable and progressive practices that promote increased operational efficiency and organisational performance. The study made use of the Beehive Survey of High Performance Organisation TM and the Evolution to Excellence Framework (EEF), tools that were used by permission of the owners, The Village of Leaders Consulting, as well as interviews with staff of the company. The research objectives were firstly, to identify positive and negative influences on organisational culture change, secondly, to assist the subject company in identifying necessary steps to take in its bid to become world class and finally, to test the questionnaire model, the Beehive Survey, in an environment other than South Africa where it had been extensively used. The research further aimed to identify how far Nigerian companies had been able to achieve their bid to become truly world class with sustainable organisational practices, what type of leadership and cultural challenges they might face and what they needed to do to overcome these challenges. The major findings of the research were that indigenous companies need to reduce authoritative hierarchy and control, increase participation and interaction at all levels, increase transparency and information dissemination and clearly define the organisational vision and get the buy-in of all stakeholders.

Simson, William Ronald. "Removing Reds from the Old Red Scar: Maintaining and Industrial Peace in the East Tennessee Copper Basin from the Great War through the Second World War." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2010. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/history_diss/17.

Full text
Abstract:
This study considers industrial society and development in the East Tennessee Copper Basin from the 1890s through World War II; its main focus will be on the primary industrial concern, Tennessee Copper Company (TCC 1899), owned by the Lewisohn Group, New York. The study differs from other Appalachian scholarship in its assessment of New South industries generally overlooked. Wars and increased reliance on organic chemicals tied the basin to defense needs and agricultural advance. Locals understood the basin held expanding economic opportunities superior to those in the surrounding mountains and saw themselves as participants in the nation’s industrial and economic progress, and a vital part of its defense. The study upends earlier scholarship contending local industrial concerns acted proactively to challenges from farmers harmed by industrial pollution; investigation shows firms hesitated to initiate new production processes and manipulated local elections. Partisan developments woven amid all this underscore errors in assuming ancient regional affinity for Republicans. Confederate heritage gave Democrats an historic advantage that fractured before New Deal progressivism and expanding basin Republican power. Markets forced basin firms to merge and embrace technological change affecting working people’s relationships, forcing workers to improve skills or settle for low-skill jobs. Excepting TCC managers and supervisory staff, provincialism ruled; suspicions and competitiveness among workers grew as most miners lived a few scattered villages and most managers and craftsmen settled in the basin’s “Twin-cities” district. Early union efforts collapsed before union mismanagement, rational management and a company union based upon Sam Lewisohn’s ideals. Management managed to wrest control of its industrial relations despite the effects of Depression and the New Deal’s empowerment of workers. Workers’ infighting, reflecting neighborhood demographics and ideological differences, benefitted TCC; it convinced locals TCC could best protect industrial peace. The submissive AFL union installed fit of ownership’s nationally recognized program for industrial relations reliant on federal power. After competition crippled local industry, locals continued their reliance on government: to investigate the medical consequences of extraction work and coordinate environmental restoration. Recent regional anti-government populism makes the basin’s peculiar historic reliance on federal help engaging.

Can, Chi. "Compact and efficient method of RGB to RGBW data conversion for OLED microdisplays." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/9512.

Full text
Abstract:
Colour Electronic Information Displays (EIDs) typically consist of pixels that are made up of red, green and blue (RGB) subpixels. A recent technology, Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED), offers the potential to create a superior EID. OLED is already suitable for use in small displays and microdisplays for personal electronics products. OLED microdisplays, in particular, exhibit lower power consumption than equivalent direct-view panels thus enabling microdisplay-based personal display systems such as electronic viewfinders and video glasses to exhibit the longest possible battery life. In many EIDs, the light source is white and colour filters are used, at the expense of much absorbed light, to create the RGB light in the subpixels. Hence, the concept has recently emerged of adding a white (W) subpixel to form an RGBW pixel. The advantages can include lower power, higher luminance, and in the case of emissive displays, longer lifetime. One key to realizing the improved performance of RGBW EIDs is a suitable method of data conversion from standard RGB input signal formats to RGBW output signal formats. An OLED microdisplay built on Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor (CMOS) active matrix back-plane exhibits low power consumption. This device architecture also gives the OLED microdisplay the potential to realize the concept of low-power Display System on a Chip (DSoC). In realizing the performance potential of DSoC on an RGBW OLED microdisplay, there is a trade-off between system resources used to perform the data conversion and the image quality achieved. A compact and efficient method of RGB-to-RGBW data conversion is introduced to fit the requirement of “minimum system resources with indistinguishable visual side-effect” that is appropriate for an OLED microdisplay. In this context, the terms “Compact” and “Efficient” mean that the data conversion functionality (i) is capable of insertion into the signal path, (ii) is capable of integration on the OLED microdisplay back-plane, i.e., is small and (iii) consumes minimal power. The image quality produced by the algorithm is first simulated on a software platform, followed by an optical analysis of the output of the algorithm implemented on a real time hardware platform. The optical analysis shows good preservation of colour fidelity in the image on the microdisplay so that the proposed RGB-to-RGBW data conversion algorithm delivers sufficiently high image quality whilst remaining compact and efficient to meet the development requirements of the RGBW OLED microdisplay with DSoC approach.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Physics, 2003.
Includes bibliographical references.
This thesis comprises the results of two distinct areas of research, namely, X-ray studies of Galactic globular clusters and X-ray studies of recent core collapse supernovae. My analyses of the Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of the globular clusters NGC 6752 and NGC 6440 revealed as many low-luminosity X-ray sources as was in the entire census of globular cluster sources with the previous best X-ray imaging instrument, Rontgensatellit. In the observation of NGC 6752, I detect 6 X-ray sources within the 10':5 core radius and 13 more within the 115" half-mass radius down to a limiting luminosity of Lx = 1030 ergs s-l for cluster sources. Based on a reanalysis of archival data from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array, I make 12 optical identifications and one radio identification. Based on X-ray and optical properties of the identifications, I find 10 likely cataclysmic variables (CVs), 1-3 likely RS CVn or BY Dra systems, and 1 or 2 possible background objects. Of the 7 sources for which no optical identifications were made, one was detected in the archival radio data, and another was found to be a millisecond pulsar. Of the remaining sources, I expect that 2-4 are background objects and that the rest are either CVs or millisecond pulsars whose radio emission has not been detected. These and other Chandra results on globular clusters indicate that the dozens of CVs per cluster expected by theoretical arguments are being found. The findings to date also suggest that the ratio of CVs to other types of X-ray sources is remarkably similar in clusters of very different structural parameters.
(cont.) In the observation of NGC 6440, I detect 24 sources to a limiting luminosity of 2 x 1031 ergs s-1 (0.5-2.5 keV) inside the cluster's half-mass radius, all of which lie within 2 core radii of the cluster center. I also find excess emission in and around the core which could be due to unresolved point sources. Based upon X-ray luminosities and colors, I conclude that there are 4-5 likely quiescent low-mass X-ray binaries and that most of the other sources are cataclysmic variables. I compare these results to Chandra results from other globular clusters and find the X-ray luminosity functions differ among the clusters. Observations of the Type II-P (plateau) Supernova (SN) 1999em and Type IIn (narrow emission line) SN 1998S have enabled estimation of the profile of the SN ejecta, the structure of the circumstellar medium (CSM) established by the pre-SN stellar wind, and the nature of the shock interaction. SN 1999em is the first Type II-P detected at both X-ray and radio wavelengths. It is the least radio luminous and one of the least X-ray luminous SNe ever detected (except for the unusual and very close SN 1987A). My analysis of the Chandra X-ray data indicate non-radiative interaction of SN ejecta with a power-law density profile ... for a pre-SN wind with a low mass-loss rate of ... for a wind velocity of 10 km s-1, in agreement with radio mass-loss rate estimates. The Chandra data show an unexpected, temporary rise in the 0.4-2.0 keV X-ray flux at 100 days after explosion. My analysis of SN 1998S yielded the first X-ray spectrum of a supernova in which numerous heavy element emission features (Ne, Al, Si, S, Ar, Fe) were present ...

AbstractIn the chapter I reflect on ten months of research in Yogyakarta, Indonesia undertaken in the company of an 8/9-year-old boy as a single mother. By unpacking the shared journey, how it felt and what we had to consider, I place this social adventure and professional challenge within a feminist assessment of academic, family and parenthood institutions. I highlight the epistemic gains when recognising myself as both mother and academic. Engaging with the growing literature on fieldwork accompanied by children, I focus on the dimensions that construct the field as a parent and researcher showing what I learnt because I was accompanied by a child as part of feminist intellectual and emotional enquiry.

Abstract:
AbstractIn a business, inventory is frequently known as a source of contention. PT Petrokimia Gresik (PKG) is PT Pupuk Indonesia’s (Persero) subsidiary, an agro-industry company that the government always requires to meet national fertilizer supply to ensure food security and perform more efficient and cost-effective cost savings, through more efficient and economical use of facilities and infrastructure, including inventory management. At PKG, one of the most crucial inventory management issues is coal inventories, which have lately experienced a price increase of more than 200%. The trend of global coal prices has climbed to 2 times higher since 2021. The price of coal in Indonesia has risen from Rp. 500,000 per ton to Rp. 1,500,000 per ton, not to mention the world’s current state of war, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has increased fuel prices worldwide, including coal, which is in high demand by utility companies in Indonesia. While PT Petrokimia Gresik must continue to produce despite rising coal prices, inventory must be managed to achieve the lowest possible cost. Adopting the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) method to improve the coal inventory management system needs to be considered. EOQ is an old theory, but we believe it is still relevant today. We will compare the company’s current coal inventory management to the EOQ method regarding efficiency, efficacy, and expenses associated with reordering, storage, and other factors. The study concludes that PKG’s coal supply system is relatively good, although there is still potential for improvement. The inventory management policies that are in place still refer to the prior period’s experience. Several causes contribute to coal overstock and understock issues, including a coal supply planning system that is not yet optimal. The proposed future improvement is to employ the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) approach, which can save Rp 684,000,000 per year (average) in inventory expenditures. This demonstrates that the EOQ approach can save 6.7% per year in costs.

Full text
Abstract:
Due to capacity expansion of one of our refineries located in Western India, there was a need to evacuate additional products. Pipeline, being the most economical, reliable and environment friendly mode of transportation was the obvious choice. Laying a new pipeline would have required making substantial initial capital investment. However, a crude oil pipeline, owned by another oil company, was terminating at the refinery and was not in regular use. It was decided to convert this pipeline to product service. The pipeline was taken on lease, extensively cleaned, tested and successfully converted to product service with necessary hook-up/modifications at both the ends and in-between. The paper covers the experience gathered during the process of conversion of the crude oil pipeline to product service, including modifications carried out in the pipeline system, methodology adopted for cleaning, hydro-testing and commissioning of the system, and the lessons learnt.

Abstract:
This article is examining and determining the phenomenon of virtual cooperation in the industrial environment. Its goal is to research and find insights into whether virtual corporations are a viable alternative to classical and more traditional cooperation forms such as alliances, joint ventures and others. Virtual Enterprises (VEs) are and could be therefore a new organizational business concept to cope with actual and future challenges for companies in the globalization phases. This approach is based on merging all core competencies of a company in a network like organization. This seems to be a necessary response to deal with fast growing economies, fast changing conditions of certain markets and to become an agile reacting company in this environment.

The Advanced Course in Engineering (ACE) was started in 1923 at the Alternating Current Engineering Department of the General Electric Company by Dr. Robert E. Doherty. The purpose of this program was, and still is, to teach advanced technology, to solve real engineering problems and to learn how to write good engineering reports. The 61-year-old Advanced Course is less than half as old as the University of Cincinnati. The University of Cincinnati was founded in 1819 as Cincinnati College. In addition to its excellent research programs, the University of Cincinnati is also recognized for its leadership in cooperative education. “The academic climate was set early in this century by Dean Herman Schneider, the originator of the cooperative plan of education. The objective of that plan was to join theory and practice by linking education and industry through knowledge and experience.” The educational objectives of the University of Cincinnati (UC) and the General Electric Company (GE) have been joined through the Advanced Course in Engineering in the university’s College of Engineering.

Abstract:
This Paper describes aerodynamic silencer that is presently installed in one GT Unit in Watson Cogeneration Company, Carson, California, USA. The silencer, made from three sections, was fit into existing Intake Air Duct System (IADS) during March, 2004 Major Inspection (MI). The purpose for original silencer replacement was to reduce IA pressure drops and to minimize continuous dirt carry-over from the old silencer panels into the compressor suction. GT is very sensitive to IA pressure drops and this sensitivity is manifested in GT power output reduction. IA pressure drop reduction alone justified expenditures in replacing the old silencer by new, aerodynamic silencer. Simplified EA presented in this Paper demonstrates good profit in replacing the old silencer with the new, redesigned silencer. In addition to improvements of IA aerodynamics, silencer was designed to capture IA cooling water that did not evaporate and to drain the collected water to designated locations. This Paper also incorporates field test data results, completed by others.

Abstract:
The professionals across the Oil & Gas industry have strived to combat the adverse effects of Hydrogen Sulphide and maintain the integrity of vital facilities. The detrimental effects of Hydrogen Sulphide on process equipment has remained as one of the prime subject of research in Oil & Gas Industry, fostering the advancement of inspection philosophies and necessitating adoption of appropriate mitigating measures. The challenge of Integrity Management increases with the ageing of equipment and increased influx of sour media. This paper discusses: • The change in operating environment — from non sour to sour. • The actions taken to protect the equipment in the changed operating environment. • Consequent changes in the inspection strategies and techniques to detect material degradation. • Material protection methodologies deployed to manage the age old facilities for safe operation. This paper gives an insight into the various methodologies adopted in KOC to address asset/plant life extension issues of an operating company to tackle the challenges caused by the changed composition of fluids handled. The paper illustrates adoption of appropriate inspection strategies, application of effective internal coating systems, periodic online monitoring of the pressure vessels to improve confidence level with respect to integrity of the vessels without necessitating major changes in the facilities.

They refer to ground-breaking work from ETH Zurich in the 1970s and expand on the Swiss approach to a holistic quality management in the construction sector, which may seem “old-fashioned” in today’s price-driven market. Organizational dispositions, both on company level and within professional societies are addressed. In the context of risk and knowledge management, the revised FIDIC/EFCA guide on quality management (ISO 9001:2015) is briefly presented.

Abstract:
Abstract GTS is now almost 20 years old and has nearly 200 members from all thermal spray sectors. In this time, a great deal has been accomplished and GTS members are already using those tools GTS has made available to them and which are important for them. Here, the original idea of enhancing the quality of our technology and maintaining it at a high level continues to be an essential building block. In addition, many areas have been accessed in which an association can make more effective progress than each company on its own. With respect to issues such as further education and training, safety, environment, REACH and the compilation of guidelines, to name but a few, this idea has been successfully applied. The work of many in our organization has yielded many fruits and continues to make a difference. However, the benefits for each of us only become visible if we all actively work together. What is central to all the advantages which GTS offers is the candid discussion among its members and the opportunity for each member to quickly find his place in the group and to put these benefits to good use. The fundamental idea which GTS represents has therefore not changed in all this time: a high quality standard, cooperation, education and training, public relations all combined within the association’s guidelines and many working papers which are available to its members.

Abstract:
The paper deals with business renovation, effective utilization of information technology and the role of business process modeling in supply chain integration projects. The main idea is to show how the performance of the supply chain can be improved with the integration of various tiers in the chain. Integration is prerequisite for effective sharing and utilization of information between different companies in the chain. Simulation-based methodology for measuring the benefits combines the simulation of business processes with the simulation of supply and demand. The theoretical findings are illustrated with the case study of procurement process in a petrol company. Old and renewed business process models are shown. The changes in lead-times, process execution costs, quality of the process and inventory costs are estimated.

Abstract:
The HEC-6T 1D numerical sedimentation model was used to evaluate the long-term and system-wide sedimentation effects of modifying the operation schedule at the Old River Control Complex (ORCC). The changes evaluated were the increase and decrease of the percentages of flow diverted from the Mississippi River at the ORCC and the modification of the distributions through the four ORCC structures. Also evaluated were dredging scenarios that removed sediment from the bed of the Mississippi River at the ORCC. Sedimentation effects for several operation and dredging scenarios were compared to a Base Condition that represented the existing operation protocols. The predictive simulations extended for 50 years. The model was used to calculate and compare sand transport past various gages along the Mississippi River and in the Outflow Channel. Dredging volumes at the deep-draft crossings and in Southwest Pass and above Head of Passes were compared. Differences in water-surface profiles in the vicinity of ORCC were determined.

The predictive simulations extended for 50 years. The model was used to calculate and compare sand transport past various gages along the Atchafalaya River. Also, the model compared differences in water surface elevations and bed elevations using a specific gage analysis at several gages along the Atchafalaya River. Last, the effects of the various scenarios on annual dredging requirements in Berwick Bay were also determined.

Kudin, Roman, Prabhat Chand, and Anura Bakmeedeniya. Mitigating Nitrogen Oxides Exhaust Emissions from Petrol Vehicles by Application of a Fuel Additive. Unitec ePress, August 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.34074/rsrp.083.

Full text
Abstract:
This research has been commissioned by Eco Fuel Global Limited, a New Zealand-based company, to further evaluate the effects of their fuel-additive product on the tailpipe exhaust emissions of petrol cars. At the time this research was conducted (end of 2018), the product was still in development and had not been released to the market. Prior to the testing in this research, an initial pilot test was done for the same product on a single car (Nissan Pulsar 1998), which showed favourable results, with a reduction in hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen at the tailpipe by more than 70%. The current research included five test cars, all running on RON 95 fuel, with the years of manufacture ranging between 1994 and 2006, and the odometer readings between 112,004 km and 264,001 km. The effects of the fuel-additive product were assessed by comparing the emissions from a car running on standard fuel with the emissions from the same car after it completed a road run (250±20 km) on the additive-treated fuel. The exhaust emissions were measured using the AVL series 4000 Emission Tester, which analyses five components: carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), oxides of nitrogen (NOX), hydrocarbons (HC) and oxygen (O2). The most noticeable outcome of using the fuel-additive product was the reduction in the concentration of oxides of nitrogen in the tailpipe exhaust (by up to 27.7%), when compared with the same cars running on standard fuel. In addition, the results showed a decrease in residual oxygen concentration, which normally indicates more complete utilisation of O2 as an oxidising agent. Mitigating Nitrogen Oxides Exhaust Emissions from Petrol Vehicles by Application of a Fuel Additive Dr Roman Kudin, Prabhat Chand and Anura Bakmeedeniya 2 The changes for other emission parameters were either relatively small (below 1%) or were not statistically significant. The application of such fuel-additive products could be beneficial for mitigating nitrogen oxides exhaust emissions from petrol vehicles in countries with ageing car fleets. These include New Zealand, which has a relatively high proportion of old cars in use, with no government-run scrappage scheme, and without a mandatory objective emissions testing.

Abstract:
This report documents the bank erosion modeling performed under Task 6 (HEC-RAS Sediment Modeling) of the Old, Mississippi, Atchafalaya, and Red (OMAR) Rivers System Technical Assessment. The objectives of the bank erosion modeling effort were to compare the relative impact various flow scenarios might have on bank retreat on a stretch of the Atchafalaya River between Simmesport, LA, and the Whiskey Bay Pilot Channel. The effort included compilation of field and soil boring data, selection of bank retreat sites, creation of representative soil profiles for the reach, calibration of soil parameters to measured retreat rates, and modeling bank retreat and volume of material eroded under various flow scenarios. This modeling effort was intended for scenario comparison and should not be used as a prediction of exact rates of bank erosion. The study found that varying the amount of flow entering the Atchafalaya River from the Mississippi River could increase dramatically or significantly reduce the extent of bank erosion, relative to the current management scenario.

Malkinson, Mertyn, Irit Davidson, Moshe Kotler, and Richard L. Witter. Epidemiology of Avian Leukosis Virus-subtype J Infection in Broiler Breeder Flocks of Poultry and its Eradication from Pedigree Breeding Stock. United States Department of Agriculture, March 2003. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2003.7586459.bard.

Full text
Abstract:
Objectives 1. Establish diagnostic procedures to identify tolerant carrier birds based on a) Isolation of ALV-J from blood, b) Detection of group-specific antigen in cloacal swabs and egg albumen. Application of these procedures to broiler breeder flocks with the purpose of removing virus positive birds from the breeding program. 2. Survey the AL V-J infection status of foundation lines to estimate the feasibility of the eradication program 3. Investigate virus transmission through the embryonated egg (vertical) and between chicks in the early post-hatch period (horizontal). Establish a model for limiting horizontal spread by analyzing parameters operative in the hatchery and brooder house. 4. Compare the pathogenicity of AL V-J isolates for broiler chickens. 5. Determine whether AL V-J poses a human health hazard by examining its replication in mammalian and human cells. Revisions. The: eradication objective had to be terminated in the second year following the closing down of the Poultry Breeders Union (PBU) in Israel. This meant that their foundation flocks ceased to be available for selection. Instead, the following topics were investigated: a) Comparison of commercial breeding flocks with and without myeloid leukosis (matched controls) for viremia and serum antibody levels. b) Pathogenicity of Israeli isolates for turkey poults. c) Improvement of a diagnostic ELISA kit for measuring ALV-J antibodies Background. ALV-J, a novel subgroup of the avian leukosis virus family, was first isolated in 1988 from broiler breeders presenting myeloid leukosis (ML). The extent of its spread among commercial breeding flocks was not appreciated until the disease appeared in the USA in 1994 when it affected several major breeding companies almost simultaneously. In Israel, ML was diagnosed in 1996 and was traced to grandparent flocks imported in 1994-5, and by 1997-8, ML was present in one third of the commercial breeding flocks It was then realized that ALV-J transmission was following a similar pattern to that of other exogenous ALVs but because of its unusual genetic composition, the virus was able to establish an extended tolerant state in infected birds. Although losses from ML in affected flocks were somewhat higher than normal, both immunosuppression and depressed growth rates were encountered in affected broiler flocks and affected their profitability. Conclusions. As a result of the contraction in the number of international primary broiler breeders and exchange of male and female lines among them, ALV-J contamination of broiler breeder flocks affected the broiler industry worldwide within a short time span. The Israeli national breeding company (PBU) played out this scenario and presented us with an opportunity to apply existing information to contain the virus. This BARD project, based on the Israeli experience and with the aid of the ADOL collaborative effort, has managed to offer solutions for identifying and eliminating infected birds based on exhaustive virological and serological tests. The analysis of factors that determine the efficiency of horizontal transmission of virus in the hatchery resulted in the workable solution of raising young chicks in small groups through the brooder period. These results were made available to primary breeders as a strategy for reducing viral transmission. Based on phylogenetic analysis of selected Israeli ALV-J isolates, these could be divided into two groups that reflected the countries of origin of the grandparent stock. Implications. The availability of a simple and reliable means of screening day old chicks for vertical transmission is highly desirable in countries that rely on imported breeding stock for their broiler industry. The possibility that AL V-J may be transmitted to human consumers of broiler meat was discounted experimentally.

Abstract:
This paper evaluates the economic impact of Bpifrance’s financial programmes to support SMEs’ Research, Development and Innovation (RDI), called individual aid for innovation (IA). It focuses on the analysis of subsidies and zero-interest loans granted to SMEs over three years old during the period 2005-2018 in order to foster their RDI activity (R&D expenses and spending related to the development of innovative products, processes or services) and economic growth (turnover, employment). We use a difference-in-differences methodology combined with a propensity score matching procedure to compare supported SMEs with non-supported SMEs with same initial characteristics. This counterfactual analysis is based on a unique dataset containing both financial and non-financial information about millions of French companies. Up to 12,000 SMEs supported over the 2005-2016 period have thus been analysed, making this study the first to estimate the effect of Bpifrance’s individual aid for innovation on such a scale and using such detailed information.

Abstract:
The Sagamore Parkway Bridge consists of twin parallel bridges over the Wabash River in Lafayette, IN. The old steel-truss eastbound bridge was demolished in November 2016 and replaced by a new seven-span concrete bridge. The new bridge consists of two end-bents (bent 1 and bent 8) and six interior piers (pier 2 to pier 7) that are founded on closed-ended and open-ended driven pipe piles, respectively. During bridge construction, one of the bridge piers (pier 7) and its foundation elements were selected for instrumentation for monitoring the long-term response of the bridge to dead and live loads. The main goals of the project were (1) to compare the design bridge loads (dead and live loads) with the actual measured loads and (2) to study the transfer of the superstructure loads to the foundation and the load distribution among the piles in the group. This report presents in detail the site investigation data, the instrumentation schemes used for load and settlement measurements, and the response of the bridge pier and its foundation to dead and live loads at different stages during and after bridge construction. The measurement results include the load-settlement curves of the bridge pier and the piles supporting it, the load transferred from the bridge pier to its foundation, the bearing capacity of the pile cap, the load eccentricity, and the distribution of loads within the pier’s cross section and among the individual piles in the group. The measured dead and live loads are compared with those estimated in bridge design.
