Brock, Aske Laursen. "The company director : commerce, state and society." Thesis, University of Kent, 2017. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/60957/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis traces the social networks of company directors involved in multinational commerce during the seventeenth century. It places commerce and directors at the centre of key economic, political and social developments during the seventeenth century, answering three interrelated questions: how did relationships between different corporate spheres change during the seventeenth century? How did the director develop as a socioeconomic agent during the seventeenth century? How did directors influence the formation of the English political economy? The first chapter defines the company director and places them in the wider historiographical traditions, while also outlining the methodological approaches used throughout the thesis. Chapter two examines how debates concerning the Virginia Company affected the wider community of company directors in the first decades of the seventeenth century, demonstrating how disparities in visions for trade created friction, which in turn affected the formation of governance in other companies. The third chapter analyses how the networks of different groups of directors developed during the civil wars and Interregnum period. The tension between the varied parties drove fertile debates on company formats, which stretched existing notions of corporate governance. Following on from this, chapter four traces how directors purged and counter-purged one another in during the Restoration. New networks were shaped by private trade overseas, by new extra-company institutions and by increased competition between companies. The growing differences between the Levant Company and the East India Company inspires renewed debates over directors' role. The fifth chapter investigates how directors became familiar in England during the late seventeenth century. The joint stock boom of the 1690s gave a new presence to commercial corporate governance in England, while the links between the director community and the English state were further cemented by foundation of the Bank of England. The final chapter examines the foundation of the New East India Company in 1698, as well as the subsequent merger of the old and new companies. The new company fractured and expanded of the director community. However, the merger between the two companies ignored contemporary political ideologies, and forged the directors' networks into a corporate superstructure. The dissertation challenges the assumption that conflicts between insiders and outsiders in the commercial community accelerated the formation of the English political economy by tracing networks across a community of diverse individuals. It offers a new understanding of the relationship between commerce, politics and society in seventeenth century England, and demonstrates the importance of company directors as socioeconomic agents, emphasising the social nature of the early modern trading corporation.

Abstract:
This thesis takes up Terry Cook's idea that through their work, archivists are active shapers rather than passive keepers. In taking this idea further, this thesis discusses case studies comparing the custodial history of the records of four companies that were created in the seventeenth century. Consideration is given to how archival practitioners influenced the arrangement and description of the records of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), the English East India Company (EIC), the Royal African Company (RAC) and the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) during critical periods of their custodial history.

Abstract:
Background: Companies operate in a dynamic and challenging business environment with a constant battle to become and stay competitive and achieve sustainable growth. The business environment has transformed rapidly in the past decade due to major globalization and internationalization processes, which have created a demand for mapping and understanding business value and core competences. Parting from the traditional, the focus within companies and research is shifting from tangible assets to human capital, such as knowledge, as the primary competitive resource. Knowledge is a concept that is both complex and volatile. Knowledge emerges and develops through processes of each individual and also from individuals merging together into groups – making it hard to manage. Sadly, without proper management of such resources and processes, it is competitive advantage cannot be exerted. Nowadays, most companies can be identified as knowledge intensive firms, where competitive advantage is related to the ability to create and apply new knowledge through mergers and acquisitions. For about 3 decades, researchers, governments and companies have been trying to develop methods to evaluate and measure intangible assets, but there is a lack of research on how it is done in reality.                                                 Purpose: The purpose of the study is to investigate Swedish holding companies’ approach to working with intangible assets, primarily knowledge; investigating the way it is leveraged and used in the holding structure to create knowledge as a competitive resource across the entire corporation.   Method: A qualitative research is used with a sample of 10 Swedish holding companies varying in size, structure and sector in order to test a proposed integrative model formulated on theory. Purposive sampling is used for participant selection based on personal networks.   Conclusion: Firstly, we found that the majority of the Swedish holding companies do not have a method for evaluating intangible assets in general. In the event of mergers and acquisitions, on the other hand, human capital is emphasized as a main factor for decision making. From the managerial point of view, there is an elevating need for developing a systematic approach to assess human capital when acquiring new subsidiaries, primarily in order to understand the value and context of knowledge. Secondly, Swedish holding companies have internal structures and work-approaches to identify key persons within the newly acquired subsidiaries and transfer their knowledge to the mother company. Furthermore, they try to maintain and create knowledge by investing on education and leadership, but in general, knowledge management is done subconsciously. Therefore, the general finding of this research is that the concept of knowledge management is in the beginning of its lifetime and there is a clear need to put more managerial emphasis on restructuring processes.

ENGLISH ABSTACT: The research seeks to investigate the progress of an indigenous group of companies in the advertising industry in Nigeria, in its bid to transform from unsustainable organisational practices to more sustainable and progressive practices that promote increased operational efficiency and organisational performance. The study made use of the Beehive Survey of High Performance Organisation TM and the Evolution to Excellence Framework (EEF), tools that were used by permission of the owners, The Village of Leaders Consulting, as well as interviews with staff of the company. The research objectives were firstly, to identify positive and negative influences on organisational culture change, secondly, to assist the subject company in identifying necessary steps to take in its bid to become world class and finally, to test the questionnaire model, the Beehive Survey, in an environment other than South Africa where it had been extensively used. The research further aimed to identify how far Nigerian companies had been able to achieve their bid to become truly world class with sustainable organisational practices, what type of leadership and cultural challenges they might face and what they needed to do to overcome these challenges. The major findings of the research were that indigenous companies need to reduce authoritative hierarchy and control, increase participation and interaction at all levels, increase transparency and information dissemination and clearly define the organisational vision and get the buy-in of all stakeholders.

Simson, William Ronald. "Removing Reds from the Old Red Scar: Maintaining and Industrial Peace in the East Tennessee Copper Basin from the Great War through the Second World War." Digital Archive @ GSU, 2010. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/history_diss/17.

Full text
Abstract:
This study considers industrial society and development in the East Tennessee Copper Basin from the 1890s through World War II; its main focus will be on the primary industrial concern, Tennessee Copper Company (TCC 1899), owned by the Lewisohn Group, New York. The study differs from other Appalachian scholarship in its assessment of New South industries generally overlooked. Wars and increased reliance on organic chemicals tied the basin to defense needs and agricultural advance. Locals understood the basin held expanding economic opportunities superior to those in the surrounding mountains and saw themselves as participants in the nation’s industrial and economic progress, and a vital part of its defense. The study upends earlier scholarship contending local industrial concerns acted proactively to challenges from farmers harmed by industrial pollution; investigation shows firms hesitated to initiate new production processes and manipulated local elections. Partisan developments woven amid all this underscore errors in assuming ancient regional affinity for Republicans. Confederate heritage gave Democrats an historic advantage that fractured before New Deal progressivism and expanding basin Republican power. Markets forced basin firms to merge and embrace technological change affecting working people’s relationships, forcing workers to improve skills or settle for low-skill jobs. Excepting TCC managers and supervisory staff, provincialism ruled; suspicions and competitiveness among workers grew as most miners lived a few scattered villages and most managers and craftsmen settled in the basin’s “Twin-cities” district. Early union efforts collapsed before union mismanagement, rational management and a company union based upon Sam Lewisohn’s ideals. Management managed to wrest control of its industrial relations despite the effects of Depression and the New Deal’s empowerment of workers. Workers’ infighting, reflecting neighborhood demographics and ideological differences, benefitted TCC; it convinced locals TCC could best protect industrial peace. The submissive AFL union installed fit of ownership’s nationally recognized program for industrial relations reliant on federal power. After competition crippled local industry, locals continued their reliance on government: to investigate the medical consequences of extraction work and coordinate environmental restoration. Recent regional anti-government populism makes the basin’s peculiar historic reliance on federal help engaging.

Can, Chi. "Compact and efficient method of RGB to RGBW data conversion for OLED microdisplays." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/9512.

Full text
Abstract:
Colour Electronic Information Displays (EIDs) typically consist of pixels that are made up of red, green and blue (RGB) subpixels. A recent technology, Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED), offers the potential to create a superior EID. OLED is already suitable for use in small displays and microdisplays for personal electronics products. OLED microdisplays, in particular, exhibit lower power consumption than equivalent direct-view panels thus enabling microdisplay-based personal display systems such as electronic viewfinders and video glasses to exhibit the longest possible battery life. In many EIDs, the light source is white and colour filters are used, at the expense of much absorbed light, to create the RGB light in the subpixels. Hence, the concept has recently emerged of adding a white (W) subpixel to form an RGBW pixel. The advantages can include lower power, higher luminance, and in the case of emissive displays, longer lifetime. One key to realizing the improved performance of RGBW EIDs is a suitable method of data conversion from standard RGB input signal formats to RGBW output signal formats. An OLED microdisplay built on Complementary Metal–Oxide–Semiconductor (CMOS) active matrix back-plane exhibits low power consumption. This device architecture also gives the OLED microdisplay the potential to realize the concept of low-power Display System on a Chip (DSoC). In realizing the performance potential of DSoC on an RGBW OLED microdisplay, there is a trade-off between system resources used to perform the data conversion and the image quality achieved. A compact and efficient method of RGB-to-RGBW data conversion is introduced to fit the requirement of “minimum system resources with indistinguishable visual side-effect” that is appropriate for an OLED microdisplay. In this context, the terms “Compact” and “Efficient” mean that the data conversion functionality (i) is capable of insertion into the signal path, (ii) is capable of integration on the OLED microdisplay back-plane, i.e., is small and (iii) consumes minimal power. The image quality produced by the algorithm is first simulated on a software platform, followed by an optical analysis of the output of the algorithm implemented on a real time hardware platform. The optical analysis shows good preservation of colour fidelity in the image on the microdisplay so that the proposed RGB-to-RGBW data conversion algorithm delivers sufficiently high image quality whilst remaining compact and efficient to meet the development requirements of the RGBW OLED microdisplay with DSoC approach.

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Physics, 2003.
Includes bibliographical references.
This thesis comprises the results of two distinct areas of research, namely, X-ray studies of Galactic globular clusters and X-ray studies of recent core collapse supernovae. My analyses of the Chandra X-ray Observatory observations of the globular clusters NGC 6752 and NGC 6440 revealed as many low-luminosity X-ray sources as was in the entire census of globular cluster sources with the previous best X-ray imaging instrument, Rontgensatellit. In the observation of NGC 6752, I detect 6 X-ray sources within the 10':5 core radius and 13 more within the 115" half-mass radius down to a limiting luminosity of Lx = 1030 ergs s-l for cluster sources. Based on a reanalysis of archival data from the Hubble Space Telescope and the Australia Telescope Compact Array, I make 12 optical identifications and one radio identification. Based on X-ray and optical properties of the identifications, I find 10 likely cataclysmic variables (CVs), 1-3 likely RS CVn or BY Dra systems, and 1 or 2 possible background objects. Of the 7 sources for which no optical identifications were made, one was detected in the archival radio data, and another was found to be a millisecond pulsar. Of the remaining sources, I expect that 2-4 are background objects and that the rest are either CVs or millisecond pulsars whose radio emission has not been detected. These and other Chandra results on globular clusters indicate that the dozens of CVs per cluster expected by theoretical arguments are being found. The findings to date also suggest that the ratio of CVs to other types of X-ray sources is remarkably similar in clusters of very different structural parameters.
(cont.) In the observation of NGC 6440, I detect 24 sources to a limiting luminosity of 2 x 1031 ergs s-1 (0.5-2.5 keV) inside the cluster's half-mass radius, all of which lie within 2 core radii of the cluster center. I also find excess emission in and around the core which could be due to unresolved point sources. Based upon X-ray luminosities and colors, I conclude that there are 4-5 likely quiescent low-mass X-ray binaries and that most of the other sources are cataclysmic variables. I compare these results to Chandra results from other globular clusters and find the X-ray luminosity functions differ among the clusters. Observations of the Type II-P (plateau) Supernova (SN) 1999em and Type IIn (narrow emission line) SN 1998S have enabled estimation of the profile of the SN ejecta, the structure of the circumstellar medium (CSM) established by the pre-SN stellar wind, and the nature of the shock interaction. SN 1999em is the first Type II-P detected at both X-ray and radio wavelengths. It is the least radio luminous and one of the least X-ray luminous SNe ever detected (except for the unusual and very close SN 1987A). My analysis of the Chandra X-ray data indicate non-radiative interaction of SN ejecta with a power-law density profile ... for a pre-SN wind with a low mass-loss rate of ... for a wind velocity of 10 km s-1, in agreement with radio mass-loss rate estimates. The Chandra data show an unexpected, temporary rise in the 0.4-2.0 keV X-ray flux at 100 days after explosion. My analysis of SN 1998S yielded the first X-ray spectrum of a supernova in which numerous heavy element emission features (Ne, Al, Si, S, Ar, Fe) were present ...

"The urban environment serves many roles. It would also be such that we remember them and looking at them, feel pleasure. "[Kevin Lynch] The proposal deal with the multifunctional building near the city center. The place is located on the pass company Kras . The overall design is based on the analysis and planning studies prepared in the previous semester. The main idea is to make the function part of the city, which will primarily serve residents of the city. A place that is pleasant to meet, for recreation, relaxation and active leisure. Instead of living as well as services, commerce and administration. Instead of a vibrant life where it will be easy to navigate and enjoyable stay. The building is trying to combine the advantages of living downtown housing in the countryside. Town house should be lively. Everywhere something is happening, people stop, where to shop and spend time here. Living in the countryside provides plenty of privacy and tranquility. The proposal is currently trying to combine these advantages. The result is a house that provides plenty of features and incentives to meet and have sufficient facilities (garage). But it also offers a private area surrounded by greenery and overlooking the city features. The architectural appearance of the building seeks to reflect its main function - to provide "living"house. It also seeks a characteristic and easily remembered building in connection with quote Kevin Lynch (see above). This creates a compact three-storey compound in services and garages, which are then apartment buildings with flats of different sizes, each with a balcony or a garden that allows for contact with nature. Loggia are designed in bright colors and add vibrancy and playfulness of the building.

Abstract:
Working capital management (WCM) is an important part of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in order to generate new capital and streamline operations. The companies that consist in Sweden is to the majority SMEs, which makes it important to investigate how companies handle their capital. The purpose of the study was to analyse WCM thru CCC and WCR with company-specific, industry-specific and macro-specific factors. This was tested in an OLS model with this studies dependent variables CCC and WCR against the independent variables profitability, growth opportunities, size, cash flow and industry affiliation. The study also examined how a financial crisis affects working capital with a t2 test. This study included 4240 companies in the period 2008 to 2015, where 2008 to 2009 is described as a crisis period. The result for the study shows a positive significant correlation between CCC and cash flow, as well as a negatively significant correlation with profitability, size and industry affiliation. Furthermore, the study shows a positive significant correlation between WCR and profitability, and the size of the growth potential, cash flow and industry affiliationare negatively significant in relation to the WCR. The companies have a longer CCC and a higher WCR during crisis periods.

Over the past few decades, with the rapid economic growth in Taiwan, many enterprises have become national models for representing industrial success. All of these are attributed to the achievement of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) which mostly are established by the individual enterprise. The vitality of these SMEs has not only imperceptibly promoted the growth and the pace of innovation but also stimulated the economic development and improved the social welfare. These small but well-developed, high quality industries also create the so-called Taiwan’s Economic Miracle. However, under the impact of economic downturn and unstable external environment in recent years, each product demand life cycle and consumer preferences have been scaled down in the same proportion. In addition, the Industry Trends indicate that big enterprises have dominated the market and actualized monopoly; therefore, it is inevitably that SMEs struggle to survive the hard time, and, of course, the frozen food industry is no exception. Under such circumstances, Taiwan SMEs have to figure out how to overcome this predicament and create the existence value of their companies; therefore, they not only should persevere with their goals but also keep abreast with market opportunities for product repackaging and the establishment of reputation. In the meantime, they also have to implement their company’s core values to strive for the opportunity of their living space. This case study mainly analyzes and reviews the process of success of Chen Hsiang Foods Company, a typical SME in Taiwan. How did this seemingly small enterprise win over the trust of those prestigious brands (such as KFC, Pxmart, FamilyMart, and Hilife)? In addition, under the impact of financial crisis in 2008 and food safety incidents such as “China poison dumplings” and "melamine," the study also analyzes how these unsung heroes in this company led their employees to face challenges and grow together over the years. Their wisdom and efforts for running business are stories that Taiwan SMEs’ entrepreneurs worth to know and learn.

According to 2016 Q4 statistic data from the information platform of Ministry of the Interior, there are 3.84 millions of houses with age over 30 years in housing building category and there are approximately 86,000 buildings with 4 or 5 floors. Based on evaluation experience from earthquake assessment for public buildings, it forecasts that around 34,000 buildings are not qualified for the standard of earthquake assessment. It also forecasts that houses with age over 30 years will increase to 5.97 millions. By the end of 2036,the number of houses with age 30 years in Taiwan will reach to 7.4 millions. From above-mentioned information,urban-renewal is the popular topic in Urban Development. The study focused on the dangerous reconstruction and urban-renewal plan for unsafe or antiquated houses. First, the study provides the advantages and disadvantages of the dangerous reconstruction and urban-renewal plan, accompanying with an introduction of syndication loan, land trust with urban-renewal sector to understand the related regulations of Taiwan market. Secondly, by analyzing and discussing the problems T company case when executing the urban-renewal, we are able to understand the challenges the struggles of implementation of dangerous construction. The case study will contain the applicable regulations, the approach of raising funds for reconstruction and the type of trust applied. Dangerous reconstruction will be easier to get the approvals from the landlord and the owners of the buildings by the type of trust applied. Making trustee bank as the third party will protect the benefits of landlord and builders. It will also avoid the disputes of the transaction if there are many landlords with trust and opening the specific account to monitor the construction fund in the syndication loan will diversify the loans and credit risk from the bank and it will not be confined to the limitation of the bank act 72-2.

In recent years, the development of the old urban area in Taichung has been declining. With the transfer of the core urban area, most of the large-scale construction companies in the central region of Taiwan have also chosen newly developed areas to build houses and apartments because the land property rights in these areas are completely reserved and can be acquired easier than old urban area by construction companies. Different from most of the construction companies in Taichung, Yuan Shin Construction has been devoted to build houses and apartments in the old urban area. With the old urban area’s gradual decline for many years in Taichung, many old movies theaters suspended and stayed idle. Yuan Shin Construction has been keeping purchasing these abandoned old theaters and rebuilt them into new houses and apartments among Taichung’s building industry market. In recent years, Taichung City Government has been planning to improve the old urban area’s prosperity as well. So Yuan Shin Construction is carrying out one “Destructive Innovation” activity among construction industry market in the central Taiwan under the favorable conditions from local government’s policies. Study describes the historical background of old urban area in Taichung, and refers to the relevant data to prove this area’s decline gradually, and then quotes the Taichung City Government's proposals about old urban area’s promotion policies to explain how the government revitalizes these slack areas. Study also quotes some theories about Innovation Managements, including Sustaining Innovation and Destructive Innovation model by Clayton M. Christensen and Technology Adoption Life Cycle revision by Geoffrey Moore, who is known as the “father of high-tech marketing”. Study illustrates Yuan Shin construction’s business behaviors among market by these Innovation Managements theories. Yuan Shin Construction Co. Ltd is a brand new and small-scale company among building industry market in the central Taiwan. Under this tough environment in old urban area, can Yuan Shin Construction try to carry out “Destructive Innovation” activity with the government’s strong support to break through those large-scale construction companies’ competitions? This is Study’s main purpose. Research shows that Yuan-Sin Construction Co., Ltd has been succeeded in the strategy of the promotion in the old urban area in Taichung, and this can be identified as in the stage of the “Early majority” by The Technology Adoption Life Cycle Theory. Consumers are pragmatists in this case, what they care about most are the mixture of the price, quality, and surrounding environment of the building. Using the Revised Technology Adoption Life Cycle Theory to analyze, Yuan-Sin Construction Co., Ltd has been successful in “Crossing the Chasm”, but subject to the shortage of land in the old urban area, it’s impossible for this company to push forward to the next stage “Tornado”. This company has to keep on seeking the “Niche Market” to expand its market share and stay in the “Bowling Alley Forever”. Besides, owing to the restriction mentioned above, Yuan-Sin Construction Co., Ltd also need to explore to the new emerging districts in Taichung to reduce the risk and beware of the imitator in the building industry.

According to recent data from the World Health Organization, cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, and is responsible for an estimated 9.6 million deaths in 2018. The statistics of the 2018 national death cause published by the Ministry of Health and Welfare Statistics, cancer ranks first in the cause of death for 37 consecutive years. The number of deaths ranked first in the year, accounting for 28.2% of all deaths. With all of our advances in risk assessment, prevention, disease detection, drug development, and care delivery, why are still one out of every six people dying of cancer worldwide? One of the most likely challenges is, between 2010 and 2014, although researchers published 88,529 cancer-related papers, medical knowledge has been expanding exponentially and will double every 73 days by 2020; 42% increase in the demand for cancer care over the next 10 years and at the same time the dilemma of estimated shortage of oncologists in the coming decade, which may hamper physicians’ ability to provide optimal care. After all, keeping up with all that research and big data is next to impossible. AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology offers exciting potential and may be part of the solution. For example, while AI cannot replace trained physicians, IBM Watson for Oncology (WfO) is helping oncologists assess information from a patient’s medical record, evaluate medical evidence and find potential treatment options ranked by level of confidence and supported with clinical evidence by Memorial Soloan Kettering Cancer Center. Therefore, this thesis is based on the century-old IBM, which is utilizing smart technology to improve population health, and selects the other similar enterprises for analysis. Taiwan can unite together to fully grasp the national synergy of healthcare and health insurance valuable data; refer to the transformation strategy of IBM''s cognitive software patent leadership and as "Build to last" advised, to balance between core competency and adventure. Taiwan also can connect with international community to learn, think and suggest the possibility and vision for cross-disciplinary collaboration between healthcare and AI; promote the long-term talent cultivation of cognitive software strength and then has the chance to effectively fight the first cause of death in Taiwan, so that the people can live a healthy life with the help of smart technology.

Many builders are spending a lot of effort in the land of the new development zone because of the large scale, clear property rights, and excellent environmental atmosphere involved. However, there are also a group of small builders quietly building houses in old communities. The scale of such cases is small, but each time the old communities can be in the new light. There are many problems in terms of the development for old communities. It is difficult to sustain development by urban renewal development alone. It is still necessary to have builders kept in investing to promote the development and accelerating of renewal for old communities such as downtown areas and old townships and districts, reshaping the urban landscape anew and prevent urban expansion. The development of old communities has become an inevitable trend. The small builders must face how they can propose a land development strategy to strengthen professional strength, how they can do product positioning and planning well so that customers will be willing to pay, how they can make good use of resources, be familiar with market research, and choose the timing of pushing a case carefully, And how they can properly plan the marketing strategy of small cases in order to carry out all the sales quickly. These are issues that small builders or the initiates must take time to study.

Abstract:
The goal of a thesis in the field of Firm Valuation are, firstly, to draw valid assumptions applicable to previously studied methods that best fit the valuation of a chosen company in order to find an accurate price for its stock. Upon making so, it is also expected a comparison between the results found and the ones published by a leading investment bank, also, of one’s choice. The differences as well as similarities between methodologies and values found shall be assessed, discussed and justified. The company chosen for the latter purposes is CTT, a 495 year old company facing the new landscape of the postal market: as traditional mail becomes obsolete, Express and Parcels as well as Financial Services are boosting industry’s revenues. An analysis to past performance seems to have prepared CTT for “a change in the game”, for the company continues to yield strong EBITDA margins motivated by the cost control efficiency aligned with network optimization. The proposed price target is 10.67€ which intentions to reflect the (i) electronic substitution effect, (ii) the Portuguese economic evolution and (iii) CTT’s own internal initiatives which aim to take advantage of the latter two. Moreover it is worth referring the free-float of 100%, which guarantees high levels of liquidity in the stock market, enabling share price to growth even further.

This study examined Procter & Gamble’s attempts at the use of social media in revitalizing the Old Spice brand of products. Old Spice, which had witnessed declined sales and market share, was observed to transform and become ranked among P&G’s super brands by the conclusion of the social media campaign. Previous studies relied on the diffusion of innovations theory in the explanation of the observed phenomena. However, this project draws on the ideas of the strength of weak ties hypothesis and the diffusion of innovations theory to explain the observed process. Research findings give evidence of how new technologies like social media, have redefined how brands engage with consumers, and spread the word electronically about brand uniqueness and dominance. Findings also revealed that brands considered to be old could leverage on social media in recreating consumer awareness of the positive qualities of the product as against the retrenchment of the product line.

Abstract During the last decade, the bicycle industry stepped into fast transformation, increased application on carbon composite material, ex. frameset, handle bar…etc, the fast upgrade on derailuar system, wider range of bike specs, the huge transformation on E-bike from commuting to sport usage, the all above related change influence the requirement from the consumers. In the first years, Taiwan bicycle industry had a brilliant growth in general and offer more job opportunity, however in the recent years, due to the continuous change in brands, consumer’s reqirement and the move of manufactures, the industry is forced to adjust. The only unchanged is the non-stop change in the market and demand, D Company as one of the multinational corporation in bicycle industry, we can not ignore the change. With experienced on the fast growth in the last years, now stepped into the time on slowing down, but obviously, the D Company is still one of the market leader in wheelset segament. Therefore, it is extremely necessary to issue the middm and long term strategy to keep the company itself on the trend of the grwth. In the study, the D company face the five different challenges from internal and external, 1. Localization or central management of the company? 2. The communication between inter companies 3. The direction of product development 4. The change of the consumer’s buying 5. The competition with competitors as well as potential bike brand’s products According to the interview with top management as well as the study and experience on student, in the meantime, to combine with the theory of International Relation ship and Porter’s Five Forces Analysis, it comes the result of strategy to issue the localization strategy, more flexible product development strategy. To face the change from the way of consumer’s buying and the competition with competitors, the company need to pay the highly focus on the core competence- high quality products, improve the quality of the service and the flexibility of the supply chain, the goal is to avoid on the price competition only.

Abstract:

Residents of old age homes are at increased risk for the complications of influenza. Studies in developed countries have consistently shown that influenza vaccination of old age home residents and staff can significantly decrease morbidity and mortality rates and that influenza vaccination is one of the most cost effective interventions possible in this population. No studies have been done on the cost benefit of using influenza vaccine in old age home residents in South Africa. The aim of this study was to evaluate the costs of treating influenza and influenza-like illnesses in old age home residents, and to compare the costs in people who had received the influenza vaccine to those who had not. The study population comprised 151 people residing in two old age homes in Johannesburg, namely Sandringham Gardens and Nazareth House. The study population was divided into two groups- those who received influenza vaccine and those who had not been vaccinated. The residents of Nazareth House who gave consent had all been vaccinated. The subjects at Sandringham Gardens were sub- divided into two groups, namely: “Residents” and “Frail care / wards” section. The general health of the “Frail care” people was poorer than that of the “residents”. Medical records were reviewed, and details of the number of doctor consultations, medication and physiotherapy prescribed, special investigations performed and hospital referrals related to influenza and influenza-like infections were recorded. The costs were then calculated using “medical aid rates”. There were no significant differences in the treatment costs, comparing those who had been vaccinated to those who had not been vaccinated. There are a number of possible explanations for this. These include, most importantly, a low to moderate epidemic activity of influenza in the season that the study was conducted. Other explanations are low patient numbers, the use of symptoms for diagnosis and the use of over the counter therapy. Despite the findings in the present study, the international literature supports the view that influenza vaccination is a cost-effective intervention in the older adult population, particularly those at higher risk. These findings have been implemented in the official guidelines of many countries, including the South African Adult Influenza Vaccination Guideline.

On Board Diagnostics (OBD) is an electronic product designed for monitoring vehicle exhaust of hazardous gases and engine operation, and it also reports engine abnormal situations to vehicle driver. Knowing that the vehicle installed with OBD can effectively reduce the hazardous exhaust and traffic accidents in England, the Ministry of Communication in Taiwan decided to require all vehicles that use petrochemical fuel to have an OBD stalled. Since the safety of vehicle driver is closely related to the reliability and the quality of the OBD products, OBD product must meet their reliability test standards and conform to quality requirements. In this case, the reliability of OBD products should always be considered first. The main objective of this study is to establish a procedure to improve OBD product’s reliability and stability using failure analysis and reliability evaluation. The second generation On Board Diagnostics (OBD-II) was utilized as a case study to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The data used in this study included OBD-II FMEA data collected in the product design and manufacture stage, the failure correction and maintenance data. Through contrasting, comparing, checking and further analyzing the data using the proposed procedure, it is verified that the proposed procedure can provide an essence and effective counter-measure for fail prevention in OBD-II product design and manufacture stage, and the product reliability will thus be promoted.

The world market of Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display (TFT-LCD) panel in 2013 has exceeded US$130 Billion. Taiwan manufacturers accounted for 34%, which is the second highest. However, the performance of TFT-LCD was lower than expected in recent years. The competitive equilibrium among Japan, Korea and Taiwan has been transformed in to a new situation due to the gradual rise of the manufacturers in China. In addition OLED, a potential substitute of TFT-LCD, has developed rapidly to become a threat to the display industry. Backlight (Backlight Module) is a key component used in LCD. Since TFT-LCD is a non-self-luminous display technology, it must be coupled with a light source from the back of the display panel that projects uniform, high-brightness backlight to produce a visible image. The great potential of OLED as an emerging flat panel display technology, which is a self-luminous, flexible, and lightweight panel with wide viewing angle, high brightness, full color and other characteristics has become a big threat. The current mainstream flat panel display technology, TFT-LCD, has functional limitations such as requiring backlighting, slow response, low luminance contrast and other issues. The OLED technology compliments these deficiencies. It is considered to be the hope of next generation display technology. At the mean time, backlight module industry has continually invested in improving product design and structure to make TFT-LCD performs better. They reduce costs by using business strategies to create competitive advantages and to avoid being eliminated. This research studies the market through game theory, business strategies and key success factors by studying literatures and conducting interviews. The case company employs vertical integration to reduce production costs, and merger to acquire complementary technologies to enhance its competitiveness. In addition, interview with experts of the industry to verify the application of theory and practice, and to sum up how the backlight module industry can deal with the competition in the market. Is the OLED capable of entering large-size panel? Finally, to deduce the feasibility of applying OLED onto large-size panels. The following findings have been obtained: 1. The maturity and cost competitiveness of TFT-LCD technology are the advantages that will affect the diffusion of the emerging OLED technologies. 2. Vertical integration can improve productivity, reduce costs, and develop diversified technologies. 3. Mergers and acquisitions strategy is one of the complementary approaches to obtain OLED technologies. 4. Development of key technologies is one of the key success factors.

Singh, Inderjeet 1978. "Risk-averse periodic preventive maintenance optimization." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2011-08-4203.

Full text
Abstract:
We consider a class of periodic preventive maintenance (PM) optimization problems, for a single piece of equipment that deteriorates with time or use, and can be repaired upon failure, through corrective maintenance (CM). We develop analytical and simulation-based optimization models that seek an optimal periodic PM policy, which minimizes the sum of the expected total cost of PMs and the risk-averse cost of CMs, over a finite planning horizon. In the simulation-based models, we assume that both types of maintenance actions are imperfect, whereas our analytical models consider imperfect PMs with minimal CMs. The effectiveness of maintenance actions is modeled using age reduction factors. For a repairable unit of equipment, its virtual age, and not its calendar age, determines the associated failure rate. Therefore, two sets of parameters, one describing the effectiveness of maintenance actions, and the other that defines the underlying failure rate of a piece of equipment, are critical to our models. Under a given maintenance policy, the two sets of parameters and a virtual-age-based age-reduction model, completely define the failure process of a piece of equipment. In practice, the true failure rate, and exact quality of the maintenance actions, cannot be determined, and are often estimated from the equipment failure history. We use a Bayesian approach to parameter estimation, under which a random-walk-based Gibbs sampler provides posterior estimates for the parameters of interest. Our posterior estimates for a few datasets from the literature, are consistent with published results. Furthermore, our computational results successfully demonstrate that our Gibbs sampler is arguably the obvious choice over a general rejection sampling-based parameter estimation method, for this class of problems. We present a general simulation-based periodic PM optimization model, which uses the posterior estimates to simulate the number of operational equipment failures, under a given periodic PM policy. Optimal periodic PM policies, under the classical maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayesian estimates are obtained for a few datasets. Limitations of the ML approach are revealed for a dataset from the literature, in which the use of ML estimates of the parameters, in the maintenance optimization model, fails to capture a trivial optimal PM policy. Finally, we introduce a single-stage and a two-stage formulation of the risk-averse periodic PM optimization model, with imperfect PMs and minimal CMs. Such models apply to a class of complex equipment with many parts, operational failures of which are addressed by replacing or repairing a few parts, thereby not affecting the failure rate of the equipment under consideration. For general values of PM age reduction factors, we provide sufficient conditions to establish the convexity of the first and second moments of the number of failures, and the risk-averse expected total maintenance cost, over a finite planning horizon. For increasing Weibull rates and a general class of increasing and convex failure rates, we show that these convexity results are independent of the PM age reduction factors. In general, the optimal periodic PM policy under the single-stage model is no better than the optimal two-stage policy. But if PMs are assumed perfect, then we establish that the single-stage and the two-stage optimization models are equivalent.
