Ernest Hemingway, an American writer, produced considerable novels in the history of English literature. Hemingway’s The Oldman and the Sea is a story of an old man's struggle and his helplessness against destiny. Like Greek tragedians, Hemingway accepts the harshness of destiny in man’s life. It is very well said “Man proposes and God disposes" that denotes the role of destiny in man's life. The story of The Oldman and the Sea is universal because it reveals how human beings struggle to get something in life but sometimes crushed under the wheels of destiny. The old man has an indomitable spirit and sea experience yet he is unable to catch the fish for a few days. One day, he caught the big fish called the Marlin but it was too big for him to drag to the shore. The Old man tried to drag the Marlin to the shore but in a midway, its blood attracted the Sharks and he brought only its skeleton on the shore. So Hemingway talks about the helplessness of man against destiny through the character of an old man. This paper is a sincere effort to display man's helplessness against destiny through the character of an old man. Ernest Miller Hemingway is known as Ernest Hemingway in English literature, was an American journalist, novelist, short story writer and sportsman. Hemingway wrote seven novels during his lifetime and among them, the popular novels are The Sun Also Rises, Farewell to Arms, and The Old man and the Sea. The Old man and the Sea brought him a good name and fame in literature. Hemingway’s works mainly deal with the themes of love, war, wilderness, and loss. Farewell to Arms deals with the theme of the futility of war. In A Farewell to Arms, Hemingway says, "The world breaks everyone and afterwards many are strong in broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. Abstract:
In most of his fictional works and in the line of his previous experience as a journalist and war reporter, Ernest Hemingway developed writing techniques peculiar to him to be followed by many predecessors after him. Among the well-known techniques are the one, in which he called “the iceberg theory.” The present paper concerns itself with analyzing this literary technique used by Hemingway in “The Old Man and the Sea.” This novella, written in 1952, and awarded Nobel Prize 1954 and Pulitzer Prize 1953, achieved a great successnot only in the writer’s career but also in the world of fiction as well. Hemingway’s exceptional use of the iceberg technique renowned the novella among his masterpieces and himself as a world Avant-garde in the fictional sphere. This is due to using a simple economical language. Yet, this simple language is full of symbols, metaphors, similes, allusions, personifications, interior monologues, repetitions, soliloquies, etc. All these devices provide another cognitive approach to this story delivered in a much unsophisticated language. This unique style, though written in prose, once has their sentences broken down they may be read as poetic. The aim of this paper is to trace these elements in a novel approach to reading Hemingway’s this masterpiece.

<p><span>The Old Man And The Sea, by Ernest Hemingway, went in printing in 1952, a year later was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction. In 1954, Hemingway was given the Nobel Prize in Literature. After such a big success and a long and well accomplished career, a few years later, on a Sunday, the morning July 2nd 1961, Hemingway committed suicide. The paradox of the author’s ending with the ending of his most famous novel The Old Man And The Sea is that Ernest Hemingway, the man, gave up, whereas his character in the novel Santiago never gave up, was never defeated, emerging triumphant with the struggle against larger forces. This paradox raises the question: is The Old Man And The Sea a reflection of the author’s personal life and agony, as most commentators believe, or is it much more than that? A novel that depicts and represents the constant struggle of human kind in every era? Why was Hemingway in agony? Ernest Hemingway was a writer that belonged to the Lost Generation. One can imagine living the horrors of WWI, known as the Great War, being a personal witness in the Civil Spanish War, then WWII, living the entire adult life in and between wars. One looses hope and only dwells in the despair of loss, and agonizing in every breath. But as painful as his life was, Hemingway wrote this novel not just like a reflection of his own agony, not just as an expression of his own voice, but more than that, he portrayed the constant human struggle throughout the centuries, speaking in the voice of all humanity, past, present and future. This approach is the key what makes the novel so great. And the style and symbolism used in it make it a masterpiece therefore reading it a very thrilling experience. In this paper I will analyze the symbolism used in The Old Man And The Sea as well as make a comparison with a flow of historical and literary memory and conscience of the human kind, the world at large and of its author Ernest Hemingway. The purpose of this paper is to present an analysis on why this novel goes beyond the voice of the author. This article examines autofiction in Ernest Hemingway's writing and the entanglement between work of art, biography and psychic conflict in order to articulate science and humanism and to enhance personalized understanding of illness and creativity in artists. Following an interpretative method, the author will analyze Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea after placing this short story in its bio-bibliographic context. She will explore the following hypothesis: in this novel, Hemingway's personal conflict and his posture as a writer are disclosed under the form of allegory. Finally, the artist’s block (i.e. the absence of major publications after the publication of The Old Man and the Sea) and his suicidal act will be considered in the light of infantile traumatism and its reviviscence after the death of Hemingway’s mother.

Ernest Miller Hemingway is a representative of America’s “Lost Generation” writers. He has always been known as a tough man in the literary world, and he is a spiritual monument of the American nation. Hemingway’s works marked the formation of his unique creative style, which occupies an important position in the history of American literature and even in the history of world literature. Since its publication, The Old Man and the Sea has attracted extensive research from scholars all over the world. This article selects the patriarchal values embodied in the tough guy image in Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea as the object of study. In order to explore the profound connotations of the spirit of the tough guy in Santiago, the author will combine specific novel excerpts and use relevant background of English and American literature to explore the intrinsic relationship between the images of the tough guy patriarchal values. Hemingway created a series of tough guy images in his works, which all reflect Hemingway’s philosophy of life and moral ideals. According to patriarchal values, readers can think about the concept of gender roles and patriarchal society, so as to help us understand Hemingway’s characters better.

Annotation.This article deals with the problem of effective teaching of the story of the world-famous writer Ernest Hemingway “The Old Man and the Sea”. Due to the fact that this popular work of the writer who received the Nobel Prize is studied in the 11th grade, some teaching methods were considered for both university students and schoolchildren. All the methods used reflect the work of students in the group. First, the “fishbone diagram” method is chosen, which fully reveals the theme of the work, and its name is replaced by the skeleton of the catfish mentioned in the story. The authors of the article also emphasize the importance of using audiobooks and films in the classroom when studying Ernest Hemingway’s novella “The Old Man and the Sea”.The “FILA” method is also used, which is used when revealing the images of the heroes of the work. Using this method, a character description is created, a portrait of a young boy Manolo, the main character in Hemingway’s story “The Old Man and the Sea”. Questions that reveal the figurative personality of the hero help students to freely exchange opinions, including critical thinking. And the “6 why” method, which forms students’ critical thinking, also lends itself to systematic analysis. Here there is a rethinking of the opinions that have arisen, one’s own views are determined. The skill of the writer, who openly expressed his opinion about the title of this work by E. Hemingway “The Old Man and the Sea”, is evaluated at a high level. The huge fish that the fisherman has to pull ashore is a collective image of the entire catch that the fisherman had to catch. The main problem is self – acceptance and understanding of your needs. The fisherman constantly tries to defeat the fish and does not pay attention to the fact that it is hard for him, that the fishing line cuts his hands, that it hurts him and blood flows through his hands. He does not understand what to do in such a situation, because the creation of nature is now in a mutilated form — in his hands is an ordinary carcass of meat. The old man apologizes to the fish for what happened, he justifies himself by saying that this fish can be fed to other people.

Pengkajian dilakukan terhadap cara yang digunakan oleh masing-masing penerjemah novel tersebut, Sapardi Djoko Damono dan Yuni Kristianingsih Pramudhaningrat, untuk menangani repetisi leksikal dalam teks sumber, serta pergeseran terjemahan yang ditimbulkannya. Dalam kajian ini terungkap bahwa kedua penerjemah telah mereduksi gaya bahasa repetisi Hemingway. Reduksi menyebabkan kedua teks terjemahan mengalami pergeseran yang substansial dari teks orisinal, baik secara sintaktis maupun semantis.

Novel Lelaki Tuadan Laut by Ernest Hemingway contains many of the themes that preoccupied Hemingway as a writer and as a man. The routines of life in a Cuban fishing village are evoked in the opening pages with a characteristic economy of language. The stripped-down existence of the fisherman Santiago is crafted in a spare, elemental style that is as eloquently dismissive as a shrug of the old man’s powerful shoulders.Hemingway was famously fascinated with ideas of men proving their worth by facing and overcoming the challenges nature. Through his struggle, Santiago demonstrated the ability of the human spirit to endure hardship and suffering in order to win. It is also his deep love and knowledge of the sea, in its impassive cruelty and beneficence, that allows him to prevail. The essential physicality of the story – the smells of tar and salt and fish blood, the cramp and nausea and blind exhaustion of the old man, the terrifying death spasm of the great fish – is set against he ethereal qualities of dazzling light and water, isolation, and the swelling motion of the sea. <p><em>In modern era, problems occur continuously and it triggers stress and anxiety. This study aims to describe characterization and the anxiety of the main character in ‘The Old Man and The Sea’, a novel by Ernest Hemingway. This studybelongs to library research that applied descriptive qualitative method with psychological approach. Reading and documentation techniques were used to collect the data. To analize the anxiety of the main character, a theory on psychological anxiety by Durand and Barlow were used. Background: Ernest Hemingway was born in 1898. His first book, a collection of stories entitled In Our Time, was published in 1925. His last, for now, is the novel The Old Man and the Sea, which appeared in its entirety in Life magazine, corresponding to the September 1, 1952. Objective: This paper aims to analysis of impact of Nick Adams on society in Hero and Time in E. Hemingway’s story. Literature reviews: When Our Day was initially published in 1925, it received widespread acclaim for its simple and precise use of language to portray a broad variety of complicated emotions, establishing Hemingway as one of the most promising American authors of the time. Hemingway's literary style, which leaves nothing to chance, provides us with a colorful view of drinking. Beyond the obvious allure, he transformed it into a character and a commodity with a diverse symbolic arsenal representing friendship, masculinity, vulnerability, flight, or even self-destruction, but also an element of sensual pleasure and an invitation to a stylistic, lexical, and semantic journey. Cultural and literary factors shaped Hemingway's writing creativity. 'Mark Twain, the War, and the Bible were the key inspirations that molded Hemingway's mind and creativity,' writes Hemingway. Discussion: The main themes in this writer are death and love and, therefore, the women that he catalogs only in two groups; the castrators and the slaves of love. He was accused for many years of being a “macho” writer, due to his vision of the man-woman relationship with very defined patterns or roles and what could be called “topics”. Hemingway was also accused of being homophobic, misogynistic, and racist. Conclusion: The feeling of location in Hemingway's Nick Adams stories informs the narratives and develops the central themes of the Hemingway canon more so than any particular individual.

This article on Ernest Hemingway’s novella, The Old Man and the Sea, explores Hemingway’s worries about subjugation of non-human world due to anthropocentric hubris of human beings encroaching and exploiting nature in the modern society. In the novella, he presents the selfishness of the human world where people mercilessly go on fishing in the sea considering the act of killing fish as ‘heroic deed’. The article applies eco-critical insights to study consequences of human encroachment upon nature in the novella. It mainly borrows ideas from Paul W. Taylor’s “Respect of Nature”, Val Plumwood’s “The Blindspots of Centricism and Human Self[1]enclosure” and Arne Naess’ “Deep Ecological Movement: Some Philosophical Aspects”. The article shows Hemingway’s critique of nature exploitation and his appeal for the need of love for nature that he does through his choice of the protagonist, Santiago, and the big marlin who have a combat that Santiago wins after struggling for a long time, but gets defeated by the sharks ultimately. Hemingway, by presenting the protagonist Santiago’s situation, appeals all human beings to love nature.

The present paper aims at the careful study of some of the novels of Ernest Hemingway with a special insistence on his way of treating nature. Nature directly or indirectly plays a significant role in his creations and is much crucial aspect in the life’s of the various characters. Hemingway’s famous ‘Iceberg theory’ is also explained through an element from the nature itself. He has beautifully described the relationship of human beings with the nature around them, the environment they are a part of, the flora and fauna they are surrounded with. At places, nature becomes a prominent symbol of expression to convey various emotions. Hemingway’s way of dealing with the theme and symbols from nature is par excellence. This paper traces some of the instances where Hemingway very creatively exhibits nature and its various forms. He associates different connotations with different seasons; summer being positive and winter being the time of hopelessness. In A Farewell to Arms, rain is symbolic of pain, loss, agony, despair, and death. Destructive aspects of nature are balanced with the motherly traits of nature in the real world and in the world created by Ernest Hemingway. In Old Man and the Sea, nature is presented in its fierce and devastating form almost taking away the life of an aged fisherman; the sea, the creatures, the winds everything against him bringing unbearable hardships. On the other hand the ‘Sun’ in The Sun Also Rises, is an indicative of hope, beauty, and optimism and also signifies life. Along with that a startling contrast has been drawn between the horrifying lives people lead in modern day city to that of people living peacefully in heavenly countryside. Also people struggling with the aftermaths of war, seek shelter in the lap of nature. It is explicit here that for Hemingway, Nature is a juxtaposition of peace and violence; bringing life and death; being constructive and destructive; having angelic and ghostly attributes at the same time.

This article investigates how the literary reception of Ernest Hemingway in Iran in the first two decades after the Islamic Revolution is formed by cultural and ideological implications. The theoretical framework of this study is based on S.S. Prawer and Roger Asselineau’s notion of reception theory as a branch of study in comparative literature. The methodology entails a chronological study of translations, and cinematic adaptations of the author’s oeuvres. This study devotes itself to the study of the two most reprinted and translated works which depict a huge difference in the number of translations and reprints compared to Hemingway’s other works. As Such, the following outcomes are deliberated: besides the international fame of Hemingway, his continuing success in Iran can be related to the ideology of the translator, and the director, who deploy Hemingway’s novels as a prism to reflect Iranians’ stoic perseverance and mythical desire for freedom and fight against despotism as manifested in the legend of Jamshid. Hemingway’s code hero, undergoing stoic perseverance in hardship and war embody Iranians’ passage through a turbulent historical event after Revolution. Struggling with unemployment, war, and frustrated hopes, Iranians find Hemingway’s novels as a way to cope with arising problems during and after war. This article also explicates why reception of this particular work in Iran differs from its universal trend.

Ernest Hemingway was an American novelist and short story writer and journalist. His real name is Ernest Miller Hemingway. He is a Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer. He wrote his first articles in the school newspaper. In 1917, America was slowly joining World War I.Heminquey immediately enlisted in the army, but was not accepted because his left eye was weak. A year later, he entered the Red Crescent and volunteered to drive an ambulance. He was wounded in an explosion near the war, carrying an Italian soldier on his shoulder while he was wounded, and was wounded in the leg. After that, he was declared a hero in Italy and received the "Silver Medal of Honor". While in treatment in Milan, he fell in love with a nurse, and this love led him to write a masterpiece - "Goodbye, guns." Heminquey wrote mainly about his life experiences. This article explores the epic story of an old fisherman and his experience at the sea that portrays the physical and emotional strength of a man called Santiago and will analyse his motivation to reclaim his lost reputation and dignity of not catching a fish for 84 days. Santiago confronted each day with poise and dignity for many days without catching a fish and was made fun of by many fishermen. He was called unlucky (salao) by the fellow fishermen. Hemingway illustrates the daring resolution of the old man through this tale. The story deals with the vital issues of mortality, hope, despair, and determination, where an old fisherman fights back against a huge fish to reclaim his honour and dignity. Ernest Hemingway rejoices over this heroic man who goes through life’s challenges alone with fierce courage and tenacity, exhibiting what Hemingway views as an indestructible spirit of man at its best. In addition, Hemingway reminds us about the human spirit and the importance of human dignity in our everyday struggle for survival. Hemingway compels us to acknowledge courage, tenacity, skill, expertise, and strength through this story. He recalls a tale of valour, daring, and heroism, of one man's struggle against his own doubts and about his success and failure, and his ultimate triumph. Religion and literature share universal senses that touch human mind. The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway, a Pulitzer-award and-Nobel-prize winner, which is full of Christianity symbols and allusions, is selected to verify this universality, with three specific purposes which aimed to analyze and draw out: 1) Christian symbols and allusions, 2) universal senses of life, and 3) Buddhist essence in the novella. The analysis revealed these findings. All symbols and allusions relate to Christ. The attempt to fight against inevitable destiny that is a universal and natural order of life touches the mind. The novella implicated two cores of Buddhist essence: the four noble truths and the eightfold path. It could be concluded that the line between literature and religion share universality which lies in human mind, regardless of religious beliefs.

The Old Man and the Sea is a literature work by Ernest Hemingway. It has been translated into many languages even in Indonesian by Deera Army. Hemingway used more clause complex in producing his works. It causes problems in translation such as: translators should give more attention to the translation techniques used, readability decrease, and etc. On the other hand, Deera Army solved those problems by splitting the clause complex into shorter one. It is needed to conduct a study in how to make translation of complex clause. This study can be clearly conducted by using Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) approach. In addition, this study is aimed at: (1) describing how can be interdependency and logical semantics of complex clause in source language realized into interdependency and logical semantics of complex clause in target language of The Old Man and the Sea Novel (2) describing what translation techniques on taxis markers are used in translating from source language to target language (3) describing translation quality of clause complex translation in target language. The result of the analysis showed that there are 400 sentences which have been broken into 701 clauses. Based on the analysis, there are paratactic and hypotactic form. Paratactic took 65.30% and hypotactic, 34.50%. All of them affect translation quality. Based on the analysis, the average of accuration takes up 2.89, naturalness with 2.96 and readibility with 2.97. The writer suggests that the next researcher can conduct the same research in the deeper way.

This research aimed to analyze the character of Santiago in resolution part of the novel “The Old Man and The Sea” by Ernest Hemingway using SFL Appraisal Theory. From the data analysis, it was found that attitude (affect) and graduation (force) dominated the appraisal items in the resolution part of “The Old Man and The Sea”. In total there were 34 appraisal items found. There were 11 appraisal items on affect found (29.72%), 3 items on judgment (8.1%), 1 item on appreciation (2.7%), 5 items on engagement (13.5%) and 17 items on graduation (45.94%). Those expressions developed from character revelation through dialogue and narration on setting, and those difference marks significant importance of character’s development in the resolution part. The character revelations found in the resolution part are: reflective, affectionate (caring and loving), humble, wise, realistic, and optimistic. This research showed the contribution of appraisal theory, especially attitude and graduation to develop a character in fiction, to be more exact, vivid, and naturally convincing. In the context of language teaching, the awareness of linguistics expression, language evaluations on meanings and values are relevant to be introduced from early to get better understanding of the language.

The present research aims at conducting a critical study of the novel 'The Old Man and the Sea' written by Ernest Hemingway (1976) and its two translated versions in Persian; one rendered by Faramarzi (2006) the other by Shahin (1979). The researchers apply a comparative lexical analysis proposed by Newmark (1988) and Venuti (1995). An attempt has been made to reveal the ideology behind the original sample words and to show how translators and the effect thereof handle it. The data of this research consists of 10 ideological laden terms selected randomly among 45 words from the original text and the corresponding Persian translations. The results of this study suggest a significant difference between the two Persian translations and the original novel. It revealed that one of the translators has attempted to 'domesticate' his translation while another has been attentive to 'foreignize' it. As for implication, it seems necessary to note that translational decisions made by actual translators under different socio-cultural and ideological settings in real life and real situations should be considered. The perlocutionary consequences resulted from adoption of such decisions are of importance.

The novelty of the research lies in the fact that the concept of kut / well-being is considered in a comparative analysis of the use of this concept in these works. A comparative analysis of the concepts revealed differences and similarities in the interpretation and perception of this concept in the Kyrgyz and English cultures. The authors of the article compare various aspects of the concept of kut / well-being, such as its meanings, associations and usage examples. In the course of the study, the authors come to the conclusion that the concept of kut / well-being has similar meanings and associations in Kyrgyz and English cultures, its use may differ in different contexts. In the works of Zhusup Balasagyn and Ernest Hemingway, this concept plays an important role and helps to understand the values and cultural specifics of both peoples. The results of the study can be useful for understanding the differences and similarities between cultures, and also expands our understanding of the concept of kut / well-being in Kyrgyz and English cultures.

The result shows that the external conflict is between the old man, Santiago, and society. First, when the other fishermen and society mock the old man, Second, when the old man, Santiago, is struggling against the wild nature, the cruel sea, and the marlin and sharks, in struggling against the mockery, the old man just keeps silent and goes on fishing. The morning cold will easily make the old man sick or unable to hold out. Nonetheless, the old man is always confident in his ability to persevere. The internal conflict begins when the old man, Santiago, feels lonely; he has no wife and no children. Second, he feels disappointed and ashamed. The old man has gone fishing for 84 days, but when he goes home from fishing, he brings only the skeleton. He caught fish, but the shark is the only one. Despite his disappointment, Santiago is a man who is undefeated.

Translation, or more precisely translation studies, constitutes a very important topic nowadays and on which different theories continue to be thrown depending on the way of treatment and the importance given to the special aspects related to the translation process. Despite ongoing discussions, importance is attached to the fact that the translation should create an effect on the readers of the translated text as close as possible to that of the readers of the source text. This study aims to provide a detailed analysis based on the two versions translated into Albanian of the work The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway, namely by Ismail Kadare in 1963 and by Vedat Kokona in 1997. The methodology of this study analyzes the features and characteristics of the aspects especially the two translated versions of the original work, emphasizing the similarities as well as the changes that the translation methodology has undergone over the years. By comparing the two different periods, this study brings to light the possible transformations that take place in the translation process, as well as in this way determine the course that the translation took until a few years ago. This study allows us to observe if those features continue to be part of the translation process even today. This research consists of two linguistic corpora, one in English and one in Albanian, which makes possible the realization of this work. Due to the nature of this work, the corpus in English is the work in the original language "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway, as well as the Albanian language corpus, which constitutes the two versions of the translation of the work in the original language as well as scientific literature rich and contemporary in the service of elaborating this paper. Simile is one of the most important literary devices. It is widely used as a figure of speech in literary works. However, simile can pose significant challenges in literary translation since different languages might use and interpret similes differently. The present research aims at investigating the translation strategies employed in Arabic to render English similes in a literary text. The translation model proposed by Pierini (2007) is utilized as a framework of this study. The researcher selected "The Old Man and The Sea" novel by Ernest Hemingway and its two Arabic translations as a case study. The novel's two Arabic translations are by The United Publishers referred to later as target text 1 (TT1) and Zyad Zakaria referred to later as target text 2 (TT2). First, the researcher randomly collected 40 similes as the study data. Then, their Arabic translations are identified. Next, the data is compared and analyzed to determine their translation techniques. After analysis, the research found that literal translation is a prominent strategy in rendering English similes to Arabic.

This study aims at revealing the reflection of loyalty in Hemingway’s The Old man and the Sea. The focus of this study only on the character of Manolin, he is a learner of the old fisherman. This study is categorized as qualitative research design which is the data collected in the form of words rather than numbers. It is also used objective approach that the analysis focused only at the novel itself and the interrelationship between its internal parts of the elements. The results reveal that the character of Manolin was reflected loyalty to the old fisherman through his commitment over many challenges, his high attention to the old fisherman, and his devotion to him. It was mentioned as follows: firstly by showing his commitment over many challenges, secondly by showing high attention to Old man (Santiago), and the third showing his devotion to the old man (Santiago). The result presented here may facilitate information that Loyalty is the positive mental attitude that can be learned through the character of Manolin. It is also given to the student in English Education Department to duplicate the loyalty from Manolin because this is a positive attitude and can be used as a moral lesson.

The Old Man and the Sea is a novel that is written by the American author Ernest Hemingway, . The novel is full of religious utterances and symbols. Different translators have translated this novel into various languages. Gabrielle Wahbeh is a Christian Egyptian writer who translated this novel into Arabic. By reading the source text and the translated text, I can tell that Wahbe’s translation of the novel differs from the original text in regards to religious terms paraphrasing them. The results show that none of the Arabic idioms used in this study have equivalences in English language and so, what is shown are the paraphrased meaning for each My study will be based on the comparison and analysis of the translation including some examples from the source text into Arabic. The main aim for this study is to highlight Venuti’s translation strategy “domestication “that has been used in translating this novel into Arabic. Translation is the process of rendering a unit from one language (Source Language) into another (Target Language). When it comes to idioms (fixed expressions consisting of two words or more giving a meaning different from the meaning of the individual words), the translators are going to face a number of troubles. This study focuses on translating the Arabic idioms . The methodology of this study is based on a number of statements collected verbally or through written texts and expressing the meaning by paraphrasing them. The results show that none of the Arabic idioms used in this study have equivalences in English language and so, what is shown are the paraphrased meaning for each.

The current investigation takes up Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea and provides a corpus-based analysis by selecting monologues as data for this study. The focal point of this corpus analysis is to highlight and identify textual features in the construction of the character of Santiago. This study goes for a corpus stylistic analysis of the selected text and unravels textual features which were previously unnoticed. Only monologues are selected as corpus data and AntConc 3.5.8 (Anthony, 2010) is utilized as a tool for corpus analysis. The study displays the significant role of corpus-based approaches for a better understanding of a literary text. It is clear after this analysis, corpus-based approaches in studying Hemingway's monologues highlight linguistic features of monologues and provide new avenues and perspectives, thus enhancing the value of literary corpus stylistics.

Abstract This article examines Eileen Chang’s 1953 translation of Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea into Chinese as Cold War propaganda for the United States Information Service (USIS). It argues that this translation, meant to show the truth of democracy through its high modernist form, directly influenced the writing and translating of The Rice-Sprout Song (1955), the novel Chang wrote next for the USIS to expose the truth of famine in Communist China. I show that Chang’s translation practices connect US and Chinese literary modernisms in a showdown of literary forms and their disparate claims to the truth. Chang navigates political ideologies by eschewing linguistic equivalence to favor equivocation instead, ultimately transforming Hemingway’s modernist form via her own. It thus adds to transpacific studies and Cold War historiography by revealing the intimate relationship between political ideology and literary form, and their cross-fertilization in the process of translation.

Our article deals with the complexities of the process of reception of American fiction in the Arab world, viewed as cultural transfer, closely related with the circulation of knowledge between the Arab countries and the Western world, in which the Arabic rendering mediates between cultures by a process of interpretation and paraphrasing of the text in the sourcelanguage. We carefully consider the process of Arabization, and the strategies of domestication and foreignization as defined by Lawrence Venuti.
