Malcolm, N. "An unpublished letter from Henry Oldenburg to Johann Heinrich Rahn." Notes and Records of the Royal Society of London 58, no. 3 (September 22, 2004): 249–66. http://dx.doi.org/10.1098/rsnr.2004.0065.

Full text
Abstract:
The Swiss mathematician Johann Heinrich Rahn studied under John Pell in Zurich in the 1650s. Prompted by Pell (who worked on a revised version of Rahn's treatise on algebra, which was published in London in 1668), Theodore Haak made contact with Rahn in 1671, and received a letter from him describing his recent work on optics. This letter was passed on to Henry Oldenburg, who, with the assistance of John Collins, composed a lengthy reply, surveying recent scientific and mathematical publications. Significantly, however, Oldenburg did not consult Pell, even though this correspondence arose in the first place from Pell's friendship with Rahn; the reason for this omission was that Oldenburg and Collins hoped that Rahn could supply details of Pell's mathematical methods that Pell himself was refusing to divulge. Oldenburg's letter is published here for the first time.

Full text
Abstract:
Based on researches of Baiyao (1995) and Zhang and Xu (2001), this paper proposes an improved 2D MT Zohdy-Oldenburg direct inversion method, in the least-square sense, embodying the features of Zohdy’s ratio method and Oldenburg’s difference method, in the condition of rugged topography, with phase information. It bypasses large calculations of the Jacobian matrix and large sparse linear systems of equations and enables direct modifications and comparisons of the model parameters. According to the calculation and analysis of examples, it shows faster convergence and higher precision. In contrast with the conventional linear inversion, the calculation speed of this new method can be increased by more than 10 times.

Full text
Abstract:
Oldenburg (1974) presented an iterative inversion procedure based on (a rearrangement of) Parker’s (1973) formula for rapid calculation of the gravity anomaly caused by an uneven layer; the algorithm proved effective in practice (Sprenke and Kanasewich, 1982). Nevertheless, Oldenburg stated that straightforward application of the iterative procedure usually results in a divergent solution characterized by high‐frequency oscillations. Only in special cases (when the gravity anomaly can be accounted for by a layer with sufficiently small relief) is convergence obtained. However, Oldenburg did obtain convergence after suitable low‐pass filtering of the gravity anomaly. A criterion is derived to assure convergence of the iterative procedure. This criterion is concerned with the high‐frequency content of the layer’s topography and explains the results Oldenburg found empirically.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of the accounts of the Diary written by the Russian academician S. F. Oldenburg who was the head of the First Russian Turkestan expedition organized in East Turkistan in 1909-1910. S. F. Oldenburg’s records have not been studied enough, though they were used by few scholars earlier, one of them being N. V. Diakonova. The full text of the Diary was prepared to publication by М. D. Bukharin, the Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the author of this article in 2018 in Moscow. Despite the fact that the goal of the First Russian Turkestan expedition was to study ancient archeological sites in East Turkistan and collect manuscripts in ancient languages of East Turkistan, members of the expedition recorded valuable information on modern time and everyday life of the local population, accounts on social and economic relations in the region. The article includes preliminary analysis of the accounts of the Diary of S. F. Oldenburg and describes it as a valuable source for the study of history and culture of the Uigurs and their historical homeland – East Turkistan. The article focuses mainly on materials of the scholar relating to customs, traditions of the Uigurs, sacred Muslim sites (mazars) and folk songs (qoshaq).

Abstract:
This article examines the history, use, and significance of the Turkish Tea Garden or Cay Bahcesi, positing that these gardens offer unique democratic spaces for public discourse set within the polis. The article unpacks the historical, cultural, and symbolic features of these gardens, and the role these shared spaces play in Turkey’s multivalent civic environment. It employs Ray Oldenburg’s notion of “third space” to consider how these gardens provide inclusive settings for a culturally diverse citizenry. Furthermore, the article considers how these spaces act as repositories of shared memory, mediating conflict that appears in other societal spheres. The gardens are presented as uniquely “sacred” third spaces, distinct from the “profane” third spaces characterized by Oldenburg.

Abstract:
One of the most important sources on the history of Russian academic historical science in general and on the history of Russian Oriental studies in particular is the correspondence between the largest researchers of the history of the Near and Middle East, Academician Vasily Bartold and the permanent secretary of the IAS (RAS/AS of the USSR) in 1904–1929 Academician Sergei Oldenburg. The correspondence is kept in the St. Petersburg branch of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The documents themselves have not yet been published, and their commented introduction into scientific circulation is only expected. The documents contain detailed information on the development and implementation (both successful and unsuccessful) of research plans of these two major Russian scholars on various turns of Russian history in the late 19th – first third of the 20th century in general and Russian humanities in particular, as well as numerous details of their personal relations and relations with colleagues for more than 30 years. The letters indicate the position of Bartold and Oldenburg not only on the most important academic issues related to European Oriental studies, but also on issues of social and political importance for the fate of Russia. An important aspect of the activities of Bartold and Oldenburg was the work to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of Russia, as well as to support public education and higher education. The correspondence between Bartold and Oldenburg is the most important source for reconstructing the scientific biographies of both scholars, as well as for reconstructing the history of Russian (Soviet) science and culture of the late 19th – first third of the 20th century. A brief overview of archival documents predates the publication of all correspondence between Bartold and Oldenburg.

Abstract:
This article introduces the Chinese bookstore-café, which indicates a change of lifestyle occurring in the contemporary big cities of China. Based on the concept of “third place,” which was first introduced by sociologist Ray Oldenburg to indicate places that are neither home nor a workplace, we argue that the bookstore-café represents the emergence of a new lifestyle. Oldenburg’s “third place” concept is deployed as a framework to explore the role of the bookstore-café in Hangzhou, China, based on a study conducted at three popular bookstore-cafés in central Hangzhou, to clarify its involvement in urban life. As part of the study, we used the observational method to help determine consumers’ visual behavior and an on-site survey questionnaire to collect data for measuring the qualities of the bookstore-café. The research findings contribute profound insights into the bookstore-café in Chinese urban life and deepen our understanding of Oldenburg’s “third place” concept.

Abstract:
The article focuses on museums’ activity that reaches beyond the walls of their premises in the context of a concept of the so-called third place. The third place – as a gathering place which is neither one’s home, i.e. first place, nor workplace, i.e. second place – was described by an American sociologist Ray Oldenburg in 1999 in his book The Great Good Place: Cafes, Coffee Shops, Bookstores, Bars, Hair Salons, and Other Hangouts at the Heart of a Community. Three study cases have been used in the article: Museum Forum (project carried out by the National Museum in Kraków), Bródno Sculpture Park (project co-conducted by the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw), and the method of work implemented by the Ethnographic Museum in Kraków, including in particular the project Dzikie Planty (Wild “Planty” Park). I discuss assumptions the projects have been based on, how they fit in an overall strategy of the museums, and reasons why they have been undertaken. Finally, I wonder whether having been conducted in a fully accessible public space and conducive to users’ interaction make it justified to categorise them as the third places in the meaning given by Oldenburg. Although Oldenburg’s concept has been regarded by museum theorists as not applicable to museums, I have come to the conclusion that projects conducted by museums in a non-committal context of an open space meet the conditions the third places do.

Abstract:
The Covid-19 pandemic makes vertical housings vulnerable to mental health problems for residents. The cause of this problem is due to the small size of space, which is shrinking due to changes in urban patterns, which are not able to meet the needs of residents. The resident needs that are usually obtained outside the housing cannot be achieved due to social distancing or the lockdown. The closure of access also makes the residence must be able to become a place of work and entertainment space. As a result, the small dwellings are getting more and more cramped to live in. This problem encourages changes in new housing patterns that take into account the needs of each occupant. The use of a multidisciplinary approach by combining human psychology theory with architectural design theory is able to provide solutions in forming new residential patterns. Maslow's theory of human needs and Ray Oldenburg's theory of the Three Realms of Space form the basis of theory in designing. The design result is a residential unit module design that has all component place by Ray Oldenburg and fulfills Maslow's pyramid theory of needs. Key words: Covid-19 pandemic; Housing Pattern; Human Needs; Shrinking Space; Three Realms of Space AbstrakPandemi Covid-19 membuat hunian-hunian vertikal menjadi rentan terhadap permasalahan kesehatan mental penghuninya. Teori Maslow tentang kebutuhan manusia dan teori Ray Oldenburg tentang Three Realms of Space menjadi dasar teori dalam merancang. Hasil rancangan berupa desain modul unit hunian yang memiliki karakteristik ketiga tempat oleh Ray Oldenburg dan memenuhi teori piramida kebutuhan Maslow.

Abstract:

The first two academic periodicals were the Journal des Sçavans and the Philosophical Transactions which appeared within two months of each other in early 1665. At that time France was totally stable and centralized, while England was just emerging from a half-century of chaos. The first issue of the Philosophical Transactions included an item translated from the Journal des Sçavans. Study of these two texts shows that the English translator (Oldenburg) attempted to tidy up the French text. Analysis of the thematic structure, in comparison with a larger sample for the year 1665, shows that Oldenburg aligns his translation with his source text. Analysis of the process types shows that the percentages of process types are similar for the two texts, with the exception of verbal process. This seems to indicate a desire on the part of Oldenburg the attribute the discourse to someone else. These two texts are of particular importance as the first example of the translation of an academic article.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this research study is to extend the concept of third places, as explained by Oldenburg (2000), as being places designed as meeting places and as being dynamic rather than static. Design/methodology/approach – The primary site for this paper is a neighborhood ritual of shared meals that has taken place every Wednesday for the past fourteen years. This was a 6 month study focusing on semi-structured interviews. Findings – Characteristics of third places when compared to other arguments for the classification of third place supports the use of space instead of the purpose of a place as the main consideration for the classification of “third place”. Research limitations/implications – Defining social events within homes as third spaces pushes the traditional third place theory forward. It offers a way for rituals to be explored more deeply through the experiences they offer. Practical implications – This study asks the reader to pay attention to the periphery where interaction takes place and consider how we frame concepts of third places. Social implications – Third places create an environment that allows individuals expressions of restraint (to keep the distance between yourself and others), relaxation (to be yourself), freedom (from judgment), reflexivity (when you look back at past events) and vulnerability (opening yourself up to the possibilities that come from interacting with others). Originality/value – The distinction of third place is not so much in the categorization of the building but rather in the use for which the space serves. Extending these conversations into future research endeavors would be to continue and to extend the discussion/description of third places.

Abstract:
In the book "The Great Good Place" written by Ray Oldenburg in 1990. In this book Oldenburg divides the place, where humans live their daily lives, into three namely first place, second place, and third place. First place according to Oldenburg is home, second place is a place to work, and third place is a place to relax (hangout) and socialize. For urban communities who are generally individualistic, third place becomes a kind of necessity, where in those places they have the opportunity to enjoy social relations with other people in a relaxed atmosphere. Site Location located in Puri Indah Area, including CBD (Central Business District) where many work employees who face work tasks that make it stressful. So the purpose of the project is to build a place of relaxation for employees and visitors of the lippo mall to take the time to relax Relaxing, boredom and fatigue and also as a counter-activity subsistence. Field survey results and environmental footprint analysis results. The project entitled "Recreation Places in the Puri Indah Area" / "Recreation Place At Puri Indah" has a building programmatic program, namely: 1) Trampoline Arena 2) Public Market. 3) Food Hall. Trampoline arena provide fun recreational activities with the concept of Tetris Where Activities follow Form.2) public market where public places are open which activities Buy and sell, socializing activities between sellers and buyers. 3) food hall provides open seating where employees can work in a discussion in the food hall. Abstrak Pada Dalam buku “The Great Good Place” yang ditulis oleh Ray Oldenburg pada tahun 1990.

Abstract:
Abstract The grand-ducal gallery of Oldenburg is a forgotten collection today, though once it enjoyed international fame. In less than a century, the dukes of Oldenburg in Lower Saxony collected an exemplary gallery of Old Masters that attracted the attention and the praise of international connoisseurs and art historians like Wilhelm Bode, Abraham Bredius and Tancred Borenius. Then, after the end of the First World War, the collection fell apart. In 1919, it was disassembled and its masterpieces were sold, once again generating international attention, this time from art dealers, museums and collectors eager to have their share of the plunder. The protests over this sell-out added impetus to the passing of a Kulturgutschutzgesetz, the first German law aimed at the protection of works of art of national value. This article reviews the history of the gallery and presents the results of a recent research project.
