The morphology of oligotrich ciliates is similar to that of Halteria sp. (Order Halteriida), hence they are grouped into the same suborder by morphologists, but however, oligotrich and choreotrich ciliates (Order Choreotrichida) are closely related according to the genetic analysis. The microbial food web therefore plays an essential role for transferring the energy from …. to the traditional food chain. Generally, it was mainly controlled by Kuroshio Current except a specific period of southwestern seasonal monsoon when Taiwan Strait Current intrudes from the northern side. The variation in the spatial and temporal distributions of oligotrich ciliate community in the Ilan Bay was investigated in 7 cruises on board the R/V Ocean Research II between April 5004 and November 2005. The mean depth-averaged abundance of oligotrich ciliate ranged from 2.1× 104 to 18.6 × 104 cells m-3

Abstract:
The nature and extent of microbial biodiversity remain controversial with persistent debates over patterns of distributions (i.e. cosmopolitanism vs. endemism) and the processes that structure these patterns (neutrality vs. selection). I used culture-independent approaches to address these issues focusing on two groups of ciliates, the Oligotrichia (Spirotrichea) and Choreotrichea (Spirotrichea). To assess the diversity of these ciliates, I designed primers specific to SSU rDNA of ciliates within these clades, and investigated (1) geographic and temporal distributions along three coastal sites

Planktonic ciliates consume small phytoplankton and can be important in the transfer of carbon through food webs. This study examined the impact of clonal ciliate populations on short term algal blooms. Numerical and functional responses (growth and grazing rates with varied food concentration)were established for 5 marine planktonic ciliates and were used in a model to examine predator-prey dynamics of ciliates and 8 Am algae.
