ABSTRACT In France, the shoreline Oil Spill Contingency Plan (plan Polmar) is the responsibility of the terrestrial prefect who represents the prime minister. To improve the information currently contained in such a document, CEDRE proposed that the government create an operational atlas outlining the main features of French coastal waters and the shoreline. As a first step, one particular segment along the English Channel (from Omaha Beach to Mont St.-Michel) was chosen, with a coastline of about 250 km. The characteristics taken into account were gathered into three main categories: physical

The heat exchanger consists of a 7 m long coil of flexible plastic tubing (OD, 10.0 mm, ID, 8.0 mm). By perfusing the tubing with thermostatically controlled water, heat can be added to or subtracted from the body core at rates equalling several times resting heat production. Abstract Lead environmental health stems from white lead paints and lead and lead-silver mining. Towns (including Galena, IL; Potosi, MO; Herculaneum, MO; Viburnum Trend, MO; Tri-State Lead District, MO; Joplin, MO; Picher, OK; Midvale, UT; Kellogg, ID; and Leadville, CO) that were exuberantly born from mining rushes will be seen to die a long and painful death. The remediation of these towns is complicated by competing political boundaries and potentially responsible parties (mining companies: St. Joe, Doe Run Lead Co., National Lead Co., ASARCO, Picher Lead, and Zinc Co.). This chapter examines the growth of sprawling suburbs and exurbs around the Middle West's largest cities. Housing developments on the outskirts of Wichita, Omaha, St. Louis, and a few other cities became increasingly common during World War II and in the 1950s as the farm population declined. As the farm population dwindled, people fleeing the region entirely or gravitating to Dallas and Houston (where new jobs were more abundant) became a more likely scenario. The chapter explains how this reshuffling led to the emptying of farms and small towns and also to the rise of new centers of populati

Abstract The conventional gurneys used in hospitals to move patients from room to room have one main disadvantage: they are difficult to control. A typical gurney has a form of an oblong table moving on four castor wheels. The vehicle is difficult to maneuver, especially on corridor turns, and usually requires two operators — each at one end. Dr. J. Bleicher from the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska suggested a new type of a self-propelled gurney which would be a cross-breed of a motorized wheelchair and a gurney. A new type of a gurney would have two additional wheels in the center of
