I identify and examine the grounds on which we describe an agent's non-doing as an omission to do X, and a cause of Y. I distinguish between the formal and material aspects of an omission. This is useful in setting aside obvious differences between actions and omissions, which some writers take to be significant, in particular the view that an omission can be identified with whatever action an agent performs or movement he makes when he omits to X. <p>This study examined if social distance, i.e. in- vs. out-group membership, had an effect on moral judgments of acts vs. omissions. 164 participants judged the morality of acts vs. omissions of lethal harm, that affected an in- vs. out-group member of the participant, in order to save five other people. Omission errors made by 186 older adults were compared to those of 96 younger adults on a nonverbal delayed recall task, the Wechsler Memory Scale - Revised Visual Reproduction II subtest (WMS - R VR 2, Wechsler, 1987). Acoustic analyses have recently been brought to bear on the phonological error pattern of final consonant omission. The results from such acoustic analyses have generally supported the correctness of the phonological analyses. The purpose of this report is to present seemingly conflicting results from a generative phonological analysis and an acoustic analysis of one misarticulating child who omitted word-final obstruents. Across four experiments, we show that when people can serve their self-interest, they are more likely to refrain from reporting the truth ( lie of omission) than actively lie ( lie of commission). We developed a novel online "Heads or Tails" task in which participants can lie to win a monetary prize.
