Abstract:
Service Emergence Paradigm (SEP), based on a pervasive computing approach, consists of providing services to users within intended applications, transparently from their intentions, relatively to their needs, and regardless of the time and devices used. This considered paradigm has been proved sufficiently in applications that have context awareness schemes and various working threads. This research focuses on two aspects for providing SEP services. This first aspect is to implement a Physiological Pedestrian Dead Reckoning Approach (PPDR) that corrects position errors in pedestrian dead reckoning systems based on the heart rate parameter. This approach uses specific stochastic models that rely on probability distributions of previously collected heart rate values with respect to their velocities of a user during a treadmill walk. The reason behind this collection is to form a pattern that contributes in adjusting currently read velocities in any future PDR system. The second aspect of this research is the Social Relationship Detection framework (SRD). This approach proposes a mean for exploring the level of relationship between people by observing the network connection pattern of each person over several conditions. These connections, with respect to each condition, are consolidated to form a set that holds different probability distributions. These distributions are formed based on the users’ Wireless Access Point (WAP) connection establishment routine. Afterwards, the distributions of the probabilities are fed into a trained back propagation neural network to detect the level of relationship between candidate users for forthcoming friendship recommendations. This approach is elaborated in a technique that achieves intelligent decision-making whenever the connection pattern to the WAP and the user behavior are changing with time. It is also distinguished from other classical approaches that rely solely on prior knowledge of the convergence of the users’ attributes

Abstract:
This dissertation posits a new model for understanding media audiences, bringing the scholarship of game studies to the critical analysis of audience practices. The concept of play proves beneficial for understanding the complex processes of media audiences, as they are able to traverse dichotomous categories when engaging media content. The genre of professional wrestling proves a perfect case study for examining these playful audience practices, and this study is an ethnographic account of the practices of wrestling fans. Focusing on the behaviors of fans at live wrestling events, in online contexts, and in the subcultural setting of a card game entitled Champions of the Galaxy, this study demonstrates the necessity of the concept of play for understanding what media audiences do when they engage media content. These practices, however, are always negotiated by the hegemonic power of the rules that structure how audiences are encouraged to engage content, resulting in ideological constraints on the possibilities play offers.

Abstract:
Considering a scenario where the technologic devices that visually register the world acquire omnipresence in everyday life, journalism is in a period of readjustment of its narrative strategies and its modus operandi. This research intents to investigate the changes in TV journalism because of the ubiquity of cameras, which capture images produced both by the media and by external institutions, since they offer to the journalistic enterprises an inexhaustible and irresistible material, because it is surrounded by an expectation of authenticity. We propose then a categorization of these machines, which are systematized as omniscient and omnipresent cameras, for the purpose of understanding the specificity of the phenomenon. In common, all of these cameras point to the search for a realistic aesthetics, based on the recognition of a low media interference. Thus, it is observed that the TV stations use some strategies to adapt these contents in their narratives, which bring to the media something that would previously be restrict to the backstage area. In a sense, they operate as a symptom o the erosion of the boundaries between public and private. With this methodological course, we finally attempt to understand how these technologic devices are used to achieve effects of realism to journalism.

Abstract:
Abstract Corrosion by wet ammonium chloride salt is a significant concern in many refining process units. Because corrosion rates typically experienced can be extremely high when all of the conducive conditions are met, every attempt is made to prevent this corrosion from occurring. This includes process design, corrosion resistant materials, and source control of chlorides. However, despite the best effort by the industry, ammonium chloride continues to pose a serious threat to the integrity of refining equipment and the process safety of refineries because the omnipresence of chlorides in a refinery. This paper presents a recent effort to further minimize this threat. It includes advances in the fundamental understanding of ammonium chloride salt behavior, predictive modeling effort based upon such fundamentals, the integration of such models with process and operating conditions in real-time, and guidance for inspection in search of this highly elusive corrosion phenomenon.

Abstract:
Vibration and noise are omnipresent in a helicopter environment and therefore their reduction is an important goal in helicopter research. Actuators embedded into the skin of a helicopter rotor blade can produce a twist, which influences the propagation of the air turbulence. Hence, vibration and noise levels can be significantly reduced. An important issue during operation of a rotor blade are the centrifugal loads which affect the actuators and can cause a failure. Based on the German Aerospace Center (DLR) project STAR(Smart Twisting Active Rotor), the design of an active twist rotor blade has been adapted, such that the loads in the actuator system can be significantly reduced and furthermore distributed evenly. Besides a new actuator design, described in an earlier study of the authors, this paper focus on the use of carbon fiber composite for the spar and additional straps near to the trailing edge. This increases the durability of a new generation of active twist rotor blades, which is the basis for a specific and efficient use of the active twist technology. A first prototype of the new designed rotor blade has already been built. The design changes are addressed in this paper as well as the manufacturing process. Finally results of the numerical model are validated experimentally in the whirl tower and blade properties of the prototype blade are presented.

Abstract:
One hundred years after the death and one hundred and forty years after the birth of the famous Czech writer Jaroslav Hašek (1883–1923), his work still attracts the undivided attention and curiosity of readers. His widely known literary work about the immortal soldier Josef Švejk, which has been translated into many languages, has acquired the dimension of omnipresence and timelessness – precisely in the sense that it can be read in any country and at any time. However, the majority of the writer's prose work consists of short stories, adventures and tales, often published first in newspapers and then in book form, often linked by a common theme that they deal with. Many of them preceded the writing of the novel about the good soldier Švejk, and some of them explain Hašek's political thinking and the constant need to question things, make fun of them and take nothing for granted. Hašek's constant involvement in public social life can be traced in the stories collected in anthological collections – Galerie karikatur (1909), Velitelem města Bugulmy (1921), Mírová konference a jiné humoresky (1922), Dobrý voják Švejk před válkou a jiné podivné historky (1922), as well as in the posthumously published anthology – Politické a sociální dějiny strany mírného pokroku v mezích zákona (1963). Our intention in this contribution was to highlight selected parodies and political satire in the short form of a story, with reference to the parallel between Dickens' heroes from The Pickwick Papers and Hašek's satire – Klub českých Pickwicků.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This co-authored paper centres the Māori cultural practice of tangi, both as a way to heal and to be heard, for four new and emerging Māori community health researchers involved in a Kaupapa Māori research mentorship. If research mentorships are about growing research capability and capacity, we highlight here that another important ‘c’ comes first – confidence. For over 20 years, Kaupapa Māori theory and research have carved out critically important space for Māori to research ‘as Māori’ in academia, yet omnipresent colonialism continues to cast doubts on the validity of our voices as researchers, and our ‘worthiness’ or ability to step confidently into research space. Here, four emerging Māori researchers who are committed to making research-informed health changes in our communities share how our confidence to ‘do’ research grew during a summer Kaupapa Māori research mentorship. We each experience the emotion of tangi – be it a bird’s call or weeping – in different ways. Therefore, rather than offer advice on ‘how to become confident as an emerging Kaupapa Māori researcher’, this co-authored paper encourages you to hear, and importantly feel, these stories about ‘becoming’ and to consider how research must do better to create more Kaupapa Māori-led opportunities for Māori to confidently step into research with, and for, their communities.

Abstract:
This program focused on citrus tristeza virus (CTV), the largest and one of the most complex RNA-plant-viruses. The economic importance of this virus to the US and Israeli citrus industries, its uniqueness among RNA viruses and the possibility to tame the virus and eventually turn it into a useful tool for the protection and genetic improvement of citrus trees justify these continued efforts. Although the overall goal of this project was to study the role(s) of CTV associated defective (d)-RNAs in CTV-induced diseases, considerable research efforts had to be devoted to the engineering of the helper virus which provides the machinery to allow dRNA replication. Considerable progress was made through three main lines of complementary studies. For the first time, the generation of an engineered CTV genetic system that is capable of infecting citrus plants with in vitro modified virus was achieved. Considering that this RNA virus consists of a 20 kb genome, much larger than any other previously developed similar genetic system, completing this goal was an extremely difficult task that was accomplished by the effective collaboration and complementarity of both partners. Other full-length genomic CTV isolates were sequenced and populations examined, resulting in a new level of understanding of population complexities and dynamics in the US and Israel. In addition, this project has now considerably advanced our understanding and ability to manipulate dRNAs, a new class of genetic elements of closteroviruses, which were first found in the Israeli VT isolate and later shown to be omnipresent in CTV populations. We have characterized additional natural dRNAs and have shown that production of subgenomic mRNAs can be involved in the generation of dRNAs. We have molecularly cloned natural dRNAs and directly inoculated citrus plants with 35S-cDNA constructs and have shown that specific dRNAs are correlated with specific disease symptoms. Systems to examine dRNA replication in protoplasts were developed and the requirements for dRNA replication were defined. Several artificial dRNAs that replicate efficiently with a helper virus were created from infectious full-genomic cDNAs. Elements that allow the specific replication of dRNAs by heterologous helper viruses also were defined. The T36-derived dRNAs were replicated efficiently by a range of different wild CTV isolates and hybrid dRNAs with heterologous termini are efficiently replicated with T36 as helper. In addition we found: 1) All CTV genes except of the p6 gene product from the conserved signature block of the Closteroviridae are obligate for assembly, infectivity, and serial protoplast passage; 2) The p20 protein is a major component of the amorphous inclusion bodies of infected cells; and 3) Novel 5'-Co-terminal RNAs in CTV infected cells were characterized. These results have considerably advanced our basic understanding of the molecular biology of CTV and CTV-dRNAs and form the platform for the future manipulation of this complicated virus. As a result of these developments, the way is now open to turn constructs of this viral plant pathogen into new tools for protecting citrus against severe CTV terms and development of virus-based expression vectors for other citrus improvement needs. In conclusion, this research program has accomplished two main interconnected missions, the collection of basic information on the molecular and biological characteristics of the virus and its associated dRNAs toward development of management strategies against severe diseases caused by the virus and building of novel research tools to improve citrus varieties. Reaching these goals will allow us to advance this project to a new phase of turning the virus from a pathogen to an ally.
