Abstract:
Abstract Background Continuous education of clinicians improves quality of care. One Minute Wonder (OMW) summarize best practice knowledge on one page that can be hung on a wall and can be read during waiting times of just one minute. OMW are a fast, efficient and easy-to-adapt educational method and can easily be shared. Since 2018, an interprofessional network has been set up for OMW in German-speaking countries, but the benefits have not been evaluated yet. Aim The primary objective of this evaluation study was to examine whether and to what extent the members of the OMW network used OMW for training in different settings. Secondary objectives were subjective educational gain, OMW as a training method, and OMW-related structures and processes. Methods An online survey within the OMW network with 301 members over a period of 3 weeks in 2020 was conducted. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. Results Response rate was 62.8% (n = 191). Most participants have used OMW for < 6 months (32.5%, n = 62), developed 1–10 OMW (42.4%, n = 81) by themselves and changed them infrequently (43.5%, n = 74). Topics were most often nursing interventions (79.6%, n = 152), diseases (71.2%, n = 136), drugs (64.4%, n = 123) and others. Participants reported that OMW extended professional knowledge, stimulated them to reflect on their work and are useful for sharing best practice knowledge. Authors of OMW were most often nurses (53.9%, n = 103), who were inspired by the OMW network or by questions of the team. Conclusion Participants use OMW in practice to share best practice knowledge.

Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this work is to evaluate the degree of degradation phenolic compounds in olive mill wastewater (OMW), using crude plant peroxidases. In fact, OMW was treated with crude peroxidases extracted from radish (Raphanus sativus L.) and nettle (Urtica urens L.) leaves. A significant reduction of more than 60% of total phenols was observed in OMW incubated with peroxidase crude extract during seven days. The present chromatographic data obtained by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) show that enzymatic treatment may change the composition of the polyphenols contained in the OMW. Thus, we observed a significant decrease in some phenolic acid levels, such as gallic acid, p-coumaric acid and hydroxytyrosol, and the disappearance of vanillic acid, compared to the non-treated OMW. Finally, phytotoxicity of the treated and non-treated OMW was tested by means of young sunflower plants (Helianthus annuus) grown in hydroponic medium. Our results showed that sunflower plants grow normally when the nutrient medium contains treated OMW; whereas they fade rapidly in the presence of non-treated OMW. We conclude that treatment of OMW with radish and nettle crude extracts could attenuate OMW phytotoxicity considerably.

Abstract:
Verticillium wilt caused by the soil-borne fungus Verticillium dahliae causes severe losses to a broad range of economically important crops worldwide. Chemical disease management is ineffective; thus, alternative control strategies are needed. Olive-producing countries face the challenge of managing olive mill wastewater (OMW) in an environmentally friendly and agronomically beneficial manner. The proper use of OMW supported by scientific research has been proposed as a valuable means for successful disease management. In this respect, we tested whether soil application of raw OMW can protect vegetable crops against V. dahliae and investigated the potential disease-suppressive mechanisms. OMW inhibited significantly fungal growth, sporulation, hyphae width, and conidial and microsclerotial germination in vitro, and these effects were dose-dependent. Moreover, the addition of OMW in the soil provided sufficient protection of eggplant and tomato against V. dahliae in planta. The high OMW-conferred protection of eggplant was gradually decreased, possibly due to the decreased phenolic content in OMW over time. Bioassays with sterilized soil substrate and OMW, along with isolated microbial strains, revealed that soil- and OMW-originated microbes had no role in disease suppression. Moreover, split-root set-ups suggested a non-systemic OMW-induced resistance mechanism. Root-drench application of OMW in eggplant and tomato plants did not cause significant alterations in the structure of the plant microbiome that could be associated with disease suppressiveness.

Abstract:
Olive mill wastewater (OMW), a major by-product of the olive oil production industry, is rich in polyphenolic compounds that impart health benefits to several animals. Here, we evaluated the effects of OMW addition on the nutrients, quality, and bacterial composition of fermented total mixed ration (TMR). Different amounts of OMW (0%, 5%, 10%, and 20% in fresh matter) as a substitute for water were mixed with the formulated TMR and fermented for 4 weeks. At the initial stages of fermentation, OMW significantly altered the dry matter, pH, and lactic acid content; however, it had minor effects on most macronutrients, quality parameters, and bacterial flora in the final TMR product. OMW (10%) supplementation improved the polyphenolic compound content in the fermented TMR. However, OMW (10% and 20%) increased lipid levels beyond the recommended level of 3% in cow diets. OMW supplementation did not affect the microbial composition of TMR, except for an increased abundance of Weissella. These findings suggest that supplementation of 5–10% OMW improves the quality parameters of TMR without affecting the nutrient composition of fermented TMR. OMW can be used in cow feed; however, further studies involving feeding trials are needed to validate the effects of OMW on cows.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Disposal of untreated olive-mill wastewater (OMW) is a major environmental problem in many Mediterranean countries. This study assessed the impact of OMW application on soil microbiological properties and explored the relationship to soil chemical properties during a 9-month, periodical soil-sampling campaign in a pilot study area in Crete, South Greece. Cases studied involved: direct application of OMW on soil; OMW disposal in active evaporation ponds; sites hosting evaporation ponds that have been inactive for the past 9 years; sites downstream of active evaporation ponds; and control soils, upstream of the waste-disposal ponds. Long-term OMW disposal on land affected the main soil chemical properties. Applicability of the results from the systematic monitoring was confirmed by results obtained in other OMW disposal sites around the pilot area. Soil microbial properties (microbial activity, microbial biomass carbon, and metabolic quotient) were considerably affected by OMW disposal. Moreover, seasonal changes of soil properties revealed short- and long-term residual effects due to OMW disposal. Significant correlations were observed among soil microbial characteristics and soil chemical properties, clearly indicating a close relationship between chemical properties and the transformation of microbial communities in soil after OMW land spreading. The determination of a key set of chemical and microbiological parameters that can be used as indicators for monitoring soil quality at olive-mill waste-disposal areas will verify the efficiency of the techniques used for the land disposal of OMW and will consequently promote their sustainable management.

Abstract:
The possibility of coupling a physicochemical pretreatment (ozonation) with a biological treatment (anaerobic digestion) was investigated for the case of olive mill wastewaters (OMW). Batch ozonation experiments were performed in a glass bubble reactor. The parameters which were tested included the ozone concentration in the inlet gas stream, the reactor temperature and the composition of the liquid medium in terms of raw or fractionated OMW used. In the sequel, ozone-pretreated OMW samples were tested for their biochemical methane potential (BMP) under mesophilic conditions and these results were compared to the BMP of untreated OMW. The ozonation process alone resulted in a 57–76% decrease of total phenols and a 5–18% decrease of total carbohydrates contained in OMW, depending on the experimental conditions. Nevertheless, the ozone-pretreated OMW exhibited lower chemical oxygen demand removal and methane production during BMP testing compared to the untreated OMW.

Abstract:
This study was conducted to evaluate the treatability of OMW (olive mill wastewater) with sewage and sewage sludge, which could supplement nutrients and microbes required for OMW treatment and reduce its possible toxicity. The amount of OMW added to an aeration tank was based on the loading difference between the designed and actual COD loads, while the amount added to anaerobic digestion for energy recovery was determined by CH4 production. The COD removal efficiencies were 70–85% for both systems. Compost of OMW with dried sewage sludge also showed a similar temperature profile without OMW addition. This strongly suggested that OMW can be treated at a sewage plant without pretreatment and the treated effluent can be reused in irrigation for an arid region.

Abstract:
Olive Mill Wastewater (OMW), by-product of oil industry, is a dark liquid with a characteristic fetid smell, bitter taste and bright appearance<br>having a high pollution potential, creating serious problems in countries producing olive oil. Azotobacter chroococcum as a Nitrogen-fixing bacteria can bioremediate OMW, by degrading its toxic constituents. With the help of this detoxification process OMW can be used as biofertilizer. In this study, the dynamics of growth and nitrogen fixation at different physiological conditions and nutrient requirements of A. chroococcum in chemically defined N-free medium was determined. These parameters were cultivation conditions such as pH, temperature and aeration and some additives such as inorganic salts, boric acid and nitrogen. Consequently, the maximum cell concentration were obtained when A. chroococcum was grown at neutral pH, 35&amp<br>#61616<br>C, 150 rpm and in medium supplemented with manganese salt at 0.01% concentration. The maximum nitrogen fixation products were attained when A. chroococcum was grown under the same conditions except at pH 8. Further, bioremediation of OMW by A. chroococcum was examined. When A. chroococcum was cultivated in OMW containing basal medium at 10% OMW concentration, a cell density 12 times higher than in the OMW free medium was achieved. Also, it was found to have maximum increase in extracellular protein concentration (112 mg/l) at 10% OMW containing medium and maximum increase in ammonia concentration (9.05 mg/l) at 5% OMW containing medium.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of the study is to in a comparative and causal way explore whether there is a relationship between risk and return and also how it is perceived on the Nordic financial markets. Theory: The theoretical frame of reference applied in the thesis is considered relevant inthe perspective of the study’s purpose and research questions. We have among other theories used The Capital Asset Pricing Model, The Efficient Market Hypothesis and various Behavioural finance theories. Method: The study has its starting point in a quantitative approach with a quantitative data analysis supported by secondary data extracted from Thomson Reuters. Empirics: The empirics contains regression analyses made from calculated secondary data of 240 randomly chosen companies from Nasdaq OMX Stockholm, NasdaqOMX Copenhagen, Nasdaq OMX Helsinki and Oslo Bors. Conclusion: The study conclusions show that there are both a negative and positive relationship between volatility and actual return on the investigated markets. Considering this prior statement we can conclude that the Capital Asset Pricing Model can’t correctly describe the actual relationship between the parameters investigated on the current sample.

Abstract:
Omi/HtrA2 is a mitochondrial serine protease with high homology to the bacterial HtrA proteins. Omi promotes caspase-dependent apoptosis by binding and degrading IAPs-inhibitor of apoptosis proteins. Omi can also induce caspase-independent apoptosis but the actual mechanism is still unknown. IAP's are not the only substrates cleaved by Omi. There are at least two more known substrates of Omi, the HAX-1 and the ped/pea-15 proteins. HS1-associated protein X-1 (HAX-1) is a mitochondrial protein, degraded by Omi after induction of caspase-dependent apoptosis. Ped/pea-15 is also an anti-apoptotic protein and is cleaved by Omi after induction of caspase-independent apoptosis. The proteolytic activity of Omi is necessary and essential for its pro-apoptotic function. Recent studies suggest the proteolytic activity of Omi is regulated by specific protein-protein interactions. Presenilin was identified to be such a regulator of Omi. It binds to the PDZ domain of Omi via its carboxy-terminus and this interaction significantly increases the proteolytic activity of the enzyme. My project was aimed to investigate the normal function of Omi in cell death and the mechanism of its regulation by isolating and characterizing novel Omi interactors. I screened a human melanocyte cDNA library using the yeast-two-hybrid system and Omi as the "bait" protein. Human Rad21 protein was isolated as a specific novel interactor of Omi. Human Rad21 interacted with the PDZ domain of Omi, the part of the protein known to be involved in protein-protein interactions. Human Rad21 is a nuclear protein that plays a role in DNA double-strand break repair and sister chromatid cohesion during metaphase. Several reports suggest hRad21 has also a role in apoptosis; it is cleaved by caspase-3 and part of the protein becomes cytoplasmic. Human Rad21 was not cleaved by Omi in vitro and therefore it is unlikely to be a substrate. When tested in a proteolytic assay Rad21 was able to increase the proteolytic activity of Omi. My work suggests a new mechanism whereby Omi and hRad21 can co-operate to induce cell death. This mechanism necessitates direct interaction of hRad21 with the PDZ domain of Omi resulting in increased proteolytic activity of the enzyme.<br>M.S.<br>Department of Molecular Biology and Microbiology<br>Burnett College of Biomedical Sciences<br>Molecular Biology and Microbiology

Abstract:
Malignant melanoma is the most common malignant tumour of the oral cavity in the dog, with high rate of metastatic dissemination to the regional lymph nodes and distant organs. There is significant overlap in regards of biologic behaviour, histological appearance and genomic alterations between canine and human OMMs. Therefore, the dog is considered a good preclinical model for this deadly tumour. In the first part of this study we aimed to identify genes that are involved in the metastatic dissemination of canine OMMs by microarray mRNA profiling of 4 pairs of primary tumours and their lymph nodal metastases. These genes could represent a future target for the control and hopefully treatment of the metastatic disease. We pointed out the presence of several genes displaying different expression between the primary and the metastatic tumour. In particular, Rac1 seems to play a key role in the dissemination of melanoma cells to the lymph node, most likely due to its regulatory activity of cell motility. In the second part of the study we assessed the potential improvement of detection of lymphatic invasion in canine primary OMMs by using immunohistochemistry for Prox-1, as the detection of lymphatic invasion in a primary tumour is generally considered an unfavourable prognostic factor for several cancers, including human and canine OMMs. We also tried to prove direct correlation between the presence of lymphatic invasion in the primary tumour and regional lymph node metastasis. Our results showed that Prox-1 IHC is not able to enhance detection of lymphatic invasion in the primary site and that the sensitivity of detection of lymphatic invasion in predicting lymph nodal metastasis is low (46.7%), despite high specificity (97%). Finally, we pointed out the presence of interobserver variability in detecting lymphatic invasion in canine primary OMMs, most likely due to interpretative variation.

Abstract:
Abstract. Olive mill wastewater (OMW) is a liquid by-product generated from olive oil processing and represents a significant environmental concern regarding their disposal and management. This paper was carried out to examine the potential use of the Olive Mill Wastewater Ash (OMWA) as a modifier for asphalt binder. An asphalt binder with a penetration grade of 60/70 was used as the control binder in this study. OMWA was added to the base asphalt binder at various amounts (1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5% by weight of asphalt binder). Asphalt binder's physical and rheological properties, such as penetration, ductility, softening point, flash/fire points, and rotational viscosity, were investigated. The laboratory test results revealed that increasing the amount of OMWA in the asphalt binder blend decreased penetration and ductility while increasing the softening point, rotational viscosity, and fire and flash of OMWA-modified asphalt binder. Hence, it is recommended that the OMWA modifier be used in warm regions to resist the plastic deformation of asphalt mixtures. This approach demonstrates the potential for converting waste into a valuable resource in infrastructure development, thereby improving both sustainability and road construction performance.

Abstract:
Background This study assessed the feasibility of improving movement using the FLX musculoskeletal application within a brain injury population, a population with high prevalence of MSK disorders. This study provided a use case for the Goal Manager® Outcome Measures Wizard (OMW), in tracking various metrics generated due to the complexity of co-morbid MSK and brain injury conditions. Methods A 6-to-12-week trial of the application was conducted, followed by quantitative analysis of collected outcome measures and qualitative analysis of participant experience. Participants were recruited via social media and personal correspondence, with confirmation of final numbers at project completion. Data collected included mood measures (GAD7, PHQ9), a customised International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF) Assessment with relevant musculoskeletal codes, and a pre- and post-trial questionnaire assessing technology confidence. EuroQol 5 Dimension Scale (EQ5D) measures were recorded weekly during the trial and tracked using the OMW. Results Quantitative score comparisons evaluated the effect of FLX musculoskeletal interventions in a brain injury population. Study feedback underscored the need for targeted developments to better serve a brain injury population. Full results will be presented following project completion. Conclusions This study demonstrates the benefit of improving movement through targeted MSK interventions and underscores the necessity for centralised quantitative outcome tracking in rehabilitation. The OMW facilitates this, as the diverse metrics investigated within this study demonstrate the practicality and efficiency of a unified platform in clinical research practice. The study also demonstrated the utility of the FLX app in improving musculoskeletal function within this population.

Abstract:
The worldwide olive oil sector is a strategic sector for olive oil producing countries due to olive oil nutrition and health benefits. With what is being produced of olive oil, it continues to produce wastewater with a significant environmental impact due to the high organic load and the biochemical composition of this wastewater, particularly, the presence of microbial growth inhibiting compounds such as phenolic compounds, which makes its biological treatment difficult. On other way, red mud, the main leaching residue resulting from the alkaline treatment of bauxite (Bayer process), can be used as catalyst in chemical processing. Bayer red mud reveals high alkalinity, strong water absorption, and a large content of iron. The presence of metals in the composition of the red mud, such as iron dioxide (hematite), titanium dioxide, etc. allows its use as a catalyst in advanced oxidation processes. In this work, red mud has been revalued as a catalyst in the treatment of olive mill wastewater (OMW) by Fenton reaction. All experiments were carried out at laboratory scale in reactor with capacity of 500 cm3. Experiments have been carried out at different concentrations of red mud 0.05, 0.10, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, 5.0, 20, and 30 g/L. In parallel, three control experiments were carried out using only hydrogen peroxide or hydrochloric acid or red mud without pH adjustment (adsorption experiment). Experimental results have determined that the introduction of red mud as a catalyst in the like Fenton reaction (H2O2/red mud) with concentrations higher than 0.05 g/L has allowed the increase of the degradation percentages until reaching stable values at red mud concentrations higher than 5 g/L. The removal percentages at 0.5 g/L of red mud were COD = 47.1 %, total organic carbon (TOC) = 58.1 %, total carbon (TC) = 66.8 %, total nitrogen = 44.1 %, and total phenolic compounds (TPCs) = 63.5 % versus 57.2 % for COD, 74.4 % for TOC, 79.9 % for TC, 70.7 % for TN, and 66.0 % for TPCs in Fenton like reaction with 5 g/L of red mud. The common operating conditions were initial COD of OMW = 6171.9 mg O2/L, initial TOC of OMW = 3253.7 mg/L, pH = 3, magnetic agitation speed = 460 rpm, environment temperature, and the H2O2 at 10 % (w/v) added to the OMW according to the stoichiometry of the reaction. Given these results, it can be concluded that red mud can be a promising catalyst in oxidation systems based on the Fenton reaction allowing the incorporation of wastes into new green processes leading to the achievement of circular economy in industrial processes.

Full text
Abstract:
A performance study of anaerobic digestion of organic municipal waste in upflow bioreactor with central substrate dispenser is presented. The experimental rig is based on an integrated system of bioreactors consisting of Upflow Bioreactor (UB), Upflow Bioreactor with Central Subtrate Dispenser (UBCSD), and Continous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) each having internal volume of 76 litres, 64.8 litres, and 76 litres respectively. The scheme is used for minimizing the mixing and fouling problems associated with some conventional bioreactors during digestion reaction. Organic municipal waste (OMW) was used to prepare the slurry for the reactors. Microbial reaction was enhanced during operation using a measured quantity (2kg) of substances from the rumen of a newly slaughtered cow. The experimentation from feeder tank to Bioreactors was carried out for a period of 10-days Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) at 37°C. Effects of some basic parameters affecting anaerobic digestion in terms of biogas production and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) reduction were carried out. They include substrate temperature, minimal average temperature, changes in temperature, substrate content and properties, available nutrient, retention time, organic loading rate, pH level, nitrogen inhibition and C/N ratio, substrate agitation, and inhibitory factors. Results showed that UBSCD generated the highest level of Biogas yield of up to 52915 ml, while UB and CSTR yielded 23550ml and 28980ml respectively. Similarly for COD removal, 24343 mg/l, 5775.4 mg/l, and 23155 mg/l were achieved for UBCSD, UB and CSTR respectively from an initial value of 120,320 mg/l. These results show that the use of UBCSD better enhances biofuel production from organic municipal waste.
