Zhou, Zongwei. "On-demand Isolated I/O for Security-sensitive Applications on Commodity Platforms." Research Showcase @ CMU, 2014. http://repository.cmu.edu/dissertations/328.

Full text
Abstract:
Today large software systems (i.e., giants) thrive in commodity markets, but are untrustworthy due to their numerous and inevitable software bugs that can be exploited by the adversary. Thus, the best hope of security is that some small, simple, and trustworthy software components (i.e., wimps) can be protected from attacks launched by adversary-controlled giants. However, wimps in isolation typically give up a variety of basic services (e.g., file system, networking, device I/O), trading usefulness and viability with security. Among these basic services, isolated I/O channels remained an unmet challenge over the past three decades. Isolated I/O is a critical security primitive for a myriad of applications (e.g., secure user interface, remote device control). With this primitive, isolated wimps can transfer I/O data to commodity peripheral devices and the data secrecy and authenticity are protected from the co-existing giants. This thesis addresses this challenge by proposing a new security architecture to provide services to isolated wimps. Instead of restructuring the giants or bloating the Trusted Computing Base that underpins wimp-giant isolation (dubbed underlying TCB), this thesis presents a unique on-demand I/O isolation model and a trusted add-on component called wimpy kernel to instantiate this model. In our model, the wimpy kernel dynamically takes control of the devices managed by a commodity OS, connects them to the isolated wimps, and relinquishes controls to the OS when done. This model creates ample opportunities for the wimpy kernel to outsource I/O subsystem functions to the untrusted OS and verify their results. The wimpy kernel further exports device drivers and I/O subsystem code to wimps and mediates the operations of the exported code. These two methodologies help to significantly reduce the size and complexity of the wimpy kernel for high security assurance. Using the popular and complex USB subsystem as a case study, this thesis illustrates the dramatic reduction of the wimpy kernel; i.e., over 99% of the Linux USB code base is removed. In addition, the wimpy kernel also composes with the underlying TCB, by retaining its code size, complexity and security properties.

Salman, S. "Parameter estimation of synchronous generators on isolated systems." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1997. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.593388.

Full text
Abstract:
The design of electrical power systems on offshore platforms involves ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the systems. These criteria prompted the need for performing short-circuit studies and fault level calculations. Using the results obtained from these studies together with the load data, the switchgear rating and fault rating of the switchboard can be determined. This study will aid the designer in determining both transient and substransient reactances of the generators, whereby the transient reactance is used in studying the effect of starting a large motor such as a compressor or a pump and the substransient reactance is used in short circuit studies. The generators parameters are therefore essential in the determination of circuit breaker setting, switchboard ratings and the starting capability of motors. These factors have prompted research into methods for determining the parameters of synchronous generators. The tests approved by the British Standards which are usually employed by manufacturers, however suffer from a number of disadvantages such as the possibility of damage to the generator windings as a result of the sudden three phase short circuit test. On the other hand some of these tests such as the d.c. standstill decay test are quoted as 'unconfirmed testing methods'. This study is therefore aimed at developing a method whereby the parameters of synchronous machines can be estimated directly from the on-line voltage and current waveforms. The study starts by determining the parameters of two salient pole generators using the conventional methods. This is used later to establish the accuracy of the proposed method. The effect of varying the generators parameters on voltage and current waveforms is then analysed, leading to the introduction of a method using only three simple tests. The accuracy and reliability of the method is demonstrated using the software simulator SABER. Finally the new parameter estimating technique is used to determine saturated parameters of the two laboratory generators for different field excitations.

Reyhanogullari, Naim Eser. "Vertical Ground Motion Influence On Seismically Isolated &amp." Master's thesis, METU, 2010. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/2/12611785/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study influences of vertical ground motion on seismically isolated bridges were investigated for seven different earthquake data. One assessment of bearing effect involves the calculation of vertical earthquake load on the seismically isolated bridges. This paper investigates the influence of vertical earthquake excitation on the response of briefly steel girder composite bridges (SCB) with and without seismic isolation through specifically selected earthquakes. In detail, the bridge is composed of 30m long three spans, concrete double piers at each axis supported by mat foundations with pile systems. At both end of the spans there exists concrete abutments to support superstructure of the bridge. SCBs which were seismically isolated with nine commonly preferred different lead&amp<br>#8208<br>rubber bearings (LRB) under each steel girder were analyzed. Then, the comparisons were made with a SCB without seismic isolation. Initially, a preliminary design was made and reasonable sections for the bridge have been obtained. As a result of this, the steel girder bridge sections were checked with AASHTO provisions and analytical model was updated accordingly. Earthquake records were thought as the main loading sources. Hence both cases were exposed to tri&amp<br>#8208<br>axial earthquake loads in order to understand the effects under such circumstances. Seven near fault earthquake data were selected by considering possession of directivity. Several runs using the chosen earthquakes were performed in order to be able to derive satisfactory comparisons between different types of isolators. Analytical calculations were conducted using well known structural analysis software (SAS) SAP2000. Nonlinear time history analysis was performed using the analytical model of the bridge with and without seismic isolation. Response data collected from SAS was used to determine the vertical load on the piers and middle span midspan moment on the steel girders due to the vertical and horizontal component of excitation. Comparisons dealing with the effects of horizontal only and horizontal plus vertical earthquake loads were introduced.

Kerr, Jeremy M. "Environmental Controls on Depositional Patterns of Isolated Carbonate Platforms." Diss., NSUWorks, 2018. https://nsuworks.nova.edu/occ_stuetd/487.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the influence of the environment on the lateral spatial patterning of facies in modern isolated carbonate platforms through six studies. The first study describes the creation of a database of benthic habitat and bathymetric maps derived from multispectral satellite imagery and the field data used calibrate and validate the mapping algorithms. The second study develops and assesses a new approach for remotely-deriving water depth from multispectral satellite imagery without the need for ground-truth information. The third study identifies a criterion for distinguishing between facies belts and mosaics and deploys the criterion to investigate the co-occurrence of these arrangements within modern carbonate depositional systems. The fourth study explores the geologic history of an isolated carbonate platform in the Bahamas, Cay Sal Bank, to understand why the lateral spatial pattering observed in this site differs from the patterns observed in neighboring platforms. The fifth study explores the distribution of carbonate facies in relation to wave energy and water depth for two detached ramps in the Red Sea, Ras Al-Qisbah and Al Wajh. The last study investigates the recovery of scleractinian communities along the coasts of two islands in the Galapagos archipelago, Darwin and Wennman (Wolf) Islands, following a large-scale disturbance in the 1980s. Together, these six studies provide new insight into the spatial patterning of facies within modern carbonate depositional systems and the influence of the environment on the observed arrangements.

Elliott-Pearce, Ruth Ann. "The effect of drugs on isolated detrusor muscle contraction." Thesis, University of Leicester, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/34339.

Full text
Abstract:
Detrusor instability is the commonest type of urinary incontinence in the elderly and is present in up to 50% of patients attending continence clinics. Treatment of this condition, aimed at reducing uncontrollable detrusor contractions, is at present unsatisfactory. For example, calcium antagonists are cliniclly disappointing and studies were carried out to investigate why they are ineffective. Rats were treated with nimodipine for 8 days or with a single dose. Treatment for 8 days had no effect on isolated detrasor contraction but a single dose reduced detrasor contractile response. It is propossed that chronic treatment with nimodipine caused an up-regulation of calcium channels as a compensatory mechanism. Oestrogens have been shown to have an inhibitory effect on detrusor muscle contraction after in vitro and in vivo treatment. In post-menopausal women with a uterus unopposed oestrogens should not be given, but progesterone has anti-oestrogenic actions. When rats were treated with oestrogen and progesterone for 8 days, there was no effect on rat detrasor contractile response. An anti-oestrogenic effect of progesterone has therefore been demonstrated in rat detrusor smooth muscle. Caffeine has been shown to increase detrasor pressme on bladder filling in patients with detrusor instability. The effect of low concentrations of caffeine on the contractile response of isolated human and rat detrusor muscle was therefore determined. Caffeine was found to have only a slight potentiating effect on isolated human and rat detruosr muscle contraction. The results in this thesis have important clinical imphcations for the treatment of detrusor instability. It may be more effective to administer calcium antagonists in an intermittent manner. Oestrogens are better given alone or with the lowest possible dose of progestogens. Caffeine would not be contraindicated in patients with detrusor instability.

Higazy, M. G. A. F. I. "Influence of isolated backward-facing steps on boundary layers." Thesis, University of Leicester, 1986. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/34778.

Full text
Abstract:
The drag of backward-facing steps was experimentally measured in a series of turbulent boundary layer flows and in a laminar flow. The main objective of the investigation was to study the influence of the freestream pressure gradients on the drag values for backward-facing steps in turbulent boundary layer flows. The measured boundary layer characteristics of all the established flows are in very good agreement with other published results and their two-dimensionality was ascertained. Two different techniques have been used to measure the drag of such steps. The momentum thickness technique was not suitable for determining the drag of such small irregularities, since the incremental increase in the momentum thickness due to the irregularities was small and the method of calculation was crude. The pressure distribution technique was found to be a more suitable method of estimating this drag. When applied appropriately the measurement uncertainty was small. The drag results published by Gaudet and Johnson for backward-facing steps in a zero-pressure gradient have been considerably extended for a number of turbulent boundary layer flows with values of pressure gradient parameter, a, from -0.97 X 10-3 to 9.14 X 10-3. For small steps results covered a range of irregularity Reynolds number of 150 to 900. For large steps in zero-pressure gradient flow this range was increased up to 3500, and up to 2000 in a mild adverse pressure gradient flow. The drags of backward-facing steps in a laminar boundary layer flow on a flat plate have been measured by the pressure distribution technique. No correlation was made for the drag of such steps in the laminar boundary layer, however a comparison between the total drag of the plate with and without the largest step showed that the total drag of the plate increased by only some 65 % of the clean surface drag value.

Abstract:
Power electronic converters are being increasingly used on isolated marine power systems, to provide variable speed control of electric motors. As the rating of these drive converters increases, the converter load becomes a significant part of the total system load. Traditional methods for calculating the performance characristics, which assume the presence of an infinite busbar on the system, are not appropriate for such systems. The intercoupling which exists between system components such as synchronous generators, converters, and the drive motor must be included in the calculation. In this thesis, a commercially available software simulator Saber, is used to model a complete electrical cycloconverter propulsion drive, of the type which may be used for future Royal Navy frigates. This model includes the synchronous generators, cycloconverters, and induction motor drives. The simulation is performed in the time domain, which ensures that the intercoupling present between system components is preserved. The simulation is not restricted to one converter configuration, and has been used to investigate the relative merits of a number of possible converter connections. This method can be used to study drive performance under unbalanced conditions as well as for normal balanced operation. There is no perceived limit to the size, or complexity, of the converter systems which can be studied using this method. The only cost would be increased computer run times.

Talbot, James P. "On the performance of base-isolated buildings : a generic model." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2002. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/244274.

Full text
Abstract:
Ground-borne vibration has existed ever since the development of urban road and rail networks. Vibration generated by the moving traffic propagates through the ground and into buildings, resulting in unacceptable levels of internal noise and vibration. A common solution to this increasingly significant problem is the base-isolation of buildings by incorporating vibration isolation bearings between the buildings and their foundations. This technique has been employed for over forty years but the exact performance of base isolation remains uncertain. This dissertation is concerned with the development of a generic computational model; generic in that it accounts for the essential dynamic behaviour of a typical base-isolated building in order to make predictions of isolation performance. The model is a linear one, formulated in the frequency domain, and consists of a two-dimensional portal-frame model of a building coupled to a three-dimensional boundary-element model of a piled-foundation. Both components of the model achieve computational efficiency by assuming they are infinitely long and using periodic structure theory. The development of the model is described systematically, from the modelling of a building and its isolation bearings to that of its foundation. The majority of the work is concerned with the piled-foundation model, which is comprehensive in that it accounts for the vertical, horizontal and rotational motion of the pile heads due to both direct pile-head loading and interaction through wave propagation in the surrounding soil. It is shown that this level of detail is important in the prediction of base isolation efficiency. A key question facing designers is not only how but on what basis base isolation should be assessed, since fundamental problems exist with the existing measures of isolation performance. Power flow analysis is explored and the concept of power flow insertion gain, based on the total mean vibrational power flow entering a building, is introduced as a useful measure of isolation performance. This is shown to offer clear benefits by providing a single measure of performance that is suitable for design purposes. Finally, the development of a prototype force-sensitive vibration isolation bearing is described as a contribution to verifying base-isolation theory with experiments.

Full text
Abstract:
The use of base isolation to help mitigate and reduce the effects of earthquake excitations has become common place on many important structures. There is also a larger amount of heavier machinery and equipment being stored in some of these important structures; this means that there is a possibility that there are mass irregularities with in a structure. While the response of structures that have been base isolated has been studied they are typically design with floors having a uniform mass. This thesis investigates how mass irregularities affect the response of the floor accelerations and interstorey drifts within a flexural structure with and without a base isolation unit. The ductility demand of the isolator unit is also investigated at during the course of the analysis. The reason for observing the response of the structure is because often in building design there is a need to have floors that have larger masses then the rest of the structure, and understanding how these mass irregularities affect the response of the structure, then the designing of such structures will be simpler during the initial concept stage.

Torre, Pedraza Azahara de la. "On the fractional Yamabe problem with isolated singularities and related issues." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/404450.

Full text
Abstract:
My research is based on non-local elliptic semilinear equations in conformal geometry. The fractional curvature is defined from the conformal fractional Laplacian and it is a non-local version of some of the classical local curvatures such as the scalar curvature, the fourth-order Q-curvature or the mean curvature. This new notion of non-local curvature has good conformal properties that allow to treat classical problems from a more general convexity point of view. Note that the fractional curvature in my research is different from the one defined by Caffarelli, Roquejoffre and Savin . In particular, I have worked on the fractional singular Yamabe problem and related issues. This problem arises in conformal geometry when we try to find a conformal metric to a given one having constant fractional curvature and prescribed singularities. The precise problem I considered in my thesis was to find solutions for the fractional Yamabe problem in the Eucliden space of dimension bigger than 2¿, 0<¿<1, with prescribed isolated singularities: first, I just considered radial solutions when there is an isolated singularity and, later, the problem of removing a finite number of points. This thesis consists of nine chapters. First, we give is a brief introduction and summary of the thesis. Next, provide some background, notation and known results. Later, we show the main results, i.e, Chapters 3, 4, 5 and 6. After this, we introduce the research plan to come. The thesis also has two appendixes with useful computations. I started my research focusing on the geometric interpretation of the problem for an isolated singularity (Chapter 3). This study is based on an extension problem for the computation of the conformal fractional Laplacian. This is a Dirichlet-to-Neumann problem for a degenerate elliptic, but local, equation, which gives an example of a boundary reaction problem where the nonlinearity is of power type with the critical Sobolev exponent. Later, I treated the problem as an integro-differential equation, facing two main difficulties: the lack of compactness and the fact that we are dealing with a non-local ODE (Chapter 4) . Our study is carried out using variational methods and it proves the existence of Delaunay-type solutions for the problem. These are radially symmetric metrics with constant fractional curvature. Finally, I applied some gluing methods together with a Lyapunov reduction to construct solutions for the singular fractional Yamabe problem when the singular set consists of a given finite number of points (Chapter 5). At the moment, I am working on the fractional Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality, which is an interpolation between the Hardy and Sobolev fractional inequalities. In particular, I am looking at the radial symmetry or symmetry breaking of the minimizers (Chapter 6).

Stelmaszek, Grzegorz. "Effect of the Vertical Component of Acceleration on Base - Isolated Structures." OpenSIUC, 2011. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/theses/707.

Abstract:
Base isolation has been widely used to reduce the risk caused by horizontal ground motion during an earthquake. Base isolation works well to reduce the risk of a seismic event because it increases the structures natural period of vibration thus reducing the horizontal acceleration transmitted to the structure. However, research conducted in recent years showed that it is also important to include the vertical component of acceleration when designing base isolated structures. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to investigate the effect that the vertical component of acceleration has on base isolated structures by investigating the impact of vertical acceleration on the isolator stiffness, structural response and isolator displacement. A time history analysis showed that vertical acceleration has a limited effect on the isolator stiffness. The results indicated that the effect of vertical acceleration is primarily limited to a small increase in axial force on the isolator. Lastly the results showed that vertical acceleration has no impact on isolator displacement.

Rusin, Patricia Anne. "Antibiotic resistance, heavy metal resistance, chlorine resistance and phage typing patterns of fecal coliforms isolated from secondary effluent." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/184925.

Full text
Abstract:
Antibiotic resistance profiles of fecal coliform isolated from unchlorinated and chlorinated secondary effluent were determined. Of 332 fecal coliforms isolated from chlorinated effluent a mean of 48% were multiply antibiotic resistant. In contrast, of 347 fecal coliforms isolated from unchlorinated effluent a mean of 29% were multiply antibiotic resistant. Resistance to ampicillin, cephalothin, and carbenicillin were significantly higher in the former than the latter. Randomly selected isolates survived and/or grew in sterile and unsterile effluent retaining resistance patterns for 40 days. Resistance factors were transferred in laboratory medium at frequencies from 0 to 1.2 x 10⁻² (number of recombinants/number of recipients) and in sterile neutralized tertiary effluent at frequencies from 0 to 1.0 x 10⁻⁴. Resuscitative techniques were necessary for optimal recovery of fecal coliforms from effluent using selective media. Antibiotic resistance patterns of fecal coliforms isolated from unchlorinated and chlorinated effluent was not associated with chlorine or heavy metal resistance. Multiply antibiotic resistant fecal coliforms from chlorinated effluent were significantly less sensitive to lytic phage than multiply antibiotic sensitive fecal coliforms from unchlorinated effluent (p < .05). Using group discriminate analysis of data, phage typing techniques were shown to be a potential tool for tracing fecal contamination of groundwater.

Abstract:
This study was performed to test the in vitro effects of a Lactobacillus rhamnosus isolate from “amabere amaruranu”, a traditional Kenyan cultured milk, on 3T3-L1 and Caco-2 cell lines. Cultures of fully mature 3T3-L1 adipocytes were treated with bacterial isolate cell extract (CE), filtered spent broth (FSB) from overnight bacterial culture, or with a PBS control. Expression levels of PPAR³1 and 2, C/EBP±, and ATGL proteins in 3T3-L1 cells were upregulated by FSB treatment. CE treatment did not affect protein expression levels. Expression of MTTP and SREBP-1c proteins in Caco-2 cells showed no change with either treatment. Optical density measurements from Oil-Red-O stained 3T3-L1 adipocytes increased from PBS control cells to 25μl/ml FSB treated cells; measurements were reduced by treatments above 25μl/ml FSB. In conclusion, filtered spent broth prepared from a culture of Lactobacillus rhamnosus, isolated from “amabere amaruranu” cultured milk showed PPAR³1 and 2, C/EBP±, and ATGL agonistic properties.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>土木工程學研究所<br>90<br>The concept of seismic isolation design is to elongate the period of structure in order to reduce the response of whole system. In 921 Chi-chi earthquake, however, it exists so called near-fault earthquake characteristics which enlarge the response of middle to long period structures and may induce exceeding expectations of earthquake load. By using SAP 2000 program, this thesis constructed a seismic isolation designed bridge model to study the near-fault earthquake’s influence on seismically isolated bridge. The model is checked its linear behavior from ambient vibration test and force vibration test and non-linear behavior from log of earthquake data by set-up sensors. After ascertaining the accuracy of model, it was performed to simulated different site acceleration history, and had the results that near-fault earthquake can make seismically isolated bridge to over-loading. On the other hand, the thesis discussed the effect of shear key and abutment. Additional dampers and other unseating device are simulated to suggest some method for seismically isolated bridge under near-fault earthquake.

Huang, Cheng-Chang. "Local scour at isolated obstacles on river beds." Thesis, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/1957/37321.

Full text
Abstract:
Maximum equilibrium scour depths, equilibrium scour volumes, and induced equilibrium movements at isolated obstacles on river beds were investigated in clear-water scour. The research was achieved by a systematic flume study based on the results of dimensional analysis of local scour. The main tested obstacles for local scour were cubes. Local scour at a circular cylinder of aspect ratio 1 and a sphere were also examined for comparison with scour at cubes. Each obstacle was placed on a flat movable bed and oriented normal to the incident flow. Non-cohesive uniform medium sand and very fine gravel were used as movable beds. The tested flow conditions were controlled to give many combinations of the relevant dimensionless parameters for local scour: the flow Froude Number, relative obstacle size, and relative roughness of bed material. Water surface profiles and longitudinal velocity profiles along the plane of symmetry, as well as the horizontal velocities near the bed around isolated obstacles on a fixed bed were examined in several runs. For a slightly submerged cube, the path of maximum velocity downstream of the cube moves from the water surface into the lower part of the flow. At a greater distance downstream, the path of maximum velocity tends to move upward toward the water surface. An increase of flow Froude Number leads to a hydraulic jump behind the cube. The relative longitudinal velocity near the bed is increased in this region. The decrease of relative water depth or the increase of flow Froude Number can lead to increased average relative horizontal velocity (V/u) near a cube. The cube has the highest average V/u value, as compared to flow near a circular cylinder and a sphere. The local scour processes and equilibrium scour patterns at isolated cubes on movable beds were also examined. There is not a unique equilibrium scour pattern for clear-water scour at a cube on a movable bed. Equations were developed to predict the maximum equilibrium scour depth and scour volume and the critical condition for incipient motion of bed material at a cube in clear-water scour. As the water becomes relatively deep, the shape effect of the circular cylinder and the sphere become negligible. The major equilibrium movement of a cube on a movable bed due to scour involves longitudinal displacement, vertical settlement, and longitudinal inclination. Equations were developed to predict the equilibrium movement and the critical condition for incipient upstream movement of a cube in clear-water scour.<br>Graduation date: 1991

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>電機與控制工程系<br>90<br>The major concept in this thesis is about the design of on-line isolated words recognition systems. By combining with the traditional hidden Markov model and learning vector quantization, not only the recognition accuracy will increase but also computations will decrease. Therefore, the reaction time of the speech recognition will also decrease. By using the learning function to adjust directly the on-line database with the misclassified patterns, it will be fast and useful to improve the recognition accuracy. For the data training, the Viterbi algorithm has been used to find the best stat sequence for speaker-independent. And the k-means algorithm has been also used to cluster the mean vectors and variance vectors in each state in order to decrease the number of models in our database. Besides, the connected digits recognition will be introduced conceptually. The one-state algorithm based on the dynamic time warping is used to recognize the connected digits. However, the models of the database will influence greatly the recognition result by using the one-state algorithm. So the training data must be chosen carefully.

Abstract:
碩士<br>中國醫藥學院<br>醫學研究所<br>87<br>Pipoxolan HCl [5,5-diphenyl-2-(2’piperidino-ethyl)-1,3-dioxolan-4-one hydrochloride] is a derivative of 1,3-dioxolan-4-one. The major clinical use of this drug is to relax the spasm of smooth muscle. Isolated aorta, uterus and urinary bladder smooth muscle have been used in this experiment to investigate the mechanism of pipoxolan. Pipoxolan can inhibit the contraction induced by acetylcholine, oxytocin or prostaglandin E2 in rat uterus smooth muscle and pipoxolan can also inhibit acetylcholine- induced rat urinary bladder contraction. The vasocontraction induced by norepinephrine or high potassium can be inhibited pipoxolan. When pretreatment with atropine (antimuscarinic agent) or diphenhydramine (antihistaminergic agent) did not affect the relaxation of pipoxolan. The relaxation of pipoxolan can be enhance by sodium nitroprusside and inhibited by thapsigargin and cyclopiazonic acid bath are Ca2+-ATPase inhibitor in dose-dependent manner. The contraction induced by 5 mM caffeine can be dose-dependently increased by pipoxolan but it does not affect the contraction evoked by 10 mM caffeine. In summary, the relaxation of pipoxolan produced by pipoxolan is to activate the Ca2+-ATPase which can reuptake the cytoplasm calcium into the sacroplasmic rerticulum then reduced the concentration of calcium and produced the relaxation.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>電機與控制工程系<br>88<br>An isolated word speech recognizer is introduced in this thesis. This system can recognize Chinese syllables and digits. The recognition system is based on using hidden Markov model (HMM). The linear prediction coefficients (LPC) were used as the features of each speech frame, and the LPC-derived cepstral coefficients and its derivatives were the actual feature vectors used in speech recognition. In the model topology, we use left-to-right HMM as the speech model. We use continuous type of the probability density function (CDHMM). The basic clustering algorithm is the modified k-means algorithm. We implemented Viterbi algorithm in decoding the optimal state sequence both in the training and recognition procedure. The training method is the so-called "segmental K-means algorithm". The final recognition decision picks up the model that has the maximum likelihood for the input word. In the source of speech database, there are utterances made by a fixed group of six people. We made some experiments by varying LPC orders, state numbers, and mixture numbers to test the recognition accuracy. The final results can be a reference to the voice-command application in the future.
