Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the differences between 9-ending on promotion prices used by Thai retailers and Swedish retailers. The quantitative research approach is the chosen method in order to evaluate the differences between 9-ending on promotion prices used by Thai retailers and Swedish retailers. The collection of data will be mainly concentrated on primary data through brochures from retailers in both countries. Evaluation of the price endings for advertised products in the brochures from Thai and Swedish retailers founded the distinctions between the use of 9-ending prices in many ways such as the way the retailers used left and right digits for price endings, the way they set the prices compared between the same product category and the same product sub-category.

Abstract:
In DAYS ENDING IN WHY, interdisciplinary artist Julia Martin identifies the schism of her autobiographical practice: deep melancholia and absurd irony. The fragmentation of the works presented knowingly resist cohesion, instead, through their arrangements and the potentials of space between them, they carry on conversations with one another. Rooted in the personal narrative, the works span across multiple mediums; photography, film, installation/sculpture, and literature. Martin emphasizes both the tragic and the comedic, pacing the show as a play between the two. Also, there are cats. So many cats.

Greenberg, Nicole. "Ending Sexualized Violence: International Jurisprudence." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2019. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/scripps_theses/1381.

Full text
Abstract:
Sexualized violence continues to threaten the autonomy of individuals and violate human rights. Scholars debate the effectiveness of international treaties in addressing this problem. The Convention on Elimination and Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) of 1979 requires ratifying countries to uplift equality and denounce discrimination of women nationally, in public and private spheres. Examining Bosnia and Herzegovina as a case study shows the effectiveness CEDAW has in creating political and social change. In addition, the Bosnian War illustrates the threat sexualized violence has on individual autonomy. Findings show that CEDAW and grassroots feminist activism are successful together in advocating for social and political change. These results support the power of international treaties when combined with grassroots support for the cause. Over time, social change is possible as a consequence of international jurisprudence, which will help end sexualized violence globally, one individual at a time.

Accordingly, my critique regarding how Amazonian time and space is constructed and problematised by the narrator's characterisation of the twin brothers Omar and Yaqub, who are the novel's protagonists, shall be developed through the antipastoral and postcolonial analytical lenses as they are elaborated by Frederick Douglass (1845) and Stuart Hall (1996). The findings are guided by my research questions regarding the narrator's response to Michael Bennett's concept of antipastoral ecocriticism (2001) and to the developmentalist discourse of linear temporality and hierarchic spatiality as examined by Johannes Fabian (1983) inasmuch as such results reveal how the ideological shift from pastoral to antipastoral in his point of view concerning the utopian hope for "a glorious future" (Hatoum, 33) uncovers the inherent flaws of developmentalist linearity.<br><br>Este estudo discute o desafio descolonizante contra a representação desenvolvimentista da Amazônia abordando, mais especificamente, o discurso normativo da temporalidade e espacialidade hegemônicas cujos pilares arbitrários são questionados por Eduardo Galeano (1978) e Judith Halberstam (2005); para este fim as perspectivas articuladas gradualmente por Nael, o narrador do romance Dois Irmãos (2000), de Milton Hatoum, são analisadas com o intuito de identificar como suas descrições dos eventos narrados entram em choque com as noções contemporâneas de progresso e desenvolvimento.

Abstract:
We were accepted to the field study Dignity and therefore chose to write our thesis in connection with it. Our subject is the oasis of Siwa in Egypt. The society has long been isolated, and therefore, the city has been able to preserve their handicraft methods and values. We chose to study the Ecological and Handicraft Development Center, which is a newly opened center for craft production. We wanted to see how the centre could use storytelling as a marketing strategy. Our main problem is: How can Ecological and Handicraft Development Center use storytelling to promote their handicraft products? The investigation will explore the concept of storytelling related to branding. It will make proposals on an appropriate approach for Ecological and Handicraft Development Center. The market for organic products is also highlighted in the study. To highlight the difficulties, two companies will act as examples. We chose to look at our thesis from a hermeneutic approach because the aim is not to obtain an absolute truth, but to ensure the empirical data from different perspectives and thus get a deeper understanding. The empirical data will mainly consist of soft data and we want to understand the chosen area, therefore we will conduct a qualitative study. The purpose is normative, because the result will consist of proposals for the centre. The focus on our theories is storytelling. Storytelling is a relatively new concept in marketing. Corporate storytelling is defined as storytelling in organizations or businesses, in both internal and external context. The company analyzes its own identity in order to find core values and build the story around them. There are various criteria narrators should be taken into account when a story is built. Each story must have a message, a conflict, characters and plot. It should be short and not too informative since the reader needs space to create his/her own image and thus be a part of the story. Storytelling is according to several theorists a useful tool for branding. Green marketing is the process of selling products or services through the use of their environmental benefits in marketing. Customers today are skeptical concerning green marketing. This is because companies in the 1990s, claimed that they were selling organic products when they did not. However, a new customer has risen through the ongoing environmental and ethical debate. The customers have an ecologically conscience and buy products based on these values. Fair trade is an area in the green marketing, where companies can be certified. It requires that the organization follow predetermined guidelines. Through the research we found that the Ecological and Handicraft Development Center’s core values is their desire to preserve handicraft traditions in Siwa and help the society. The company should use a true story because with a fictitious one it will probably harm the company more. With the continuing debate about ethics and problems in society it is likely that consumers will be upset if the truth is discovered. The company can use either a community story or a story about the founding of the company as a storytelling. Ecological and Handicraft Development Center is a newly established small company, hence should seize the opportunity to use digital storytelling. This method does not require vast resources. It is easy to spread and can be displayed on web sites, conferences, trade fairs or in mobile phones.<br>Program: Textilekonomutbildningen

Abstract:
Studying the interaction of people with the objects around them is essential to designers. A designer must study in detail: the hold, the fit in the hand, the effect of movement, the placement, and the juxtaposition and relation of objects to one another. Insight derived from such investigation determines the form given to an object. However, the answer is not a static or rote response to function. The designer searches to balance meaning with practicality, while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of perception to make people reconsider how and why objects exist. Questions of changing social customs, habits, rituals and traditions are explored. The resulting form reflects the manner in which the object is used. Shape is given to ritual. The intent is for design to reflect the order of day to day existence. It is not important whether an object is a recognizable form or whether it looks like its predecessors. However, upon consideration one should realize the form is correct. The object possesses meaning; it is appropriate for its time. The process is on-going, requiring the designer to continually re-evaluate and re-define the human condition by assessing the world we make and how we exist within it. One pursues better ways to facilitate daily life, never becoming complacent with existing products. More acutely, it is requisite for the designer to maintain an ongoing dialogue with their work-an empirical process of evaluating and analyzing past objects in order to make the decisions that allow the beginning of the next.<br>Master of Architecture

Freeman-Ashill, Laura. "Therapists' experiences after ending personal psychoanalytic psychotherapy." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2006. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/10289/.

Abstract:
Literature review: This review explores the literature on clients' retrospective accounts of their therapy, looking at satisfaction with services, both short and long-term changes reported and factors found helpful and unhelpful in therapy. There are many factors that seem to be common to clients' experiences regardless of the type of therapy they received, although there is limited evidence that some specific factors are important too. Clients' views of therapy also appear to vary according to the time point at which they are measured. However, future work needs to be less theory driven and concentrate more on including clients in the research process in order to decrease constraints on their accounts. Research report: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of therapists' experiences after ending psychoanalytic psychotherapy. A sample of eight therapists who finished therapy at least two years ago was interviewed about their experiences. Four master themes were identified including 'Therapy Stays with Me', 'Personal Growth', 'Life and Therapy Becoming Interwoven' and 'Contrasting Information'. Associated sub-themes were also outlined and their relationship to the literature and implications for clinical practice were discussed. Critical Appraisal: This section gives a commentary on the processes of planning and undertaking the research, including personal reflections on learning and experience within this.

Abstract:
Once upon a time in the promised land of Information Society there was a widespread concern for the dreaded Digital Divide. In the wide range of modern stories and "fairytales" in our technoromantic era, access to and knowledge about computers always seem to hold the key to a prosperous future, while deprivation of such access will doom you to the far side of the Digital Divide. ICT (information and communication technology) thus seems to be the driving force of the 21st century as the electricity was for the 20th. As a result, the policymakers of Norway, even if, or just because, they rule a small country, are afraid of falling behind on the golden route to the future, and thus aspire to be on the right side of the digital divide. This is in accordance with general concerns in other countries and the EU about lagging behind, since they have observed that Japan and USA have been leading the way enroute to the Information Society (Selwyn 2002, Servaes and Heinderyckx 2002). This is also a double drama because as in the traditional fairytales, princesses are in special danger or have wandered off and must be rescued by the heroes: …knowledge in technology must be shared by all groups in order to prevent new differences from developing in the presuppositions for participation. Dissemination must thus proceed so that it does not consolidate traditional gender divisions where girls are raised to believe that "women do not understand" natural science and technology. Girls and computing has been a topic in the Norwegian public discourse since "once upon a time" around 25 years ago, and I will through this collection of articles investigate various stories about the girls and computing problem at different sites and look into how these stories relate to each other.

Abstract:
IT projects serve as the foundation through which a number of organizationalInformation Technology benefits can be created. However, it appears to be acomplicated task with great economic consequences at stake to finish a project beforepositive results can be reached. Project closure, the very last phase of the project lifecycle, seems to be underrepresented in current research compared to the other phasesof the project life cycle. The research regarding postponed closure, meaning thatprojects, which technically are finished, are still allowed to continue, or projects thatare directly unfeasible and therefore should be prematurely terminated, is even moreabsent. This indicates that problems arise somewhere, which is what will beinvestigated in this study. The aim of this study is to gain an understanding to the underlying reasons whycertain projects face a delayed closure, when they in reality should be finalizedearlier. In order to do so, a semi-structured interview study was carried out andpresented in a qualitative data analysis. The results of this study, based on empiricalfindings and support from theoretical frameworks, and presented in an analysis anddiscussion, indicates that there are a number of reasons that are causing postponedclosure. Among others, it has been noted that the planning for project closure maybegin too late in the process, that poor governance from the project manager and thesteering committee could be the result of hesitation to strict decision-making, and anunprepared receiving organization as a result of unsuccessful communication anddocumentation between internal and external stakeholders.

Cengiz, Ovunc. "Ending The Exile Of Desire In Spinoza And Hegel." Master's thesis, METU, 2007. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12609074/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The main objective of this master&rsquo<br>s thesis is to analyze the place assigned to the phenomenon of desire by Hegel and Spinoza, and to show that the main difference between two philosophers in terms of their understanding of desire and human phenomenon consists in their understanding of the relation between the substance and particulars. In order to fulfill the requirements of this objective, what is focused on is, as different from a certain philosophical thought excluding desire from a true account of human phenomenon due to two aspects of desire, namely being an immediate drive and being purely self-referential, which are not regarded as being capable of explaining the specific distinctness of human being, how Spinoza and Hegel give an account of desire, and how they conceive mentioned aspects of desire. Throughout the thesis, first Spinoza&rsquo<br>s ontology, as it is elaborated in the Ethics, and the place of the phenomenon of desire in this ontology are explained. Then through an analysis of the fourth chapter of the Phenomenology of Spirit, it is argued that Hegel&rsquo<br>s conception of desire enables one to conceive the distinctive human institutions such as sociality, morality, and etc., as derivatives of desire. Finally it is argued that, since Hegel conceives the relation between the substance and particulars as a total detachment, he is able to give the spiritual dimension of human phenomenon in terms of desire. In this way moreover the specific distinctness of the human phenomenon is preserved in the philosophy of Hegel.

Zheng, Chen Chen. "The effect of price-ending on luxury and necessity." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Psychology, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1532.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to see whether price endings affect people's perceptions of luxury and necessity goods. There is evidence that the rightmost digits, or endings, of retail prices can communicate meanings to consumers. Some researchers (Schindler and Kirby, 1997; Stiving and Winer, 1997; Thomas and Morwitz, 2005) argued that there are two price ending effects level effects (those effects in which consumers may underestimate the price); and image effects (those effects in which consumers may infer meaning from the right-hand digits). In the study, ninety-three participants were recruited from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. All participants were given questionnaires to rate the quality and necessity-luxury of the good first; then a distraction session which used for distracting participants' attention from memorizing the prices of the goods; then a recall-test was given. Participants gave significantly different ratings for luxuries and necessities according to the different price-endings. In addition, the idea that the prices ending in 9 tend to be underestimated was also found.

Abstract:
The mobility of young people within the care system has been a cause for concern for many years. It has often been associated with a number of negative features in the lives of young people during their time in public care but also well into their adulthood. These include low educational achievements, drug and alcohol misuse, teenage pregnancy and social exclusion. However, little seems to be known about the causal relations between such features and care placement endings. A large body of research has been published on the matter of placement endings but it has often concentrated on isolated aspects of the service provided or on characteristics specific to young people. The project aimed at getting a better understanding of the way successive placement endings occur throughout the care career of individual children. A lifelong approach was chosen in order to reflect the premise that young people looked after are engaged in a dynamic process of adaptation to life in substitute care but also to life after trauma. A sample of 43 case files of young people who had been looked after in two local authorities was analysed with a mixed approach including both qualitative and quantitative methods. Three ideal types of care careers were identified and used as a base on which to create a causal model of placement ending. This model encompasses variables related to children’s early parenting experience, to their experience of trauma and to the placement context. The model reflects the dynamic nature of the relation between these three sets of variable.

Calloway, Jonathan. "Ending Structural Violence: A Rawlsian Approach to Liberation Theology." Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2011. https://dc.etsu.edu/honors/11.

Full text
Abstract:
Liberation theology has played an important role for overcoming structural violence. Originating in Latin America, the movement continues to expand throughout the developed and developing world. Marxism and liberation theology share similar philosophies – showing preferential option to the poor. While many Marxists may believe that a solution to structural violence is alienating violence through justified revolution, the chance of success is limited. Liberation is a process, not an event. This essay identifies an alternative to liberation: applying the teachings of John Rawls and applying the Suffering Servant model of Jesus Christ. When we apply the Veil of Ignorance and the Difference Principle to liberation theology, we can realistically implement a system of equity in juxtaposition to the goals of a Marxist.

Full text
Abstract:
Soon after the end of the Civil War, Lebanon witnessed the birth of its first audio-visual law: the Broadcasting Act of 1994. This Act was, according to the Document of National Reconciliation that ushered in the end of the Civil War, considered to be crucial in ending civil strife in Lebanon. The 1994 Act was also the first legislation for private broadcasting to be passed in the Arab world. The introduction of the Act created great political upheaval. The present study documents the controversy created by the Act and seeks to understand the extent to which vehement criticism of the Act and of the government behind it were justified. I will seek to do so by examining the various phases of the Act: its inception as a draft; its final wording and the economic and political forces that shaped it; and its implementation, mainly through the creation of a new regulatory body, the National Audio-visual Council (or NAC) responsible for studying license applications. The present study will document the various stages of the new broadcasting law by relying almost exclusively on primary sources: i.e., archival material, most of which is inaccessible to the general public (e.g., application files); and personal interviews with high ranking government officials and media representatives. Finally, by relying on elite theory and an "evolutionary" theory of policy analysis, I will attempt to interpret the findings of the primary research, and to add to our understanding of media, law, and change in post-Civil War Lebanon.

Abstract:
The thesis investigates the behavior of Spain’s persistently high unemployment rate. Rigid labor laws, unemployment insurance generosity, and the demographics of the unemployed are part of the cause, but they are only underlying factors driving the hysteresis that has been present for nearly four decades. The thesis attempts to extract explanations for this persistence by comparing Spain to other countries, such as its next-door neighbor, Portugal. Special attention is placed on the role that recessions and subsequent changes in real GDP growth play in sustaining a high rate of unemployment.

Edwards, Patrick. "An asymmetrical justification of deduction : ending the sceptical debate." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/32463.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to explore the possibility of answering the sceptic's demand for a non-dogmatic beliefs. In order to do justice to the sceptic's demand, we will first take time to carefully develop the strongest sceptical position possible. This will be done by considering a selection of sceptical positions dating from ancient Greece, through the early modern period, to the twentieth-century. We will use the law of non-contradiction both to lend structure to this historical taxonomy, and to act as a measure of sceptical rigour. It will be argued that Arcesilaus's scepticism marks the closest approximation of the sceptical ideal, yet, he, too, remains dogmatic to some extent. The twentieth-century discussion will focus on Susan Haack's investigation into the justification of deduction. It will be argued that her treatment of the justifications of deduction and induction as symmetrical is misguided: there is an asymmetry between the two justifications. Next, it will be shown that this asymmetry results from the permissibility of a circular justification of deduction. We will examine the implications of such a circular justification and how they relate to the sceptical debate. Ultimately, it will be shown that the sceptic's demand for justification without dogmatic beliefs is itself dogmatic and circular. Thus, it will be shown that the sceptic need not be answered for the plain fact that no such non-dogmatic sceptic could exist.<br>Arts, Faculty of<br>Philosophy, Department of<br>Graduate

Understanding the processes involved in therapy are crucial to maximising its benefits. It is hoped that this contribution to the research base will provide clinicians with practical recommendations based on empirical evidence and prompt future research to investigate these topics further. The first section of this thesis describes a metasynthesis of qualitative studies exploring the formation of the therapeutic relationship from the client’s perspective. Findings highlight clients’ initial assessment of therapist characteristics to see whether they fit with their perceived needs. Displays of openness and respect from the therapist were found to facilitate the formation of the relationship and allow for a deep connection between client and therapist to be established. The second section of this thesis presents a grounded theory study focusing on therapists’ experiences of ending therapy with clients. The theory explains the processes that play a significant role in the ending experience (therapist context, therapeutic approach, level of connectedness, level of investment and therapist’s perceived responsibility) and how they impact on different types of therapy endings. Elements of the therapy were found to continue beyond the final session as therapists described learning from each ending experience which served to influence their future work with clients. The third section of this thesis comprises personal reflections on the process of engaging in the thesis project. Specifically, this critical appraisal explores the difficulties experienced by the author in positioning herself within a consistent ontological and epistemological stance. The reflections offered in this section follow the developmental journey made by the author as a result of engaging in this project.

Shon, Frank. "Richard Rolle, election and the sense of an ending." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2003. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.288847.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to suggest a model of development for the writings of Richard Rolle, based on the hermit's application of the theological concept of election. The thesis falls into three parts, corresponding broadly to the early, middle and late phases of Rolle's career. Chapter One charts Rolle's attempts to define the credentials of the electi in terms of the contemplative life in the early Judica me Deus, and points to certain tensions in Rolle's approach to the pastoral manual form. Chapter Two examines Rolle's subsequent attempts in the Tractatus super Apocalypsim to clarify the relationship of the electi to the signs hidden in Scripture and in phenomena, and places this within the teleological framework of the Apocalypse. Chapter Three begins with the Canticum Amoris lyric and leads to the Super Canticum Canticorum, Rolle's Commentary on the Song of Songs, in an attempt to show the movement from the experimental Marian focus of the lyric to the explicit Christological emphasis of Rolle's middle period. By reference to Augustine and to Bernard of Clairvaux, the latter part of the chapter attempts to show the influence of the concept of election in this movement. Using the Contra Amatores Mundi treatise as a focus, Chapter Four examines Rolle's pervasive sense of the universal movement in which the contemplative life plays a pre-ordained part, and considers the ways in which this teleological analysis defines the experience of contemplation. Chapter Five returns to the Super Canticum Canticorum, and examines the stylistic manifestations of Rolle's belief in the predestined purpose and authority of his writings. With reference to Ciceronian and Augustinian principles of rhetoric, this chapter points to Rolle's growing sense of his own writings as possessing a performative, para-liturgical function. This movement reaches its fullest expression in the Melos Amoris, and this rhetorical development is related, in Chapter Six, to Rolle's increasing assurance of his status as an electus. Dealing with the final phase of the hermit's career, after 1343, Chapter Seven considers Rolle's Latin Emendatio Vitae and English writings, in an attempt to explain the apparent disappearance of the ideas and themes that have hitherto shaped Rolle's development; the latter part of the chapter argues that these have been incorporated within the famous `three degrees' of love

Yang, Jayhoon. "Other endings of Mark as responses to Mark : an ideological-critical investigation into the longer and the shorter ending of Mark's Gospel." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2004. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3555/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Longer Ending and the Shorter Ending of Mark's Gospel are the ancient Markan readers' responses to Mark's Gospel. This leads us to the question of how the authors of these endings read their Mark's Gospel. These endings reflect the ideologies of their authors. The ideologies are related to the interests of the author or the authorial community (ideological primary group), and are embedded within the text. The Longer and the Shorter Ending were produced within a social context where the matter of apostolic authoritative leadership was a sensitive issue. A potential conflict is found in many contemporary texts from the NT and the extra- canonical texts, especially with regard to the apostolic authority of Mary Magdalene and Peter. Their struggles for apostolic authority are often found in the post-Easter narrative context. The assumed ideological primary community of the Longer Ending is Pro- Magdalene. It acknowledged Mary Magdalene as its authoritative leader who enjoyed apostolic authority especially over Peter. This community was interested in mission, and re-authenticated the mission of the Eleven. The LE provides a certain guideline for the qualification of leadership in the LE's community, which is the visual experience of the resurrected Jesus. The assumed ideological primary community of the Shorter Ending is Pro- Petrine. It was in favour of Peter, and suggested him as holding authoritative apostolic authority. This community wanted to clarify the resurrection of Jesus, and emended the empty tomb narrative of Mark's Gospel. It was also interested in mission, and the authority of disciples, especially that of Peter, in their performing mission tasks is highlighted in the Shorter Ending.

Daniels, Lesley-Ann. "Buying peace: amnesty as a tool in ending civil wars." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/392137.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the use of amnesty as a tool for ending civil wars. The thesis is innovative in its focus on amnesties during civil wars and their impact on conflict termination. I examine the conditions under which governments grant amnesties, and the various mechanisms through which amnesty acts as an incentive to stop fighting. I then study how international laws and norms against impunity for atrocious crimes influences the use of amnesty. The thesis combines in-depth quantitative and qualitative analysis by using statistical analysis of all conflict episodes from 1975-2011, as well as an intensive study of the peace negotiations in Colombia. The thesis has a number of innovative findings. I show that governments are more likely to use amnesty as an instrument of war, and they use it to pick off weaker groups with whom it is easier to settle. Secondly, I find that amnesties are effective both as a direct incentive, but also because they give the government military advantages. Thirdly, I demonstrate that governments balance amnesty against other transitional justice measures to avoid giving political concessions. The thesis makes various contributions to different literatures. To the transitional justice literature, I bring a comprehensive study of amnesty during civil war, and empirical findings on its determinants and effectiveness. To the civil war literature, I bring a theory of amnesty as an incentive in conflict termination, and a model of the impact of legal intervention as an external action. Overall, this thesis offers both a comprehensive study and theoretical insights into the use of amnesty during civil war.<br>Aquesta tesis examina la utilització d’amnisties com a eines per a finalitzar guerres civils.

Sigurthorsson, David. "Global Rectificatory Justice : Repairing for Colonialism and Ending World Poverty." Thesis, Linköping University, Centre for Applied Ethics, 2006. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-6598.

Full text
Abstract:
<p>The current state of the global distribution of income, wealth, and well-being is in many respects the product of historical acts and processes. Of these, some have been just, others not. In philosophical discourse, processes of the latter kind are referred to as historical injustices. Of these historical injustices, the most protracted, extensive, and (presumably) the most devastating, is colonialism. For centuries, innocent people – in fact whole continents – were subjected to plunder, despoilment, land-displacement, exploitation, slavery, oppressive rule, cultural rape, and genocide. The extent and persistence of the consequences of this particular historical injustice are, however, contested territory. With regards to the exact causes of global poverty and destitution, measuring the effects of colonialism vis-à-vis other determining factors is an empirical impossibility. Nonetheless, it is beyond dispute that during colonial times vast amounts of riches were illicitly transferred from the colonies to their (mainly European) masters. It therefore seems reasonable to assume that this massive and prolonged one-directional transfer (from South to North) of wealth and resources necessary for nation-building, i.e. self-sustained and successful eco¬nomic development, has contributed, to a morally significant degree, to the unequal economic status of societies – resulting, ultimately, in the present unjust division of countries into developed, industrialized ones on the one hand, and under-developed (in many cases, extremely poor) ones, on the other. If this assumption is correct, then this is a problem of fantastic moral proportions.</p><p>The aim of this essay is to consider the moral implications of the consequences of colonialism in light of the problem of global poverty and against emergent, compelling theories of global justice. It is argued that the former colonies are justified in making reparative demands on their former colonial powers as a matter of rectificatory justice. The demands discussed here are aimed at property restoration and economic compensation. The salience of these demands is established by way of arguments for collective moral responsibility and historical (trans-generational) obligations. It is further argued that such reparations would constitute a great leap towards eradicating global poverty on the grounds that many presently poor countries were the victims of colonial atrocities. Such a leap would also take us closer to a just world.</p>

Abstract:
Detta sker i det så kallade privata meddelandet<br>Along with the rise of the Internet human interaction, communication and organisaiton have come to see new opportunities. In this study we will explore the fringes of the internet to explore a forum discussing thaimassage with sexual services also known as Happy Ending. Thanks to netnographic methods and sociological and criminological theory we will put the sex buyer in a social context. Extra focus is given to the first timer. The results of this study shows that criminal or deviant behavior can be learned from a forum online. In particular that the first time sexbuyer gets inspiration from and help to learn how to become a sexbuyer. Other results include the organisational setup surrounding the analyzed forum as well as a brief quantitative calculation on occurences of Happy Endings.

De, Cristofaro Diletta. "Beyond the sense of an ending: post-apocalyptic critical temporalities." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2015. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.715184.

Full text
Abstract:
Beyond the Sense of an Ending: Post-Apocalyptic Critical Temporalities argues that recent post-apocalyptic fictions written by non-science fiction authors subvert the apocalyptic understanding of time and history at the core of western modernity. In accord with the postmodern narrative turn in historiography, the novels expose the apocalyptic totalising teleology as a narrative construct deeply enmeshed with power structures. Emphasising the connection between apocalyptic End and narrative endings, the texts articulate critical temporalities through their narrative structures. Contemporary postapocalyptic fiction is beyond the apocalyptic “sense of an ending” (Kermode), for it critiques the epistemic primacy of the End - namely, its sense-making function - in history and conventional narratives alike. The chapters trace a trajectory from “antiapocalypse” (Quinby) to “counter-apocalypse” (Keller), that is, from novels which challenge apocalyptic history without acknowledging their dependence on apocalyptic discourse to novels which recognise this double bind through parody. After an analysis of Cormac McCarthy’s The Road (2006) and Jim Crace’s The Pesthouse (2007) as antiapocalyptic critiques of America’s ideological core, the thesis turns to David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas (2004) and Jeanette Winterson’s The Stone Gods (2007), focussing on their subversion of the deterministic teleology of apocalyptic history through plots which eschew linearity. Will Selfs The Book o f Dave (2006) and Sam Taylor’s The Island at the End o f the World (2009) are then discussed as counter-apocalypses which parody apocalyptic discourse as the self-referential construction of unhinged minds. Finally, the thesis foregrounds both negative and potentially constructive aspects of the postmodern critique of metanarratives through Douglas Coupland’s apocalyptic Girlfriend in a Coma (1998) and his counter-apocalyptic Player One (2010), respectively.

Data has been gained throughqualitative interviews with professionals from the above mentioned actors. Theinterviews show that sexual services are sold in Thai massage parlours in Malmö.The interviewees confirm that many of the women that work in Thai massageparlours live in especially vulnerable situations. A combination of dependency ontheir employer, on a Swedish husband and a lack of understanding of Swedishlaws and rights, have contributed to these women’s vulnerability. A fear of losingtheir residency is a factor that has increased their dependency. According toseveral interviewees, outreach work toward this group can become substantiallyimproved.

Abstract:
Persons with intellectual disability have been found to perform more poorly on tasks, demanding the use of executive functions like planning, than their peers. This study investigated difficulties with planning, and how problems with planning ability can be supported by using cognitive artifacts to help performance on activities in everyday life, for adolescents with intellectual disability. The approach taken is one of situated cognition, where the natural environment plays a big role, to see if the same difficulties arise as results from traditional research has shown. The traditional view focuses a lot on executive functions, and experimental studies in controlled settings and often suggests interventions and practice of certain functions to get better abilities. Another way is to focus on the use of cognitive artifact, to support problematic abilities, and to get a well-rounded understanding of how the problems actually appear in everyday life, the alternative view of situated cognition is a way to go. The data was gathered through interviews and surveys with the individual’s parents and analyzed through categorization and a repeated measures ANOVA, with a bonferroni corrected post hoc test. Results show several problematic areas, and that there is a difference in how problematic these areas are estimated to be when it comes to planning in everyday situations. It is discussed how the natural contexts helps knowing what planning really means for the group, as well as how it can help finding properties in cognitive artifacts that can help raise the level of independence in planning related tasks.

Abstract:
Many regard the last five chapters of the book of Judges (chs. 17-21) as problematic and out of place in the overall context of the book. Various theories have emerged to explain how the narratives in these chapters made their way into the book of Judges. The 1970s and 1980s saw a shift in the academic discipline of biblical studies toward synchronic or literary approaches to biblical interpretation. Although this literary tum has had a significant impact on the interpretation of Judges, questions regarding the place and function of chs. 17-21 still remain. Leveraging work from literary studies and hermeneutics, this dissertation re-examines Judges 17- 21 with the aim of uncovering the strategies of ending which are at work in these chapters. This dissertation identifies a number of strategies of ending in Judges 17-21 including the strategy of circularity, the strategy of completion and the strategy of entrapment. Moreover, the temporal configuration of Judges and particularly the nonlinear chronology which chapters 17-21 expose receive due attention. All of this offers fresh insights into the place and function of chs. 17-21 in the context of the whole book.

Abstract:
The world around us is shrinking and globalization and capitalism are processes affecting the world. Global trends, like outsourcing and relocation of firms to low-cost countries, have become more common. This creates a huge vulnerability in the municipalities that today are concentrated around a single large company. One of these is Olofström which today is one of the most vulnerable municipalities in Sweden and whose survival today lies in the hand of the company ‘Volvo Cars Corporation’. In the fight for survival, the municipality of Olofström puts up strategies to work around its dependence on the engineering industry. There is an incentive to find ways to stop the depopulation which is occurring and affecting the municipality negatively. The commerce of the municipality is also being supported in all possible ways. My purpose with this paper was to identify the problems that exist in the municipality of Olofström whose survival revolves around Volvo Cars. I have shown the effects of this dependence. It has also been in my intention to identify potential clusters and collaborations that can be found in the municipality. The purpose was operationalized by four main research questions: ü  Which survival strategies can be identified in the municipality of Olofström? ü  Which networks and collaborations can be detected? ü  Which dispersion effects are created by the engineering industry? ü   How is Olofström affected by global trends? I have chosen to use a qualitative research approach when conducting my study. I have also chosen to conduct qualitative interviews which have given me the data to answer parts of my research questions. In my theoretic approach I strategically selected the concepts and theories most applicable to my purpose. Therefore, I chose to focus on theories regarding globalization, capitalism, regionalism, regional innovation systems and regional clusters. In my research I have chosen to go from the general to the concrete and to interlace the two in my analysis. Through my analysis I have come to the conclusion that a concentration around a company can bring both positive and negative outcomes in space. Clusters can act as a survival strategy but can also have negative outcomes for the municipality’s fight for survival.

Abstract:
Concussion diagnoses in sport have been increasing steadily over the past two decades. In North America, the prevalence of concussions in professional sports such as football and ice hockey have recently garnered increased media attention and research due primarily to the serious short and long-term health implications. Commonly reported physical symptoms include headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light and sound. Concussed individuals also suffer psychological symptoms such as isolation, anxiety, and depression. In some cases, the combination of physical and psychological symptoms has led to career termination and personal distress. The purpose of this study was to understand the effects of career ending concussions on former National Hockey League (NHL) players. Five participants were interviewed for the current study, and data was analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) (Smith, Flowers, &amp; Larkin, 2009). Results revealed four higher order categories: (a) Concussion Experiences which described participants' physical and psychological symptoms from their concussions, (b) Environmental Influences which discussed relationships with key individuals and organizations throughout their careers, (c) Professional Sport Transition which described participants' career termination, as well as the transition to their post athletic lives, and (d) Education and Recommendations which included participants' insights that were grouped into concussion education and recommendations to improve player safety. These results indicated that physical and psychological symptoms of concussions caused participants challenges in their professional careers, their personal relationships, and with their quality of life. The current results represent the first empirical account of professional athletes who have talked about their experiences with a career ending concussion. These findings are of interest to medical professionals, sport psychology practitioners, coaches, parents, and athletes to gain a more thorough understanding of concussions. In addition, the current study expands career termination literature by including the experiences of professional athletes. Through the use of retrospective interviews, this study presented athletes' experiences with short and long-term effects of concussions which in turn enhanced the overall understanding of concussive injury.<br>Les diagnostics de commotions cérébrales dans le sport n'ont cessé d'augmenter de façon constante depuis les deux dernières décennies.

Abstract:
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited<br>This thesis investigates gaps in the credible fear process within the asylum context and provides recommendations for improving the process. As the number of individuals who file credible fear and asylum applications rises, the specter of individuals filing meritless applications increases. Applications for protection filed by criminals, terrorists, and opportunists threaten U.S. national security and public safety, and weaken the integrity of the nation’s asylum system. This thesis explores how the flaws in the asylum and credible fear process should be addressed to minimize fraud and abuse in the system. The findings of this thesis are that frivolous applications are being filed, and that criminals and terrorists are gaming the system. The research also concludes that current safeguards insufficiently protect the nation after an individual’s asylum approval. The author recommends the formation of an Asylum Review Board to provide additional layers of protection after an individual’s asylum claim is approved.

Abstract:
The general aim of the present research project was to reflect on the measurement of values in the field of psychosocial sciences. According to Schwartz’s Theory, values are defined as desirable and trans-situational goals that serve as guiding principles in people's life to select modes, means, and actions. They have been mainly investigated using self-report instruments to gather quantitative data. However, respondents’ answers on these measures may be influenced by different response biases, such as for example socially desirable responding, or may depend on respondents’ tendency to introspection. This is mainly because values are by definition what is desirable, and they are abstract concepts. Based on this Chapters 1 and 2 theoretically and empirically deal with the available self-report measures of values and with the possible biases which are likely to influence respondents’ answers. Chapters 3 to 6 consider instead a recent trend in the field of values measurement, which is the possibility of studying values adopting an implicit social cognition perspective, that is using indirect measures to gain knowledge on the topic. Two indirect measures aimed at measuring values, namely the Values Implicit Association Test and the Values Lexical Decision Task, are here developed and considered in terms of their relations with self-report measures of values and with behavioural outcomes.

Abstract:
The ability of banks to implement regulations is important in several aspects. From the Finance Inspection ́s Point of view a successful implementation is important to protect the financial system and the consumers. For the banks it is important from a cost-benefit perspective, but also to keep customers satisfied and to maintain the right to continue banking. In spite of the advantages of successful implementation, the research in this area is limited. The aim of the study is therefore to explain how banks can implement new regulations. To fulfil the aim of the study we have adopted a qualitative view. Two case studies have been made in which empirics has been collected through eight semi-structured interviews. The respondents were bank employees who had been highly involved in the implementation of MiFID II and MiFIR. The empirics were thereafter analyzed with guidance from the theoretical frame of reference. The conclusion of the study is that the banks implementation of regulations is influenced by different factors: the cooperation between banks, the aim of the bank, the corporation culture, and the structure of the organization. The analyze has been used as a start point to create a model for how banks implement regulations. Implementation can be divided into interpretation and introduction. A major challenge is to translate the regulations and integrate them into the business activity. In order to make the employee practice the regulations, different steering mechanisms are used, for example education, information and monitoring.<br>Bankers förmåga att implementera regelverk kan utifrån flera perspektiv anses viktigt.

Twenty-six participants read ten paragraphs and described four pictures using verbs in the past tense. The activities were audio recorded at the language laboratory at UFSC and the target words phonetically transcribed. The results that followed the expected tendencies were related to the influence of (a) the preceding consonantal context, which induced more epenthesis than the preceding vocalic context; (b) manner of articulation, in which obstruents induced more epenthesis than sonorants, which induced more epenthesis then vowels and nasals, which induced more epenthesis than liquids; (c) length in which the more marked three-member clusters induced more epenthesis than the less marked two-member clusters; and, (d) orthography, which influenced epenthesis in -ed ending words and no epenthesis in contrastive words. Results that did not follow the predictions were related to the influence of (a) voicing, in which voiced obstruents induced less epenthesis production than voiceless obstruents; (b) manner of articulation, in which affricates induced more epenthesis than stops and fricatives, but stops induced more epenthesis than fricatives; (c) place of place of articulation, in which the voiced velar stop caused less epenthesis production than the voiced bilabial; and, (d) the free speech test, in which vowel epenthesis production was less frequent than in the reading test. Markedness in terms of preceding context and cluster length and sonority/consonant strength in terms of voicing and manner of articulation seem to influence epenthesis production in -ed endings as, well as orthography, which is reinforced by the lower rate of epenthesis production in the free speech test, whereas place of articulation seems not to influence this process.
