Abstract:
This study assessed the diagnostic performance of five field tests for ketosis in the blood, milk and urine in dairy cows. Samples were collected simultaneously from 102 dairy cows to determine the accuracy of the test results. The concentration of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) in the blood was measured quantitatively by using a portable ketone test kit. The milk and urine samples were analysed semi-quantitatively using different commercial test kits and urine sticks. The animals were categorised into a subclinical ketosis (SCK) and clinical ketosis (CK) group based on the BHBA concentration in the blood. The diagnostic performance of the milk and urine test kits was compared with the blood test kit. In the blood test, out of 102 cows, 27 and 19 cows were diagnosed with SCK and CK, respectively. The percentage agreement (kappa value) for the three different milk tests and the urine test kit was 43% (κ = −0.181), 72% (κ = 0.243), 63% (κ = 0.065) and 64% (κ = 0.163), respectively, for the SCK detection, which indicates lower sensitivity. However, a strong agreement with 88% (κ = 0.612), 85% (κ = 0.505), 86% (κ = 0.528) and 91% (κ = 0.753) was observed in the three milk tests and the urine test, respectively, for the CK diagnosis, showing a higher sensitivity. For the diagnosis of the SCK and CK, all the tested kits are generally applicable for the detection of CK in dairy cattle, but caution is needed during the interpretation of the SCK data due to the low sensitivity of the milk and urine tests for the SCK detection. Furthermore, this study suggests that milk and urine samples can be used as alternatives for the diagnosis of CK in replacement of blood tests.

Full text
Abstract:
Pavement surface–tire friction is a critical safety element associated with roadway design, construction, and maintenance practices. The skid resistance of pavements generally declines over time and increases the risk of skidding-related crashes. On horizontal curves, lateral friction may be associated with lane-departure incidents, particularly as the pavement ages and drivers demand more lateral friction than the pavement surface–tire interaction can supply. On tangent roadway sections, longitudinal friction affects braking distances. As the skid-resistance properties of a pavement surface decline over time, braking distances increase, and may increase risks to driver safety. A comprehensive understanding of the process of pavement friction degradation could help highway agencies identify roadway segments that need maintenance to reduce the probability of skid-related incidents. This paper presents a survival analysis of friction degradation for asphalt pavement surfaces. Duration models were estimated with data collected annually along an Interstate highway in Pennsylvania to investigate the degradation of friction over time. These models consider traffic volume and roadway features to determine the probability that friction levels will remain above various friction thresholds. The resulting statistical models can help transportation agencies make better decisions about pavement maintenance to reduce safety risk.

Abstract Three-year-old-field grown hemlocks (Tsuga canadensis) and 3-year-old Rhododendron ‘Nova Zembla’ were observed for foliar injury after applications of insecticides in a commercial nursery. The treated plants were located in Bloomfield, CT growing in a sandy loam with a pH of 5.7 at treatment time. Insecticides were applied on 30 Jul or 31 Aug, or on both dates. Each plot consisted of 3 plants in a row with 2 plants between plots, and plots were separated by a single buffer row. Treatments were replicated 3 times in a randomized block. Insecticides were applied individually to each plant; the liquid formulations were mixed with 8 oz of water to facilitate disbursal of the chemical, and the granules were scattered at the drip line of each plant and then washed into the soil with 8 oz of water.

A study was conducted to determine the efficacy of a benzimidazole anthelmintic (fenbendazole) on horse farms in Slovakia. Nine stud farms with a total number of 80 horses were selected for the faecal egg count reduction (FECR) test. Resistance was assumed if egg count reduction was less than 90%. A low level of benzimidazole resistance was found on three farms (84.4–89.0%). On the remaining farms the results of the FECR test indicated substantial reduction in faecal egg output after treatment (92.5–99.4%). Larval identification before treatment revealed Cyathostominea larvae as being predominant.

Abstract:
By embedding water content sensors and pore water pressure sensors inside the red clay slope on-site in Guiyang, Guizhou, shear tests were performed on soil samples at different depths of the slope under different weather. The changes of water content, pore water pressure, and shear strength index of the slope inside the slope under the influence of the atmosphere were tracked and tested, and the failure characteristics and evolution of the red clay slope were analyzed. It is believed that the depth of influence of the atmosphere on red clay slopes is about 0.7 m, rainfall is the most direct climatic factor leading to the instability of red clay slopes, and the evaporation effect is an important prerequisite for the catastrophe of red clay slopes. The cohesion and internal friction angle of the slope soil have a good binary quadratic function relationship with the water content and density. The water content and density can be used to calculate the cohesion and internal friction angle. Failure characteristics of red clay slopes: the overall instability failure is less, mainly surface failure represented by gullies and weathering and spalling, and then gradually evolved into shallow instability failure represented by collapse and slump. The damage evolution law is as follows: splash corrosion and surface corrosion stage⟶ fracture development stage⟶ gully formation stage⟶ gully development through stage⟶ local collapse stage⟶ slope foot collapse stage.

Abstract:
This paper presents three static load tests of composite foundation incorporating flexible piles, rigid piles and different cushion materials to clarify the load-displacement behavior of composite foundation. The results of static load tests indicate that the cushion made of stone and sand is not suitable because of a large pile penetration. As far as the influence of cushion material is concerned, the cushion made of sand, gravel and rubble with the maximum particle size of less than 20 mm and grouted with cement slurry can be used to fully mobilize the bearing capacity of each part of composite foundation, and modify the load transfer mechanism of the piles. Moreover, this type of cushion can reduce the overall settlement and ensure the uniform settlement of building.

Abstract:
Coal rock is rarely used as the foundation bearing strata. For buildings located on coal rock, it is a reasonable and feasible way to obtain the vertical bearing characteristics of coal rock through field tests. Three plate load tests and two bi-directional load tests were carried out, and the design parameters of the vertical bearing capacity of the shallow foundation and the deep foundation were obtained, respectively. The plate load test results show that the pressure–settlement curve of coal rock is a steep-drop-type, and the deformation modulus decreases with the increase of the pressure. The bi-directional load test results show that the unit tip resistance-displacement curve of coal rock is a steep-drop-type, and the load transfer function of the unit tip resistance is an ideal elastic–plastic curve, and the displacement value corresponding to the ultimate bearing capacity is about 1% of the pile diameter. The load transfer function of the unit side resistance of coal rock is a hyperbolic curve. The equivalent pile top load–settlement curve obtained according to the load transfer functions of the unit tip resistance and the unit side resistance is consistent with the equivalent conversion results of the bi-directional load test method.

In order to understand the dynamic stress diffusion rule of the waste iron slag (sand soil) during dynamic consolidation, we conducted a large field test. The propagation and attenuation of dynamic stress in each ramming strike was recorded through the resistance strain gauge. It was shown that the dynamic stress caused by dynamic consolidation is pretty obvious. The dynamic stress dissipates extremely fast during the dynamic consolidation, the time is only 0.5s after plus the aftermath. The soil dynamic stress has heart-shaped distribution during the compaction. The dynamic stress value increases with the tamping hit number, but it keeps stable after about the third hits.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Introduction: The 100-meter dash (100 m) event holds particular appeal. Coaches and researchers seek to understand the determinants of performance in this task. Although information has been produced over the years, it is not fully applied by coaches who generally assess the success of employed training methods through objective field tests, such as 60 m dash test performance. Objective: Investigate 100 m performance based on 60 m performance. Methods: Two hundred and forty six men and 153 women divided into two subgroups were evaluated for estimation (Fvalidation; n=123 and Mvalidation; n=204) and validation of predictive models (Fcross-validation; n=30 and Mcross-validation; n=42) for 100 m dash performance (time take to cover 100 m). Partial time was measured based on the 100 m distance marked previously every 10 meters from the starting line on both sides of the track. The predictive models were based on the interval in the 60 meters with a time interval of 10-10 m. Results: Magnitude of correlation was very high. High coefficients of determination and differences of no statistical significance (p <.001) were found between the criteria and predicted values. The predictive equations presented constant error values below 0.001s; total absolute error of 0.12s; 0.10s for Mvalidation and Fvalidation, respectively, and 1.13% and 0.85% of total relative error for Mvalidation and Fvalidation, respectively. Bland-Altman analysis showed an increase in the level of concordance between the criteria and predicted values of Fvalidation and Mvalidation. Similar responses were found when the proposed models were applied to Fcross-validation and Mcross-validation. Conclusion: The estimation models were able to accurately predict 100 m performance based on 60 m performance. Level of evidence: II; Diagnostic studies - Investigating a diagnostic test.
