Versification describes the marriage of language and poetic form through which poetry is produced. Formal principles, such as metre, alliteration, rhyme, or parallelism, take precedence over syntax and prosody, resulting in expressions becoming organised as verse rather than prose. The aesthetic appeal of poetry is often linked to the potential for this process to seem mysterious or almost magical, not to mention the interplay of particular expressions with forms and expectations. The dynamics of versification thus draw a general interest for everyone, from enthusiasts of poetry or forms of ve

One of the subjects of functional analysis is classification of Banach spaces depending on various properties of the unit ball. The need of such considerations comes from a number of applications to problems of mathematical analysis. The list of subjects contains: differential calculus in normed spaces, approximation theory, weak topologies and reflexivity, general theory of convexity and convex functions, metric fixed point theory, and others. The aim of this book is to present basic facts from this field. It is addressed to advanced undergraduate and graduate students interested in the subje

This chapter examines various estimates of the fitness of an individual, focusing on statistical issues and potential sources of bias. With estimates of individual fitness in hand, one can then search for fitness-trait association, and this topic comprises the second half of the chapter. A number of metrics for describing how the phenotypic distribution of a trait is perturbed by selection are examined, again along with a discussion of statistical issues and sources of bias.

This chapter traces Dryden’s responses to the development of the Restoration Pindaric ode. In Renaissance Europe, Pindar’s Greek odes were commonly seen as examples of inspired poetry. Abraham Cowley’s vernacular odes echoed and modified this tradition by presenting irregular Pindaric metre and form as a vehicle for paraphrasing biblical scripture. The chapter sees how Dryden thought through this link between inspiration and the Pindaric in odes including ‘To the Memory of Anne Killigrew’ and ‘An Ode for Secelia’s Day’. Prosodic weight plays a central role in metrical systems, including stress, poetic meter, prosodic word minimality, and prosodic end-weight. In each, constraints regulate the interaction of weight and phonological strength. For example, in English, increasingly heavy syllables are increasingly likely to attract stress. Depending on the language and system, weight can be binary (heavy vs. light), higher n-ary (ternary, etc., but still categorical), or gradient (continuous on a ratio scale). Gradient weight is widely attested in stress, meter, and end-weight. The book emphasizes the typology and

Substantial discussion is also given to the texts about life suffering that Brahms chose for most of his sacred choral compositions. The Requiem is discussed in terms of its long gestation, unification through use of musical motifs, and balanced and mirror structures. Performance practice issues include timbre and vibrato

This central chapter presents a general principle that will be used as a guide throughout the second part of the book. Specifically, the text introduces the reader to the information integration theory (IIT) of consciousness in a rather light and accessible way. First, simple thought experiments highlight that consciousness, as we all experience it, is at once highly informative and highly integrated. Then, these basic phenomenological axioms are translated into postulates about the physical world: a system is conscious to the extent that it can integrate information. Finally, the general prin

The importance of chronic illness has brought a new focus on patient-reported outcomes of clinical care. Health-Related Qualify of Life (HRQL) is a new goal for clinical care that combines a physician’s view of health as an objective biological fact and the patient’s view of health as a subjective experiential state. The diagnosis of an impersonal and objective disease separable from the patient arose after the French Revolution and helped to delimit the new right to health care. But objective mortality and morbidity metrics are not adequate for capturing the burden of chronic illness. HRQL wa

Abstract This project contributes to the fields of lyric poetry and poetics (especially poetic form), aesthetics, and German literature by intervening in debates on the social functions, cognitive and emotional effects, and value of poetry. It builds on and moves beyond previous theories of rhythm to tie meter more particularly to the specificities of poetic language in blending of embodied responses, cultural situations, and linguistic particularities. The project examines the German-language tradition across three centuries, arguing that the interdisciplinarity and richness of metrical theor

Two Germanic languages, English and Swedish, are compared to highlight the implications of so-called nested foci and Second Occurrence Focus (SOF) with respect to how the metrical grid and the prosodic hierarchy interact in phonology. Orbits are ubiquitous in the universe: moons orbit planets, planets orbit stars, stars orbit around the center of the Milky Way galaxy, and so on. Any theory of gravity will have to explain the properties of all these orbits. To pave the way for developing the metric theory of gravity (general relativity) this chapter examines the basics of orbits as observed and as explained by the Newtonian model of gravity. We can use our understanding of gravity to infer the masses and other properties of these cosmic systems. Te chapter concludes with four optional sections in this spirit, covering the sl

At any given event gravity accelerates all particles equally—yet gravity is very strong in some places and very weak in others. In this chapter, we learn a powerful thinking tool to help us deal with these variations: the gravitational potential. The potential takes the concept of “acceleration times height” that, we previously found, determines the march of time and generalizes it to cases where the gravitational acceleration varies with position. The potential encodes global relationships, such as the gravitational redshift of light emitted from one point and received by a distant observer,

First, it confronts the theme of a formality-informality binary in urbanism, which the findings significantly complicate, positing social legitimacy as the better term for understanding the success or acceptability of an urban space intervention. The chapter describes how some of the problems with DIY urbanism—and many forms of urban placemaking—can be addressed through the operationalizing of legitimacy as a democratic, community-based metric of va
