Abstract:
The sculptural environments I create immerse the viewer in a decrepit vaudevillian past. The sculptures allude to narratives within Community Theater as well as the Drag Show. Making becomes an act; manipulating materials such as synthetic hair and paint are associated with the guise of the makeup artist. Frantic rehearsal logic prevails as a dress is repurposed into a male giant's costume and window blinds are used to construct a boat's deck. This collusion asks the viewer to transgress the boundary of the stage, becoming a voyeur privileged to the world of exiled props and role reversal.

Yates, Benjamin. "One hundred years of band tradition at Luther College." Diss., University of Iowa, 2016. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/3226.

Full text
Abstract:
The Luther College Concert Band has enjoyed nearly 150 years of success. International tours, regional tours, concerts, service to the college and recording projects aided the success of this small college band that retained its Lutheran, liberal arts identity. Published documents exist about the Luther College band before 1948 but no comprehensive published documents are available after that time. This essay provides a more complete history of the band since 1948 based upon archival research and interviews with Weston Noble, Fredrick Nyline and Joan deAlbuquerque. The Concert Band started as a student led activity, which set it apart from other university bands of the late nineteenth century that had military connections. The Luther band eventually became an academic area of study and performed solely for campus concerts and on tours. The band took tours to Norway and Europe long before most college bands had touring programs. Later the band toured to Japan, China and Europe and continued regional tours throughout the United States. The Concert Band conductors, particularly the tenures of Carlo Sperati, Weston Noble, Frederick Nyline and Joan deAlbuquerque, helped shape the band program and music department at Luther College. This is a study of their educational philosophies that shaped the band, and the support the program received from the college administration, students and alumni. Also included is information about the Dorian Band Festival hosted by Luther College, works commissioned by the band, a review of works programed by conductors, a listing of recordings by the Luther College Concert Band and biographical information about each conductor.

Curry, Curtis. "One hundred years of servitude : the Colombian labor movement 1848-1948." FIU Digital Commons, 1992. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/2699.

Full text
Abstract:
The current study seeks not only to place into focus the general patterns of social and economic organization prevalent in Colombia in the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth (such political and economic organization has been ably illustrated by several authors), but also strives to elucidate the systems of thought or 'ideologies' to which such socio-economic and political structures gave rise. It is concerned with the thought-systems that influenced the development of the Colombian labor movement, those of actors external to organized labor and indigenous systems of thought of labor activists themselves. The hypothesis is that class and party-based interests channelled the early development of organized labor toward a path that would further, or failing that, not conflict with dominant elite interests. Artisans, proudly independent, exerted inordinate influence over the movement, hindering the development of working class consciousness. As the result of dominance by élites external to the labor movement itself, workers were never able to forge an independent voice that would allow them to define their own interests in society.

The international literary genre better known as Magical Realism had on Gabriel García Márquez’s laureate book One Hundred Years of Solitude one of its major inspirations. The movement of Boom boosted the original recognition of Latin American’s authors during the 1960s and 1970s sparking a world-scale debate about the existence of whether or not a mythical or legendary reality goes beyond the strict reality of West. Aside this acknowledgment, the view around One Hundred Years of Solitude became affiliated to a metaphorical representation of Colombia and Latin American culture and history. This dissertation intends to question the link between nation and inter-national through this literary symbol of twentieth century. Therefore, an intersection will be made between literature, modernity and post-coloniality. With Gabriel García Márquez’s local utterances my aim is to question the normalized values of authority and signification easily assumed and simultaneously produced by modernization theory and Eurocentric remnants, mainly International Relations epistemology. To this purpose I take an out of joint account of time and space allied with a poetics of solitude to enable a displacement of the boundaries that split the magical and the real.

The realities of the built past and the palimpsest-ic nature of activities on the African mining landscape is under critique. On a site where nature gives way to the man-made activity of platinum ore excavation and mineral extraction, the activity of mining essentially creates infrastructures of dust and filthy landscapes. Inserting a new architecture within this obliterated savannah landscape allows for a process of reclamation to take place. This project uses an abandoned mine site in Southern Africa and focuses on the environmental mitigation and civic development of the site adjacent to the existing mining town of 40,000 inhabitants. The derelict mineshafts serve as infrastructure for a new civic space of scenic agrarian routes and programmed enclosures: auction floors, warehouses, residential short-stay rooms, water purification systems, mineral baths, crop rotational schemes, research labs and a museum space.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the coexistence of time in Gabriel Garcfa Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude as a cause of the supernatural events, the hereditary memory, and the solitude and to examine the effects of this mythical time frame on character development, plot, narrative structure, and theme. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the parchments as creators of mythical time. The second, third, and fourth chapters investigate the effects of this unconventional time. Supernatural events, clairvoyance, and solitude are all examined as effects. The final chapter correlates the writing of the parchments with the writing of the novel and explains the effects of unconventional time on the reader. Thus, this thesis illustrates how the coexistence of time functions of two levels: the level of the parchments and the level of the novel.

Full text
Abstract:
The synthesis route for the preparation of polyurethane using 100% sustainable materials was proposed. Lignin, one of the most abundance biomass on Earth, was used as one raw material, while the other one used is soybean oil. The reaction occurs in 3 steps, and is done in 2 different pot reactions. Briefly, purchased epoxidized soybean oil is carbonated to synthesize carbonated soybean oil. Then carbonated soybean oil was reacted with coupling agent, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane to produce urethane monomers. Finally, prepared urethane monomers were polymerized with lignin to produce sustainable polyurethane. Molecular structures were intensively analyzed using Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy. In addition, mechanical properties of prepared polyurethane were analyzed in order to evaluate its performance and compare with the polyurethanes available commercially. Our results indicated that the highest tensile strength achieved was 1.4 MPa, which is slightly below the typical tensile strengths of processible polyurethane. Chemical properties of all the intermediates and products and implications for future research are discussed.

Mutation detection within the human genome is becoming an increasingly important field today. It is possible that with a correlation between diseases and the mutations that cause them, new therapeutic treatments could be developed against many of today's common diseases In order to accomplish mutation detection, 1012 gene segments may be needed, requiring a significant increase in current technologies An instrument termed an Ultra-high throughput mutational spectrometer (UTMS) uses a process known as constant denaturing capillary electrophoresis (CDCE) to detect mutations in 10,000 capillaries simultaneously. The UTMS is at a 100-capillary proof of concept stage to successfully perform CDCE. In order for this stage to be successful, multiple subsystems of the device must work in unison, including thermal control, optical detection, electrical and fluidic connectivity. In this thesis, multiple devices were created to work in conjunction with previously existing instruments, including a passively aligned 100-port buffer reservoir and DNA injection loading plate. These devices were used to perform electrophoresis on DNA fluorescent primers in order to test the functionality of the UTMS 100-stage concept.
(cont.) A procedure for performing these experiments was developed in order to minimize risk and maximize chance of success. Successful isolation of individual signal detection was accomplished through the use of these procedures and devices, proving the 100-capillary proof of concept may reliably and repeatedly perform CDCE on the UTMS.

Abstract:
The geographical landscape has always been attractive to everyone because there you can express the human curiosity to know the surrounding world. The ways to present or to describe these landscapes fill the literature books and, in the Peruvian case, there are the works of all writers to a major or minor degree. Thus, at the beginning of the 20th century it is notable the figure of the historian José de la Riva-Agüero y Osma, himself an aristocrat from Lima who made an heroic travel from Cusco to Ocopa, Huancayo, at a time when there were not roads, making the trip on mule back. Here we present a brief description of an experience made in October, 2012, where we look to capture some of Riva-Agüero’s impressions that could have marked his vision about the life conditions of the high mountain people of the Andes, which may have changed his political view of them.

Smeds, Fredrik. "Adjective Comparison in Contemporary British English : A Corpus Study of More than One Hundred Adjectives." Thesis, Karlstad University, Faculty of Arts and Education, 2007. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kau:diva-933.

Full text
Abstract:

There are mainly two ways of comparing adjectives in English: the analytic and the synthetic. The analytic way is to use more and most (for example difficult, more difficult, most difficult). The synthetic, or inflectional, way is to add the endings –er and –est (for instance fast, faster, fastest). During the last twelve centuries the way of forming comparisons in English has evolved from predominately synthetic to the point where both inflections and analytic forms are used. Today many adjectives are almost always compared either synthetically or analytically (e.g. fast and difficult respectively), but sometimes we have two alternatives; for example, we can choose between more polite and politer. The author has three aims with this paper: firstly, to examine how adjectives in English are compared today; secondly, to determine how well the descriptions in modern grammars agree with authentic written English; thirdly, to see whether there have been any recent changes in the way of indicating comparison. This is a quantitative study. A corpus investigation was undertaken: some one hundred common adjectives in two British newspapers, The Guardian and The Observer, from 1990–91 and 2005 that vary in their way of expressing comparison were studied. The results were compared with six grammars from the last five decades. After the data collection, the chi square test was applied, showing how statistically significant the changes between 1990–91 and 2005 are. Judging from the data in this study, the synthetic comparison seems to be becoming less common. The author also concludes that the comparison of adjectives in contemporary British English varies considerably.

Jennings, William. "One Hundred Years of Slavery: A Sociohistorical and Demographic Study of the Origins of Cayenne Creole." Thesis, University of Auckland, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/911.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis takes a new approach to the study of the genesis of the lexically-French based Cayenne Creole, which emerged in French Guiana around the beginning of the eighteenth century. The study begins with an an overview of theories of creole genesis that describes the various schools of thought, notably the diffusionist, superstratist, substratist and universalist positions. Part 2 of the thesis examines the social history of Cayenne from 1650 to 1750. It provides information about the various early settlements of Cayenne Island, particularly the Dutch and Portugese Jewish establishment from 1654 to 1664 that saw the beginning of large-scale African enslavement in the colony. The development of the slave community in the context of the French colony is examined in detail, particularly with respect to the conditions of the slaves and their origins. Part 3 deals with the demography of Cayenne from 1650 to 1750. It features a detailed analysis of colonial censuses during this time, and looks at the 1690 slave list of Goupy des Marets in great detail. The origin of the slave ships to Cayenne is also discussed. Finally, Part 4 draws on the information provided in the social history and demography to suggest a model for the genesis of Cayenne Creole. The validity of this model will be tested in future linguistic studies of Cayenne Creole.

Motivated by the lack of scholarship surrounding female characters in Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, I sought to examine the distinct identities of four female characters. The collapse of dualities and embodiment of hybridity in Ursula, Pilar Ternera, Amaranta, and the Remedios women reveals the hegemonic power structures that are disrupted by these empowered women. The exploration of these women and their relationships to gendered dichotomies points to the potential of their identities in enacting colonial resistance and reclaiming traditional cultural heritage.

Abstract:
We describe the execution and data reduction of the European Southern Observatory Large Programme "Quasars and their absorption lines: a legacy survey of the high-redshift Universe with VLT/X-shooter" (hereafter "XQ-100"). XQ-100 has produced and made publicly available a homogeneous and high-quality sample of echelle spectra of 100 quasars (QSOs) at redshifts z similar or equal to 3.5-4.5 observed with full spectral coverage from 315 to 2500 nm at a resolving power ranging from R similar to 4000 to 7000, depending on wavelength. The median signal-to-noise ratios are 33, 25 and 43, as measured at rest-frame wavelengths 1700, 3000 and 3600 angstrom, respectively. This paper provides future users of XQ-100 data with the basic statistics of the survey, along with details of target selection, data acquisition and data reduction. The paper accompanies the public release of all data products, including 100 reduced spectra. XQ-100 is the largest spectroscopic survey to date of high-redshift QSOs with simultaneous rest-frame UV/optical coverage, and as such enables a wide range of extragalactic research, from cosmology and galaxy evolution to AGN astrophysics.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the meaning of unity and unification in post-war Italian life through a transnational study of the two great events staged for the celebration of one hundred years of Italian unification: Italia '61 and the Festival of Italy. Held in Turin, Italia '61 was the Italian national celebration and the overall purpose was to put on display the 'progress made in Italy in 100 years of national life' and to make a statement about Italy's place in the Cold War world order. To do so it comprised three major components: a Historical Exhibition, which traced a history of unification focused on the Risorgimento and the Resistance; a Regional Exhibition; and the International Labour Exhibition, which contained displays on work practices and conditions from twenty-one nations and international organisations. Across the Atlantic in Philadelphia, the Festival of Italy was the largest Italian centennial commemoration held outside Italy and it had been planned in conjunction with the Italia '61 organisers and collaboratively with the Italian American community in Philadelphia. The Festival's theme was 'lOO years of Progress' and the corresponding exhibitions and events emphasised the cultural richness of Italy, the high culture of Italy, the contribution of Italy and Italian culture and people to contemporary civilisation and in particular to the U.5., and the modernity of contemporary Italy. This thesis presents the argument that 1961 represents a change or turning point in the way identity was celebrated and so conceived in both Italy and among Italian American communities. The effects of the reconfiguration are identified through analysis of the national, international, intergovernmental, ethnic and transnational relationships in operation at Italia '61 and the Festival of Italy.

Abstract:
The book Paegŭi Kŭrimja (One Hundred Shadows) written by Hwang Jungeun (Hwang Jŏngŭn) was published in 2010 and translated by Jung Yewon (Chŏng Yewŏn) in 2016 after its success throughout South Korea.  It does not yet exist an official translation in Swedish and therefore, in order to make a comparative analysis about the differences in translation between Korean, English and Swedish, which is the author of the present thesis’ native language, the author have translated a part of the book (pages 1-40) during a course in Korean literature translation into Swedish. This thesis will be specifically focused on how the Korean onomatopoeias in the book have been changed through translation and what difference that creates for the meaning and nuance of the source text. This thesis uses a comparative qualitative method to examine how the onomatopoeias in the book have been affected by the English and the Swedish translations where the author found that there were some onomatopoeias that were more affected by translation than others, whereas omission was found to be the most used translation strategy, which resulted in some loss of nuance, but that no meaning was lost when omitting or changing the onomatopoeias. This thesis also compares the differences of the English and Swedish translations which were also considered to be minimal and disregarding one’s personal stylistic choice, the author found both translations to be appropriate and was therefore also not considered to affect the text in a significant way. The author hopes that further research about onomatopoeias and their place in translation will be studied in the future, as well as translation between Korean-English and Korean-Swedish to further expand and discover the Korean-English and Korean-Swedish literature area.

Abstract:
Fuji; (vii.) Geometria, carpintaria e arquiteturas.
This dissertation is dedicated to the study of \"Hundred Views of Mount Fuji\" (Fugaku Hyakkei) (1834-47?), by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), a 18th-19th century Japanese painter. It is a picture-book (ehon), with one hundred and two prints in black-and-white (sumizukuri) and shades of gray (in its 1st edition), produced with the Japanese woodcut technique, in the style of ukiyo-e (floating-world paintings). The focus of the research is to (1) study the subjects present in the prints, recognizing their categories within traditional Japanese painting topics, their thematic, literary, mythological, religious, and particular references; (2) to analyze the thematic and aesthetic aspects, in relation to spatiality, perspectives and compositions, to identify and reflect on the Western, Chinese and Japanese influences present in the work. At the end of the project is proposed a review of nomeclature for the views of the natural world (shizen), produced by Hokusai, in their last phase of creation (19th century) commonly called by experts, sansuiga (mountains-and-waters paintings), in Japan, or landscape painting, in the West. Therefore, the first part contextualizes the work and life of the painter, briefly presenting characteristics of Japanese society in the Edo period (1603-1868), the ukiyo-e artistic style, the technique used, traditional transmission systems of knowledge in arts and the artist\'s names (g) of the painter, to carry out a study of the \"landscape painting\" genres, of the Western tradition, and \"mountains-and-waters paintings\", of the Chinese tradition (shanshuihua) and Japanese (sansuiga) traditions, in order to compare them and to recognize the aesthetic and thematic influences present in the painter\'s prints. In the second part, the work \"Hundred Views of Mount Fuji\" is analyzed, listing subjects within topics of Japanese painting tradition, so that it would be possible to recognize the layers and compositions of the paintings, as well as their formal and thematic references discussed in the first chapter. For methodological purposes, a classification was made in seven categories, for each one of them was selected some images that best exemplified formal themes and treatments that were intended to be discussed: (i) Historical scenes, mythological figures and legendary; (ii.) Mountains-and-waters and flowers-and-birds paintings; (iii.) Scenes of literate men, contemplation and famous-places; (iv.) Scenes of religious subjects; (v.) Scenes of uses-and-customs, travelers and workers; (vi.) Fujis disguises and lines; (vii.) Geometry, carpentry and architectures.

Abstract:
In the late Middle Ages, the writting of the GCN gave to the norman historiography a new growth in the second half of the 14th century. The text dealt with the history of the duchy of Normandy and the anglo-Norman world from 911 to 1204. In 911, the Viking chief Rollo received the territory of Neustrie from Charles the Simple, king of France, in exchange of the promise to defend the border and to become catholic. The Normans increased there territory over the Channel, thus they started a new dynasty in England. The Normandy has been attached to the french crown under the reign of Philippe Auguste. At a late stage, the text of the GCN has been illuminated with typologic scenes, traditionnaly used in medieval chronicals. Moreover, images became more and more complicated and narrative as well, whose purpose was still the highlighting ofthe anglo-Norman dynasty. The context of the making of the manuscripts is very specific in so far as they have been made during or shortly after the One Hundred Year War. The norman history will be used for the political interest of the belligerants as well as to educate the medieval readership. Widely spread in Nothern France, the illuminated manuscripts permitted the settlement of an iconographic tradition related to the anglo-Norman dynasty in three great artistic centres : the Nomandy, Paris and Flanders. Finally, the text has been changed and increased in order to go on the norman history till now. The GCN managed to go through the period of printing, therefore it lost its new iocnography recently gained

Abstract:
The 17th century was a time of change in Sweden. During the century many of the Swedish laws were altered. In the beginning of the 17th century this alteration resulted in a more severe sentence for most of the committed crimes, but a mitigation of the sentence for some of those crimes was effected in the middle of the 17th century. The aim of this study is to see how two local courts in the judicial system during the mid 17th century in Sweden treated adultery, and those who committed the crime against the background of what the law regarding adultery stipulated. The source material used are court records from Fryksdals hundred and Jösse hundred in western Sweden, and laws regarding adultery during the 17th century. This research shows that the laws regarding adultery were in themselves not gender specific, and their main concern was the marital status of those involved. The punishment for all forms of adultery was a death sentence during the first half of the 17th century, but during the latter part of the century the punishment for a specific form of adultery, when only one of the involved was married, was mitigated to a fine which differed according to marital status. In most of the cases both courts in Fryksdals hundred and Jösse hundred applied the law as it was written in their verdict, and the verdicts of acquittals were few. There is however a tendency in the findings towards a difference between the actual local courts at the end of the first half of the 17th century. Court records show that Fryksdals hundred, which generally had more crimes regarding adultery than Jösse hundred, during that time applied a more rigorous attitude towards those crimes. The conclusion is that, although the results from both hundreds do not differ much from the general picture of adultery in Sweden, there is still a tendency of a difference between the actual local courts themselves.

Abstract:
The Asian soybean rust (FAS) was reported for the first time in Brazil in 2000/2001 and has since caused considerable damage to soybean crops. The use of genetically resistant cultivars is a key component of an integrated program to control this disease. In the researches has been found many difficulties because the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi shows great variability in pathogenicity and the small number of sources of resistance that are available has no adaptability to Brazilian environmental conditions. The overall objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of experimental soybean lines derived from crosses among soybean rust tolerant parents, in order to increase the horizontal resistance (tolerance). The experiments were conducted during the crop years 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11, in three experimental stations (Anhumas, Areão and ESALQ), areas belonging to the College of Agriculture \"Luiz de Queiroz\" and located within the municipality of Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil. The experiments with progenies in generations F2:4, F2:5 and F2:6 were designed in augmented block of Federer, with each experiment divided into sets with common checks. In order to estimate the effect of FAS and the level of tolerance of each genotype to FAS, in each location and crop year, there was conducted two experiments with applications of different fungicides: in the first experiment was applied one fungicide for controlling only the soybean late season leaf diseases (DFC), while in the second experiment were applied one fungicides with active principles for controlling DFC as well as FAS. In the experiments with control of DFC and FAS there was tendency of superior means for PG and PCS. The methodology of contrasting the plant reactions to different fungicides was effective for estimating the effect of FAS and the level of tolerance of each genotype to FAS. The pressure of the fungal FAS on progenies ranged among crop years, being highest in 2009-10. The location Anhumas stood out among the rest, enabling high average seed yield (PG) in all evaluated crop years; this environment also proved to be suitable for estimating the rust effect. The parents 1 (USP 04-18032) and 5 (USP 11-38) were those that originated the earliest progenies and parents 3 (USP 97-08135) and 10 (USP 191-104-11) the later progenies. The parents 8 (USP 191-102-03) and 10 (USP 191-104-11) were the main contributors to higher average PG and one hundred seed weight (PSC). However, the parent 4 ( BUSP 16-015 ) exceeded for PG, besides also have presented high value of average combining ability for PG, in average of the three crop years. The cross 7x10 (USP 14-06-20 x USP 191-104-11) stood out by originating the highest number of progenies with superior performance in PG and tolerance to FAS. On the other hand, the parents 1 (USP 04-18 032), 3 (USP 97-08 135), and 9 (USP 191-103-12) have contributed with the smallest number of superior progenies in PG. There was variation among progenies within cross, for the estimates of adaptability and phenotypic stability parameters. Consequently, the progenies 231-2224-12 (6x8 = USP 97-10 046 x USP 191-102-03), 231-6127-06 (1x8 = USP 04-18 032 x USP 191- 102-03), and 231-1120 - 08 (7x10 = USP 14-06-20 x USP 191-104-11) were the most suitable for the utilization as parents in the recurrent selection for tolerance to FAS.

Arnold, Brian John. "Justification One Hundred Years After Paul." Diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10392/4527.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation seeks to answer the following question: how did the doctrine of justification fare one hundred years after Paul's death (c. AD 165)? The thesis argued is that Paul's view of justification by faith is present in the second century, which particularly challenges T. F. Torrance's long-held notion that the Apostolic Fathers abandoned this doctrine. Chapter 1 provides an overview for the study. Groundwork is laid by providing a history of research on the reception of Paul in the second century as well as a section examining the important works on justification in the Fathers. Chapter 2 examines justification in 1 Clement. Looking primarily at chapter 32, it is argued that Clement held to justification by faith alone apart from works, despite the frequent claim that he held to works righteousness. Chapter 3 analyzes the seven letters of Ignatius. Although he only makes one pertinent reference to justification, Ignatius does have much to say against Judaism, which reveals a good deal about his view of justification. Chapter 4 covers the oft-tread ground of justification in the Epistle to Diognetus. The ninth chapter of Diognetus contains the clearest expression of justification in the second century. Chapter 5 surveys the Odes of Solomon. This overlooked songbook has a wealth of soteriological motifs, including mentions of justification. In at least three Odes there appears to be a dependence on Paul for the Odist's view of justification, and at times, imputation. Chapter 6 explores justification in Justin Martyr's Dialogue with Trypho. Trypho informs Justin that he must keep the whole law in order to be saved. Justin, in turn, looks to the Old Testament, particularly to Abraham, as proof that justification comes by faith and not by adherence to the law. The five authors examined demonstrate greater theological continuity between the first and second centuries than has often been recognized. Paul's doctrine of justification by faith was not replaced with works righteousness in the following century. Justification fared well one hundred years after the Apostle's death.

Abstract:
The Botany Department of Rhodes University is located in the historic Schonland Building. An indigenous garden was created in its courtyard, mainly of species of the Eastern Cape province, and its growth in diversity and stature mirrors the changes in the department over the years. Professor Selmar Schonland, the founding father of botany at Rhodes, was also the curator/director of the Albany Museum. Under his leadership, systematics was firmly established as a discipline at Rhodes and research on the flora of the Eastern Cape begun, to be continued to this day. Under professors William Isaac (1949–1951) and Edgar Twyman (1951–1973), plant physiology became an important area of study, and future leaders in physiology at other universities obtained degrees under them. Phycology and aquatic ecology became notable disciplines with Mary Pocock’s world-class work in the 1940s on freshwater and marine algae, which inspired others such as head of department Professor Stanley Seagrief (1958–1986) to develop these studies further. Mycology and microbiology were established as major subdisciplines under Noel Smith (1926–1948) and Twyman through to the 1960s, when the Department of Microbiology was established. Early studies in ecology owe their success to Tony Martin (1947–1956) and the link with the Grahamstown Botanical Research Station, when a sound base for plant ecology in the Eastern Cape was established. Coastal ecology became a major focus in the 1970s, when Roy Lubke and Ted Avis concentrated on dunes and the management of coastal regions. This led to the establishment of the Department of Environmental Science in the 1990s. The expertise of the botany staff in teaching and research in a variety of fields is reflected in the careers of its many students around the world.

The One Hundred and One Best Songs was published by Taiwan Provincial Education Association in March, 1952. Eighty nine songs were translated by eight translators: Hsiao Er–hua, Chou Zue–pu, Hai Chou, Chang Yi, Liu Ting–fang, Wang Fei–li, Ting Tso–jen, Wang Yu–yuan. This was the first lyrics translation activity led by Taiwan Government. As several worldwide famous songs in this book are collected in the music textbooks in primary education, almost everyone is familiar with lyrics translation since young. However, lyrics translation has not received much attention from the research community. The purpose of this thesis is to explore language phenomena, musical elements and cultural contents of the Chinese lyrics. Adopting Christiane Nord’s text analysis method, this study discusses lyrics translation strategies, the challenges the translators faced, and also the background and function of The One Hundred and One Best Songs. The findings in this text analysis indicate that the lyrics translation of these world-famous songs followed a certain pattern and rules during that period. Except sacred songs, translators were free to choose between faithful expression and total rewrite. These translators used various rhetorical devices to demonstrate the literariness of the lyrics in accordance with the contemporary Chinese poetics. Rhyming and musicality was considered a necessity, while a certain foreignization was applied. This research also finds that there is no unified standard for translating these lyrics in terms of their language use or rhetorical devices. What is clear is that the themes of the song lyrics were rendered morally right and spiritually encouraging. As these world-famous songs traveled, they have been transformed and adjusted to our cultural contexts. Through music, the educational purpose and the appreciation of the world culture has been achieved by these successful lyrics translation.
