Abstract:
Abstract The subject of this paper is the control possibility of the multiphase cage induction motors having number of phases greater than 3. These motors have additional properties for speed control that distinguish them from the standard 3 phase motors: operation at various sequences of supplying voltages due to the inverter control and possible operation with few open-circuited phases. For each supply sequence different no load speeds at the same frequency can be obtained. This feature extends the motor application for miscellaneous drive demands including vector or scalar control. This depends mainly on the type of the stator winding for a given number of phases, since the principle of motor operation is based on co-operation of higher harmonics of magnetic field. Examples of operation are presented for a 9-phase motor, though general approach has been discussed. This motor was fed by a voltage source inverter at field oriented control with forced currents. The mathematical model of the motor was reduced to the form incorporating all most important physical features and appropriate for the control law formulation. The operation was illustrated for various supply sequences for “healthy” motor and for the motor operating at one phase broken. The obtained results have shown that parasitic influence of harmonic fields interaction has negligible influence on motor operation with respect to the useful coupling for properly designed stator winding.

Abstract:
Three phase induction motors are employed in Textile mills, Agriculture and in almost all the machine tools. More than 60% of electrical energy generated being consumed by the induction motors. Hence, even a small contribution in the improvement of the power factor and efficiency will be cost effective. The power factor and efficiency of an induction motor is based on the shaft load and in order to improve the same, multi windings are suggested in the same stator. In multi winding induction machines, when one set of windings is connected to a three phase a supply, a revolving magnetic field of constant magnitude is developed in the air gap which is responsible to work as a conventional induction motor to meet the mechanical load and to develop a three phase EMF in the other winding that works as an Induction Alternator (IA).Double Winding Induction Motor (DWIM) also provides an opportunity to load each winding individually to its rated capacity. A small three phase load or a single phase load may be connected to the second set of winding. The dependency of separate supply for this load is eliminated. Hence, improvement in the efficiency, power factor and energy conservation is made possible in these machines. In order to validate the problem statement, a 3-phase, 3.0 kW, 415 V Double Winding Induction Motor(DWIM), a 3-phase, 3.0 kW, 415 V Double Winding Synchronous Reluctance Motor (DWSyRM), a 3-phase, 2.2 kW, 415 V Three Winding Induction Motor (TWIM) have been designed, fabricated and tested. Two controllers have been designed, one for a DWIM to operate the motor in power balancing and maximum efficiency modes of operation and other to operate TWIM at three different voltage levels depending upon the shaft load. In this paper, detailed comparisons of performances of three multi winding machines are presented.

AbstractA fault diagnostics system of three-phase induction motors was implemented. The implemented system was based on acoustic signals of three-phase induction motors. A feature extraction step was performed using SMOFS-20-EXPANDED (shortened method of frequencies selection-20-Expanded). A classification step was performed using 3 classifiers: LDA (Linear Discriminant Analysis), NBC (Naive Bayes Classifier), CT (Classification Tree). An analysis was carried out for incipient states of three-phase induction motors measured under laboratory conditions. The author measured and analysed the following states of motors: healthy motor, motor with one faulty rotor bar, motor with two faulty rotor bars, motor with faulty ring of squirrel-cage. Measured and analysed states were caused by natural degradation of parts of the machine. The efficiency of recognition of the analysed states was good. The proposed method of fault diagnostics can find application in protection of three-phase induction motors.

This study aims to examine the Problem-Based Learning(PBL) model to improve the understanding of electromagnetic induction material in three-phase induction motor. Most of the students attending the Electrical Machine course have low understanding upon the working principles of the three-phase induction motor, in particular the basic theory of the relationship between the electromagnetic field and the three-phase induction motor. This study involved seventeen students of Electrical Engineering Education Study Program of Universitas PGRI Madiun in East Java. Data were collected through observation and tests, with the statistical test of research using paired sample t-test. This quasi-experimentresearch employed one-group pre-test and post-test design. The results showed that the application of PBL model with video simulation and practicesimprove students’understanding of the materials. The learning process by utilizing simulated animation video and the practices of unloading three-phase induction motors directly, the students’understanding of the working principles of three-phase induction motors increases with the average of N-Gain score. These results indicate the use of video and hands-on practice become effective way to deliver complex and abstract material to students. It is also believed that the learning on electromagnetic induction can be carried out more efficiently. Additionally, such learning model is believed to ease physics education.

Abstract:
Three–phase squirrel cage induction motors are the most widespread types of electrical motors which can be found in both industrial and tertiary applications. There are some reasons why they are so often used, such as simple construction, nearly maintenance-free, advantageous price and the possibility to feed them directly from the AC network. Even if their reliability is very high, some unexpected breakdowns can occur during their operation. In this paper, coil–to–ground faults of motor stator winding have been taken into consideration. These failures have been modelled in several points of one stator phase using COMSOL software. As seen from simulation results these failures have a significant impact on current distribution in stator phases causing changes in rotor currents, motor inner torque, speed, etc., depending strongly on the actual point of the failure.

Abstract:
Abstract— An induction motors (IM) in many industries is used because it has several advantages, such as a very simple and strong construction, the price is relatively cheap, has good efficiency, power factor is quite good, and maintenance is easier. Besides the advantages of induction motors also have disadvantages, one disadvantage of induction motors is not being able to maintain a constant speed when there is a change in load. If the load changes, the speed of the induction motor will decrease. One method of regulating the speed of an induction motor presented in this study is the regulation of an induction motor using a carrier based PWM (CBPWM) inverter with the field oriented control (FOC) technique. The estimation of rotor rotation, torque and flux is done by carrier- based PWM technique which is given input voltage and stator current. To achieve the desired flux and torque, estimation is used as feedback in the control system. In this study, it will be simulated the induction motor speed regulation with a carrier base-based inverter using Matlab. The results obtained through simulation show the length of time to reach the reference speed for speeds of 1500 rpm and 1450 rpm is around 0.45 seconds. And THD average 2,675%.

Abstract:
The multiphase induction motor is considered to be the promising alternative to the conventional three-phase induction motor, especially in safety-critical applications because of its inherent fault-tolerant feature. Therefore, the attention of many researchers has been paid to develop different techniques for detecting various fault types of multiphase induction motors, to securely switch the control mode of the multiphase drive system to its post-fault operation mode. Therefore, several fault detection methods have been researched and adapted; one of these methods is the indices-based fault detection technique. This technique was firstly introduced to detect open-phase fault of multiphase induction motors. The main advantage of this technique is that its mathematical formulation is straightforward and can easily be understood and implemented. In this paper, the study of the indices-based fault detection technique has been extended to test its applicability in detecting some other stator and rotor fault types of multiphase induction motors, namely, open-phase, open-switch, bad connection and broken rotor bar faults. Experimental and simulation validations of this technique are also introduced using a 1 kW prototype symmetrical six-phase induction motor.

Abstract:
Single-phase induction motors are simple in construction, cheap in cost, reliable and easy to repair and maintain. Many controllers were designed to control the speed of a single-phase induction motor, but they are sensitive to plant parameter variations and disturbances. Speed control with very less transient response requires non-linear and robust control methods. Sliding mode control is one of the robust control techniques which is insensitive to disturbances. Here we propose a higher order sliding mode (SM) observer-based controller for a single-phase induction motor. The applied control depends on the dynamic model of the induction motor. The controller is structured by applying a blend of input linearization strategy and higher order sliding mode calculation with consistent estimation of rotor speed and stator currents, which limits the vulnerabilities continuously and lessen the chattering phenomenon in the control effort exertion utilizing a super twisting algorithm.

Voltage sags and interruption are one of most important of power quality problems. They can influence performance of equipment such as induction motors. They are generally caused by short circuit faults in transmission and distribution systems which propagate in entire of power systems. When their appear at a motor terminal, its effects are the speed and the torque will decrease to a level lower than values of the normal and even the motor become stall if magnitude of the voltage sags and duration exceed certain limit. The voltage can return to nominal voltage after end of the voltage sag and interruption. The motor will experience re-acceleration to normal condition is accompanied by large inrush current. A study on induction motors was carried out to confirm these effects. Single-phase and three-phase of small induction motors were used for investigating the effects caused by symmetrical voltage sags and interruption through experimental and simulation.

Abstract:
Over the past decade, research efforts have been made to decrease the number of power electronic devices needed in multi-motor drive systems in order to condense the overall complication and cost of the drive. This paper proposes speed control for a dual three-phase induction motor system driven by five-leg voltage source inverter (FL-VSI) which is used in industrial manufacturing processes. Industrial applications frequently need a number of variable speed electric drives. This technique uses five-leg inverter instead of using conventional two three phase inverters. In the majority of cases, these multi-motor drive systems need independent control of individual motors. It is shown recently that it is possible to separately control two three-phase induction machines supplied through a five-leg voltage source inverter, with one inverter leg being common to both machines. The entire performance of the speed control for the five leg voltage source inverter fed dual-motor drive system is investigated using MATLAB/SIMULINK software.

Abstract:
Three-phase induction motors are widely diffused in the industrial environment. Many times, the rated power of three-phase induction motors is not properly chosen causing incorrect operating conditions from an energetic point of view. Monitoring the mechanical dimension of a new motor is helpful, should an existing motor need to be replaced. This paper presents an IoT sensors network for monitoring the mechanical power produced by three-phase induction motors, adopting an indirect measuring method. The proposed technique can be easily adopted to monitor the mechanical power using only one line of current transducer, reducing the cost of the monitoring system. The proposed indirect measurement technique has been implemented on a low-cost IoT system, based on a Photon Particle SoC. The results show that the proposed IoT system can estimate the mechanical power with a relative error of within 8%.

Study and analysis the effect of variable applied voltage on SCIM performances based on FEA is presented. Three phase squirrel cage induction motor SCIM has been investigated and numerically simulated using finite element method (FEM) with the aid of ANSYS software (RMxprt and Maxwell 2D/3D). This research presents study and analysis of the effects of the voltage variation on performance and efficiency of the three-phase induction motor of the squirrel cage type. The Finite Elements Analysis Method FEA is used as one of the best methods for analysis and simulation of electrical motors in addition to the possibility of dealing with nonlinear equations, Since the induction motor is a complex electromagnetic reaction, the researchers used the ANSYS program to represent and analyze the performance of the motor under variable supply voltage. The case studied in this research is three phases, 380V, 50Hz, 2.2kW, induction motor that widely use in industrial application. The aim of this research is to study the effect of voltage variation on efficiency, current value, power factor and torque of SCIM. The RMxprt software has been used for modeling and simulating the induction motor and calculating the values of phases currents, input and output power in additional of overall efficiency at steady state condition. The next stage of the research is creating Maxwell 2-D design from the base model of RMxprt software, Maxwell 2-D model has the ability to computing the distribution of magnetic field and explaining the performance under steady-state operation. The utilization of a 3 phase induction motor is increasingly developing, so research on speed regulation in 3 phase induction motors is also increasingly widely studied. This is because the use of 3 phase induction motors in the industry and especially hybrid vehicles are increasingly being developed. But there are some disadvantages of induction motors, one of which is the characteristics of non-linear parameters, especially rotor resistance which has varying values for different operating conditions, so it cannot maintain its speed constantly if there is a change in load. This, of course, can affect the performance of an induction motor. To get a constant speed and better system performance on load changes a controller is needed. This study aims to model direct-quadrate parameters (D-Q) using the Field Oriented Control (FOC) method based on the Proportional-Integral (PI) controller. With the d-q parameter controlled, the induction motor will be more stable, because the d-q parameter determines the stability of the change in torque and flux in the induction motor. Proportional-Integral (PI) control used is a classic control system that is easy because it does not need to look for a mathematical model of the system, but it remains effective because it has a fairly stable system response, by setting the best combination of proportional (Kp) constants and Integrator constants ( Ki). In the results of the implementation, it can be seen that the use of FOC can be used as an approach in terms of setting the speed of the induction motor, and with the use of the PI control can help the output response get better with a shorter response time to reach the reference value.

Abstract:
In every kind of industrial application, the operation of fault detection and diagnosis for induction motors is of paramount importance. Fault diagnosis and detection led to minimize the downtime and improves its reliability and availability of the systems. In this article, a fault classification algorithm based on a robust linear discrimination scheme, for the case of a squirrel–cage three phase induction motor, will be presented. The suggested scheme is based on a novel feature extraction mechanism from the measured magnitude and phase of current park's vector pattern. The proposed classification algorithm is applied to detect of two kinds of induction machine faults, which area) broken rotor bar, and b) short circuit in stator winding. The novel feature generation technique is able to transform the problem of fault detection and diagnosis into a simpler space, where direct robust linear discrimination can be applied for solving the classification problem. And thus a clear classification of the healthy and the faulty cases can be robustly performed, by having the optimal hyper plane. This method can separate the feature current classes in a low dimensional subspace. Robust linear discrimination has been one of the most widely used fault detection methods in real-life applications, as this methodology seeks for directions that are efficient for discrimination and at the same time applies a straight-forward implementation. The efficacy of the proposed scheme will be evaluated based on multiple simulation results in different fault types.

Power quality is the most significant factor of power sector. The end user equipment such as induction motor, inverters, rectifiers inject harmonics into power system that influences the quality of power delivered. The presence of harmonics forces the use of instantaneous reactive power theory to calculate instantaneous power that helps in finding the compensating currents to eliminate harmonics. The control action required by active filter is accomplished by STM32F303RET6 microcontroller. Single phase induction motor is used as a dynamic nonlinear load in one of the three phases and resistive loads on the other two phases. TRIAC based RC triggering circuit was used to control the single phase induction motor. Abstract:
Induction motors are widely used from home to industrial applications. Speed of induction motor plays important role, so to control the speed of induction motor various techniques are adopted and one of these techniques is V/F control, which is adopted in this paper. This technique helps to control the speed in open control system in RPM. Moreover, Control is designed in LabVIEW, it is quite helpful to develop the circuit graphically and code is automatically written in the background to run on Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The aim of this research is to study the impacts on diverse parameters during speed control of three phase induction machine with manipulation of GPIC. Solar technology is used as input source to drive the General-Purpose Inverter Controller (GPIC). Apart of this, impacts of modulation index and carrier frequency influencing the active, reactive and apparent power, temperature and power quality and current overshoot is analysed. MATLAB/Simulink and LabVIEW tools are used for simulation and results along with GPIC, Induction motor and solar panel as hardware.

Abstract:
The developed torque with minimum oscillations is one of the difficulties faced when designing drive systems. High ripple torque contents result in fluctuations and acoustic noise that impact the life of a drive system. A multiphase machine can offer a better alternative to a conventional three-phase machine in faulty situations by reducing the number of interruptions in industrial operation. This paper proposes a unique fault-tolerant control strategy for a five-phase induction motor. The paper considers a variable-voltage, variable-frequency control five-phase induction motor in one- and two-phase open circuit faults. The four-phase and three-phase operation modes for these faults are utilized with a modified voltage reference signal. The suggested remedial strategy is the method for compensating a faulty open phase of the machine through a modified reference signal. A modified voltage reference signal can be efficiently executed by a carrier-based pulse width modulation (PWM) system. A test bench for the execution of the fault-tolerant control strategy of the motor drive system is presented in detail along with the experimental results.

Abstract:
Speed control of an induction motor is an important part of the operation of an induction motor. One method of regulating motor speed is the addition of a PID controller. PID parameters must be tuned properly to get the optimal speed. In this study, the PID controller tuning method uses an artificial intelligence method based on Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). ACO algorithm in an intelligent algorithm that is inspired by the behavior of ants looking for food sources in groups with traces of feromone left behind. In this study, food sources are represented as optimal parameters of PID. From the computational results obtained optimal parameters respectively, P (Proportional) 0.5359, I (Integral) 0.1173, D (Derivative) 0.0427. ACO computing found the optimal parameters in the 21st iteration with a minimum fitness function of 11.8914. Case studies are used with two variations of the speed of the induction motor input. With optimal tuning, the performance of the induction motor is increasing, marked by a minimum overshoot of 1.08 pu and a speed variation of both overshoots of 1,201 pu, whereas without control 1.49 pu and 1.28 pu, as well as with PID trial control of 1.22 pu and 1.23 pu respectively. The benefits of this research can be used as a reference for the operation of induction motors, by tuning the Ant Colony intelligent method for the PID controller in real-time with the addition of microcontroller components.

Abstract:
The paper presents a traction induction motor with an innovative rotor winding design. The winding of the rotor is almost identical to the armature winding in the dc traction motors, with the exception of commutator. Winding is double layered. The bars are insulated. Along the iron core bars are secured with wedges and in the winding outhang with bandages. The bars of the bottom layer in the winding outhang part near the iron core are bent radially in the direction of the shaft axis. On the winding outhang of the bottom layer an inner bandage is applied. On the winding outhang of the top layer an outer bandage is applied. All the ends of the bottom and top layers bars, on both sides of the rotor’s core, are connected together by ferrule. There is a ring placed on the shaft or on the coil support on one side of the rotor’s core. It is best if this ring is made of copper. The ring is characterized by mp tongues, which are distributed evenly along its circumference (p is number of winding pole pairs and m is number of rotor winding phases). Tongues are connected to equally uniformly placed ferrules. Bandages are made of carbon fibre or glass fibre tape.

Abstract:
Detecting the faults related to the operating condition of induction motors is a very important task for avoiding system failure. In this paper, a novel methodology is demonstrated to detect the working condition of a three-phase induction motor and classify it as a faulty or healthy motor. The electrical current signal data is collected for five different types of fault and one normal operating condition of the induction motors. The first part of the methodology illustrates a pattern recognition technique based on the empirical wavelet transform, to transform the raw current signal into two dimensional (2-D) grayscale images comprising the information related to the faults. Second, a deep CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) model is proposed to automatically extract robust features from the grayscale images to diagnose the faults in the induction motors. The experimental results show that the proposed methodology achieves a competitive accuracy in the fault diagnosis of the induction motors and that it outperformed the traditional statistical and other deep learning methods.

Abstract:
Three-phase induction motors are considered to be the workhorse of industry. Therefore, induction motor faults are not only the cause of users’ frustrations but they also drive up the costs related to unexpected breakdowns, repair actions, and safety issues. One of the most critical faults in three-phase induction motors is related to the occurrence of inter-turn short circuits, due to its devastating consequences. The topic of inter-turn short-circuit faults in three-phase induction motors has been discussed over recent decades by several researchers. These studies have mainly dealt with early fault detection to avoid dramatic consequences. However, they fall short of addressing the potential burnout of the induction motor before the detection step. Furthermore, the cumulative action played by an inevitable degree of unbalanced supply voltages may exacerbate such consequences. For that reason, in deep detail, this paper delves into the thermal analysis of the induction motor when operating under these two harsh conditions: unbalanced supply voltages and the presence of the most incipient type of inter-turn short-circuit condition—a short-circuit between two turns only. In this work, the finite element method has been applied to create the faulty scenarios, and a commercial software (Flux2D) has been used in order to simulate the electromagnetic and thermal behavior of the machine for various degrees of severity of the aforementioned faulty modes. The obtained results confirm that the diagnostic tools reported in the literature might not be effective, failing to warrant the required lead time so that suitable actions can be taken to prevent permanent damage to the machine.

Abstract:
The vector control has become the first alternative in control of three phase induction motor. One of the vector control method which is commonly used is the direct torque control (DTC) method. However, this system has drawback due to the existence of torque ripples. The addition of the duty ratio control base on fuzzy logic can give better performance compared to conventional DTC. By doing an examination on DTC and duty ratio using small, medium and big capacities of three phase induction motors can be shown the influence from moment of inertia to rotor rotation. This paper uses MATLAB SIMULINK for the simulation study with three types of motor power, for example 1, 10 and 50 hp. It is shown that using the same parameters, a motor with a larger moment inertia gives a better performance in comparison to a motor with smaller moment of inertia.

A three-phase induction motor is one of the electric machines and is classified as an AC motor that is widely used in the industrial world. The development of control systems in the industry will not be separated from the data communication system. To send data from the field (sensor) to the controller, for communication between controllers, to send data from the controller to the computer, all require data communication. One of the most widely used data communication systems in industrial control systems is the Modbus protocol. Even in the world of education there are also many studies that develop control systems using modbus communication. The speed regulation of three phase induction motor can be done in various ways one of them is by using Variable Speed Drive which functions to adjust the frequency of the source so as to get the desired motor speed (rpm). Communication between VSD, Arduino and PC with the MODBUS protocol is a system built to be able to monitor the performance of a three phase induction motor.

Abstract:
Induction motors are widely used in the industrial world because they have many advantages, including construction that is very simple and strong, cheap, has high efficiency, quite good power factor, and maintenance is easier. Besides the advantages of induction motors also have weaknesses, one of the disadvantages of an induction motor is not being able to maintain its speed constantly if there is a change in load. If there is a change in load, the speed of the induction motor will decrease. One method of regulating the speed of an induction motor developed in addition to vector control is the Direct Torque Control (DTC) method. The DTC control technique allows direct and separate flux and torque settings and can be done without using a speed sensor. The estimated rotor rotation, torque and flux is carried out by the DTC which is inputted with stator voltage and current. To achieve the desired flux and torque estimation is used as feedback on the control system. In this final assignment, the speed regulation of the induction motor will be simulated using the DTC method using Matlab. The results obtained through the simulation show the length of time to reach the reference speed for speeds of 500rpm and 1000 rpm is around 0.5 seconds. This paper examines the properties of a multi-phase drive for EV (electric vehicles) and HEV (hybrid-electric vehicles) using a simulation model in the Matlab/Simulink environment and verifies the findings by experimental measurements on a real motor. The paper studies a five-phase induction motor, a suitable alternative for electric vehicles, due to its better properties such as better torque, smoother ripple, better fault tolerance, and the possibility of connecting stator windings to star, pentagon, and pentagram. The fundamentals of the article are to find out how this engine behaves in fault states, which can be called hazardous states. The paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of the decrease of mechanical power, torque, and power losses during motor operation without failure, in case of failure of one phase, and in case of failure of two adjacent phases and two non-adjacent phases, in different connections. In the simulations, the five-phase drive is powered from an ideal five-phase voltage source to verify the behavior of losses on the motor in fault conditions. Subsequently, the motor model is powered by a five-phase VSI, while the simulated waveforms are confirmed on a real motor, which is also powered by a five-phase VSI. The investigation results are the detection, which of the stator windings has better properties in the fault-free state and the case of fault states in operation. For which stator windings connection, it is most advantageous to design and dimension a five-phase induction motor.

Maximum all possible switching sequences are analyzed and sensor less voltage balancing technique depending on simple switching modes was integrated as level shifted PWM controller for control the PUC5 inverter switches. Sensor less voltage balancing fixes the capacitor voltage (Vc) at half of the PV source (Vdc) magnitude in each phase, which results the symmetric five level wave in phase voltage output and seven level waveform in line voltage with less harmonics. This topology minimizes the complication in the control system which creates the PUC5 inverter most suitable for industrial applications and market requirements.<strong> </strong>It is compared with other popular multilevel inverters In terms of component count, voltage rating, voltage balancing and complexity etc. In order to test the performance proposed PUC inverter it is tested with rated load with Matlab/Simulink. This paper presents a methodology for winding stator fault detection of induction motors, using an external search coil, which is a noninvasive technique and can be applied during motor operation. The dispersion magnetic flux of the motor operating in abnormal conditions induces a voltage in the search coil that differs from a reference pattern corresponding to the healthy stator winding. Experimental data were obtained in a test bench using a 0.75 kW three-phase squirrel-cage induction motor with the stator winding modified to allow the introduction of short circuits. This work considered short circuits in one phase, involving 1%, 3%, 5% and 10% of the turns, with the motor loaded with a varying torque. Fault diagnosis is obtained through two models of artificial neural networks, implemented with the signals in the time domain. The obtained results demonstrated that the developed methodology presents difficulties in predicting short circuits in incipient stages, but for short circuits of higher severity, the behaviour improved substantially, being 100% successful for faults with 10% turns short-circuited.

Induction motors have been widely used in various electrical applications. However, their efficiency are still limited due to losses occurring during operation, especially for smaller ratings. Higher the electrical conductivity of motor rotor by lower its impurity content is one of practical and simple way to improve motor efficiency. The aim of this work is to reduce the impurity content of aluminium rotor by addition of boron in the form of Al-5wt%B master alloy and Na2B4O7-NaCl-KCl flux, and then sedimention of their precipitated particles. The purer melt was then cast as rotors for single-phase induction motors. With the amount of addition of boron in aluminium melt in this work, boron in Al-5wt%B master alloy was more pronounced in removing impurities in aluminium melt than that in Na2B4O7. It was found that the rotors made of aluminium melt with lower impurity contents and hence higher electrical conductivity resulted in more enhancement of motor efficiency.

<p>This paper, introduced an expression of Economic Efficiency Measure (EEM) to permit quick evaluation for replacement of faulty induction motor with alternative (new or refurbished motor) for lowest life-cycle cost based on efficiency and rated-load conditions. This approach, simplifies the process for evaluating the energy efficiency to mere proportionate factor called as EEM. During the operating phase, the motor losses correspond to extra energy consumption, based on various parameters like motor operating conditions, operating hours, operating costs, fault factor, depreciation factor and fixed costs. The approach is effective in addressing the global issue on replacement of the faulty motor that needs a comprehensive analysis and mathematical expression. Compared to other alternatives the EEM provides a simple but effective and reliable means to asses, the feasibility of replacing or refurbishing the faulty motor. In this paper, a speed control system for a three-phase induction motor was modelled and designed within LabVIEW software environment. After structuring the dynamical model of the motor, a current controller was developed to stabilize the system and avoid a wind-up situation. Then, a speed controller was designed, using PID and Field Weakening techniques, to generate the reference current values. The field-weakening algorithm is used to achieve stability at speeds that are higher than the nominal one. An estimator is used to calculate the flux angle and the electro-mechanical speed of the motor. As a result, the system achieved the desired speed with good transient and steady state responses. In addition, the system proved to be robust when the torque load is applied in all cases.
