Abstract Native American communities are disproportionately impacted by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and are more likely to identify as family caregivers compared to other racial groups. Caregiver resources such as educational, supportive, and respite services have been shown to decrease burden and improve health outcomes. However, government and tribal services to support caregivers are underutilized. Using a CBPR approach, within the framework of an existing partnership between the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, all phases of re

This ethnographic study explores how contemporary Oneida people are using traditional beliefs and practices that are prescribed and enshrined in Haudenosaunee oral traditions to further their political ends. The current tribal government seeks to engender control over its citizens, affairs, and properties by using traditions of oral history to claim legitimacy. An overarching contention is over the process of governance as engendered by the process of consensus. This traditional Haudenosaunee practice is at the heart of the matter of the legitimacy of modern tribal government as it is used by

<p> Comprehensive planning can help communities engage in purposeful and sustainable land use development. Previous research has indicated that Indian reservations in the United States often face unique roadblocks to these planning efforts: checkerboard patterns of tribal and nontribal ownership, and the presence of both tribal and local governments exercising land use authority within the same shared space. These roadblocks can lead to uncooperative, uncoordinated, or unsustainable development. Despite these noted problems, there remains an important gap in the current literature regarding so

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on John Humphrey Noyes' frequent informal talks to Oneida residents about spiritual and social matters. It recounts how the Oneida community dubbed Noyes' teachings as “home talks” and published many of them in a book based on notes taken by residents, which were reviewed by Noyes himself for accuracy. It also cites home talks as examples of the type of teachings Oneida community members heard from their leader. The chapter describes one of Noyes' home talks, wherein he philosophized on the organization and function of families and the binding role of love in what he termed “family communism.” It covers Noyes' discussion of the need of individuals to identify their personal faults in order to correct them.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the Oneida Association's practice of “complex marriage” that frequently elicited curiosity and criticism. It explains the complex marriage practice, wherein married members of the Oneida community abandoned monogamy for a system of free love that permitted sexual intercourse between consenting individuals. It also reviews the Oneida Association's first annual report in 1848 that included a nearly twenty-page exposition of the biblical justifications for the marriage practice titled “Bible Argument.” The chapter looks at testimonials in the annual report of community members that celebrated different benefits of the complex marriage. It highlights the testimonials that confirm the effect of the Social Theory of the Oneida Association upon their character.

Abstract:
Chapter 2 zooms in on the ideal of a loving two-generation family and how it was shaped and embedded in the republican society and its structures. The chapter unfolds this story from a contemporaneous critical perspective by presenting it through the eyes of John H. Noyes, the leader of the Oneida Community, which provided a religious and sexual countermodel to life in a nuclear family. Yet by looking at Noyes and his utopian and seemingly progressive commune, the chapter unfolds the meanings and significance of religion and sex in the republic, and it also shows how patriarchal patterns persisted in the new American society. The chapter draws on Noyes’s many writings and the papers of the Oneida Community in the Syracuse University Library.
