Abstract:

The objective of this chapter is to identify the consequences of comorbidity, ischemic heart disease, and functional stroke in elderly people at home. Aystematic review using electronic databases—PubMed, Ebscohost, SciELO, and B On—articles published between 2009 and 2016, based on the descriptors (DeCS), was used. The results are presented in the flow diagram generator according to the Prisma statement. For the level of evidence, the authors opted for the JBI grid, and for quality, EPHPP. Sampling was restricted to six articles, three of which were cross-sectional studies, one a cohort study, one a qualitative study, and one a random study. In the home setting, individuals who have suffered a stroke and those with impaired motor ability exhibit greater changes in functionality compared to individuals with ischemic cardiopathy. ICF allows for the analysis of life and health aspects of elderly people with these pathologies. The authors considered important studies with more significant samples and greater scientific evidence.

Fragility affects the ability to recover from stress conditions as the use of information and communication technologies in health care grows. The objective of this chapter is to identify evidence on interventions using ICT technology to prevent or delay frailty. A systematic review of the literature was used. Search was performed in April 2019 through B-on and EBSCO host, in databases Academic Search Complet, with Full Test in MEDLINE, CINAHL Plus®, and MedicLatina. Boolean equation ((Telemedicine) OR (mobile health) OR (computer reality) OR (virtual reality)) AND (Frail Elderly) AND (randomized controlled trial), from 2013 to 2017. Articles followed PRISMA flowchart. Results show that 2946 articles were selected, and 17 met the criteria. The used ICT were virtual-augmented reality, multidisciplinary home-telehealth and telemonitoring, nurse home visits, Wii Fit, and other interactive video games. The chapter conclude that the implementation of ICT to manage self-care at home requires an interdisciplinary, collaborative, and user-centered approach to improve the viability, acceptability, and usability of innovations.

It is well known, since Goodman [1955], that principles of induction require a projectibility constraint. On the present account, such a constraint is inherited from the projectibility constraint on (A1)–(A3). It remains to be shown, however, that this derived constraint is the intuitively correct constraint. Let us define: (1.1) A concept B (or the corresponding property) is inductively projectible with respect to a concept A (or the corresponding property) iff ┌X is a set of A’s, and all the members of X are also B’s┐ is a prima facie reason for ┌A ⇒ B┐, and this prima facie reason would not be defeated by learning that there are non-B’s. A nomic generalization is projectible iff its consequent is inductively projectible with respect to its antecedent. What is needed is an argument to show that inductive projectibility is the same thing as projectibility. To make this plausible, I will argue that inductive projectibility has the same closure properties as those defended for projectibility in Chapter 3. Goodman introduced inductive projectibility with examples of nonprojectible concepts like grue and bleen, and the impression has remained that only a few peculiar concepts fail to be inductively projectible. That, however, is a mistake. It is not difficult to show that most concepts fail to be inductively projectible, inductive projectibility being the exception rather than the rule. This results from the fact that, just like projectibility, the set of inductively projectible concepts is not closed under most logical operations. In particular, I will argue below that although inductive projectibility is closed under conjunction, it is not closed under either disjunction or negation. That is, negations or disjunctions of inductively projectible concepts are not automatically inductively projectible. Just as for projectibility, we can argue fairly conclusively that inductive projectibility is closed under conjunction. More precisely, the following two principles hold: (1.2) If A and B are inductively projectible with respect to C, then (A&B) is inductively projectible with respect to C. (1.3) If A is inductively projectible with respect to both B and C, then A is inductively projectible with respect to (B&C).

This chapter assesses composer/pianist Michael Finnissy’s Outside Fort Tregantle (2008). This song is less of a display piece than a contemplative reverie. Unsurprisingly, though, the pianist is given a dauntingly virtuoso, rhythmically and harmonically complex part. Through all this, the singer drifts serene and undeterred, in gently undulating lines, creating an almost impressionistic effect. Good breath control, clarity, and evenness of tone are prime requisites, and time will need to be allowed for familiarization with pitches. The music’s modernist idiom is highly individual and fascinating, and to capture its haunting quality requires deep thought and insight. At the slow opening tempo, phrases will need plenty of support in order to be sung in one span. Ultimately, for the intelligent singer, the piece constitutes a distinctive test of empathy and sensitivity.

This chapter focuses on American composer Rodney Lister’s Songs to Harvest (2006). As shown in this attractive cycle, Lister has a distinctive and fascinating way of writing for voice and piano. The voice projects succinct, shapely phrases, while linear piano parts weave a tapestry of sinuous counterpoint, frequently in two parts only, often with three-against-two rhythms. When the voice stops, the piano continues, its luminous texture ebbing and flowing. Ingeniously, it seems to give a subliminal commentary as well as an irresistible propulsion to the music. The prime test of the songsmith is to set words so that they can be heard easily, and Lister passes this with flying colours. A predominantly medium range guarantees comfortable articulation—the highest note occurs only once, fleetingly. The cohesive musical idiom is discreetly contemporary, disciplined, and carefully modulated. Pitching should be relatively unproblematic—there is a good deal of doubling with the piano, and plenty of time to plot each interval cleanly.

Chapter 6 raises crucial ethical and political questions about the practice of punishment by means of the prison. It discusses the central importance of power in the carceral environment and its potential for humanitarian abuse. After a reading of Oscar Wilde’s ‘Ballad of Reading Gaol’ the chapter outlines G. B. Shaw’s and Karl Menninger’s metaphoric thesis of imprisonment as crime and goes on to present an analysis of punitivity in current penal policy and public polemic. Desha, a prominent Harrison County farmer and politician, for both treason and high misdemeanor; however, Union commanders incarcerated him as a civilian prisoner for three months in Camp Chase, a Northern prison, on unspecified charges. This chapter follows Desha’s pro-Confederate activities from the time he was a state representative participating in a State Rights convention and its committees. The book details an inquiry by a legislative committee on his alleged disloyal activities, a federal trial for treason, and his role as Harrison County’s “secessionist leader.” It was Desha’s prominent role that helped label Cynthiana as a Rebel town. The chapter quotes letters describing farm operations and camp life between Eliza Jean Desha and her husband, Lucius Desha, who was a political prisoner at Camp Chase, Ohio.

The epilogue explains how the development of students’ rights between the 1960s and the 1980s shaped understandings of children’s rights more broadly. The epilogue discusses the Convention on the Rights of the Child, a United Nations treaty that the United States has refused to ratify, and argues that the Convention conflicts with understandings of children’s rights as expressed by American constitutional law.
