Abstract:
This study examines the moderating influence of the economy on the nexus between local government expenditure and revenue in Nigeria. Data on local government expenditure and revenue and gross domestic product were collected from the Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletins covering a period of 24 years (1993–2016). The data were log normalized in order to eliminate heteroskedasticity. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data. The results indicate that gross domestic product has a significant positive influence on local government expenditure and revenue. Also, the results show that the local government revenue has a significant positive effect on local government expenditure in Nigeria. The study therefore concludes that the Nigerian economy has a significant effect on fiscal management in local government. The study recommends among others that state and federal government should take measures to improve the economy since it has significant positive effect on local government fiscal management.

Abstract:
This study was carried out to examine six characteristics representing the board of directors (size, independence, meetings, tenure, gender and expertise) of board of directors and their impact on quality of financial reports. A correlational research design was used to examine influence of board quality of financial reports using 12 listed deposit money banks. Finding suggests board shows enormous influence on quality of financial reports. Specific findings show that financial reporting quality will be higher if the size of the board of directors is increased. However, board tenure and expertise cause leads to poor financial reporting quality. In addition, we do not find evidence that board independence, meetings and gender improve quality of financial report. Among other recommendations, the study suggest that the number of board members should be increased since evidence has shown that it enhances financial reporting quality, while the tenure of board members should be reduced since it decreases financial reporting quality.

Abstract:
Analyst forecast information is available to the public in less developed countries at a little cost. The role of analysts in forecasting stock returns cannot be over-emphasized. Yet, little scholarly works have been done in Nigeria. The purpose of this paper is to interrogate analysts’ forecasts' effect on share prices in Nigeria. The research approach is correlational. We collected and analyzed data for several years from the annual reports and accounts of 138 corporations over 10 years (2010-2019). The results indicate that experts 1, 3, and 4 have a significant and positive impact on stock return. The information from expert 2 had failed to show any signal of significance. Based on the majority of these results, the paper recommends that financial analysts consider the information when considering the price of stocks in Nigeria. The conclusion is that the study results have implications for stakeholders (management, public, employees, suppliers, investors, creditors, regulators, governments, customers, users, partners, charity organizations, special interest-holders; competitors, community groups, trade groups, and the media/press) and based on the findings, it is suggested among others that stakeholders who need the prices of stocks should depend on analyst forecast.

Abstract:
Despite the growing interest in the role of chief executive officers in their companies’ bankruptcies, very few studies have examined the nexus between chief executive officers and bankruptcy risk in Nigeria. This paper interrogates whether or not chief executive officers influence financial distress among quoted resources corporations. Data were obtained from Machameratios, a corporation which specializes in data mining for a period of 10 years (2010-2019). The data were subject of descriptive statistics such as number of observations, minimum mean, maximum mean, average mean, standard deviation and inferential statistics such as correlation matrix and multiple regression based on random effect model, which was arrived at after conducting Hausman specification check. Diagnostic checks such as normality, multicollinearity, heteroskedasticity and Breusch and Pagan Lagrangian multiplier test for random effects were carried out before arriving at decisions. Findings showed that both chief executive officers’ duality, nationality, gender, and turnover are not significant. However, the paper found chief executive officers’ tenure significant and positive and ownership to be negative but significant. As a result of these findings, it was suggested that the tenure of CEOs should be elongated while the percentage of their shares ownerships should be reduced.

Abstract:
The purpose of this follow-up Delphi survey was to have an expert panel of 31 academic geriatric physicians, geriatric nurses, and medical directors of nursing homes evaluate the original timeline set to avoid oral neglect of nursing home residents. The Oral Neglect in Institutionalized Elderly (ONiIE) timelines defined oral neglect as having occurred when >7 days for acute oral diseases/conditions or >34 days for chronic oral disease/conditions had passed between initial diagnosis and offering access to dental care to the long-term care (LTC) nursing home resident. The results of this follow-up Delphi survey validated those originally defined ONiIE timelines as 90% of this panel agreed with the original timelines. This ONiIE definition adds a broad-based validation for the ONiIE timelines for setting an oral health standard of care for institutionalized elderly residents of nursing homes and should now be used to protect the vulnerable elderly residing in LTC nursing homes.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the effects of audit committees on audit quality of listed consumergoods companies in Nigeria over the period 2006–2016 using longitudinal research design. The population of the study is the twenty-three listed consumer-goods companies with the Nigerian Stock Exchange as at 31st December, 2016. The sample size is fifteen after filtering eight companies listed outside the period of the study and without complete data set. The study uses secondary data from the published annual reports and accounts of sample firms. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for the study. The results show that audit committee size has insignificant positive effect on audit quality; audit committee head shows mixed results (insignificant positive effect when audit quality is measured by audit firm size and insignificant negative effect when audit quality is measured by audit tenure). In view of these findings, the study concludes that audit committee size and head have no significant effect on audit quality of listed consumer-goods companies in Nigeria. The study, therefore, recommends that consideration should not be given to size and head of audit committees when considering matters relating to audit quality.

Abstract:
This study evaluates Financial Performance and Corporate Social Responsibility in listed Non-financial firms in Nigeria from 2009 to 2018. CSR practice by companies is virtually affected by their operations and performance. Therefore, companies with better performance are expected to engage more in CSR and consider public interest in corporate decision making. The population of this study covers all the seventy-five (75) listed non-financial firms in Nigeria from January 2009 - 31st December, 2018, from these a sample of fifty six (56) listed non-financial firms were selected by filtering. Narrowing down, the study to more specific term, it examines the effect of return on investment and net profit margin using leverage as control variables on CSR of listed non-financial firms in Nigeria. The Researcher employs correlational and expo-facto research designs using panel multiple regression as techniques of data analysis. Quantitative approach was adopted in the study and the study aligns to positivist paradigm. The study reveals that return on investment positively, strongly and statistically determines CSR measured at 1% level of significance respectively. Also, net profit margin positively influences the CSR of listed non-financial firms in Nigeria measured at 5% level of significance. The result implies that financial performance determines the CSR of non-financial firms in Nigeria. The study concludes that nonfinancial firms with high performance invest more in Corporate Social Services than low performing once. Therefore, the study recommends amongst others that managers of nonfinancial companies in Nigeria should improve their internal control mechanism for cost reduction and increase of net profit margin. While for return on investment, the management of listed non-financial firms should maintain quality assets that are durable. This is necessary because of the potential of companies that have such assets to vote more funds towards CSR.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Wills, Benjamin. "Access to 'alternative' food system qualities: a comparative study of internet and non-internet mediated systems of provision." Thesis, 2014. https://eprints.utas.edu.au/21721/1/Whole-Wills-thesis-2014.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
‘Alternative’ food systems (AFS), understood as assemblages of agri-food related production, exchange and consumption activities, often characterised by increased physically and/or cognitive proximity between producers and consumers, have experienced considerable academic and popular interest in the past decade and a half. Despite continued growth in the number and popularity of AFS manifestations like farmers’ markets, research suggests that these provisioning systems remain the preserve of relatively affluent consumers. Furthermore, the language and practices of alternative food system advocates has tended to create a divide between ‘alternative’ and ‘conventional’ food systems which is not always empirically supported and which has made attempts at improving AFS access equity susceptible to claims that their defining quality attributes are inevitably diluted as they enter the mass market. At the same time, the growing popularity of internet enabled e-commerce has resulted in fundamental changes to many markets, including claims that there is a structural shift by consumer away from mass marketed products towards niche markets, such as those which characterise AFS. This study examines this changing dynamic via a comparison of e-commerce mediated AFS and non e-commerce mediated AFS. The purpose of this comparison being to determine if the application of e-commerce to AFS has resulted in a relative increase in demand from resource constrained consumers and/or a significant change to the quality conventions associated with these systems and which currently mark them as ‘alternative’. This research goal required the development of a novel theoretical model capable of incorporating the language of firm level strategy, as it relates to e-commerce and niche markets, as well as providing a means of discussing AFS quality attributes which does not resort to a bifurcated theory of alternative and conventional food systems. To this end, a theoretical model is advanced within this study which incorporates Michael Porter’s theory of generic strategy, the product lifecycle theory and French conventions theory. The latter being particularly useful as a tool for highlighting differences in production systems based upon different consumer and producer quality conventions. Empirical data for this study was gathered using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Qualitative data was gathered via in-depth interviews with AFS business actors within both e-commerce and non e-commerce mediated AFS in Melbourne, Australia and Vancouver, Canada. Quantitative data was gathered via a survey of 375 consumers who regularly acquired food through either the e-commerce mediated or non e-commerce mediated AFS studied in Melbourne and Vancouver. Results from this study show that the application of e-commerce to AFS is indeed associated with significant changes in consumer demand for AFS products, including consumer demographics, order size and consumer motivation. The data gathered on consumer motivation is particularly useful in determining how the consumer’s understanding of quality varies between e-commerce mediated and non e-commerce mediated AFS. Together with the interview and case study data gathered from participating AFS firms this study is able to show that the application of e-commerce to AFS is associated with changes in access for resource constrained consumers, but also that these changes have come at the expense of specific quality attributes. These finding are relevant not only to AFS scholars and participants interested in improved access equity and a reduction in simplistic interpretations of AFS, but also to participants in niche markets more generally which rely on the production, exchange and consumption of diverse quality attributes.

Abstract:
Gambari Forest Reserve (GFR) is located in Oyo State, in the south-western region of Nigeria, in the Mamu locality (Gambari Forest), co-ordinate 3.7 and 3.9E” and latitude 7°26 1 N and longitude 3°5 1 E. i.e. 17 km South-East of Ibadan, along the Ibadan/Ijebu-Ode road. The major taxa studies for this research include the forest tree species forest ecosystem in Gambari Forest Reserve, such as: Leucaena leucocephala, Leucaena glauca, Gliricidia sepium,Tectona grandis, Gmelina arborea, Swietenia macrophylla, Acacia spp., Albizia spp., Cassia siamea, and Pithecellobium saman. 200 key respondents participated in this study, which were drawn from the seven main communities namely Ibusogboro, Oloowa, Daley North and south, Onipe, Mamu, Olubi and Onipanu respectively. The results revealed that there are significant anthropogenic interventions taking place in the study area. It is therefore imperative to conserve and safeguard GFR ecosystem resources, as ensuring that ecosystem services and biodiversity function at optimum levels. This study therefore recommends continued research to be undertaken, in addition to consistent monitoring and conserving our fragile forest resources, with the aim of achieving optimum functioning and service delivery.
