Abstract:
Despite various global and local economic crises, the shift of some readers to screen reading, growing online shopping habits, and the shorter time spent on reading books, physical bookstores are able to change and retain their customers. This research is a continuation of a 2013 study in order to capture the current situation and identify the changes that have taken place in Lithuanian physical bookstores over the past five years. During the research, the list of bookstores operating in Lithuania compiled in 2013 was updated and clarified, and an analysis of the collected data and comparison with the data of 2013 were performed. The results showed that from 2013 to 2018 the number of bookstores in Lithuania decreased by 18.8%, to 168 units. On average, the number of inhabitants per Lithuanian bookstore increased by 16.2% and reached 16,720 inhabitants per bookstore; the number of municipalities with no bookstores at all increased to 15 (9 in 2013). The largest Lithuanian bookstore networks remained the same: Vaga and Pegasas, which maintained almost the same number of bookstores – 33 bookstores at the end of 2018. The number of medium-sized bookstore networks decreased, and only one of the nine small bookstore networks (2–3 bookstores), which owned two bookstores in 2013, remained. Such changes show that the two major bookstore networks Vaga and Pegasas are strengthening their market position. Calculated by the number of bookstores, in 2018 they already ran 39% of the market. The range of available books in physical Lithuanian bookstores has decreased – from an average 9 thousand titles in 2013 up to 6 thousand titles in 2018. It seems that the 2004–2008 race between physical bookstores for the largest range of book titles in the past is now witnessing an increase in the choice of additional goods in bookstores, sometimes even exceeding their book sales. The decrease and change in the number and range of physical bookstores in Lithuania since 2008 was due to several reasons – from the economic crisis at that time, the continuing decline of the population to the decline of book reading habits, and the transition of some readers to on-screen reading and online shopping.

Abstract:
The project's main goal is to build an online book store where users can search for and buy books based on title, author, and subject. The chosen books are shown in a tabular style and the customer may buy them online using a credit card. Using this Website, the user may buy a book online rather than going to a bookshop and spending time. Many online bookstores, such as Powell's and Amazon, were created using HTML. We suggest creating a comparable website with .NET and SQL Server. An online book store is a web application that allows customers to purchase ebooks. Through a web browser the customers can search for a book by its title or author, later can add it to the shopping cart and finally purchase using a credit card transaction. The client may sign in using his login credentials, or new clients can simply open an account. Customers must submit their full name, contact details, and shipping address. The user may also provide a review of a book by rating it on a scale of one to five. The books are classified into different types depending on their subject matter, such as software, databases, English, and architecture. Customers can shop online at the Online Book Store Website using a web browser. A client may create an account, sign in, add things to his shopping basket, and buy the product using his credit card information. As opposed to a frequent user, the Administrator has more abilities. He has the ability to add, delete, and edit book details, book categories, and member information, as well as confirm a placed order. This application was created with PHP and web programming languages. The Online Book Store is built using the Master page, data sets, data grids, and user controls.

Abstract:
The world Reader bookstore has a structured collection of books neatly arranged on shelves. The question is how the bookstore should keep the shelves full and make profit at the same time. Books are expensive due to the building tax that the business owner needs to pay, along with the tax imposed on each book. Hence, a bookstore owner will typically increase the prices of the books to make profit. Due to the high prices, people are keener to buy books through online store. Thus, this study is conducted to optimize books needed to be sold in a bookstore using the fuzzy linear programming approach. This study will focus more on fiction and non-fiction books that are available in the bookstore, which will help the bookstore to achieve its highest profit in the future. The result shows that the profit in a closed interval of [RM209016.00, RM348691.20] was obtained once the fiction and non-fiction books were [0 unit, 8000 units] and [4000 units, 4000 units]. Based on the findings of the study, other businesses can also use this method in to optimize their business in the future.

Abstract:
Purpose The perceived electronic-service quality (e-SQ) has become a relevant research area, not only in developed but also in smaller, less-developed countries. The purpose of this paper is to provide a description of an analysis into the relationship of the dimensions of perceived e-SQ and satisfaction as well as WOM intention in case of an online bookstore in Hungary where technical development and internet penetration is emerging; however, it is developing from an economic perspective. Beyond this a potential segmentation is introduced in the Hungarian market. Design/methodology/approach The direct effect of perceived e-SQ’s dimensions on satisfaction and on traditional WOM were analysed using the PLS-SEM method, which was followed by the segmentation approach. The paper also demonstrates differences of the identified consumer segments, using multivariate analysis of variance. Findings According to the research only the dimension of efficiency and responsiveness have a significant positive effect on satisfaction, and beside these the quality perception of fulfilment has a significant influence on WOM intention. Using the relevant latent variable scores segmentation was conducted and four clusters were identified. Originality/value Due to peculiarities of e-services, quality measurement needs a constant revision and adoption. Extent amount of research has been dedicated to analyse the relationship of quality and satisfaction, but the direct effect of relevant quality dimensions on word-of-mouth intention is a new research field. Segmenting customers based on latent variable scores of the proposed model has not been conducted before in case of an online bookstore in Hungary. According to the results the evaluation of the technology-based components has the greatest effect on satisfaction and WOM intention. However, web-shops managers should focus not only on online characteristics but also on offline, human-based interactions and the service quality of their delivery partners.

Abstract:
Purpose The massive growth in the number of book titles has made publishers think about how to attract a customer’s attention to particular books. This is the reason why the book cover plays an important role as a tool of communication with the reader. The research question of this exploratory study is whether the preference given by readers to book cover colors is different across genders and age groups when they choose the book in an online bookstore by its cover. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach The experiment in a bookstore and a library was done. Each respondent was asked to choose one book from our sample of 18 books and a mobile eye tracking laboratory was set up in order to find out the respondents’ basic gazing data. After conducting an experiment with bookstore and library visitors, the results showed that younger women tend to select a book by its cover (when the time for selection is not limited) statistically significantly faster than men of the same age group. The difference disappears with age. Findings The data of the experiment suggested that women from the age group 18-35 prefer books with cool color covers and the preference disappears with age; accordingly, men in the age group 56+ prefer books with warm color covers. The preference was not seen in younger age groups. The analysis of data on the number of choices for each cover and the time spent looking at each of them revealed a significant positive correlation between the women’s preferences in selecting covers and the time women spend looking at them; however, there was no such correlation in the case of men’s data. Originality/value The study has shown that the reader’s book choice is at least partly influenced by the cover color. The preference given to cool and warm colors and the speed of decision making show certain differences across genders and age groups. The result contributes to knowing how to create book covers more adopted to reader’s needs.

Abstract:
Cody’s Books, in Berkeley, California, had its roots during the mid-1950s in the left-wing sympathies of its founders, the husband–wife team of Fred and Patricia Cody. Serving the University of California nearby, the much admired bookstore became a hangout and haven for intellectually curious students and faculty. In the social protest movements of the 1960s, the store functioned as a refuge from street violence as students and police clashed outside. When long-term employee Andy Ross bought the shop upon the Codys’ retirement, it was a thriving business but soon ran into challenges from encroaching chain stores and the emergence of online shopping. Ross responded variously: sometimes with ambitious, effective bookselling tactics, sometimes with ineffective resentment towards consumers who had abandoned the store. Attempts to survive through risky refinancing and the infusion of foreign investment money to support expansion into San Francisco all backfired. The last Cody’s branch closed ignominiously in 2008.

Abstract:
Departing from Marshal McLuhan’s analysis of the impact of print books on the mental and social environment of readers, Arjen Mulder reflects on the possible mental and social effects of the e-book as a new medium. The e-book, as carrier of an immaterial text, allows the reader to change its lay-out, font and other design elements. Additionally, e-books contain not just one single novel but an entire library and even contain an online bookstore. Another prominent effect of e-books is that they cause discrepancies between the actual reading experience and the user experience of the medium. Mulder also analyses some of the disadvantages of this new medium due to its technical properties. These concern for instance the integrity of the text, the unreliability of the technology, or the fact that providers can without any permission reinitialise your e-reader and therewith delete your entire e-book library. Mulder concludes with a discussion of the different reading modes available to readers to read print and electronic texts.

Abstract:
AbstractChildren’s books involve a large number of topics. Research on them has been paid much attention to by both scholars and practitioners. However, the existing achievements do not focus on China, which is the fastest growing market for children’s books in the world. Studies using quantitative analysis are low in number, especially on the intellectual structure, evolution patterns, and development trends of topics of children’s bestsellers in China. Dangdang.com, the biggest Chinese online bookstore, was chosen as a data source to obtain children’s bestsellers, and topic words in them were extracted from brief introductions. With the aid of co-occurrence theory and tools of social network analysis and visualization, the distribution, correlation structures, and evolution patterns of topics were revealed and visualized. This study shows that topics of Chinese children’s bestsellers are broad and relatively concentrated, but their distribution is unbalanced. There are four distinguished topic communities (Living, Animal, World, and Child) in terms of centrality and maturity, and they all establish their individual systems and tend to be mature. The evolution of these communities tends to be stable with powerful continuity.

Abstract:
Randomized storage strategy is known as a best practice for storing books of an online bookstore, it simplifies the order picking strategy as to retrieve books in purchase orders from closest locations of the warehouse. However, to be more responsive to customers, many distribution centers have adopted a just-in-time strategy leading to various value-added activities such as kitting, labelling, product or order assembly, customized packaging, or palletization, all of which must be scheduled and integrated in the order-picking process, and this is known as wave planning. In this study, we present a wave planning mathematical model by simultaneously consider: (1) time window from master of schedule (MOS), (2) random storage stock-keeping units (SKUs), and (3) picker-to-order. A conceptual simulation, along with a simplified example for the proposed wave planning algorithm, has been examined to demonstrate the merits of the idea. The result shows the wave planning module can improve the waiting time for truck loading of packages significantly and can reduce the time that packages are heaping in buffer area. The main contribution of this research is to develop a mixed integer programming model that helps the bookseller to generate optimal wave picking lists for a given time window.

Abstract:
Even in an age of digital research, printed books that can be held in one’shands and read are far from being relics of the past. This is doubly true inthe restricted environment of an American prison, where access to theInternet is out of bounds but books may be obtained through mail order orprison libraries. This publication seeks to overcome this Internet access gapby printing questions from an online Prison Q &A Forum as a slim booklet. It represents the new challenge posed by the fatwa-on-line phenomena, itsinfluence in diverse settings, and the complexities of conflicting notions ofreligious authority. Eighty questions, purportedly from incarcerated Muslimsin American prisons, are answered by thirteen shaykhs and publishedby a bookstore, self-described as “revolutionizing authentic salafee publishing”(back cover).Numerous questions in this booklet are familiar toMuslim prison chaplains, who are professionally trained to prioritize and negotiate religiousaccommodation within correctional institutions. For example, Question 11reads: “I am locked in the cell with another Muslim and there is not enoughroom for us to pray side-by-side. Can we then pray with one of us in frontof the other?” (p. 19). One shaykh says that it is permissible to do so becauseof the situation, reflecting the principle that necessity may alter prescribedritual requirements. However, addressing this and other questions without an ...

Abstract:
Abstract Imagine you are casually browsing an online bookstore, looking for an interesting novel. Suppose the store predicts you will want to buy a particular novel: the one most chosen by people of your same age, gender, location, and occupational status. The store recommends the book, it appeals to you, and so you choose it. Central to this scenario is an automated prediction of what you desire. This article raises moral concerns about such predictions. More generally, this article examines the ethics of artificial social cognition—the ethical dimensions of attribution of mental states to humans by artificial systems. The focus is presumptuous aim attributions, which are defined here as aim attributions based crucially on the premise that the person in question will have aims like superficially similar people. Several everyday examples demonstrate that this sort of presumptuousness is already a familiar moral concern. The scope of this moral concern is extended by new technologies. In particular, recommender systems based on collaborative filtering are now commonly used to automatically recommend products and information to humans. Examination of these systems demonstrates that they naturally attribute aims presumptuously. This article presents two reservations about the widespread adoption of such systems. First, the severity of our antecedent moral concern about presumptuousness increases when aim attribution processes are automated and accelerated. Second, a foreseeable consequence of reliance on these systems is an unwarranted inducement of interpersonal conformity.

Abstract:
Online shopping is gradually becoming popular in the developing countries like India. The online bookstores have emerged as a new destination which attracts millions of shoppers every day. The impulse buying in the offline stores has been a major area of interest for the researchers. But with the boom in online shopping, there is a scope to study the different aspects of impulse buying in online stores. This paper presents the study of various aspects of online impulse buying viz. hedonic shopping, website quality, trust, situational factors and variety seeking in Indian context. With the data collected from the online survey method the different antecedents of impulse buying have been analysed and reported on the basis of their significance. The hedonic shopping was found to be the major factor influencing impulse buying in online bookstores. This study also discusses about the managerial issues, suggestions and implications for the future researchers. The understanding of the behavior of the online shoppers in terms of their impulsive behavior would be helpful for the marketers and academicians.

Abstract:
The flourish of internet technology has contributed to the trend of online shopping but also threatened the operation of brick-and-mortar channels. This study investigated how bookstores can use experiential value to influence the repurchase behavior of consumers from the perspective of experiential value. The significant findings of this study are as follows. 1). When channel type is not considered, the experiential values playfulness, escapism, and educational experiences are the most crucial elements for the achievement of flow. 2). Playfulness, educational experiences, and customer return on investment are relatively more important for flow inducement in online channels, while the hedonic experiential values playfulness, escapism, and aesthetics are more prominent in offline channels. This shows that playfulness is an extremely crucial strategic experiential value for bookstores. 3). The analysis of moderating effect revealed that aesthetics and service excellence can give brick-and-mortar channels a unique advantage under the threat of online channels. This study included brick-and-mortar channels, unlike past studies that focused on online channels. We believe that the findings, managerial implications, and suggestions in this study are particularly meaningful and valuable for brick-and-mortar stores, which are in gradual decline.
