Abstract:
Over the past two centuries concepts of love, as well as the nature of intimate relations, have undergone modifications. Along with these modifications, the language of desire, the text type of the love letter and love-letter writing practice have changed as well. It is therefore surprising that certain elements of the correspondence between prospective brides and grooms of the nineteenth-century bourgeoisie seem today to be enjoying a comeback on the Internet. Some of the parameters, however, have changed. This essay will explore the similarities and differences of intimate literacy from a historical and pragmatic point of view. On the one hand it will discuss the text type in its pragmatic, textual, stylistic and medial aspects, and on the other hand it will focus on a number of distinct writing practices. The essay arises from a larger book project that investigates the interrelations among literary, social and technological change and persistence. In the context of this larger project, I have assembled a corpus of more than 7,500 love letters (letters, postcards, telegrams, e-mails and text messages) in the Zurich Love Letter Archive (ZLA). The empirical materials discussed here are drawn from this archive.

Abstract:
Social media and Facebook in particular have become an important arena of social interaction and premarital romance in Egypt. In a society where dating can potentially harm the reputation of young women, a decent public image is considered valuable symbolic capital. This is especially true for brides-to-be. Many university-educated young women have found Facebook useful for impression management. It is necessary for them to mask aspects of their behavior that may be condemned as morally inappropriate and they have thus developed strategies for navigating through certain moral expectations about female sexual purity, virginity and modesty. I define the young women who edit their profiles in order to conform to the prevailing norms of decency, in Goffman’s terms, as ‘cynical performers’. As I show, the embellishment of the self is a pragmatic solution to the problem of coping with existing dating practices and conflicting norms of proper gender interaction, often understood as ‘Islamic’.

Abstract:
The advent of online matrimony ushered in a new era of matchmaking in the wake of globalisation. This paper aims to examine the impact of globalisation on Hindu–Bengali matrimony. The study attempts to find out the impact of online matrimony on marriages in Kolkata. On the basis of personal interviews and content analysis of advertisements in newspapers and online matrimonial websites, the study shows the impact of globalisation on the institution of marriage. The paper argues that globalisation has not made potential changes in the process of selection of prospective brides and grooms. The newspapers and online portals function as the twin matchmakers in contemporary Kolkata, with little difference from the way traditional matchmakers used to work. The paper examines the fate and impact of technology when introduced in deeply entrenched traditional social institutions. The increase in the pool of selection of mates has reinforced patriarchal ties with globalisation adjusting itself in a tradition-bound society, putting tradition and technology in a curious and cumbersome paradox.

Abstract:
E-government services or systems aim to improve the quality of services, enabling time and effort savings in government administration. The use of e-government services is not limited to the millennials, but also the people who were laymen of a system. Besides, millennials who sometimes still use information from parents or others who have used the previous system can use the information to miss the benefits of the system that has been done online so that the effort to use the system is low. This research is about online marriage registration services on the Simkah web application owned by the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia because there are still many prospective brides or people who have not used the online service. The model used is to combine the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2) model and the modified IS DeLone and McLean (D&M) success model and consider moderating age, gender, and internet experience. In this study, it is necessary to know whether the constructor factors in the UTAUT2 model and the D&M model influence the intention to use online marriage registration services. The study was conducted in Sleman Regency. The construct finding that affects the intention to use online marriage registration services is hedonic motivation so the Ministry of Religion needs to increase hedonic motivation or mean it as an impulse in someone to use something.

Abstract:
In this fast-paced era, the need for precise, fast, and accurate information is something that must be done. Effectiveness and efficiency should be carried out according to needs so that the information can be relevant to its users. Thus, the registration information system, which has been manual in agencies or organizations, can be changed to online with accurate and timely data. Likewise, the Tamansari Religious Affairs Office in Bogor Regency. The current marriage registration system at the Tamansari Bogor Regency Office of Religious Affairs is no longer in line with the current development. The current system does not use computers as data processing tools, the results are still not well structured. Especially for processing the data of the prospective bride and groom. In this system, what is processed is registration data, bridal data, guardian data, witness data, admin data, and other data. The problem that occurs at this time is that the processed data feels slow, the resulting report has to pass data collection several times. In the information system to fulfill this final project, we will explain how to design and build a web-based marriage registration information system. The tools used in designing this system are MySQL, Entity Relational Diagrams, and Data Flow Diagrams, while for data collection using observation, interviews, and literature study. Meanwhile, database application development tools use MySQL and the programming language uses PHP. From this application, the benefits of data processing of brides, guardians, witnesses, etc. will be automatically obtained. Reports can also help by showing what is needed to process data quickly and easily. Keyword: Sistem Informasi, PHP My Admin, MySQL, Website, Entity Relational Diagram dan Data Flow Diagram

Abstract:
Online sirri marriage is a marriage which is organized through skype or other social media without documentation from the marriage registration council. So far, the practice of online sirri marriage in Indonesia is very apprehensive and to be serious problem in the society. It happened because the regulation that control marriage which is stated in law (UU) of marriage and compilation of Islamic law tend to be ignored. The requirement of the guardian (Wali) as regulated by Islamic law is ignored. However, the online sirri marriage is organized by involving marriage celebrant (penghulu) as magistrate guardian (wali hakim) who married off which is not detected by the woman's parents, her guardian, and marriage registrar. The practice of online siri marriage is performed by using skype media and other social media that the face of penghulu and the two brides can be seen directly. The consequences that will arise are uncertainty of law and law protection, especially for women and children who could not claim their rights when family conflict occurred. This kind of marriage is legal (sah) when it is implemented in accordance with the rules and prerequisites in Islamic law. However, the phenomenon of sirri marriage which is performed arbitrarily contradicts the Islamic law, because the completeness one of the pillars of marriage that is involvement of guardians is not fulfilled as well as many mafsadah occurs. In addition, online sirri marriage is also not recognized by the state, because it could not be proven by the marriage certificate.

Abstract:
Petra Heyse – Departement Taalkunde (IPrA Research Center), Universiteit Antwerpen, Belgium. Email: petra.heyse@gmail.com This article draws on a broader research project that scrutinizes online / offline representational practices on transnational matchmaking websites featuring so-called 'Russian brides'. The central research question is: how are recurrent online representations related to gender (in intersection with other identity categories) co-constructed in the daily interactions between matchmaking staff and female clients on the floor of a marriage agency. To these aims, the researcher conducted participant observation in a transnational marriage agency in a Russian city and used linguistic ethnographic methodologies. The analysis for this article concentrates on the routine argumentative strategies that are used by matchmaking personnel to legitimate their intermediating role to Russian-speaking female clients in the case agency on the basis of in-depth interviews with agency staff and female clients. The analysis of discursive positioning in interviews with translators and female clients sheds light on the social order that is discursively created. This order is functional in defining and reproducing the commercial dependencies between matchmaking staff and female clients in a transnational globalized industry. This study demonstrates the way in which: (a) matchmaking personnel in the case study constructs subject positions in discourse – i. e. of transnational matchmaking experts and of female clients – by drawing on commonsensical public discourses of difference that encompass gender, age and nationality, and (b) matchmaking personnel affiliates with its clients by conceiving the matchmaking approach as an increasingly popular genre of self-improvement for Russian-speaking women.

The developments that were experienced in the communication and technology area made Internet an important part of the daily life. In this respect, with the development of Internet, the changes in the social structure are closely connected with the lifestyles, attitudes, and behaviors of the people. In the study, the phenomena of virtual fellow wife and polygamy are researched and analyzed. A qualitative research, which is based on the observation fundamentally and richened with a survey and in-depth interviews, is carried out in accordance with the ethnographic research that is used in this study. The behavior-oriented observations are performed and the oral reports are arranged with the requirements that the research is performed in the natural environment. In the research, we see that two arguments such as “I have been never remorseful because I am brought/I come as a fellow wife virtually” and “Bringing a fellow wife is not a question, it is our tradition” showed the highest attitudes.

Abstract:
In order to reach nearly Zero Energy Buildings, a thorough design must be given in designing proper junctions, which will overall reduce the impact of the thermal bridges on the thermal performance of the building envelope. It is well-known that a thermal bridge is a weak thermal area of the building envelope through which increased heat losses occur. For the thermal bridges' evaluation, several numerical simulation software exist on the market, but their usage implies knowledge regarding the numerical modelling and simulation using various numerical methods (i.e. finite element method, finite difference methods, and others). Due to time constraint, designers use thermal bridges atlases that provide values for the linear heat transfer coefficient for several types of thermal bridges. Nevertheless, the multitude of existing thermal bridges requires more and more atlases which are not feasible in elaborating, due to time constraints. In order to respond to this demand, the authors developed a software for the modelling and simulation of thermal bridges that can be easily accessed by practitioners. The paper presents the software its components and the way that the user can interact with it.

Abstract:
The use of a participant survey, administered at the outset of an online course, can provide information useful in the management of the learning environment and in its subsequent redesign. Such information can clarify participants’ prior experience, expectations, and demographics. But the very act of enquiring about the learner also signals the instructor’s social presence, relational interest, and desire to enter into an authentic dialogue. This study examines the use of participant surveys in online management courses. The first section discusses the informational bridges that this instrument provides. The second section considers survey responses to open-ended questions dealing with student sentiments. This analysis suggests that the survey plays a valuable part in accentuating social presence and in initiating relational bridges with participants.

Abstract:
Smart film crack monitoring method, which can be used for detecting initiation, length, width, shape, location, and propagation of cracks on real bridges, is proposed. Firstly, the fabrication of the smart film is developed. Then the feasibility of the method is analyzed and verified by the mechanical sensing character of the smart film under the two conditions of normal strain and crack initiation. Meanwhile, the coupling interference between parallel enameled wires of the smart film is discussed, and then low-frequency detecting signal and the custom communication protocol are used to decrease interference. On this basis, crack monitoring system with smart film is designed, where the collected crack data is sent to the remote monitoring center and the cracks are simulated and recurred. Finally, the monitoring system is applied to six bridges, and the effects are discussed.

Abstract:
Large span bridges are very important infrastructure of the nations. The enormous investment and significance in state economy make them get more and more recognition. At present, the technology of the safety monitoring of bridges is becoming a hotspot in both academic and engineering field. Now, safety monitoring systems of the structures have been applied to many large bridges in the world. Among all these parameters which can indicate the safety status of bridges, the deflection is indispensable. Although there are lots of sensors now used to measure the degrees of the deflection, it is still very scarce that the sensors can be made for long-distance, real-time and automatic online completely. The photo-electricity and liquid level deflection sensors (PLLD) introduced here are cheaper and of better-automaticity and higher precision and can work online continuously without contact. This paper will show the structure, performance and theory of our new sensor based on ARM7 in detail. In the end, a concrete application instance in XiaoGou bridge of ShanXi province will be given.

This article introduces a youth-initiated practice: online social networking that is transforming our society in important ways and has vast implications for research concerning online behavior, the social and psychological aspects of online learning and the institution of education. In this paper, the author introduces the socio-technical features that characterize social networking systems and outlines results from preliminary research that suggests the informal social and intellectual practices in which participants naturally engage and how these relate to the competencies increasingly valued in formal education. The paper outlines four overlapping categories for research such as activities and outcomes, tool, place, and medium, identity and communication, and network analytics and methods. Within these categories the author outlines interesting research questions to pursue in documenting and interpreting the complexity of ‘learning’ within these spaces. Goals are to catalyze inquiry that bridges informal and formal learning and stimulate interdisciplinary conversation about where such agendas fit within and advance learning research.

Abstract:
The current research aim was to develop a constructive model for assessing web-based and electronic learning as an attempt to build bridges of trust in web-based and e-learning outcomes. The proposed model was developed in the light of the learning assumptions of the constructive theory and the cognitive theory. The targeted model – the Bridges of Trust Model – includes four levels of assessment: assessment of awareness, assessment of initiative, assessment of depth of meaning, and assessment of meaning construction. Within these levels, the researcher presented six processes reflecting the types of constructive assessment of web-based and e-learning. These types are: 1) assessment of manipulations, 2) assessment of outcomes, 3) assessment of cooperation, 4) assessment of transformation, 5) assessment of context, and 6) assessment of reflection. The model was piloted on a sample of students in the distance teaching and training program in the Arabian Gulf University. The pilot study proved that the model is valid and generalizable. In addition, this paper will be of benefit to people looking for pedagogical applications of web-based and electronic learning environments for developing multiple ways to express what online learners should know and be able to do.

Abstract:
Realizing online intelligent identification of bridge modal parameters requires not only the adaptive decomposition of structural response signals but also the enforcement of the automatic identification of modal parameters. Therefore, in this paper, the signal decomposition algorithm-ensemble empirical mode decomposition algorithm (EEMD) is improved to fulfill the above task. First, the adaptive matching algorithm is introduced to deal with the endpoint effect; second, the method of classification is used to avoid modal aliasing. Finally, an index for filtering the effective intrinsic mode function (IMF) components is constructed to realize automatic screening and signal reconstruction of the effective IMF components. At the same time, the first derivative of the singular entropy increment is used to automatically determine the order of the system, and then the spectral clustering algorithm is combined with the stochastic subspace algorithm to ultimately reach the goal of automatic identification of modal parameters.

Abstract:
Academic studies offer a generally positive portrait of the effect of customer relationship management (CRM) on firm performance, but practitioners question its value. The authors argue that a firm's strategic commitments may be an overlooked organizational factor that influences the rewards for a firm's investments in CRM. Using the context of online retailing, the authors consider the effects of two key strategic commitments of online retailers on the performance effect of CRM: their bricks-and-mortar experience and their online entry timing. They test the proposed model with a multimethod approach that uses manager ratings of firm CRM and strategic commitments and third-party customers' ratings of satisfaction from 106 online retailers. The findings indicate that firms with moderate bricks-and-mortar experience are better able to leverage CRM for superior customer satisfaction outcomes than firms with either low or high bricks-and-mortar experience. Likewise, firms with moderate online experience are better able to leverage CRM into superior customer satisfaction outcomes than firms with either low or high online experience. These findings help resolve disparate results about the value of CRM, and they establish the importance of examining CRM within the strategic context of the firm.

Abstract:
This article presents the data collected through an online survey of experts in the field of roadway and bridge inspection and repair, with an aim to understand and characterize post-hazard restoration timelines. Accurate characterization of natural hazard resilience of a community requires a thorough understanding of the restoration process. However, empirical data are lacking to systematically relate damage induced by multiple hazards to functionality for both roadways and bridges. Existing models, relying on survey data which are tailored for seismic damage to bridges, either fail to capture the entire restoration timeline or do not account for intermediate stages of restoration. To address these gaps, an online survey of experts eliciting recommended traffic closures and the estimated time required to remove traffic closures/partial restrictions is presented herein. This article contains a detailed description of the survey methodology with insights into the data collected from a total of 29 respondents to enable its use in the area of transportation infrastructure risk and resilience analysis under natural hazards.

Abstract:
The authors have analyzed two months of log data and 100 surveys on the phone use of a Swedish online community for teenagers to investigate the mobile use of an established online service. This shows that the phone use mostly takes place during times of the day when teenagers have social time and the use is not influenced by the availability of a computer. The phone makes the community access more private compared to the computer, but teens do share the use when they want to. The cell phone bridges the online and offline social communities and allows teens to participate in both at the same time. The online community is not only a place for social activity online; it is also a social activity offline that is carried out face-to-face with friends. Thus, the cell phone was a tool for the teens to combine their participation in the online and the offline world.

Abstract:
AbstractAs mechanical simulations play an increasingly role in engineering projects, an appropriate integration of simulations into design-oriented product development processes is essential for efficient collaboration. To identify and overcome barriers between design and simulation departments, the BRIDGES approach was elaborated for barrier reduction in design engineering and simulation. This paper shows the industrial evaluation of the approach using a multi-method study of an online survey and focus group workshops. The experts' assessments were statistically analysed to build a connection matrix of barriers and recommendations. 59 participants from multiple industries with practical experience in the field contributed to the online survey, while 24 experts could be acquired for the focus group workshops. As a result of the workshops, both the data-based and the workshop-based part of the BRIDGES approach were assessed as beneficial to raise the efficiency of collaboration and practically applicable. This provides an empirically secured connection of barriers and suitable recommendations, allowing companies to identify and overcome collaboration barriers between design and simulation.

Abstract:
Services originally developed as natural concentrations of human activity, reflecting the Christallerian hierarchy of central places. Today, those natural mechanisms are challenged by strong competition from online facilities. More and more services are offered by the internet and this affects the traditional ‘bricks-and-mortar' urban development. In this article, the main research problems of the inter-relatedness of real and virtual environments are defined in the context of urban neighbourhood service centres. The process of conversion from offline services into online ones is treated as a canvas for building a comprehensive research model for studying the development of the contemporary urban services sector in the local scale. Particular research questions and hypotheses are formulated and followed by a set of methods for further empirical research.

Abstract:
The deflection which reflects the bridge linear variety is an important parameter for the evaluation of bridge safety. According to the structural characteristics of urban bridges, the connected pipe optoelectronic liquid level sensor system is a novel kind of sensor for detecting the connected pipe liquid level, which can be applied for multipoint, long-period, online, remote, automatic measurement of bridge deflection, it is not affected by the dust, humidity and fog in the urban bridge health monitoring and maintenance. At present, the system has been integrated and applied in the project of main roads bridge Online Safety Monitoring Management System in Hangzhou (Phase II), a web-based urban bridge cluster monitoring system have been established since 2007. According to a tied arch bridge case studies, the measuring data show that the system not only can accurately collect the bridge normal deflection information and variety, but also successfully monitored the structural responses due to the Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, 2008. About two-minute abrupt changes in displacement amplitude were observed in the measured signals starting at 14:37, about 9 minutes later than the earthquake’s occurring. The results shows, it is an effective method for the real-time monitoring of urban bridge deflection.

Abstract:
PurposePersonality traits and perceived value have been the focus for research in online learning adoption. However, there is a lack of understanding of how the effects of perceived value on online learning adoption vary according to the different personality traits and the levels of a personality trait. This study explores the moderating roles of the Big Five personality traits (i.e. neuroticism, extraversion, conscientiousness, openness to experience, and agreeableness) in the relationships between the perceived value (i.e. value for money, quality, emotional value, and social value) and intention to study online courses.Design/methodology/approachA survey questionnaire was used to collect data from university students. This study used the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) method to measure the quality of the formative and reflective constructs and examine the moderating effects of the five personality traits in four models. The regression of intention to study online courses on the perceived value at the different levels of a personality trait was analyzed by the simple slope analysis approach.FindingsThe study found that particular personality traits moderate the relationships between the perceived value and intention to study online courses. Neuroticism and openness to experience have the moderating effects on the relationship between perceived value for money and intention to study online courses. Neuroticism is the only personality trait that moderates the effect of perceived emotional value on intention to study online courses. In addition, the different levels of a personality trait differentially moderate the effects of the perceived value on intention to study online courses.Originality/valueThis study is considered among the first research attempting to explore the moderating roles of the Big Five personality traits in the context of online learning adoption. It bridges the research gap in online learning literature and generalizes the impacts of perceived value on online learning adoption to the different personality traits and the levels of a personality trait. The results provide guidance for educational institutions to develop an effective online learning strategy by creating and communicating the right value propositions to the right group of students based on their personality traits.

Abstract:
The average age of bridges in operation and their accumulated damage are ever increasing, while design solutions of new bridges are increasingly complex. It is difficult to adequately reflect performance characteristics of these structures in design models. In order to prevent accidents during construction and operation, it is necessary to verify experimentally that the actual stress-strain behavior corresponds to design parameters. Special monitoring systems are developed and implemented to improve the operational reliability of structures. This study uses mathematical modeling and instrumental measurements to develop monitoring systems. A systematic approach has been implemented. The paper presents the results produced by modern automated measuring, recording and data processing equipment to provide online diagnostics and long-term status monitoring of bridge structures.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the predictors of game addiction based on loneliness, motivation and inter-personal competence using the samples of college students recruited from South Korea (n=251). Design/methodology/approach The authors examined the underlying mechanism of game addiction by testing a moderated mediation model, in which inter-personal competence moderated the mediation model of loneliness, regulatory focus and online game addiction. First, the authors clarified the relationship among loneliness, motivation and inter-personal competence, to understand the influences of loneliness on other variables in this study (mediation test). Second, the authors examined the underlying mechanism of game addiction by testing a moderated mediation model, in which inter-personal competence moderated the mediation model of loneliness, regulatory focus and online game addiction (moderated mediation). Findings Regulatory focus mediated the effect of loneliness on online game addiction. Moderated mediation analyses using PROCESS confirmed that inter-personal competence significantly buffered the indirect effect of loneliness (through regulatory focus) on online game addiction. The findings indicated that inter-personal competence accounted for significant differences in the mediation models. Originality/value This study bridges the gap in the online game addiction literature by explaining how loneliness is associated with online game addiction.

Abstract:
Statistical learning (SL) is the ability to extract regularities from the environment. In the domain of language, this ability is fundamental in the learning of words and structural rules. In lack of reliable online measures, statistical word and rule learning have been primarily investigated using offline (post-familiarization) tests, which gives limited insights into the dynamics of SL and its neural basis. Here, we capitalize on a novel task that tracks the online SL of simple syntactic structures combined with computational modeling to show that online SL responds to reinforcement learning principles rooted in striatal function. Specifically, we demonstrate—on 2 different cohorts—that a temporal difference model, which relies on prediction errors, accounts for participants’ online learning behavior. We then show that the trial-by-trial development of predictions through learning strongly correlates with activity in both ventral and dorsal striatum. Our results thus provide a detailed mechanistic account of language-related SL and an explanation for the oft-cited implication of the striatum in SL tasks. This work, therefore, bridges the long-standing gap between language learning and reinforcement learning phenomena.

Abstract:
Previous research suggests that language comprehenders are sensitive to the presence of focus-sensitive particles—words like only and not that are effective at marking the focus of the sentence. In addition to signalling linguistic focus, these words can also establish a semantic contrast between the focused element and an alternate set. For example, the phrase not only the bride places linguistic focus on the bride and may also prompt comprehenders to anticipate a set of upcoming entities that stand in semantic contrast to the bride. We tested this possibility in an eyetracking-while-reading experiment that systematically crossed structure (focus vs. noun-phrase coordination) with predictability of an upcoming target noun (predictable vs. unpredictable). Whereas first-pass reading time showed a robust predictability effect for the coordination condition, the effect was eliminated for the focus condition. Later eyetracking measures revealed main effects of both predictability and syntactic structure. Overall, the results suggest that language comprehenders rapidly make use of the cue not only and may use this cue to begin anticipating a set of upcoming sentence continuations during online sentence processing.

Abstract:
Fitness clubs have never ceased searching for quality improvement opportunities to better serve their exercisers, whereas exercisers have been posting online ratings and reviews regarding fitness clubs. Studied together, the quantitative rating and qualitative review can provide a comprehensive depiction of exercisers’ perception of fitness clubs. However, the typological and dimensional discrepancies of online rating and review have hindered the joint study of the two data sets to fully exploit their business value. To this end, this study bridges the gap by examined 53,979 pairs of exerciser online rating and review from 100 fitness clubs in Shanghai, China. Using latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) based text mining, we identified the 17 major topics on which the exercisers were writing. A support vector machine (SVM) classifier was then employed to establish the rating-review relations, with an accuracy rate of up to 86%. Finally, the relative impact of each topic on exerciser satisfaction was computed and compared by introducing virtual reviews. The significance of this study is that it systematically creates a standardized protocol of mining and correlating the massive structured/quantitative and unstructured/qualitative data available online, which is readily transferable to the other service and product sectors.
