Abstract:
Currently, online encyclopedias have become the main source of encyclopedic knowledge all over the world. Russia is somewhat behind the leading countries in this area. The Russian-language Wikipedia has been developing more or less on a par with its neighbors. However, recently, unfortunately, anti-Russian articles began to appear there, which is why a group of wiki editors had to distance themselves from Wikipedia and initiate the creation of a new encyclopedia independent of it – Runiversalis. The Great Russian Encyclopedia, which is moving belatedly to the Internet, shows the still modest results. The article suggests certain solutions designed to intensify the reorganization of online encyclopedias and provide an additional level of comfort for the reader. Emphasis is placed on the need for permanent operational updating of articles posted on the web and the role of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the creation of encyclopedias.

The article describes the phenomenon of the electronic encyclopedia activity and investigates the electronic Internet encyclopedias created by the institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. It has been discovered that electronic encyclopedias can be divided into several varieties, the main of which is online encyclopedias, which are highly distinguished in comparison with classical printed publications by the characteristics caused by the development of information technology. In accordance with this division, the national academic encyclopedic resources are characterized in the article. The idea of the importance of creating an online encyclopedia about the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is presented; it also argued that current online encyclopedias are not fully equipped with a wide range of technological opportunities for their use.

The analysis of online encyclopedias in the Ukrainian information space is done in this paper. It is investigated that online encyclopedias are divided into two large groups: digital analogues of printed editions, for example the online Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine, and independent encyclopedic web projects, among which the most popular is Wikipedia (one of the most visited sites in the Ukrainian information space). Despite the fact that electronic encyclopedias have a number of advantages, to refuse to print classical editions there are no grounds. For the development of the Ukrainian information space, it is important that any encyclopedia project aimed at making a printed product is also presented in an electronic version.

Abstract:
Reforming of education requires updating its content and methodological components, including didactic toolkits. In a broad sense, the proposed study is concerned with the design and implementation of a wide range of educational tools in the educational process. In a narrow sense, it identifies the opportunities and prospects of using encyclopedic online resources as a didactic toolkit. These issues are covered on the example of the e-version of The Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine. The idea of using electronic encyclopedias in the educational process is not new. Researchers suggest that thematic encyclopedias are very important in the teaching of certain subjects. The introduction of encyclopedias into teaching is a contemporary trend initiated by the publishers of the world’s largest encyclopedias. For example, the popular Encyclopedia Britannica has recently become available in three online versions: for primary school students (Britannica Kids), middle school students (Britannica Students), and high school students (Britannica Scholars). This study demonstrates that the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine a) can be a platform for providing encyclopedic knowledge in a subject; b) can be a didactic tool that increases the effectiveness of learning; c) can be used as a source of information for in-depth study of topics in various subjects. Thus, electronic encyclopedias (in particular the online-version of the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine) provide significant opportunities for successful study of educational material, focusing on the most important aspects of educational topics and creating conditions for systematization and generalization of information, as well as actively involving students in self-study, arousing their interest in learning and generally increasing their motivation.

Abstract:
Encyclopedism and its products, encyclopedias are an important form of knowledge organization system. Encyclopedias are deliberate cultural syntheses. Local online encyclopedias represent an emerging trend in the development of KOSs. The Encyclopedia of Milwaukee is one of the most recent additions to this trend. An interesting problem for research is how to visualize the domain of an evolving online encyclopedia. In this study, the base bibliography for one disciplinary cluster—education—is submitted to bibliometric domain analytical techniques. While parameters of a typical domain emerge, other atypical results also emerge, raising questions about the differences represented in encyclopedia domains as well as questions about the historical evolution of scholarship. Nonetheless, transitions in the evolution of the domain of education in Milwaukee, including increased author productivity and enhanced granularity, as well as local cultural distinction, clearly emerge.

Abstract:
The history of encyclopedias on the territory of Ukraine dates back to the Middle Ages. This article shows the timeline of the Ukrainian encyclopedic practice, from the earliest books with the word "encyclopedia" or its derivatives in titles to modern online resources. The authors have been focused their attention on only a few encyclopedias, although the total number of encyclopedias is quite large. The most complete sources with index of Ukrainian encyclopedic books have been mentioned, while noted that their list is far from complete; this fact actualizes the need to assemble a new bibliography of encyclopedic literature. Issues of compliance of books with "encyclopedia" (or derived words) in the title to the standards of this type of publication have been raised. To solve these ones, a high-quality evaluation and normative base is needed.

Abstract:
In this article, we present an analysis of the 10-volumed Australian Encyclopedia published in 1958. The purpose of the analysis is to identify encyclopedic information concerning the Ukrainian people. Since the late 19th century, a part of the Ukrainian ethnic group inhabits the Australian continent, so it is natural to expect the appearance of Ukrainians in encyclopedic publications of Australia. But do Australians mention Ukrainians in their own fundamental encyclopedias? This question is caused not only by the general interest, but also by the fact that Ukraine is shown in the national narratives of many countries through various myths generated by Soviet propaganda. Therefore, the analysis of the representation of Ukrainians in the pages of foreign encyclopedias is a topical issue of contemporary Ukrainian studies in general. In this study, we found that the main body of information about Ukrainians is statistical data about the Ukrainian community in Australia, which settled after the Second World War. Among the 10 volumes there are no mentions of Ukraine, its capital, prominent people of the nation, etc. In addition, general highlights of the Australian encyclopedia publishing sphere are proposed. It is noted that the Australian Encyclopedia as a fundamental work published in six editions during 1925–1996 is the main achievement of the Australian encyclopediography. It is noteworthy that there is currently no national online encyclopedia in Australia. At the same time, there are domain (subject-specific) publications by research teams among other achievements of contemporary Australian encyclopedia publishing, such as the Encyclopaedia of Aboriginal Australia, the Historical Encyclopedia of Western Australia, the Companion to Tasmanian History, etc.

Abstract:
碩士<br>輔仁大學<br>圖書資訊學系<br>91<br>The use of encyclopedia has played an important role in accumulating and gathering knowledge about human civilization. Different from traditional paper-based encyclopedias, online encyclopedias integrate the use of Internet and multimedia technology to create a dynamic reading environment for their users. How people actually interact with the online encyclopedias become critical to the design issue. In this study, the Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia Online (GMEOL) was used as a case to explore the interface design of multimedia encyclopedias online. Observations and interviews were used for assessing qualitative data. From the results, it was found that the factors that influenced learning and use of the systems might include students’ experience of using computers and Internet, their searching strategies and language obstacles. Influenced by their experiences of using various websites, most users preferred vivid interface design and interactivity of hypermedia. The use of multimedia presentation was also considered essential in using online encyclopedias. Compared with paper-based encyclopedia, users preferred GMEOL because it was user-friendly, with the use of multimedia interface, and easy to update at any time. However, users considered paper-based encyclopedias were irreplaceable by online one. For long-term learning and a large number of reading as well as deliberation and editing, people were more accustomed to traditional paper-based reading. Concluded from the study, there is still some room for improving the user interface of GMEOL. The results of the study also reflect a need for further research and development in future interface design of GMEOL.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中央大學<br>網路學習科技研究所<br>104<br>Rare diseases affect patients’ quality of their daily life. For example, people with achondroplasia (i.e., little people) need to face a lot of difficulties in their daily life due to their small bodies. Nevertheless, the symptoms of the little people are not so serious as those of people with other rare diseases. Thus, the little people are still able to look after themselves if proper training is provided for them. On the other hand, the little people with young ages need to be attended by their family. Thus, the little people’s family also need sufficient information so that they can know how to take care of the little people. To this end, this study developed online encyclopedias with multimedia technologies and digital games to help the little people and their family solve problems that they met in their daily life. More specifically, the multimedia technologies provide multiple types of information to sort out problems about little people’s daily life. On the other hand, digital games emphasize on interactivity and entertainment that people can experience when they solve problems related to little people’s daily life. However, the little people and their family play different roles. The little people play as patients while their families are caregivers. In other words, the little people and their families may have different reactions to these two online encyclopedias. To this end, this study aims to investigate how the little people and their family react to the online multimedia encyclopedia (OME) and online game-based encyclopedia (OGBE), in terms of learning behavior, learning motivation and learning perception. Regarding the results from the OME, the family had better learning motivation than the little people. Furthermore, the little people preferred to use the search mechanism to locate specific information about little people’s daily life while their family preferred to find more information about little people’s daily life. In addition, the little people were concerned with their professional development while the family needs more information about medical care. Regarding the results from the OGBE, the little people and their family demonstrated similar reactions, in terms of learning motivation and perception, but they had different reactions to the background music. The little people thought that the background music was enjoyable whereas the family indicated that the background music distracted their thinking. Finally, two frameworks are produced based on the results obtained from these two online encyclopedias. These frameworks can be applied to help learners, researchers, and designers to promote the developments of other online encyclopedias for rare diseases.

Abstract:
Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements of the Master of Technology Degree in Information Technology, Durban University of Technology, Durban, South Africa, 2014.<br>This study aimed to explore user factors that may influence attitude and behaviour where technology acceptance is concerned. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) Framework was used as a tool to map this degree of acceptance in relation to the design of the current Encyclopaedia of South African Arts, Culture and Heritage (ESAACH). ESAACH is an encyclopaedia intended to address the dearth of reference material in South African arts, culture and heritage studies (ESAACH.org.za). The encyclopaedia is divided into broader areas of research such as: verbal arts, performing arts, visual arts, and heritage. It was originally established as a tool to provide support for education in arts, culture and heritage. There has been an increase in interest in the ESAACH online resource platform. This has resulted in the need to capture user perceptions and attitudes on the site in order to provide guidelines on the improvement of the site and to make usage of the encyclopaedia easier and less frustrating. The researcher investigates English Language Proficiency, Perceived Ease of Use and Perceived Usefulness and Computer Self-Efficacy as factors that influence an online user’s attitude towards intention to use and acceptance of an online encyclopaedia. There have been concerns expressed by website designers that because users may not be fully acquainted or familiar with using the Internet in general when accessing information, they anticipate some resistance or reluctance to make full use of available online content. The study included the administration of an online survey to a sample of 149 students from the Arts and Design and Library Information Studies departments whereby their demographics, antecedents and precedent constructs of the TAM were tested for co-relationships of user’s intention regarding usage and acceptance of the website. The TAM model was used as a tool to determine: whether a positive confidence in the students’ English language proficiency would affect intention to use the encyclopaedia and to predict whether positive Computer Self-Efficacy is an indicator for a positive effect regarding Ease of Use and/or Perceived Usefulness. Results confirmed that users perceived Computer Self-Efficacy as a positive contributor to the usefulness of the ESAACH online encyclopaedia. Although no significant relationship between English Language Proficiency and Perceived Ease of Use was demonstrated, the need for a design which caters for sensitivity to the language of users was identified.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>圖書資訊學研究所<br>99<br>This study attempts to compare online encyclopedias in a quantitative approach, and conducts three important research designs. One is choosing research targets, that is, Wikipedia and Knol. After deciding the encyclopedis, researcher analyzes and presents their differences. The second step is developing 6 indices, including page views per year, text words, readability, cited numbers per year, citation numbers, and citation types. These indices represent the popularity of the topics, content richness, readability levels, use how much sources to write articles, and width (percentage) and depth (assess) of the citations, respectively. The third step is setting up two main sampling rules, which sample the same topics and choose the high quality articles. According to the sampling rules, totally 20 topics are selected. Finally, the researcher compares the differences using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, suggests the ways to improve systems and construct articles. The research results show that page views per year, cited numbers per year, citation numbers, and impact factor are statistically significant based on confidence level at 0.95, but the remaining indices are not. The major findings are shown as follows. When it comes to page views per year and cited numbers per year, values of Wikipedia are higher. However, Wikipedia can be written by everyone, users must use it cautiously and need to cultivate the ability of identifying the authenticity of information to avoid absorbing wrong messages. Although Knol has already set up an assessment criterion, which emphasizes pageviews, reviews and comments, for selecting the best articles, and still has 8 articles without citations. Knol should take it as a serious problem and force to set up related standards. Besides, the readability of Wikipedia and Knol is 12. Due to American adult literacy survey, the readability of these topics is too high to read. Two encyclopedias have not yet set service objects which can depend on to adjust the degree of readability levels.

Aumer-Ryan, Paul R. "Information triage : dual-process theory in credibility judgments of web-based resources." Thesis, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2010-05-868.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation describes the credibility judgment process using social psychological theories of dual-processing, which state that information processing outcomes are the result of an interaction “between a fast, associative information- processing mode based on low-effort heuristics, and a slow, rule-based information processing mode based on high-effort systematic reasoning” (Chaiken & Trope, 1999, p. ix). Further, this interaction is illustrated by describing credibility judgments as a choice between examining easily identified peripheral cues (the messenger) and content (the message), leading to different evaluations in different settings. The focus here is on the domain of the Web, where ambiguous authorship, peer- produced content, and the lack of gatekeepers create an environment where credibility judgments are a necessary routine in triaging information. It reviews the relevant literature on existing credibility frameworks and the component factors that affect credibility judgments. The online encyclopedia (instantiated as Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica) is then proposed as a canonical form to examine the credibility judgment process. The two main claims advanced here are (1) that information sources are composed of both message (the content) and messenger (the way the message is delivered), and that the messenger impacts perceived credibility; and (2) that perceived credibility is tempered by information need (individual engagement). These claims were framed by the models proposed by Wathen & Burkell (2002) and Chaiken (1980) to forward a composite dual process theory of credibility judgments, which was tested by two experimental studies. The independent variables of interest were: media format (print or electronic); reputation of source (Wikipedia or Britannica); and the participant’s individual involvement in the research task (high or low). The results of these studies encourage a more nuanced understanding of the credibility judgment process by framing it as a dual-process model, and showing that certain mediating variables can affect the relative use of low-effort evaluation and high- effort reasoning when forming a perception of credibility. Finally, the results support the importance of messenger effects on perceived credibility, implying that credibility judgments, especially in the online environment, and especially in cases of low individual engagement, are based on peripheral cues rather than an informed evaluation of content.<br>text

Abstract:
Currently, online encyclopedias have become the main source of encyclopedic knowledge all over the world. Russia is somewhat behind the leading countries in this area. The Russian-language Wikipedia has been developing more or less on a par with its neighbors. However, recently, unfortunately, anti-Russian articles began to appear there, which is why a group of wiki editors had to distance themselves from Wikipedia and initiate the creation of a new encyclopedia independent of it - Runiversalis.
