Abstract:
Currently, online encyclopedias have become the main source of encyclopedic knowledge all over the world. Russia is somewhat behind the leading countries in this area. The Russian-language Wikipedia has been developing more or less on a par with its neighbors. However, recently, unfortunately, anti-Russian articles began to appear there, which is why a group of wiki editors had to distance themselves from Wikipedia and initiate the creation of a new encyclopedia independent of it – Runiversalis. The Great Russian Encyclopedia, which is moving belatedly to the Internet, shows the still modest results. The article suggests certain solutions designed to intensify the reorganization of online encyclopedias and provide an additional level of comfort for the reader. Emphasis is placed on the need for permanent operational updating of articles posted on the web and the role of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the creation of encyclopedias.

The analysis of online encyclopedias in the Ukrainian information space is done in this paper. It is investigated that online encyclopedias are divided into two large groups: digital analogues of printed editions, for example the online Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine, and independent encyclopedic web projects, among which the most popular is Wikipedia (one of the most visited sites in the Ukrainian information space). Despite the fact that electronic encyclopedias have a number of advantages, to refuse to print classical editions there are no grounds. For the development of the Ukrainian information space, it is important that any encyclopedia project aimed at making a printed product is also presented in an electronic version.

Abstract:
Reforming of education requires updating its content and methodological components, including didactic toolkits. In a broad sense, the proposed study is concerned with the design and implementation of a wide range of educational tools in the educational process. In a narrow sense, it identifies the opportunities and prospects of using encyclopedic online resources as a didactic toolkit. These issues are covered on the example of the e-version of The Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine. The idea of using electronic encyclopedias in the educational process is not new. Researchers suggest that thematic encyclopedias are very important in the teaching of certain subjects. The introduction of encyclopedias into teaching is a contemporary trend initiated by the publishers of the world’s largest encyclopedias. For example, the popular Encyclopedia Britannica has recently become available in three online versions: for primary school students (Britannica Kids), middle school students (Britannica Students), and high school students (Britannica Scholars). This study demonstrates that the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine a) can be a platform for providing encyclopedic knowledge in a subject; b) can be a didactic tool that increases the effectiveness of learning; c) can be used as a source of information for in-depth study of topics in various subjects. Thus, electronic encyclopedias (in particular the online-version of the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine) provide significant opportunities for successful study of educational material, focusing on the most important aspects of educational topics and creating conditions for systematization and generalization of information, as well as actively involving students in self-study, arousing their interest in learning and generally increasing their motivation.

Abstract:
Encyclopedism and its products, encyclopedias are an important form of knowledge organization system. Encyclopedias are deliberate cultural syntheses. Local online encyclopedias represent an emerging trend in the development of KOSs. The Encyclopedia of Milwaukee is one of the most recent additions to this trend. An interesting problem for research is how to visualize the domain of an evolving online encyclopedia. In this study, the base bibliography for one disciplinary cluster—education—is submitted to bibliometric domain analytical techniques. While parameters of a typical domain emerge, other atypical results also emerge, raising questions about the differences represented in encyclopedia domains as well as questions about the historical evolution of scholarship. Nonetheless, transitions in the evolution of the domain of education in Milwaukee, including increased author productivity and enhanced granularity, as well as local cultural distinction, clearly emerge.

Abstract:
The history of encyclopedias on the territory of Ukraine dates back to the Middle Ages. This article shows the timeline of the Ukrainian encyclopedic practice, from the earliest books with the word "encyclopedia" or its derivatives in titles to modern online resources. The authors have been focused their attention on only a few encyclopedias, although the total number of encyclopedias is quite large. The most complete sources with index of Ukrainian encyclopedic books have been mentioned, while noted that their list is far from complete; this fact actualizes the need to assemble a new bibliography of encyclopedic literature. Issues of compliance of books with "encyclopedia" (or derived words) in the title to the standards of this type of publication have been raised. To solve these ones, a high-quality evaluation and normative base is needed.

Abstract:
In this article, we present an analysis of the 10-volumed Australian Encyclopedia published in 1958. The purpose of the analysis is to identify encyclopedic information concerning the Ukrainian people. Since the late 19th century, a part of the Ukrainian ethnic group inhabits the Australian continent, so it is natural to expect the appearance of Ukrainians in encyclopedic publications of Australia. But do Australians mention Ukrainians in their own fundamental encyclopedias? This question is caused not only by the general interest, but also by the fact that Ukraine is shown in the national narratives of many countries through various myths generated by Soviet propaganda. Therefore, the analysis of the representation of Ukrainians in the pages of foreign encyclopedias is a topical issue of contemporary Ukrainian studies in general. In this study, we found that the main body of information about Ukrainians is statistical data about the Ukrainian community in Australia, which settled after the Second World War. Among the 10 volumes there are no mentions of Ukraine, its capital, prominent people of the nation, etc. In addition, general highlights of the Australian encyclopedia publishing sphere are proposed. It is noted that the Australian Encyclopedia as a fundamental work published in six editions during 1925–1996 is the main achievement of the Australian encyclopediography. It is noteworthy that there is currently no national online encyclopedia in Australia. At the same time, there are domain (subject-specific) publications by research teams among other achievements of contemporary Australian encyclopedia publishing, such as the Encyclopaedia of Aboriginal Australia, the Historical Encyclopedia of Western Australia, the Companion to Tasmanian History, etc.

We emphasize the Ukrainian children’s audience does not yet have a high-quality digital encyclopedia and, obviously, Vikidia could fill this gap. At the same time, it is important that Ukrainian children’s encyclopedias or the Ukrainian-language segments of international projects such as Vikidia provide contents aimed specifically at Ukrainian children (currently, the vast majority of published in Ukraine children’s encyclopedias is a kind of translated literature).

Abstract:
The article traces the history of library encyclopedias, focusing particularly on Ukraine. It highlights that the initial attempts to compile such library lexicons in Ukraine date back to the early 20th century, though systematic efforts in this sector only began in the second half of the century. At present, Ukraine hosts two online library encyclopedias, including the Ukrainian Library Encyclopedia and the Kharkiv Library Encyclopedia. The article examines the concept of library encyclopedistics as presented in Ukraine’s academic discourse, emphasizing its multifaceted interpretation: as a scholarly discipline (encyclopedia scholarship), a practical activity (encyclopedia assembling), and publishing achievements in the field of library science (the pool of library encyclopedias, as well as wealth of subject-specific knowledge). Additionally, the author outlines proposed pathways for Ukraine’s further advancing library encyclopedias, as well as the related scholarship. These include establishing a coordination center for library encyclopedias (library encyclopedistics) and developing a comprehensive web portal. This portal would serve as an information and search system dedicated to library science and feature reference content from both national and regional library encyclopedias.

Abstract:
Encyclopedic literature and dictionaries devoted to geological sciences were overviewed in the article. The authors emphasize the lack of basic Ukrainian geological encyclopedia and provide arguments for the necessity of its appearance. They substantiate the importance of dictionaries representing specific subject lexicon, in particular geological terminology: "Dictionary of Geological Terminology" (1923), "Russian-Ukrainian Geological Dictionary" (1959), "Russian-Ukrainian Dictionary of Geological Terms" (1993), "Russian-Ukrainian Geological dictionary" (2011), "Ukrainian-French-English Dictionary of Geology, Geophysics, Well Drilling, and Oil, & Gas industry" (2011), "Russian-Ukrainian Geological Dictionary" (2016), "Geological Dictionary: Open Educational and Scientific Web Resource" (2017), "Russian-Ukrainian Geological Dictionary" (2018), "Ukrainian-Russian-English Dictionary of Geological Terms" (2020), and other mineralogical, geodetic, mining, petrographic dictionaries. The results show that Ukrainian encyclopedic and lexicographic literature does not provide knowledge of all geological sciences despite a fairly large number of encyclopedias and dictionaries (in total, over 40 sources were found), as there are dictionaries and encyclopedias encompassing only some particular geological fields. The authors also reflect on the issue of the distribution of subject encyclopedias and dictionaries in educational sphere today, when Wikipedia is considered to be the most popular online reference work in the world. The authors conclude that it is necessary to build a modern geological encyclopedia as a unified Ukrainian language source of reliable reference knowledge on geology.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the 5th anniversary of the electronic version of The Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine (EMU) on the Internet (website: esu.com.ua). The study reveals the functions performed by the EMU can be better implemented due to its online version. These include accumulating of nationally relevant knowledge (about Ukraine, Ukrainians, Ukrainian phenomena and realities) and disseminating it in society, playing an important educational role, fostering patriotic feelings among Ukrainians based of this knowledge, understanding of national ideas, self-identifying, etc. The EMU website has high traffic, search engine positioning (Google), therefore, provides access to encyclopedic knowledge of a much larger audience than a printed version of this encyclopedia. The disadvantages of the online version of ESU are also highlighted. First of all, the words in the text are shortened like in paper encyclopedias, which have a reason to save space on the pages. There is also no English section. Today, English-language versions of the articles would contribute to destruct the stereotypes about Ukraine, its people, language, culture, history, etc., formed by the Soviet picture of the world (Pax Sovietica) as well as supported and deepened by followers of the Russian world (Pax Russica).

Abstract:
The aim of this article is to present the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine (Ukrainian: Entsyklopediia Suchasnoi Ukrainy) as one of the priority Ukrainian academic scholarly publications in the context of the ongoing Russian war against Ukraine, and to outline the editorial team’s priorities in responding to the new challenges of the time. The research methodology is based on the principles of historicism and consistency. General scholarly methods were used, including analysis, synthesis, description, and generalisation. The authors report on the peculiarities of preparing the paper volumes of the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine, emphasise the importance and necessity of producing a complete set of EMU volumes for the cultural development of the state and building the state’s information ecosystem. At the same time, they draw attention to the fact that paper encyclopedia publishing needs more funding than it currently has (in recent years, the shortage of funding has been compensated by reducing the quality of printing and the circulation of edition volumes). The article also covers the encyclopedia’s digital counterpart (EMU website as an online encyclopedia). In particular, it was found that the indicators of the online encyclopedia visits and pageviews are increasing every year. Moreover, in a turbulent 2022 of full-scale war, the website traffic was the highest ever. The language specificity of the online encyclopedia’s visitors is in the focus of the authors as well. The authors state that the war negatively impacts various spheres of life in Ukraine including academic encyclopedistics and suggest that the editorial and publishing process relating to the Encyclopedia of Modern Ukraine should be revised. It is concluded that it is economically expedient to focus on the EMU’s online version during the war. Along with this, there is a possibility of a complete blackout of Ukraine, which could be caused by Russian airstrikes on the country’s critical infrastructure. In such a situation, the editorial team’s planned direction for the next year(s) of activity regarding online encyclopedia development unfortunately seems problematic as well.

This article suggests that vetted urban encyclopedias need to revisit their roots as community enterprises and reimagine and reengage those connections in order to allow their vetted content to remain competitive with Wikipedia and other open-source online resources.

Wikipedia is the largest web-based digital encyclopedia today that contains almost all knowledge in general. On Wikipedia many readers have difficulty finding accurate information about the topic they are looking for, as content on Wikipedia usually contains only an overview of the topic referenced from some existing references. This study aims to examine Wikipedia, other encyclopedias and other online media that contain specific topics with their target users. The study was conducted on literature related to Wikipedia, encyclopedias, education and children's interests, especially at the elementary school level. Literature search is done by including some of the main keywords in Google Scholar such as "Wikipedia", "encyclopedia", "elementary school curriculum", "educational content" and "learning media". Literature is also obtained through the official website of the Ministry of Education and Culture which contains elementary and junior high school education standards, educational assessment standards, and literacy and numeration learning modules at elementary level. The results of literature analysis include 4 classifications based on topics, namely evaluation of usage, content, online learning and media. Based on the results of the analysis found that there has not been much research on the digital encyclopedia for education.

Abstract:
Though digital media have unquestionably affected the features and functions of modern encyclopedias, such works also continue to be shaped by factors thoroughly conventional by the end of the historical Enlightenment. As William Smellie, editor of the first Encyclopædia Britannica (1768-71) wrote, “utility ought to be the principal intention of every publication. Wherever this intention does not plainly appear, neither the books nor their authors have the smallest claim to the approbation of mankind.” The “instructional designers” and “user-experience specialists” of the online Britannica are the inheritors of all those authors and editors who before and after Smellie’s time devised different plans and methods intended to maximize the utility of their works. The definition of utility and with it the nature of encyclopedic knowledge continues to change both because of and despite technological difference; if digitization has in some ways advanced the ideals of Enlightenment encyclopedias, then it has in other ways allowed for the re-inscription of certain flaws and limitations that encyclopedias like the Britannica were specifically designed to overcome. By examining not only what one might read in the encyclopedia but also the ways in which one might read it, this article demonstrates the extent to which the notion of encyclopedic utility depends on historical context.

Koroleva, Svetlana B. "The "encyclopedic" Byron and his readers: Research methods and forms of arranging the material." Tekst. Kniga. Knigoizdanie, no. 37 (2025): 135–50. https://doi.org/10.17223/23062061/37/9.

Abstract:
The author proposes to evaluate the stylistic features of an encyclopedic article about a writer based on the results of a comparative analysis and the conditions of web communication. An analysis of various (available on the Internet) encyclopedic articles about Byron allows the author to make a general observation: as a rule, an encyclopedic article about a writer (including those intended for online encyclopedias) to one degree or another implements the stylistic features of the scientific and popular science genre. Of particular interest in this regard is the fact that in various articles of different times and from different language segments (Russian and English), research methodology is clearly expressed and, at the same time, accuracy, conciseness, and objectivity of presenting information are emotionally loaded due to some evaluativeness and figurative speech. Apparently, this is explained by the specifics of the material: the need to talk about the writer and his works. For the analysis, "open access" articles were selected, that is, those that can be found on a search platform and read by any Russian user (including students): (1) articles in Russian, mainly representing electronic versions of printed articles. They reflect the evolution of Russian literary criticism over the course of a century, from the 1920s to the 2010s; (2) 2 English-language articles of different publication times: the first was written in the second half of the 20th century for the English encyclopedia Britannica and published online in 1998 (edits are still being made to the way it is presented on the Internet). Its authorship belongs to Leslie Marchand, the compiler of the most authoritative English biography book about the life and work of Byron (1957). The second article is closer to the present moment and was compiled by Andrew M. Stauffer, an American researcher, professor at the University of Virginia, for the printed 3-volume Encyclopedia of Romantic Literature (2012). Based on the material of these articles, it was argued that encyclopedic (including online) articles about a writer show a tendency to combine strict academicism with such signs of the popular science genre as (restrained) emotionality and imagery. The logic of the selection of research methods for writing articles about Byron, traced in diachrony, showed that "academicity" in the case of an encyclopedic article about a writer is closely related to the choice of research methodology, while methods in literature studies are deeply rooted in the ideas of its time, and is therefore often ideological. In addition, the only (analysed) encyclopedic online article about Byron exhibits features characteristic of online publications: graphical arrangements of sections, visualization of information, interactivity in the presentation of material. The following general conclusion was made: in order to carry out successful and long-lasting communication in the modern web space, it is important for an encyclopedic online article about a writer to be focused on information visualization, graphic structure and interactivity, and also, distancing itself from ideology, to be based on the comparative method to a greater extent than on the biographical and cultural ones, while leaving aside the methods of vulgar biographism, sociology and postcolonialism. The author declares no conflicts of interests.

Abstract:
This study illustrates how different user groups perceive and evaluate the content quality of Wikipedia articles as compared to entries of a traditional encyclopedia. Therefore, an experimental set-up was used with blinded articles of different topic fields from the German Wikipedia and Brockhaus online, evaluated by experts with different backgrounds (university vs. practice) and by students of the field. The findings showed that the quality of both encyclopedias was assessed similarly (intra-group evaluations), although more faults and mistakes were criticized in the Wikipedia sample. However, the inter-group comparison revealed differences in the groups' quality perceptions. This partly applied to the comparison of the expert groups, and especially to the comparison of expert and (non-expert) student evaluations. Students tended to give better ratings, especially within the Wikipedia sample. Most noticeable, they did not detect any content-related faults in both sets, highlighting that further training is needed to improve their information literacy.

Abstract:
Background Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder (FGID) with heterogeneous clinical presentations. There are no clear testing parameters for its diagnosis, and the complex pathophysiology of IBS and the limited time that doctors have to spend with patients makes it difficult to adequately educate patients in the outpatient setting. An increased awareness of IBS means that patients are more likely to self-diagnose and self-manage IBS based on their own symptoms. These factors may make patients more likely to turn to Internet resources. Wikipedia is the most popular online encyclopedia among English-speaking users, with numerous validations. However, in Mandarin-speaking regions, the Baidu Encyclopedia is most commonly used. There have been no studies on the reliability, readability, and objectivity of IBS information on the two sites. This is an urgent issue as these platforms are accessed by approximately 1.45 billion people. Objective We compared the IBS content on Wikipedia (in English) and Baidu Baike (in Chinese), two online encyclopedias, in terms of reliability, readability, and objectivity. Methods The Baidu Encyclopedia (in Chinese) and Wikipedia (in English) were evaluated based on the Rome IV IBS definitions and diagnoses. All possible synonyms and derivatives for IBS and IBS-related FGIDs were screened and identified. Two gastroenterology experts evaluated the scores of articles for both sites using the DISCERN instrument, the Journal of the American Medical Association scoring system (JAMA), and the Global Quality Score (GQS). Results Wikipedia scored higher overall with DISCERN (p < .0001), JAMA (p < .0001) and GQS (p < .05) than the Baidu Encyclopedia. Specifically, Wikipedia scored higher in DISCERN Section 1 (p < .0001), DISCERN Section 2 (p < .01), DISCERN Section 3 (p < .001), and the General DISCERN score (p < .0001) than the Baidu Encyclopedia. Both sites had low DISCERN Section 2 scores (p = .18). Wikipedia also had a larger percentage of high quality scores in total DISCERN, DISCERN Section 1, and DISCERN Section 3 (p < .0001, P < .0001, P < .0004, respectively, based on the above 3 (60%) rule). Conclusions Wikipedia provides more reliable, higher quality, and more objective IBS-related health information than the Baidu Encyclopedia. However, there should be improvements in the information quality for both sites. Medical professionals and institutions should collaborate with these online platforms to offer better health information for IBS.

Abstract:
Statement of the problem. Teaching foreign languages at school and university is a complex and multifaceted process. Undoubtedly, the organization of the educational process is impossible without the use of textbooks, workbooks and books for reading. Dictionaries and encyclopedias become an additional means of learning a foreign language. The focus of this study is the problem of using special encyclopedias in the process of studying a foreign language at the university, particularly, English encyclopedias while learning English at the university. The relevance of the study is due to the high interest in foreign languages and the need to know them on a sufficient level to achieve some goals. Results. Modern encyclopedias in foreign languages, presented both in printed and online formats, allow users to obtain the necessary information on the topic under study, as well as to get acquainted with new terms of the subject area being studied. The analysis of "World History Encyclopedia" is presented in the article. Collecting and sharing knowledge are activities which are almost as important as creating knowledge. Yet, the ideas of collecting and sharing knowledge have changed over time, reflecting society’s needs. That’s why it’s necessary to study the evolution of the idea of collecting and sharing knowledge from the first libraries of the Near East during the Bronze Age, used by priests and rulers, through the new concept developed by Pliny the Elder, who wrote the earliest encyclopedic work that has survived to the present in the 1st century AD, and the first encyclopedias, covering a wide range of topics written in the Enlightenment era, all the way to the digital encyclopedias published on CD-ROMs and online encyclopedias like Wikipedia.

After more than 100 years of existence, Norway’s Great Norwegian Encyclopedia went through a major crisis between 2010 and 2014, as the transformation to the new, digital reality became commercially unviable to the publishing house that owned it. The country’s universities came together, formed The Great Norwegian Encyclopedia Association, and created a new editorial team, which has transformed the encyclopedia into an online success with high-quality articles assessed and updated by some of Norway’s leading scholars. The partnership with academia, a purpose-made publishing software, a decentralized production model, and confidence in the original brand have been keys to building this public service encyclopedia that other, likeminded institutions across Europe can learn from.
