Abstract:
Background: online gambling (bets, casino games, poker, etc.) is an activity that is spreading worldwide, even in countries where it is not yet legalized. Although the situation in Latin America is very heterogeneous, it is possible that, as online gambling is developed and promoted, addiction problems arise. This has already happened in Spain since the legalization of online gambling in 2011. Thus, psychology should be developing intervention programs to face this new scenario. Goal: this paper describes the treatment protocol for a young man with sports betting addiction. Method: the treatment proposal consisted in a cognitive behavioral therapy which focused on deconditioning of gambling situations; training of skills needed to prevent relapses and overcome risky situations; information on gambling risks; change of attitude towards gambling; and promotion of a healthy lifestyle incompatible with gambling addiction. Results: both the treatment phases and the theoretical basis of the intervention proposal are described. The patient, diagnosed with a severe gambling disorder, showed improvements in the gambling disorder criteria and the Symptom Severity Scale Score. Conclusions: a treatment protocol for online gambling addiction, which is based on the principles of motivation and learning, has been developed. This protocol has demonstrated to be effective in reducing gambling behavior and promoting a new healthy lifestyle.

Abstract:
This study aims to identify the motivational traits in online gambling in South Korea. To achieve this goal, 10 participants who had experienced problematic gambling in South Korea were selected, and the data were collected through 1 on 1 interview. The collected data were analyzed with deducted content analysis proposed by Elo and Kyngäs(2008). A categorization matrix was constructed based on the prior studies on the motivational traits in online gambling, and the matrix was utilized during the analysis. As result, 8 categories including 'accessibility,' 'convenience,' digitalization (unreality),' 'anonymity,' 'diversity,' 'attraction strategies,' 'management strategies,' and 'unrestrictedness' and 19 traits in online gambling in South Korea were discovered. Since there had been rare attempts to identify the motivational factors in online gambling in South Korea, this study demonstrated the new approach to separate online and offline gambling. Also, this study reflected the unique traits of Korea where most gambling behaviors are illegal. Finally, this study proposed several practical and political implications to regulate online gambling and recover from problematic online gambling.

Abstract:
<p>Various electronic devices equipped with internet networks have opened up opportunities for emerging crimes in cyberspace. Online gambling is a form of traditional crime transformation that turns into a crime operating in cyberspace. In the formulation of legal policies in various countries, not all countries declare online gambling as a criminal act. There are countries that legalize online gambling, there are countries that are in the gray area, and some are banning<br />online gambling. In this study there are two issues discussed, namely the application of jurisdiction in the criminal acts of online gambling and criminal law policies against online gambling. The application of jurisdiction in criminal acts of online gambling must pay attention to the rules of international law, where a country cannot enforce its rule of law in another country. Provisions regarding online gambling jurisdiction are regulated in Article 2 of Act Number 11 of 2008<br />concerning Electronic Information and Transactions. International cooperation in law enforcement on online gambling can be carried out as long as there are international agreements between countries and both countries alike establish online gambling as a crime. Criminal law policy on online gambling in Indonesia formulates online gambling as a criminal act as stipulated in Article 27 paragraph (2) of Act Number 11 of 2008 concerning Information and Electronic Transactions.</p>

Abstract:
The criminal act of gambling is a crime that is commonly committed by many people, because from gambling people can get multiple wealth from the results of gambling. In Indonesia, the practice of gambling has developed along with the development of technological advances, namely online gambling. This online gambling crime offers many advantages for owners and managers, because in practice the online gambling business scheme no longer requires complicated permits to establish a gambling business via the internet. Based on these conditions, this study wants to explain that Indonesia has legally regulated gambling in several laws and regulations, including those regulated in Article 303 and Article 303 bis of the Criminal Code. Then related to online gambling laws specifically regulated in Article 27 paragraph (2) of the Electronic Transaction Information Law and its amendments. The use of normative legal methods with a statutory approach (staapproach) is carried out carefully by examining and analyzing legal rules relating to the accountability of online gambling crimes in Indonesia. The responsibility of online gambling actors is proven by containing elements of a criminal act. The criminal responsibility of online gambling actors is not only borne by players, but also includes those who give someone the opportunity to play gambling, such as service providers and managers of online gambling platforms.

Abstract:
This article discusses youth consumption of high-speed Internet technology and online youth gambling based on examination of an Australian youth and young adults sample ranging in age from 13 to 30 years of age. This article explores the impact of online gambling on youth well-being and presents organization of the issues confronting youth and gambling behavior online. The article covers current research related to youth and offers a set of narrative definitions of online gambling as offered by 175 youth and young adults. Coupled with this, is a set of industry comments from Australian gambling sector representatives related to this cohort; these offer clarity on how this cohort interacts with current online gambling service providers. There is no doubt that youth underestimate the possible dangers of online gambling and define gambling and online gambling in terms of fun and gaming rather that fully appreciating the risks related to gambling. It is evident there is some legislation and practice protocols ranging in effectiveness that assist in minimizing the access of youth to online gambling.

Abstract:
In most jurisdictions gambling is considered a demerit good that causes negative externalities and requires market interventions. Such interventions are based on (1) consumer protection and public health, (2) crime prevention and public order, and (3) fiscal motives. Despite a relative homogeneity among Western cultures in normative values, a broad variety of regulatory systems for online gambling can be observed, ranging from free markets to licensing systems, state monopolies and prohibitions—even within the same nation state. It is hypothesized that these differences stem from insufficient knowledge of the idiosyncrasies of online gambling rather than from different regulatory goals. A comparative study is thus needed to explore the socioeconomic effects of different regulatory regimes and to educate regulators.

Abstract:
Many jurisdictions have legalized and licensed online gambling sites. Nonetheless, a notable proportion of the online gambling market operates offshore. Offshore sites pose risks for consumers in terms of unsafe and disreputable practices, compete with domestically licensed sites and do not participate in the economies in which they operate. This study aimed to explore the extent to which Australian online gamblers use offshore as compared to domestic gambling sites, consumer attitudes and gambling-related harms. Participants ( N = 3199) completed an online survey assessing gambling behaviour, reasons for choosing sites, awareness of and impact of online gambling legislation, and problem gambling. Results show that 25.8% of online gamblers used offshore sites, and that these were more involved gamblers overall than domestic gamblers, and had greater problem gambling severity. Most online gamblers preferred domestic sites, indicating that regulation of online gambling with associated consumer protection measures may benefit those who wish to gamble online.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to quantify beta for an online gambling portfolio in the UK and investigates whether it is time-varying. It also examines the dynamic correlations of the online gambling portfolio with both the market and socially responsible portfolios. In addition, this paper documents the effect of important UK gambling legislation on the betas and correlations of the online gambling portfolio. Design/methodology/approach This study uses static and time-varying models (e.g. rolling regressions, multivariate GARCH models) to estimate betas and correlations for a portfolio of UK online gambling stocks. Findings This study finds that beta for the online gambling portfolio is less than 1, indicative of defensiveness toward the market, a result that is consistent with prior literature for sin stocks. In addition, the conditional correlation between the market and online gambling portfolio is small when compared to the correlation of the market and socially responsible portfolios. Findings suggest that the adoption of the Gambling Act 2005 increases the conditional correlation between the market and online gambling portfolio and it also increases the conditional betas for the online gambling portfolio. Research limitations/implications This paper serves as a starting point for future research on online gambling stocks. Going forward, studies can focus on the financial performance or accounting performance of online gambling stocks. Originality/value This empirical investigation provides insight into the risk characteristics of publicly listed online gambling companies in the UK.

Abstract:
Gambling disorder is known to have a negatively detrimental impact on affected individual's physical and psychological health, social relationships, and finances. Via remote technologies (e.g., Internet, mobile phones, and interactive television), gambling has come out of gambling venues and has brought the potential for online gambling to occur anywhere (e.g., the home, the workplace, and on the move). Alongside the rise of online gambling, online gambling advertising have spread throughout all type of media. In a sample of 201 Spanish university students, the present study explored the perceived influence of online gambling advertising. More specifically it examined the Third-Person Effect (TPE), and its consequences on individuals' willingness to support censorship or public service advertising. The findings demonstrate that despite the difference on the perception of the effects of online gambling advertising, it scarcely accounts for the behavioural outcomes analysed. On the contrary, awareness of problem gambling and, above all, paternalistic attitudes appear to explain this support.

In 2020, 14,726 gambling content was found to target rural communities including children, teenagers, and adults. The purpose of the study was to analyze the impact and the control of people over Ding Dong Live gambling using Hirschi theory. The research took place in Tanjung Sawah Kampar Utara Village using qualitative research through observation, interview and documentation being the techniques of collecting data. The results showed the impact of Live Ding Dong's online gambling activities, namely domestic disputes, disputes between citizens, theft, and the anxiety of parents who worry about their children doing similar gambling. The controls can be reprimanding landowners and stalls that provide gambling venues and bookies, putting up gambling hazard banners, and employing religious lectures to give advice. Control is ineffective primarily on the application of functions and the role of families and formal elements in the study area. The most fundamental cause of weak social control is that there is still a kinship relationship between players or gamblers and local community so that when there is family reporting, it will bear shame and social sanctions. Therefore, awareness, enforcement, and coaching from local influential figures, especially public figures and formal figures are required to provide legal awareness of the Live Ding Dong online gambling issue.

Abstract:
The spread of Internet gambling has raised several issues concerning motivations to gamble, consumer behaviour online, problem gambling, security of Web sites, and fairness and integrity of the games. Rather surprisingly, however, there has been little in the way of research regarding online crime and Internet gambling even though it is an urgent priority. This article addresses this absence by investigating the types, techniques, and organizational dynamics of online crime at the portals of Internet gambling sites. Our approach is qualitative in nature and explores, using document analysis, the activities of cybernomads, dot.con teams, and criminal networks. We demonstrate that there are different levels of criminal organization, distinguished by their complexity of division of labour; coordination of roles; purposefulness of association between criminals; and ability to avoid, evade, or neutralize security systems and law enforcement. We conclude by arguing that conventional understandings of real-world gambling-related criminal relationships have been altered by the digital environment of the Internet.

Abstract:
Online gambling has witnessed exponential growth globally, facilitated by the proliferation of internet access and digital platforms. This phenomenon has sparked significant concerns regarding its potential impact on mental health, particularly in regions like New Zealand where gambling is popular. This paper endeavors to investigate the relationship between online gambling and mental health outcomes within the unique socio-cultural context of New Zealand, comparing these impacts with those of traditional forms of gambling. The introduction of online gambling has revolutionized the accessibility and convenience of participating in gambling activities. In New Zealand, as in many other jurisdictions, this shift has prompted regulatory responses aimed at managing potential risks while balancing consumer demand and industry growth. Despite these efforts, the pervasive nature of online gambling introduces distinct challenges that may exacerbate issues related to mental health. The study will begin by reviewing existing literature on global trends in online gambling and its documented effects on mental health. This will include an analysis of regulatory frameworks implemented in various countries to address these concerns, highlighting successes and challenges in consumer protection and harm minimization strategies. Psychological theories and models explaining addictive behaviors associated with online gambling will be explored to provide a theoretical foundation for understanding the observed impacts. A key focus of this research will be a comparative analysis between online gambling and traditional forms of gambling prevalent in New Zealand, such as land-based casinos and sports betting. By contrasting these modalities, the study aims to elucidate whether online gambling uniquely intensifies mental health risks or presents analogous challenges to traditional gambling activities. Methodologically, the study will employ a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative analysis will draw upon national gambling prevalence surveys and data from online gambling platforms to assess the prevalence of online gambling in New Zealand and profile its participants. Qualitative research will involve in-depth interviews with online gamblers and mental health professionals to capture nuanced insights into the psychological and emotional impacts experienced. Findings from the study are expected to contribute empirical evidence on the prevalence of online gambling in New Zealand, alongside comparative assessments of mental health outcomes between online and traditional gamblers. Specific risk factors associated with online gambling addiction and deterioration in mental health will be identified, shedding light on mechanisms through which these impacts manifest. The implications of these findings for policy and regulation will be discussed, emphasizing the need for adaptive strategies that safeguard mental well-being without stifling technological innovation or economic contributions from the gambling sector. Recommendations will be made for enhancing existing regulatory frameworks to ensure they adequately address the unique challenges posed by online gambling while promoting responsible gambling practices. This research seeks to advance understanding of the complex interplay between online gambling and mental health in New Zealand. By elucidating comparative impacts and exploring regulatory responses, the study aims to inform evidence-based interventions that support public health objectives while fostering a sustainable gambling environment.

Abstract:
The proposed study is devoted to the theoretical analysis of the development of online gambling in the gaming business system. In order to better understanding the concept of online gambling, we suggest that it is not monolithic, but is consisting of segments: casinos (commercial and tribal), state lotteries, betting on pairs, sports betting, charitable gambling, gambling on the Internet, standalone electronic gaming devices (such as video poker and video keno), and so on. Each group has its own distinct set of concerns, communities of interest, and balances of assets and liabilities. As it was noted in a report by the National Commission on the Impact of Gambling, technology in this area is developing at a rapid pace, and its potential is only beginning to be seen. The state of development of online gambling is analyzed in countries where it is legalized. And such countries that have legalized online games can be tentatively classified into three groups: 1) countries that offer operators inexpensive licensing with low tax rates and little or no control by regulators; 2) countries from the European jurisdiction, which also regulate online games for economic development, but have more rules compared to the first group; 3) developed countries with complex regulatory policies. Countries falling into the third group face the challenge of having their markets taken over by websites originating from the jurisdictions of the first two groups. Liberalization of slot machines and online gambling has a positive effect on, this growth index will be greater in those countries where gambling is oriented to local consumers. COVID-19 led to lower market revenues in the gambling sector in Europe in 2020 and 2021 compared to previous years and accelerated the previously existing trend of increasing the percentage of online gaming. Although there are significant differences in the share of online gambling in different national gambling markets, it is worth noting that with the increase in the share of online gambling, the amount of income to the budgets of countries also increases.

Abstract:
Background and aims: In recent years online gambling has become a potential risk for young people. The purpose of this study was to analyse patterns of gambling activities and their association with behavioural risk factors and protective factors. Data and Method: A demographically balanced sample of Finnish respondents aged 15–25 years ( N = 1200) filled out an online survey in March–April 2017. Principal component analysis was used to reduce the variables on gambling activities to smaller sets of components, and regression analysis was used to analyse whether behavioural risk factors and protective factors were associated with the gambling patterns found. Results: Two main components were found: online- and skill-based competent gambling and chance-based entertainment gambling. Competent gambling had statistically significant associations with a variety of behavioural problems and risks, including psychological distress, lower social support, lower delay of gratification, hazardous drinking, regular drug use, compulsive Internet use, and problem gambling. Entertainment gambling was associated with lower delay gratification, hazardous drinking, and problem gambling. Entertainment gambling had a negative association with compulsive Internet use and a positive association with social support. Conclusions: Online-based competent gambling is a potentially hazardous form of gambling. New forms of online gambling are potential risks for younger generations. Health professionals working with young people should be aware of the role of online gambling and associated activities.

Abstract:
Recreational gambling has become an accepted pursuit, and the advent of the Internet has rendered online gambling ubiquitous. However, the resultant rapid growth in online recreational gambling is not matched by an understanding of the drivers of customers’ intentions to gamble online. While this is potentially a fascinating aspect of consumer behavior, marketing scholars have shied away from giving online gambling much attention. This research seeks a better understanding of the drivers of recreational online gambling intentions among customers by applying the latest version of the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Technology—UTAUT 2, to customers in an online gambling context. It also proposes additional hypotheses that account for the role of anticipated enjoyment and perceived fairness. Data are collected from 593 casino customers of an online gambling firm and analyzed using PLS-SEM via Smart PLS. Results show that perceived fairness and anticipated enjoyment are significant drivers of online gambling intention, with perceived fairness being fully mediated by effort expectancy, anticipated enjoyment, and social influence. Shorn of drivers and moderators that are not significant, an online gambling intention model is proposed. Theoretical and managerial implications are discussed, limitations are noted, and areas for further research are suggested.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to examine Millennials and generational differences in online gambling activity by comparing online gambling behavior across four different generations: Silent Generation, Baby Boomers, Gen Xers and Millennials. Design/methodology/approach The sample comprised tracked gambling data at the individual player level provided by an online casino accepting real money wagers in a major US gambling market. Attributes of gambling behavior were examined and compared across different generations using Kruskal–Wallis test and pairwise comparisons. Findings Generational differences were observed in 13 of the 16 behavioral variables. Millennials spent the least amount of time on gambling and exhibited the lowest scores on the number of days for slot gambling, trip length and trip frequency among all generations. However, their average table gaming volume per play day was greater than those of other generations. Practical implications The results of this study provide a better understanding of the generational differences in online gambling behavior. They also help casino operators and gaming machine manufacturers develop casino games and products that can appeal to different generational groups in the online gambling market. Originality/value Despite the on-going industry discussion about Millennials and their potential influence on the online gambling market, there appears to be a paucity of empirical research on the online gambling behavior of the Millennial generation. This study fills that gap in empirical evidence, addressing generational differences in online gambling.

Abstract:
Problem gambling among young people is an emerging trend globally. The online environment in particular offers various possibilities for gambling engagement. This is the first cross-national survey study using the social ecological model to analyze problem gambling, especially in the online context. The study aimed to analyze how different social ecological spheres explain problem gambling. Participants were young people aged 15–25 in the United States (n = 1212), South Korea (n = 1192), Spain (n = 1212), and Finland (n = 1200). The South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) instrument measured problem gambling. The regression models analyzed problem gambling with measures of intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational, and societal spheres. Spanish participants had the highest SOGS score for problem gambling. In all countries, the variations in problem gambling were best explained by the organizational sphere measures (26%) when compared to the intrapersonal (11%), interpersonal (5%), and societal (3%) spheres. In the full model, the organizational sphere measures had strong associations with problem gambling. These included consumer debt, online gambling community participation, online casino participation, and exposure to online pop-up advertisements. Problem gambling was also associated with conformity to group norms in the interpersonal sphere, and male gender and impulsivity in the intrapersonal sphere. Cross-national results were similar in different countries. Within the final model, gambling community participation had the strongest association with problem gambling (β = 0.23, p < 0.001). The online context plays a major role in problem gambling behavior. The social ecological model is a useful tool for tackling problem gambling and developing preventative measures.

Abstract:
The gambling phenomenon has been happening for a long time. Development of science and technology causes new ways to commit crimes. One of the crimes that occur is online gambling. This can happen due to facilities and media that make it easier for people to access sites and applications that have elements of gambling. To eradicate this action, a provision that strictly prohibits the act with consequences for the violators is needed. The online gambling act not only violates Indonesia's laws, but it also violates the values and norms embraced by the community. Although it has been prohibited by Indonesian law, online gambling cases are still widely found in the community. To find out why, the sociology of law is needed to find out the relationship between law and society. Viewed from the sociology of law’s point of view, especially the effectiveness of the law according to Soerjono Soekanto, the law on conventional and online gambling are still not fully effective. This is because there are still inconsistencies between applicable laws and social values, lack of legal certainty, lack of supporting facilities for law enforcement, lack of awareness and knowledge of the law, and lack of community participation in law enforcement actions. The research method is non-doctrinal or empirical legal research method which is carried out with statute approach and sociological approach. This research aims to determine the sociology of law’s perspective on online gambling that occurs in society.

Having children, playing online scratch cards, and online sport betting—but not online lotteries—turned out to be typical for problem online gamblers. The prevalence of problem gambling among Polish e-gamblers suggests that extended research in this area is needed.

Abstract:
There are online gambling cases where the Public Prosecutor tends to charge with alternative charges using Article 303 of the Criminal Code while the court facts and evidence explain clearly about online gambling. It is interesting to study the implementation of charges by the Public Prosecutor against perpetrators of online gambling crimes in Padang City and the reasons why the Public Prosecutor charges online gambling cases with Article 303 of the Criminal Code, whereas Article 27 paragraph 2 of the ITE Law also specifically regulates online gambling. This paper uses empirical juridical research methods, where the data used is primary data and secondary data through literature study. The application of charges in online gambling cases by the Public Prosecutor needs to pay attention to several things, the most important of which is to complete the elements relating to Article 27 paragraph 2 of Law No. 19 of 2016 concerning Amendments to Law No. 11 of 2008 concerning ITE. In many online gambling cases that go to the Padang District Prosecutor's Office, there are deficiencies in evidence to complete the elements in the ITE so that the gambling articles in the Criminal Code are used
