Abstract:
The spread of news is accelerating. Today, the time for publishing a piece of news until it reaches the reader is minimal. The online journalists are in the middle of the news flow. They are amongst the first persons who receive the incoming news to the editorial staff. It does not take longer than 10 minutes from receiving the incoming news to the editorial staff before it has been published on the web. During these 10 minutes online journalists manage both to check the source, contact possible witnesses, write the news and finally publish it. There is a lot of work that has to be compiled in a short time. The time gap between the incoming of news to the editorial staff until it is published is almost minimal. An increased speed of the publishing of news has arisen within online journalism and this has an influence on the journalists, their working methods and the contents which is published in the web-edition of the papers. This paper had the intention to investigate what influence the speed has on the local online journalism and also what consequence this speed has on the local journalists and the news which is transmitted from the editorial staff to the readers. In order to obtain this intention two questions were formulated. The purpose with these two questions was to investigate the impact of the speed on the journalistic ideals and what influence this phenomenon has on the online journalists´ collection, processing and distribution of information. In Sweden there are few studies available regarding the influence of the speed on local online journalism. Most of the existing research within the area online journalism and speed focus instead on large, foreign and nationwide media companies. These companies concentrate on a large target group in contrast to the local newspapers which reach a smaller group of readers living in a specific geographical area. There exists therefore a small unexplored area in the scientific research. The aim with this paper was to contribute new information to the area online journalism. In order to be able to achieve this intention, the paper was based on two qualitative partial studies namely conversation interviews, in order to achieve a deeper knowledge of the local online journalists´ opinions and valuations regarding the speed and a participant observation to elucidate if they translate words into deeds. The observations took place at the editorial staff of NWT (Nya Wermlands-Tidningen), which is the largest local paper in Värmland. The results from the qualitative partial studies showed that the speed does not have a negative influence on the online journalists´ collection and processing of information. The reason for this is that the journalistic ideals are strong amongst the employees and they have also regular routines, which allow them to perform a good work. One further important factor why the speed does not have the same penetrating power in these two partial studies can to a large extent be due to the local context where the studies have been performed. The absence of deadlines has resulted in the fact that no major lack of time can be perceived in local journalism. The employees can to a great extent decide the speed. The speed has a negative impact within online journalism when it comes to distribution of information. The speed has here a larger penetrating power compared with the two other partial studies collection and processing of information. The main reason for why journalists strive after speed regarding distribution of information is the desire to be first with a piece of news. An important conclusion which was obtained in this study was that journalists on a local level strive after a quick publishing speed in form of a continuous updating, not necessarily for the reader s´ sake but because of the will to beat their competitors.

Abstract:
News media and journalism have undergone huge changes over the first two decades of the 21st century due to the online boom and social media. Infor- mation is delivered to the readers instantaneously making journalists adapt to a new online reality. In this thesis we are focusing on the technological ad- vancement of field and how the journalists manage to cope with this change. A qualitative analysis is carried out in order to understand the current land- scape and to analyze and discuss the challenges and opportunities journalists are facing, as well as explore possible ways one can improve the quality re- garding fact-checking and overall effectivity. The findings show that there is room for innovation and improvement in the news industry that could con- tribute to the quality of the news, together with supporting journalists and news organizations into having a better reach in an online ecosystem.

Abstract:
Fashion journalism can be understood as a complex, inter-dependent set of professional practices that have arisen in a variety of media at the intersection of fashion and journalism. This thesis, Fashion Meets Journalism: Mapping and Evaluating Australian Fashion Journalism, answers the question, 'What is Australian fashion journalism?' in three stages: First, it maps the extent of fashion journalism across media in Australia to locate the field and focus on the sites of fashion journalism; second, it foregrounds practices of the journalism branch, evaluating how and why the field is pitted against other types of journalism when they share an inter-dependent set of professional practices. The opinions of leading industry producers are also sought regarding the matter. Then, considering the current position of fashion journalism, implications for fashion media and journalism are explored in order to improve the visibility of fashion journalism and solidify it as a professional practice.

Florin, Constantin Serban. "I am a reporter and you are not: how legacy and digital-only journalists in Hong Kong negotiate their professional boundaries." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2017. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/398.

Abstract:
The journalistic field is currently disrupted by digital networked technologies and by the rise of public participation. In the case of Hong Kong, the journalists' situation is complicated by the political uncertainties of the territory and the high economic pressures local journalists are facing. This research aims to understand how the legacy press and digital-only media in Hong Kong are patrolling and strengthening their professional borders in order to continue doing their work in this new environment. The journalistic field is analysed in relationship with four main themes: 1) technological convergence and actants, 2) public participation, 3) political pressures, and 4) economic imperatives. Anchored in Pierre Bourdieu's field theory and borrowing from Thomas Gieryn's concept of boundary-work, this comparative study highlights the historical developments that have led to the current configurations of the journalistic field. This empirical research is carried out while fully taking into account social and cultural characteristics of the territory, but especially of the journalistic field in Hong Kong. Apart from such an investigative effort, this research analyses where new actors (e.g. the audience through its participation) and recent technological developments are located within the broader journalistic field. Through a case-study method, relying on in-depth interviews, newsroom observations, and annual reports, this study points out to what extent legacy journalists and digital-only journalists adopt similar or different tactics to enforce their professional boundaries and how they adapt to a new environment brought forward by technological convergence, public participation, growing political and economic pressures. On the theoretical level, this research contributes with an inclusive re-conceptualization of the journalistic field and the concept of boundary-work.

Abstract:
The study seeks to find a baseline of Twitter usage of traditional media. Findings suggest that traditional media are using Twitter (a non-traditional medium) in a traditional way. The study explores why a tool like Twitter needs to be approached by journalists in ways to which they may not be accustomed. The study additionally finds that newsrooms are underutilizing Twitter's potential for audience interactivity and have not established guidelines for journalists in the use of Twitter for work purposes. Conclusions include the need for more understanding of Twitter on the part of managers, a usage of Twitter that fits the medium, rather than traditional journalism models and more study in the future so that the journalism business can stay ahead of the curve when new communication technologies are introduced.

Brooks, Gillian. "The subfield of online journalism : a study of the legitimizing practices of online news organizations." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2016. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/263012.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditional news organizations exist within an apparatus of accountability, held together by their reputation and the professionalization of the occupation of journalism. Legitimacy in journalism has solidified over time; but with the emergence of online media, traditional journalistic standards have been challenged as online news organizations attempt to establish a new standard. This study explores the changing nature of journalism as a space of contested power relations and networked communities, focusing specifically on how online news organizations, born digitally, become legitimate. Based on close to 200 hours of interviews conducted over a period of six months at prominent online news organizations in the United States, this dissertation seeks to identify the manner in which online news organizations, specifically Breitbart.com, The Drudge Report, and The Huffington Post, gain legitimacy in the subfield of online journalism. There exists a unique structured space internal to the subfield of online journalism – a subfield of practices and power relations – with online organizations accumulating varying degrees of social capital in order to legitimize their role within this evolving ecology. In relying on Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of the field, Mark Suchman’s work on organizational legitimacy, and Anand Narasimhan and Mary Watson’s work on field formation, this study outlines the conditions under which certain online news organizations can participate and gain legitimacy in this emerging subfield. I argue that three characteristics determine whether an online news organization can be considered legitimate; in analyzing these characteristics, I demonstrate how they help to create legitimacy in specific cases. If media scholars are to understand how online news organizations have emerged in recent years and become a key source for information, an interrogation of this unique space, in all of its complexities, is essential.

Domingo, Santamaria David. "Inventing online journalism. Development of the Internet as a news medium in four Catalan online newsrooms." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/4190.

Full text
Abstract:
Online journalism has developed in several directions and rhythms, taking different shapes in different online news projects. Scholars have offered empirical evident that these directions are, in many occasions, far from the utopias envisioned in the 90s. We are still inventing online journalism. A comparative research focused on four case studies of Catalan online newsrooms traces the material and organizational constrains in the definition and use of hypertext, multimedia and interactivity -those hyped Internet features- by online journalists.
Professional routines and values of the four online newsrooms are analyzed, with the aim of finding the similarities and divergences among different media traditions: a national newspaper (El Periódico), a public broadcasting corporation (CCRTV), a local newspaper (Diari de Tarragona) and a public-funded news portal (laMalla.net). Observation of the journalists at work and in-depth interviews provide a close look at the context and development of each case, interpreted with a constructivist approach to the social adoption of new technologies.
Some of the findings of the study include: immediacy is the main value in three of the online newsrooms; the rest of the online journalism utopias are shaped by this decision; news wires are the main -and almost only- source for most of online news; small sized staffs and the culture of immediacy discourage online journalists from going out or contacting first-hand sources, specially in traditional media online newsrooms; online journalists in traditional media environments tend to downgrade the value of their work in regard to their offline mates; the online-only project overcomes some of the problems with a specialization strategy, having each journalist focused on particular topics, and they are more sensitive to explore utopias.
The author argues that more comparative studies at an international level on the organizational and material structure of online newsrooms are needed to offer media companies a realistic stand point to continue the invention of the internet as a news medium.

Abstract:
The enhanced discursive opportunity structures that the Internet enables has inspired a momentous revolution in the Nigerian media landscape. This dissertation chronicles the emergence and flowering of the citizen and alternative online journalism of the Nigerian diasporic public sphere located primarily in the United States. Using case-study research, it profiles the major diasporan online citizen media outlets and highlights instances where these geographically distant citizen media sites shaped and influenced both the national politics and policies of the homeland and the media practices of the domestic media formation. The study makes the case that while it is customary in the scholarship on sovereignty, state-civil society relations, and diaspora studies to emphasize domination and one-dimensionality in cultural flows, the participation of members of the Nigerian digital diaspora in the politics and discourses of their homeland, from their exilic locations in the West through the instrumentality of online citizen media, illustrates that citizens, especially in the age of the Internet, are not mere powerless subjects and receivers of informational flows from the institutions of the state and corporate mass media but can be active consumers and producers of informational resources and even purveyors of political power in ways that amply exemplify trans-local reciprocality. It also argues that the Nigerian diaspora media might very well be a prototype of an evolving, Internet-enabled, trans-local, and mutual informational and cultural exchange between the educated deterritorialized ethnoscapes of peripheral nations whose exile in the West endues them with symbolic and cultural capital and the private institutions and governments of their homelands. The study recommends a comparative study of the online citizen journalism of Third World virtual diasporas in the West.

Abstract:
Internet and new communication technologies have drastically changed the way we send and receive messages, changing also the professions engaged in the gathering and diffusion of information. The Internet is by many presumed to have had a democratising effect on journalism, as it can be used to spread counter-hegemonic information and dismantle false objectivity (Castells, 2009, Rodriguez 2012). In this thesis, I examine this assumption by targeting one example of alternative journalism practice online. Through a case study of Paraguayan independent news site E’a, the thesis investigates how digital media affects newsroom structures and organisation as well as the role and objectives of the journalists. Previous theories and research on old and new alternative media, offered by scholars such as Susan Forde, Chris Atton, Leah A. Lievrouw, Olga Guedes Bailey, Bart Cammaerts and Nico Carpentier, are set against the voices of the practitioners producing E’a in this qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews. The thesis comes to the conclusion, that the Internet brings both benefits and drawbacks in the case of E’a. As a cheap way of publishing news, the digital platform serves as a lifebuoy for a project with a very limited commercial base. But the low Internet access in the country (and therefore presumed low impact of the project) and the change in organizational structure (web journalism resulting in a less collaborative form of working) leave the majority of the practitioners with network pessimism and a growing desire offline. Potential future research could look closer at alternative newscontent online, how it is perceived by the readers, as well as group dynamics and gendered participation in the digital era.

The fundamental enquiry is whether the work of online journalism associated with the middle class is contributory to democratic change and instrumental for national integration.;This study explains that 400 years of colonialism within Malaysia's history has been responsible for the formation of a plural society within which the Malays are the indigenous who make up the largest community. British colonists were responsible for the influx of Chinese and Indian communities. Since then issues of Malay supremacy, and closer interethnic-relations, or principally national integration, have become key concerns. This has resulted in the government having to place social order and national security as high priorities, which became the basis for various stringent laws affecting freedom of the press and of speech.;The emergence of online journalism has marked some trends of democratic change and national integration. The government assurance of non-censorship of the Internet, espoused in the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998 supports such trends, particularly through online journalism. However, the majority of Malaysian opinion formers are contented with the democratic practices in Malaysia even amidst intense criticism of its substandard label as compared to Western liberal democracy.;This study views online journalism as a new public sphere where social and political discourse, criticism, debate and discussion, have become common trends. However, the new public sphere is also responsible for social tension. The government is positively responding to some of the criticisms and dissenting pieces highlighted through the new public sphere but not to a scale that could be considered as rampant democratic change.

Anthropology
Ph.D.
Through research grounded in participant observation among online journalists in Jordan, this project contributes to the investigation of longstanding problems in social theory by asking how the relationship between mass communication and politics is changing in the post-internet age. Or perhaps more skeptically, it asks: Is this relationship changing, or do we merely assume that it must be? Focusing on the concept of censorship, where media and politics meet most forcefully, I investigate the intersections of new technologies, journalistic practices, and state control. My dissertation examines how journalists in Jordan negotiate state censorship and understand their own processes of self-censorship as they mediate modernity and political change in a country where political truths are to a great degree contrived and manipulated. My research explores the effects of censorship on digital news transmission – and the effects of digital transmission on censorship – as journalists create knowledge in an evolving media environment. Particularly in the wake of the so-called Arab Spring, new technologies have enabled a cadre of Jordanian journalists and media activists willing to test boundaries, and permitted an explosive media pluralism in the kingdom. In response to this more distributed, smaller-scale media production, the Jordanian state seems to be changing its tactics. Where it earlier relied on newspaper editors to act as gatekeepers, it now relies on cultivating self-censorship in the individual. My research shows that as media production and consumption become more distributed, so must state censorship. No longer centrally negotiated between government and media institutions, it is communicated to journalists through diffuse control, prosecutions of their peers, changing regulatory schema, and professional codes that promote "responsibility" and "balance" on the part of the individual. Nevertheless, there are still avenues of resistance available to journalists at both independent online news outlets and larger state-aligned outlets. I argue that the Jordanian regime disciplines its media to act as a form of window-dressing, in which it performs certain democratic ideals while ceding no power to its citizens and institutions of civil society. Through this strategy, aimed in part toward its own people but primarily at its all-important foreign investors and donors, the state adds a veneer of freedom to its autocratic foundation.

Abstract:
The focus of the study is an analysis, to what extend nationalist positionings are used in the online mediation of sports. The empirical study focuses on how nationality is represented and constructed in textual output. In addition, the study compares the findings of a content analysis conducted in Germany and the UK. As critical case the coverage of the 2012 UEFA EURO Championship qualification in 2011 has been selected.Previous research shows that nationalism in mediated sports within the traditional media is represented through various approaches. The usage of national identities and the construction of difference have been observed by researchers, such as Dixon (2000), Bruce (2004), Malcom (2009), Stocker (2009), Chesterton (2011) and others as mechanisms of nationalism. Furthermore, the developments and trends in the genre of sports journalism have been studied by researchers, such as Schlegel (2007) and Schmalenbach (2009), in regards to the journalistic profession, economical interests and tendencies in writing. The most important theory for this research has been the construction of difference in media output as well as how national identities or nationalism is represented in textual output. Most influential for this study are the theories by Stuart Hall (1997) and Teun van Dijk (1991). A definition regarding nationality and nationalism is based on the Danish researcher Jorgensen as presented by Östman (2009).The empirical study collects articles published on the two most visited websites / portals from Germany and the UK. 81 articles have been studied through a quantitative content analysis. From the empirical study it has been concluded that in both countries nationalist positionings are represented through constructions of difference. However, it needs to be noted that journalists in Germany and the UK are using different approaches. In Germany, country names and variations are used to create distance between the home and the other teams. In the UK they are used to strengthen their own national identity. Sources and quotations of the home teams are overrepresented to underline the connection between them and the audience. Pronouns and comparatives / superlatives are used to construct an “us-versus-them” relationship. Pronouns are more important in the UK for this approach, while in Germany it is mostly comparatives / superlatives. The frequencies of the different constructions vary, but all of them are used regularly in online sports reporting and confirm that there are nationalist tendencies in sports journalism.

Abstract:
This thesis empirically investigates alarm and prosocial words in online news headlines and the associated reads (the number of clicks), responses (including the number of likes, dislikes, and comments), and relays (the number of shares). I analyze over 170,000 online news headlines and mainly the associated number of reads and likes for each news story on an online news platform. Theoretically, based on the meta-level evolutionary theory-evolution by natural selection-I propose a middle-level evolutionary model of prosocial media effects from a nature-nurture interactive perspective. Then, I propose a specific evolutionary model that was derived from the proposed middle-level model, the human alarm system for sensational news, a psychological mechanism designed to detect and concern threatening news. I generate research questions from the specific model to test whether news headlines with alarm words attract more likes as a survival concern indirectly through an increased number of reads as a selection device, and whether prosocial words in headlines serve as a moderator. The results of a conditional indirect effect model showed that given that online readers click on (i.e, read) news headlines with alarm words, the fact that it has a prosocial word in the headlines leads readers more likely to "like" it. The empirical findings' theoretical and methodological contributions, research agenda, and examples of implications for future studies are discussed.

Abstract:

This case study gives a detailed description of the tools employed in the management of a news-producing virtual team. The research uses field observation and interviews to identify patterns of internal communication in an attempt to better understand the influence and uses of technology on organizational dynamics in general and media management in particular. The findings from this case study reinforce research suggesting that communication patterns and organizational structure, more than specific tools, play an important role in virtual team management. It also emphasizes the role of leadership as an important factor in tool choice and effectiveness. As organizations increasingly rely on virtual teams, managers are ever more tasked with effective supervision and can benefit from these findings.

Abstract:

Newspapers rely on content-based documentary photography to visually communicate current news events. As circulations declined in the mid-1980s, media owners persuaded editors into mixing traditional hard news on their front pages with reader-friendly soft news features. Content-based visual journalism was challenged by the encroachment of visual fluff, altering the character projected to readers.

Today, newspapers struggle to evolve into online “news organizations” and visual journalism competes with entertainment, advertising, and marketing to attract viewers. The central question for the future is, will the marketing pressure continue to dilute visual journalism and overload viewers with visual distractions? And, how will design and organization influence the viewers’ perception of credibility?

Through a series of elicitation interviews, this research examined how the visual choices that online newspapers make — their “visual character” — influence audience perceptions of news credibility. The responses showed that readers’ perceptions of credibility are influenced by the visual content on a newspaper Web site. The study participants gauged credibility based on factors like photography use, competing advertising, and design organization. The study also found that linking visual branding to the newspaper print version could add to credibility.

The media have a great responsibility for providing information. All information provided by any media should be in an easily accessible form, the information should be filled with content worthy of the current attention of the day. This means that a journalist should summarize, synthesize and analyze information, and not just receive it from government officials, pass it word for word on the front pages of newspapers or “throw it out” on the air.

In recent years, the news industry has undergone radical and irreversible changes. The reason for these metamorphoses was the expansion of social media, which forever changed the journalistic norms of the XXI century. The level of interest in social platforms and their efficiency has increased, mainly due to the Internet, which helps people around the world to stay connected.

Abstract:
Collaborative journalism emerged in Brazil during 2000\'s first decade. It implies considering every citizen a potential reporter, capable of participate in the news process. In order to evaluate if the practice was adopted in major Brazilian Internet portal\'s - top Web traffic drivers - with the same depth and extent as adopted by international initiatives like OhMyNews, Digg or Slashdot, a series of content analysis were processed in their collaborative content, alongside with interviews with top online journalists and publishers. The collected data revealed the Brazilian Internet user still concentrates in register reality as a mere blatant, considered one of the earlier steps of online collaboration. Fact checking, source research and editing material are still goals to achieve.

This research approaches the topic of online media participation from the point of view of the citizens and taking as a main object of research the participatory options included in news media websites (participatory journalism). The qualitative part of the thesis is based on focus groups sessions conducted in London and in Barcelona. These focus groups are aimed at researching citizens’ attitudes and motivations towards participation, with a special attention to practices in and through the media, but also to their perceptions about public life and public engagement. By doing so, the research stresses the importance of conducting research about online participation in relation with the offline context of each research participant, rather than studying online media participatory practices in isolation. The quantitative part of this study is based on content analysis of the forms of participation adopted in news media websites, categorised in a study sheet based on the different kinds of interactivity (selective, participative and productive). In this way, citizens’ attitudes and motivations are then compared with the actual adoption of participatory options by news media websites.

Abstract:
Practices commonly termed participatory or citizen journalism, such as blogging and publishing content in participatory news media, have triggered interest in academic and media discourses alike. The discussion has centred on the significance of participatory journalism and whether it leads to democratisation of media and to redefining journalism and its ethics. This thesis examines online participatory journalism practices and what enhances or impedes them by drawing on a close and systematic analysis of qualitative interviews with reporters and facilitators of participatory media. The research considers both the meso level of media organisations in their socio-cultural context and the micro level of reporters, and is comparative and transcultural in scope. The focus is on the international edition of the South Korean news organisation OhmyNews and on two Indymedia collectives, namely, Indybay in California in the USA and the no-longer active Vaikuttava Tietotoimisto in Finland. The study employs Dahlgren’s (2009) analytic frame of civic cultures that, although it downplays skills and somewhat problematically assumes equal weight of all dimensions, proved valuable in addressing several key aspects to participatory journalism as a mode of civic engagement. The research demonstrates how reporters’ journalistic activities do not exist in a vacuum, but are shaped by participatory media organisations, for example, through the values they promote and the type of journalism, the access to sources and training they facilitate. Furthermore, the thesis argues that participatory media practices are less distinct from those of mainstream media than may have been assumed. Underpinning the analysis of media organisations are the theories of alternative media and of voluntary associations, whereas Mouffe’s (2000a) political theory of agonistic pluralism is applied to assess the viability of an agonistic space online. The findings, apart from the instances of its constructive uses, point toward the difficulties in sustaining an agonistic online space.

Abstract:
This study investigates the work of moderating and managing audience comments in two Australian online news organisations to find how their staff conceive, practice, value, and develop these new intermediary duties. Using a Bourdieusian analytical framework, it examines whether these work roles operate as new forms of cultural intermediation in news production and how they are influenced by ‘the field of journalism’, which comprises journalism’s power relations, norms, logics and history. Using interviews and participant observation, this study comprehensively documents the distinct objectives, tasks and practices of comment moderators and community managers, as well as identifying the people, aspects of social and cultural capital, and organisational systems that have influenced their approaches to the work. The study demonstrates that comment moderation and management work culturally intermediate between the organisation, readers, and commenters as fringe producers, with a focus on communicating the organisation’s vision for comment sections. However, it finds a distinction between the tasks and workplace status of comment moderators and community managers and reveals prioritisation’s importance in shaping discussions’ flow and tenor. The field of journalism significantly influences this work, as workers with journalism experience evaluated comments based on their contribution or adherence to journalistic values. Participants’ field alignment also affected how they moderated comments or managed their community, with most comparing their comment sections and practices to those of other prominent journalistic organisations. These results show the need for more development of cultural intermediation strategies and techniques to enable online news organisations to build constructive commenting communities while communicating their editorial values.

Dashti, Ali A. "The effect of online journalism on the freedom of the press : the case of Kuwait." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/794.

Abstract:
Online journalism has brought new features of journalism practices for local journalists and forced the expansion of their freedom. The Internet as a whole became the tool for freedom of expression for many suppressed countries, and online journalism became an alternative for press freedom in cyberspace. The diffusion of information enabled more opportunities for freedom of expression and speech prosperity, leading to a higher level of freedom in local press. This research project aims to examine the effect of online journalism on the freedom of the local press in the state of Kuwait. Since mid 1990s, when the Internet was introduced in Kuwait, a new phenomenon of press freedom started to rise. After many decades of relying heavily on local newspapers and controlled radio and TV, many Kuwaitis switched to the Internet to obtain information, news and political analysis. The political dispute of power after the death of Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Jabber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah on 15 of January 2006, followed by the public demand to change the electoral constituencies voting system of the National Assembly, and the dissolving of the National Assembly in May 2006 forced many Kuwaitis to go online to get the latest news and analysis regarding the two issues. Kuwaiti online journalism became the source for instant updated information during the disputes. Many local writers praised their work on local press. Mohammad Abdul Qader Al-Jasim, a columnist and former editor in chief for Alwatan local newspaper, in his online Web site ‘Meezan’, provided non-censored detailed analysis of these situations without any restrictions or fear of government interference which was considered as a taboo “red line” no one was permitted to cross. The researcher used three different tools (survey, online content analysis, and interviews) to determine the effect of online journalism on journalist’s practices and the freedom of the press in Kuwait, focusing on the most popular Kuwaiti personal writers’ sites, weblogs and forums. The results show that online journalism affected journalist’s practices but did not replace the traditional practices. The Internet became a source and communication platform for many local journalists. At the same time, online journalism became one of the tools that helped increase the level of freedom in the local press. The language of online journalism took a different direction from the local press with more freedom to write, discuss, and share ideas online with less fear of government retribution. What was considered a taboo “red line” in the local press became an acceptable “green line” online. Local press officials recognized this effect on the local freedom, but disagree on the factors that really caused the freedom of the local press to increase.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the distinctive forms of journalism that have emerged in mainstream news websites in mainland China. Two case studies, the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and the H1N1 influenza pandemic in 2009, are employed to identify features in Chinese and Western news online. Specifically, a comparison is made between the in-depth news sections of popular mainstream news websites in China and those in the United States, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand. The study finds that the Chinese version of mainstream web news genre differs significantly from the Western version. This thesis argues that journalists’ practice is strongly context dependent. Distinctive economic, organizational, social and cultural factors contribute to shaping Chinese web journalism in a way that contradicts the notion of a homogeneous worldwide journalism or of a single set of norms for journalism. The study challenges the dominance of the political explanatory framework that considers political factors as the most important approach to study Chinese web-based media. In the face of a sparse literature and sporadic studies concerning the development of the internet as a novel platform in China for news production and transmission, this thesis aims to bring more academic interest to an overlooked research area and to contribute to a broader understanding of the actual diversity of global communication research.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Globally weblogs have burgeoned since their development in the late nineties. The phenomenon has demystified the technical side of online publishing, allowing individuals without specialised knowledge to create and update their own websites. Weblogs are already used in a number of professional sectors such as journalism, marketing, politics and now also education. This study is approached from a uses and gratifications framework and provides a broad overview of the emergence, structure, applications, pitfalls and future of blogs in education. Weblogs are also investigated in relation to other social software tools and learning theories.

Lee, Eugenia. "Stories in the data: An analysis of climate change visualisations in online news." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/20298.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the way journalists are using and adapting visualisations in climate change news, in order to investigate the meaning-making potential of an emerging form of digital journalism where methods of information visualisation are used to translate specialist knowledge and often complex, multivariate datasetsinto images that are more easily understood by, and of social value to, the general public. Applying a dual methodological framework of heuristic evaluation and social semiotic analysis, this thesis presents a novel method of exploring both the abstraction and translation of climate change data into multimodal visual displays of quantitative information. By conducting a content and textual analyses of 547 climate change visualisation stories collected in the year of 2015 from seven Western generalist news publications that have made a commitment to excellence in data journalism, this thesis found that despite the steady rise in the popularity of data journalism, journalists are not widely adopting scientific methods of data analysis and representation. Over half of the visualisations examined were sourced from science communicators and government bodies, reinforcing traditional news power relations. Further, the textual analyses found that visualisations operate discursively. Rather than present data in systemised, interactive ways, journalists are retaining a large degree of narrative control over the way meaning is construed with and through the use of visualisations. These stories thus illustrate a continuation of, rather than a digital break with, traditional journalism. Such findings pose a challenge to the normative assumptions that data journalism adds value to news by improving its openness, transparency, accountability, and accuracy.
