Abstract:
An online payment system allows a customer to make a payment to an online merchant or a service provider. Payment gateways, a channel between customers and payment processors, use various security tools to secure a customer’s payment information, usually debit or credit card information, during an online payment. However, the security provided by a payment gateway cannot completely protect a customer’s payment information when a merchant also has the ability to obtain the payment information in some form. Furthermore, not all merchants provide a secure payment environment to their customers and, despite having a standard payment policy, adhere to it. Consequently, this exposes a customer’s payment information to risks of being compromised or misused by merchants or stolen by hackers and spammers. In this thesis we propose a new approach to payment systems in which a customer’s payment information cannot be obtained by a merchant. A customer sends his payment information directly to a payment gateway and a payment gateway, upon verifying the transaction, sends a payment to the appropriate merchant. We use the Pedersen commitment scheme along with dual signatures to securely transfer funds to a merchant and protect a customer’s payment information from any Internet vulnerabilities.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis represents an investigation into financial fraud in online banking and card payment systems in the UK and China, involving network security, online financial transactions, internet fraud, card payment systems and individuals' perception of and behaviours towards electronic environments. In contrast to previous studies, the research questions were tackled by survey questionnaires both in the UK and China, with a particular interest in fraud and attempted fraud. The main findings from the UK respondents were that those with higher IT skill and younger respondents are more likely to be defrauded on the internet. Certain types of online activities are associated with higher risks of fraud, these being internet banking; online shopping and media downloading. Furthermore, four predictors (internet banking, online education services, downloading media and length of debit card usage) provided significant effects in the logistic regression model to explain fraud occurrence in the UK. Based on the data collected in China, younger respondents were more likely to have higher general IT skill and higher educational qualifications. However, online shopping was the only online activity which was significantly correlated to fraud occurrence. Finally, two predictors (frequency of usage of online shopping and number of debit cards) were selected in the logistic regression model to explain fraud occurrence in China.

<p>The purpose of this thesis work was to make a survey of current on-line payment technologies and find out which are they and how do they work? Compare and analyze them from a security point of view, as well as a usability point of view. What is good? What is bad? What is lacking?</p><p>To achieve this purpose, an overview of the current on-line payment technologies was acquired through academic books and papers, Internet sites, magazines. Basic cryptographic and security related techniques were studied for the security analysis of current on-line payment systems.</p><p>In this work, various current on-line payment systems were classified into two groups [Macro and Micro on-line payment systems]. This classification was based on the mode of on-line payment transactions. To analyze these on-line payment systems, a set of payment system requirements were formed [Security Issues, Usability Issues, Anonymity, Scalability etc].</p><p>Under the category of Macro payment system, Credit Card payment system, Debit Card payment system, Stored Value Card payment system, Electronic Check payment system, Electronic Cash payment system, Electronic account transfer payment system and mobile payment system transactions were examined.</p><p>Under the category of Micro payment system, Hash Chain based Payment System, Hash Collisions and Hash sequences based Payment Systems, Shared Secrete Keys based Payment Systems and Probability based payment systems were examined.</p><p>Based on the requirements of payment system, these on-line payment systems were analyzed and compared. In the analysis phase, the advantages and drawbacks of these payment systems were figured out.</p><p>It was found from the study that the credit card based payment systems are the most widely used means of conducting on-line payments. It is evident that credit card based payment systems satisfy stakeholder requirements the best, as they offer more flexible payment options, having a large user-base, benefit from familiarity and simplicity of use and also allow international payments. The other on-line payment systems lack this flexibility</p><p>It can also be extracted from the study that users want more simplified, convenient and secure on-line payment systems. Thus the futuristic on-line payment systems will have all secure payment options into one system.</p>

Transferability is a desirable property because it allows for flexible, private commerce where neither the seller nor the buyer must identify themselves to the bank. In some cases, however, anonymity can be abused and lead to problems such as blackmail and money laundering. In 1996, Camenisch, Piveteau, and Stadler introduced the concept of fairness for (non-transferable) ECash, where a trusted authority can revoke the anonymity of certain transactions as needed. To our knowledge, no current ECash system supports both anonymous transfer and fairness. We have designed and implemented such a system. Also, we formally describe a set of desirable properties for ECash systems and prove that our system meets all of these properties under the Strong RSA assumption and the Decisional Diffie-Hellman assumption in the random oracle model. Furthermore, we provide extensions for our system that could allow it to deal with offline payments and micropayments. Our system has been implemented in java. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.<br>Problems are occurring in the digital business economy as companies try to realize a tangible profit. As network infrastructures improve, the value of information becomes less and less since marginal costs for digital goods is practically zero and searching the cost of goods is also extremely low. How, then, can the media industry remain profitable in the digital business economy? One way to retain the value of digital goods is through the use of firm governmental regulations, but this is still insufficient because of the ever-expanding network infrastructure and the growing threat of piracy. This thesis discusses potential strategies to be used in today's digital business economy based on current difficulties. It proposes an integrated business model for an on-line contents distribution business and an electronic payment business which complement each other. It is well-known that content distribution businesses are facing severe threats from piracy. By providing content for free as a complementary service for profitable businesses, it will be shown that media distribution companies can maximize the value of their contents library, which would otherwise be worthless in face of growing piracy. The thesis also discusses the migration process in an integrated business model by utilizing a System Dynamics approach to the analysis. The electronic payments business is regarded as a profit driver that can be complemented by the attractive value proposition of free online contents distribution businesses. For an infrastructure-oriented business like electronic payments, broad acceptance of such a service is critical to reducing customers' perceived risk. By introducing free content downloads, a business strategy is proposed that accelerates customer penetration and rapid migration to a profitable and integrated business of online contents distribution and electronic payment. <p> Utilizing a case study approach, the purpose of this study was to examine the barriers to adopting an e-government system for online registration and online payments for programs and services of a public municipal recreation department. Through personal interviews, web site observation, and policy examination, the researcher used the data collected to identify three main themes. With these themes, barriers to adopting e-government were explained in detail and compared to previous quantitative findings. Through this research, three main themes were formed: (a) fears&mdash;lack of security and abuse by staff and the public, (b) financial barriers, and (c) preparedness. </p>

Linear Regression is used to analyze the relationships between payment systems, user satisfaction, and retention. This study methods were adopted literature review and questionnaire tool as a research tool of MMORPG Mall and Monthly Payment Systems scale. The subjects were university students and users of Bahamut online game website. This study used SPSS for Windows 12.0 for statistical data analysis included Descriptive Statistics, Reliability, Validity Analysis, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, and Regression Analysis. The main findings of this study are as follows: First, Payment systems have significant effects on user satisfaction. Second, User satisfaction has a significant effect on user retention
