Abstract:
This paper breaks down my process of transitioning to a new environment through ethnographic documentation. Through the progression of my creative work, I explore the various ways in which I express my own internal feelings through my art. By expressing an alienation within a foreign country in a multitude of filmic ways, these depictions help illustrate my mental and physical journey. My work is informed by psychoanalytic theory and I am most influenced by Jacques Lacan and Sigmund Freud. These theories help me understand the human condition and how I create media art to help me come to terms with my surroundings. Another part of my influence is the genre of ethnographic film, and in my use of this style, I attempt to portray the isolation that I’ve experienced as an American citizen while living in Ankara, Turkey. Many contemporary artists have influenced my approach to the post-production treatment of my ethnographic footage such as David Lynch and the Propeller Group. In addition to a summary of these influences, I discuss the thesis exhibition and my plans for the future.

Brink, Eloise Karin. "An exploratory study on telephone interpreting in the Western Cape healthcare sector." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/95873.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Communication in a global context is seriously hampered by language barriers. These barriers pose special challenges to service delivery, particularly in the healthcare sector. Onsite interpreting is considered most conducive to enable effective communication. In South Africa, however, it is not practical and financially viable to employ onsite interpreters for all the possible language combinations. Telephone interpreting is proposed as an alternative to onsite interpreting and Folio Online’s InterTel service offers telephone interpreting in the Western Cape healthcare sector. This study gauges whether the InterTel service has the potential to contribute in any way to effective communication in the Western Cape healthcare sector. In South Africa, language barriers do not only exist in communication with tourists or immigrants, but also among the country’s own inhabitants. Furthermore, effective communication in the healthcare sector is particularly crucial. Miscommunication may lead to misdiagnosis and/or incorrect usage of medication, which in turn may result in death. The possible loss of life renders the issue of overcoming language barriers in the healthcare sector an important one. The aim of the study is to argue descriptively about InterTel telephone interpreting service as a viable solution to the communication difficulties between healthcare practitioners and patients in the Western Cape healthcare sector. The research had to be narrowed down and instead the study descriptively argues whether InterTel service contributes to communication in the Western Cape healthcare sector. The researcher conducted an interview with the Folio InterTel project manager and sent out questionnaires to the Folio telephone interpreters. Five transcribed recordings of conversations between healthcare practitioners, patients and Folio telephone interpreters were analysed. The findings of this study echo the findings of related studies reported in literature on telephone interpreting. The conclusion is that the Folio InterTel service makes a valuable contribution to more effective communication in Western Cape healthcare facilities.

Abstract:
The present study explored the use of translation technology in second language (L2) writing by English as a Second Language (ESL) students at the University level. The appropriate role of translation, and specifically translation technology, in L2 curricula has been the subject of theoretical and practical debate. In order to address knowledge gaps relevant to this debate, the present study sought to document students’ current use of translation technology, specifically free online translation (FOT) tools, and their opinions about these tools. The study’s mixed-methods design included video observations and questionnaires regarding FOT use completed by 19 university students enrolled in a high intermediate-level ESL course. Semi-structured follow-up interviews were conducted with the six participants who were observed using FOT tools extensively on the video recordings. Results showed that high intermediate-level ESL students have a primarily positive attitude toward FOT tools. In addition, the majority of students reported using such tools regularly, even though only about one third of the students were actually observed using the tools significantly in the video recordings. Results are discussed in the context of the ongoing debate over whether and how translation technology should be used in L2 classrooms.

Abstract : This study describes the key steps in developing online parallel corpus-based tools for processing COPA-TRAD (copa-trad.ufsc.br), a parallel corpus compiled for translation research and pedagogy. The study draws on Fernandes s (2009) proposal for corpus compilation, which divides the compiling process into three main parts: corpus design, corpus building and corpus processing. This compiling process received contributions from the good development practices of Software Engineering, especially the ones advocated by Pressman (2011). The tools developed can, for example, assist in the investigation of certain types of texts and translational practices related to certain linguistic patterns such as collocations and semantic prosody. As a result of these applications, COPA-TRAD becomes a suitable tool for the investigation of empirical phenomena with a view to translation research and pedagogy.

Yu, Chuan. "Collaborative translation in online communities of practices: an ethnographic study of Yeeyan /Yu Chuan." HKBU Institutional Repository, 2017. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/366.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a qualitative study on the processes of user-generated crowdsourced collaborative translation in Yeeyan, China’s largest online translation community. Collaborative translation is still a relatively emergent area of scholarship and research so far has focused mainly on audiovisual translation practice. Studies which focus on the co-production of written texts mostly provide only a fragmented picture and treat collaborative translation as a linear process. In this thesis, I examine the translation initiated and undertaken by two or more volunteer translators who collaboratively produce a translated text, focusing on how they interact with each other, who they are, why they participate, and what meanings they give to their behaviour. Adopting an ethnographic methodology, I have conducted longitudinal in-depth fieldwork in Yeeyan, using the methods of participant observation and interactive interview. Three types of data are collected: 1) fieldnotes; 2) the material resources archived on the Yeeyan website and the translation manuscripts; and 3) elicited interview data. After my preliminary thematic analysis, I undertake a micro-level discourse analysis, examining the participants’ behaviours, decision-making processes, emerging identity roles and perceptions on competence as they unfolded during the collaboration process. Primarily informed by Wenger’s “communities of practice” theory (CoP theory), the analysis reveals that Yeeyan is first a participatory media platform which provides Chinese readers with access to knowledge and information not available in their mother language, as well as allowing its users to play an active role in the production and circulation of the media content. More profoundly, Yeeyan is an online CoP where a crowd of translators from different professional and disciplinary backgrounds interact with each other regularly for the shared practices they are passionate about and for the shared enterprises they care for. The findings suggest that the process of collaborative translation in Yeeyan is de facto an experience of meaning negotiation. First, competence in a CoP is obtained through mutual recognition from other members as a result of their active and continuous participation. Second, meanings in Yeeyan are not static, but are dynamically negotiated between the participants, depending on the genre of the text being translated, which specialized expertise the translators possess, how competent they are in the Yeeyan community, and what meanings they intend to give to their behaviours individually and collectively. Third, a CoP like Yeeyan is also a complex social learning system which consists of multiple interrelated sub-communities. Yeeyan members’ endeavour to solve translation problems and thereby increase their competence also contributes to forming a shared history of learning. Beyond these findings, this thesis also makes broader methodological and theoretical contributions. It demonstrates how the use of an immersive ethnographic methodology, hitherto seldom applied in the TS field, can provide more holistic insights into translators’ interactions, translation manuscripts and the entire collaboration process. The use of CoP theory offers us a new perspective that explains collaborative translation as a social practice through which – and to which – the participants ascribe meanings in the process of translating and interacting.

Abstract:
This thesis research aimed to demonstrate the use of information and communication technology in online learning by means of a course in the area of legal translation in the language pair English-Portuguese. It is based on the needs and interests of translators who are professional, scholars or in training and wish to improve in the translation area, which has become highly demanding and competitive. When the issue is either related to commuting for prospects that are located in areas which do not offer the intended courses nearby or conveniently located, or when course pre-established time table offers are not compatible, the search for alternatives to suit such demand begins. The research aimed to verify the viability and describe the implementation and development of a course as to didactical and pedagogical aspects in translators´ training, development and improvement. The studies of Knowles (1984) and Mendes (2012) with regard to the principles of Andragogy and adult learning-teaching; Presas (2000), Hurtado Albir (1999) and Pym (2006 to 2012) as to translator´s training; Aubert (1998), Chaffey (1997), Reichmann (2102), and Sarcevic (1997) for legal translation and Morán (2009), Mendes (2012) and Simão Neto (2002) for online learning, among others, are the theoretic basis for the research. The tools offered in the Google Groups and Google Drive services were used in the online course pilot, as well as the two subsequent versions. There was a total of 35 participants who enrolled for the online course and 12 participants for the face-to-face course offered as a means of comparison. The description of the results will reveal the participants´ interaction and some aspects of their performance as well as their level of approval and improvement according to the survey conducted at the end of the course.

Abstract:
Triggered by globalisation and the increasing media convergence enabled by digital communication technologies, fansubbing has become one of the most observable aspects of Chinese participatory culture, both domestically and internationally. Informed by concepts drawn from the science of complexity and drawing on social self-organisation theory (Fuchs 2002), this study adopts a systems perspective and the method of netnography (Kozinets 2010) to bring to light the dynamics of collective identity formation in The Last Fantasy (TLF) fansubbing group, one of the most influential fansubbing networks in China. In particular, this study aims to reveal how TLF’s fansubbers deploy digital technologies to facilitate their daily subtitling activities, build and maintain their relationships, and express a collective voice in relation to the specific media context in China. Findings from this study are used to evaluate the role played by amateur translation, as exemplified by fansubbing activities carried out by TLF’s fansubbers, in China’s participatory culture. It is hoped that this study will enrich our understanding of the phenomenon of amateur translation in an increasingly networked society.

González, Rubio Jesús. "On the effective deployment of current machine translation technology." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de València, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10251/37888.

Full text
Abstract:
Machine translation is a fundamental technology that is gaining more importance each day in our multilingual society. Companies and particulars are turning their attention to machine translation since it dramatically cuts down their expenses on translation and interpreting. However, the output of current machine translation systems is still far from the quality of translations generated by human experts. The overall goal of this thesis is to narrow down this quality gap by developing new methodologies and tools that improve the broader and more efficient deployment of machine translation technology. We start by proposing a new technique to improve the quality of the translations generated by fully-automatic machine translation systems. The key insight of our approach is that different translation systems, implementing different approaches and technologies, can exhibit different strengths and limitations. Therefore, a proper combination of the outputs of such different systems has the potential to produce translations of improved quality. We present minimum Bayes¿ risk system combination, an automatic approach that detects the best parts of the candidate translations and combines them to generate a consensus translation that is optimal with respect to a particular performance metric. We thoroughly describe the formalization of our approach as a weighted ensemble of probability distributions and provide efficient algorithms to obtain the optimal consensus translation according to the widespread BLEU score. Empirical results show that the proposed approach is indeed able to generate statistically better translations than the provided candidates. Compared to other state-of-the-art systems combination methods, our approach reports similar performance not requiring any additional data but the candidate translations. Then, we focus our attention on how to improve the utility of automatic translations for the end-user of the system. Since automatic translations are not perfect, a desirable feature of machine translation systems is the ability to predict at run-time the quality of the generated translations. Quality estimation is usually addressed as a regression problem where a quality score is predicted from a set of features that represents the translation. However, although the concept of translation quality is intuitively clear, there is no consensus on which are the features that actually account for it. As a consequence, quality estimation systems for machine translation have to utilize a large number of weak features to predict translation quality. This involves several learning problems related to feature collinearity and ambiguity, and due to the ¿curse¿ of dimensionality. We address these challenges by adopting a two-step training methodology. First, a dimensionality reduction method computes, from the original features, the reduced set of features that better explains translation quality. Then, a prediction model is built from this reduced set to finally predict the quality score. We study various reduction methods previously used in the literature and propose two new ones based on statistical multivariate analysis techniques. More specifically, the proposed dimensionality reduction methods are based on partial least squares regression. The results of a thorough experimentation show that the quality estimation systems estimated following the proposed two-step methodology obtain better prediction accuracy that systems estimated using all the original features. Moreover, one of the proposed dimensionality reduction methods obtained the best prediction accuracy with only a fraction of the original features. This feature reduction ratio is important because it implies a dramatic reduction of the operating times of the quality estimation system. An alternative use of current machine translation systems is to embed them within an interactive editing environment where the system and a human expert collaborate to generate error-free translations. This interactive machine translation approach have shown to reduce supervision effort of the user in comparison to the conventional decoupled post-edition approach. However, interactive machine translation considers the translation system as a passive agent in the interaction process. In other words, the system only suggests translations to the user, who then makes the necessary supervision decisions. As a result, the user is bound to exhaustively supervise every suggested translation. This passive approach ensures error-free translations but it also demands a large amount of supervision effort from the user. Finally, we study different techniques to improve the productivity of current interactive machine translation systems. Specifically, we focus on the development of alternative approaches where the system becomes an active agent in the interaction process. We propose two different active approaches. On the one hand, we describe an active interaction approach where the system informs the user about the reliability of the suggested translations. The hope is that this information may help the user to locate translation errors thus improving the overall translation productivity. We propose different scores to measure translation reliability at the word and sentence levels and study the influence of such information in the productivity of an interactive machine translation system. Empirical results show that the proposed active interaction protocol is able to achieve a large reduction in supervision effort while still generating translations of very high quality. On the other hand, we study an active learning framework for interactive machine translation. In this case, the system is not only able to inform the user of which suggested translations should be supervised, but it is also able to learn from the user-supervised translations to improve its future suggestions. We develop a value-of-information criterion to select which automatic translations undergo user supervision. However, given its high computational complexity, in practice we study different selection strategies that approximate this optimal criterion. Results of a large scale experimentation show that the proposed active learning framework is able to obtain better compromises between the quality of the generated translations and the human effort required to obtain them. Moreover, in comparison to a conventional interactive machine translation system, our proposal obtained translations of twice the quality with the same supervision effort.

Abstract:
Nowadays, the technology enhanced learning area has experienced a strong growth with many new learning approaches like blended learning, flip teaching, massive open online courses, and open educational resources to complement face-to-face lectures. Specifically, video lectures are fast becoming an everyday educational resource in higher education for all of these new learning approaches, and they are being incorporated into existing university curricula around the world. Transcriptions and translations can improve the utility of these audiovisual assets, but rarely are present due to a lack of cost-effective solutions to do so. Lecture searchability, accessibility to people with impairments, translatability for foreign students, plagiarism detection, content recommendation, note-taking, and discovery of content-related videos are examples of advantages of the presence of transcriptions. For this reason, the aim of this thesis is to test in real-life case studies ways to obtain multilingual captions for video lectures in a cost-effective way by using state-of-the-art automatic speech recognition and machine translation techniques. Also, we explore interaction protocols to review these automatic transcriptions and translations, because unfortunately automatic subtitles are not error-free. In addition, we take a step further into multilingualism by extending our findings and evaluation to several languages. Finally, the outcomes of this thesis have been applied to thousands of video lectures in European universities and institutions.

Abstract:
We propose a model of search term selection process based on our empirical study of professional searchers during the pre-online stage of the search process. The model characterizes the selection of search terms as the navigation of different discourses. Discourse refers to the way of talking and thinking about a certain topic; there often exists multiple, diverse discourses on the same topic. When selecting search terms, searchers appear to navigate a variety of discourses, i.e., they view the topic of a client's search request from the perspective of multiple discourse communities, and evaluate and synthesize differences and similarities among those discourses when selecting search terms. Six discourses emerged as sources of search terms in our study. These discourses are controlled vocabularies, documents and domains, the practice of indexing, clients' search requests, databases and the searchers' own search experience. Data further suggest that searchers navigate these discourses dynamically and have preferences for certain discourses. Conceptualizing the selection of search terms as a meeting place of different discourses provides new insights into the complex nature of the search term selection process. It emphasizes the multiplicity and complexity of the sources of search terms, the dynamic nature of the search term selection process, and the complex analysis and synthesis of differences and similarities among sources of search terms. It suggests that searchers may need to understand fundamental aspects of multiple discourses in order to select search terms.

This multiple-case study explores the Web search behaviors of a total of six participants. These include a naturally occurring sample of four postgraduate translation trainees (in their first year of studies) who enrolled in an introductory course on technical and scientific translation, and two additional subjects (a PhD student of translation with three years of casual professional translation experience and a translation teacher with over 15 years of experience in the discipline) who participated in a pilot study conducted prior to the main study. Given that the need to seek, retrieve, use, and generate translation information depends on the type of users and the translation tasks performed, the study focuses on two specific tasks dealing with the translation of two popular-science texts from Spanish into English. In particular, the study examines the online search behaviors of all participants in relation to a number of translation task attributes (text type and translation brief) as well as user attributes (translation expertise, Web search expertise, and domain knowledge). While for the first task data was obtained from all six research participants, the second task was only carried out by the four translation trainees.

Abstract:
This thesis will examine interlingual subtitles for online media. The research takes place within the descriptive translation studies paradigm. The source material consists of subtitles for a selection of webcasts found on the video sharing platform YouTube. The analysis will examine how the original dialogue has been translated as well as the form that the subtitles are presented in. An analysis of norm governed subtitles for television programs that follow established subtitling norms will also be made for comparison. Online media and broadcast media are divided into a dynamic and static category respectively in order to treat webcasts as an individual form of media. Dynamic media is defined as digital media created for the Internet, and static media is defined as media created for televised broadcasts. The results do not include qualitative assessments but have shown that subtitles for webcasts do not follow subtitling norms and display a wide range of unconventional approaches. The determining factor that illustrates the nature of webcast subtitles is attributed the diverse group of people writing them.

Abstract:
The Internet – when defined as a massive, uncontrolled database of information – is not a reliable source of information. Despite this, it has developed into the default terminology tool for most translators today. This study explores what criteria are used by translators to define website credibility and whether translation experience affects the criteria used. Three groups of differently experienced translators were asked to translate two technical texts from English to Swedish and document the websites they visited. The documentation was used as the basis for follow-up interviews, where the translators were asked to argue for their choices. The results show a significant similarity in application of criteria between student and experienced translators, indicating that other factors than experience are at play. Moreover, source text complexity does not affect the criteria used but rather to what extent research is performed. These results can be used to encourage further research into the information search behavior of translators.

Abstract:
The English translation of the Swedish compound fönsterbräda into windowsill, or the proper noun Danmark into Denmark makes perfect sense. But how about the compound fossilbränslefri as simply fossil fuel or the name Mälaren as Lake?  All four of these translations have been produced with the help of automatic machine translation. The aim of this paper is to present the expanding field of application of machine translation and some issues related to this type of translation. More specifically, the study has looked at Google Translate as one of the most commonly used machine translation systems online, and how it responds to the two linguistic categories that were selected for this small study: compound nouns and proper nouns. Besides analyzing these categories, two different text types were chosen: general information articles from a local authority website (Stockholm City) and patent texts, both of which belong to the expanding field of application of Google Translate. The results of the study show that in terms of compound nouns, neither of the text types proved to be significantly better suited for machine translation than the other and neither had an error rate below 20 %. Most of the errors related to words being erroneously omitted in the English output and words which were incorrectly translated in relation to context. As for proper nouns, the patent texts contained none and subsequently no error analysis could be made, whereas the general information articles included 76 proper nouns (out of a total word count of 810). The most prominent error related to the Swedish version not being maintained in the English output where it should have been, e.g. translating Abrahamsberg as Abraham rock. The errors in both of the linguistic categories had varying impact on the meaning of the texts, some of which distorted the meaning of the word completely, and some which were of minor importance. This factor, along with the fact that the reader of the text influences how the comprehension level of the text is perceived through their language and subject knowledge, makes it difficult to evaluate the full impact of the various errors. It can, however, be said that patent text could pose as a better option for machine translation than general information articles in relation to proper nouns, as this text type is likely to contain no or very few proper nouns.

Writing Strategies and Written Text Production in Upper Secondary School Spanish Classes.) Stockholm University, Studies in Language Education 12. ISBN 978-91-7649-090-7. Written in Swedish, English and Spanish with abstracts in the three languages and a summary in English. The present work is based upon three studies performed between 2012 and 2014 at the Swedish upper secondary school with pupils studying Spanish as a foreign language. The first study investigates through lesson diaries and an online survey the pupils’ attitudes towards and perceptions of computer use in language learning at large, and specifically of online grammar exercises as compared to paper-based exercises. The participating pupils showed mixed attitudes towards using online exercises for grammar practice, with high demands on websites’ design and user friendliness, as well as for the correctness and reliability of automated corrections. A majority preferred mixed teaching methods (including computer use, teacher-led explanations and the use of paper- and pen-based exercises, especially translation tasks). The major advantage of using computers was considered to be for essay writing and information search. The second study investigates how a group of pupils use online resources when writing essays in Spanish, focussing on their extensive use of online translation services such as Google translate. The writing strategies of these pupils with free access to the Internet are compared to the strategies of another group working without Internet access. The third study examines effects of the use of online translation on the language in the pupils’ essays. The texts written with online translation are compared to texts written without Internet access, but with access to printed dictionaries. Few statistically significant differences can be seen between the two groups. These concern grammatical and lexical complexity and accuracy. The most clear differences regard spelling and article/noun/adjective congruence (with higher degrees of accuracy among the users of online translation), and syntax (with fewer errors in the group writing without online translation). The grammatical complexity was also somewhat higher in the online translation group. As for fluency (text length) and complexity, differences can be correlated to the pupils’ proficiency in Spanish, whereas no such correlation can be seen regarding accuracy.

Jo tikslas – gretinant dvi kalbas, aptarti ir susisteminti kylančias vertimo problemas bei ieškoti būdų joms spręsti. Darbe taikomi aprašomasis, gretinamasis ir tekstynų lingvistikos tyrimo metodai bei lyginami įvairūs kiekybiniai ir kokybiniai duomenys. Disertacijos tiriamąją medžiagą sudaro apie 4 tūkst. konstrukcijų. Tyrimui sukauptas ir tirtas apie 1 mln. žodžių lygiagretusis tekstynas, sudarytas iš grožinės, populiariosios mokslinės literatūros, kanceliarinių bei administracinių tekstų. Tekstyne rasta 651 skirtinga konstrukcija, o bendras verbonominalinių konstrukcijų vartojimo atvejų skaičius – 1230. Disertacijoje aptariami konkretūs tiriamų konstrukcijų vertimo atvejai, nagrinėjamos formos ir reikšmės lygmenyse vertėjams kylančios problemos ir siūlomi galimi jų sprendimo būdai. Kadangi iš/į vokiečių kalbą verčiantys vertėjai priversti naudotis vieninteliu dvikalbiu vokiečių–lietuvių kalbų žodynu, darbe analizuojama, kaip jame pateikiami stabilieji junginiai, bei konstatuojama, kad informacija pateikiama nesistemingai, todėl pristatomas dvikalbės internetinės verbonominalinių konstrukcijų duomenų bazės modelis.
This study deals with problems of translation of collocations between German and Lithuanian. The syntactic pattern under analysis is Verb + (Preposition) + Noun, i.e. so-called verbal-nominal constructions in German. The aim of the study is to contrast the two languages and identify translation problems as well as propose appropriate solutions. Methodology used for the analysis involves descriptive, contrastive and corpus linguistics approaches, including processing of various quantitative and qualitative data. The material analysed in the dissertation consists of ca. 4,000 constructions. A parallel corpus of 1 million words was used. It was compiled from texts of fiction, popular science writing and administrative office communication. 651 construction types of the chosen pattern were identified in the corpus with the total frequency of tokens of 1230 items. The analysis was focused on the translation of individual types of constructions which often pose a number of difficulties at the level of form and meaning. Owing to the fact that translators between German and Lithuanian have only one German-Lithuanian dictionary at their disposal, the study also involves a critical revision of this lexicographic tool which, as it was found, often contains inadequate information on collocations. The author proposes a model of a bilingual electronic data base as a more advanced tool for the translation of verbal-nominal constructions.

Deep personal connections foster rich learning. Making such connections is one of the most valuable benefits of attending face-to-face conferences. Online technologies offer the opportunity to meet with more people at a fraction of the cost. However, it is more challenging to experience the immediacy of face-to-face meetings in online gatherings and virtual conversations. Forming strong ties with people at conferences is much easier offline, than online, where it is easy to get distracted and harder to reach out and connect. This thesis extends Unhangout, a platform for online unconferences, and investigates how we can help people translate short, live online interactions into lasting relationships. I mimicked some of the successful features of the offline unconferences into an online experience on Unhangout. I designed and implemented a series of interventions around three distinct phases of an online event, "Who to connect with?", "How to connect with others?" and "How to stay connected?" and explored their impact on people's behaviors and ability to form relationships with each other. Throughout this study, the purpose is to help users of an online event make deeper and longer-lasting connections with other participants.

Abstract:
Digital fan cultures (cyberfandoms) have generated new forms of socialization and communication because: a) they revolve around texts and discourses of popular culture which circulate through the internet; b) they foster social links among people from diverse ethnic, cultural and linguistic origins united by a common interest; and c) they enable the articulation of new identities and their representation in multimodal texts. In this ethnographically-oriented case study, we explore how Shiro, a fan of manga comics, constructs and represents her identity in the online activities she shares with other fans. To this aim, we describe the digital literacy practices in which she participates; we identify and analyze the different semiotic resources (linguistic, graphic and typographic) she appropriates in these practices; and we examine how she reuses these semiotic resources in her own performances to construct a positive and relevant self-image in the community. Our results show that Shiro takes part in practices of collaborative translation and editing of manga comics (scanlation), she maintains a profile as a fan in Facebook and Blogger, and she participates in digital conversations with other fans. In these practices, she appropriates resources associated with several languages (Spanish, English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean) and several semiotic modes (e.g. typographic fonts, kaomoji, pictures of manga comics, etc.) and she recontextualizes them in different communicative situations according to her own rhetorical interests and the community’s values, norms and conventions. Our analysis reveals that manga fans have developed culturally specific ways of meaning-making which reflect their ideology and challenge traditional views of languages as abstract and autonomous systems. We argue that these fan practices illustrate the growing semiotic complexity and fluidity of contemporary communication and we draw some implications for language education.

Abstract:
Sexual and gender minorities (SGM) often face worse health outcomes in comparison with their heterosexual and cisgender counterparts. Positive psychology interventions (PPIs) have the potential to improve these outcomes. In this article we review 130 articles containing online positive psychology interventions and evaluate them based on effect size, length of follow-up, and sample characteristics. Based on these findings applied to the psychological mediation framework (Hatzenbuehler, 2009), we recommend the following interventions be tested in SGM samples: self-compassion, optimism, love, forgiveness, humor, and spirituality. Future research that tailors existing positive psychology interventions to the lived experiences of SGM individuals could ameliorate health disparities.

Abstract:
Continuous Curatorial Conversations is a practice-led exploration of conversation, both as a medium and as a tool for capturing supplementary histories of the curatorial. The primary question of this research project is how the medium of conversation can be explored to write supplementary histories of the curatorial which thus far have been omitted from extant publications on the subject. Three important sub questions guide this exploration. First, what is and has been the role of conversation within the curatorial? What are the possibilities and limitations within the medium of conversation? What roles do conviviality and hospitality play within the process of conversation? This thesis reflects upon a series of curated projects that explore the sp/pl/ace for curatorial conversation and also reviews a collection of one-to-one recorded conversations conducted by the author, including conversations with Alfredo Cramerotti, Hedwig Fijen, Mel Gooding, William Furlong and Sarah Lowndes. Sites of fieldwork include: the 54th Venice Biennale; Manifesta 8, The European Biennial of Contemporary Art; and Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art 2012. Through these projects and related recordings it unpicks the norms and possibilities of what and when one can record on the subject of the curatorial. The hypothesis of this study is that a great deal of curatorial activity is locked up in conversation, yet a disproportion makes it to the pages of the history of the field. Furthermore, in its clean transcribed form it misrepresents the fragility and nuance of the original exchange. The theoretical context of this research looks at Nicolas Bourriaud’s notion of Relational Aesthetics, the writing of Maria Lind and Paul O’Neill, with a focus on Audio Arts. A new methodology relating to curatorial conversation and its recording has therefore been identified as ‘critical conviviality’. The writing relating to Continuous Curatorial Conversations research takes the form of four books. The book ‘An Introduction’ comprises the PhD thesis and sits next to a bespoke online platform www.continuous-curatorial-conversations.org which hosts a selection of audio recordings collated during the research process. The books ‘Continuous’, ‘Curatorial’, and ‘Conversations’ unpack the lineage and context of Alexandra C.M. Ross’s practice and projects conducted during her research and are to be read in no strict order. The new knowledge resulting from this thesis and relating practice is the attention to the subtleties of conversation and its capture as it relates to the instigation, recording and presentation of semi-private matters in semi-public contexts.

Abstract:
Today, the main research field for the automotive industry is to find solutions for active safety. In order to perceive the surrounding environment, tracking nearby traffic objects plays an important role. Validation of the tracking performance is often done in staged traffic scenarios, where additional sensors, mounted on the vehicles, are used to obtain their true positions and velocities. The difficulty of evaluating the tracking performance complicates its development. An alternative approach studied in this thesis, is to record sequences and use non-causal algorithms, such as smoothing, instead of filtering to estimate the true target states. With this method, validation data for online, causal, target tracking algorithms can be obtained for all traffic scenarios without the need of extra sensors. We investigate how non-causal algorithms affects the target tracking performance using multiple sensors and dynamic models of different complexity. This is done to evaluate real-time methods against estimates obtained from non-causal filtering. Two different measurement units, a monocular camera and a LIDAR sensor, and two dynamic models are evaluated and compared using both causal and non-causal methods. The system is tested in two single object scenarios where ground truth is available and in three multi object scenarios without ground truth. Results from the two single object scenarios shows that tracking using only a monocular camera performs poorly since it is unable to measure the distance to objects. Here, a complementary LIDAR sensor improves the tracking performance significantly. The dynamic models are shown to have a small impact on the tracking performance, while the non-causal application gives a distinct improvement when tracking objects at large distances. Since the sequence can be reversed, the non-causal estimates are propagated from more certain states when the target is closer to the ego vehicle. For multiple object tracking, we find that correct associations between measurements and tracks are crucial for improving the tracking performance with non-causal algorithms.

Browing through World-Wide Web(WWW) has become an essential means for obtaining up-to-date information. Currently, most of the commercially-related or research oriented information on the web is in English. In order to assist people who are in need of such kinds of information yet are not particularly good at English, Online translators are introduced in which English Contents on Web page is translated into Chinese in real-time and displayed in a certain fashion. This online translation function of a browser substantially improves the efficiency for the acquisition of information. However, most of the translators on the market have poorly designed interfaces. The outlook of the Web pages after adding the translated Chinese to the original English contents is typically ill organized. Addtionally, the operating interface of the translator are often awkward. This research aims at creating, for WWW browers, a translator interface that is easy to operate and retains the integrity of the original Webpages. The necessary procedures for operating a translator are first examined and simplified. After evaluation, testing, and refinement, four designs for displaying the combined texts on Web pages are proposed.

Abstract:
The pivotal intention of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive and detailed comparison of the contemporary machine translation and the traditional translation performed by a person. The theoretical part contains two segments which are essential towards establishing the background for the thesis. Firstly, a brief historical context is presented to illustrate how and why the concept of machine translation came to exist. Its relevance, utilization and basic technological principles are presented within the confines of the technology currently available. Secondly, an overview of specific language elements which commonly present an obstacle for translators, be it those possessing human or artificial intelligence, is elaborated and briefly commented upon. The practical part contains a selected body of text which is then translated, firstly by using a specific software and secondly by the author of the thesis. These translations are compared with regard to their accuracy, with references made to the mechanics of machine translation and the source code employed to perform the translation itself, effectively combining linguistic point of view with the technological aspect of the algorithm applied in the translation software. The final part contains a conclusion and summary of obtained results and...

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the role online news translation plays in the context of media globalization. This aim was achieved through the overlapping examination of three fields of research: journalism, translation, and the Internet. Another objective was to demonstrate how the mediator between the global and the local—online news translation—fulfills its role as knowledge disseminator. A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods was used to examine Russian media outlets. A total of 310 news items and editorials were analyzed and coded revealing the linguistic, thematic, and geographical preferences of the studied media outlets. The examination of readers’ feedback demonstrated how local receivers interpret foreign cultural products. The results of the research reveal that the subjects of translated news are chosen in accordance with local readers’ interests, though the message of the original text is preserved. It was found that the majority of news comes from English language sources, and the translated foreign news hardly enhances Russian coverage due to the fact that they have the same or similar international sources of information. The results show that the process of knowledge dissemination through international media is challenged by preconceived nationalistic expectations of local audiences. The principal conclusion is that translated news, homogeneous at the stage of production, receives heterogeneous interpretations at the level of consumption.

It is well understood that collocation competence is influential in enhancing ESL/EFL students’ writing and effective communication. However, research has shown that the connection between learners’ collocation competence and textual translation writing ability remains limited. The purposes of this study were to examine: 1) EFL high school learners’ collocation knowledge (CK) and textual translation ability (TTA) before and after the treatment of collocation-based instruction; 2) the correlation between EFL high school learners’ collocation knowledge and their textual translation ability; and 3) the effects of instruction of online English collocation dictionary on EFL high school learners’ textual translation ability. This research used a quantitative design, comparing an experimental and control group. The experiment tested the influence of collocational knowledge on EFL learners’ textual translation ability. The control group (N=38) was given a general vocabulary teaching while the experimental group (N=37) was received the use of an online collocation dictionary as intervention. Results of this study showed: 1) a significant improvement was found in collocation knowledge and textual translation writing abilities following the treatment; 2) collocation knowledge and textual translation writing ability are significantly positively correlated; and 3) collocation-based instruction has a positive influence on textual translation writing ability, as well as leaner confidence in word selection and learner independence toward collocation acquisition. The results of this study provide evidence of the relationship between collocation competence and textual translation writing ability. This can benefit EFL teaching by providing writing teachers with guidance on how collocation knowledge can serve as an ideal solution to EFL learners’ problem with textual translation writing.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of online peer review on junior high students’ Chinese-to-English paragraph translation. A number of 33 eighth graders, distinguished into experimental group with online peer review activity and control group without online peer review activity, were recruited in this study. The collected data included 3 post-tests to both groups and a questionnaire with 20 five-point Likert scale items and three open-ended questions for the experimental group. Data analysis adopted t-test and questionnaire analysis. Results of this study revealed that there were significant differences between the 2 groups in grammatical tense corrections, especially in past progressive tense and future tense learning, after online reviewing peers’ Chinese-to-English paragraph translation. Meanwhile, the results also showed that eighth grade students’ attitude toward online peer review activity was positive and they thought this activity aroused their learning motivation and helped build their grammatical concepts. Junior high school English teachers are suggested to adopt online peer review activity in and after class to raise the effectiveness of their teaching.

Abstract:
Establishing online communities of practice is an important part of the knowledge translation process in the modern healthcare system, but these online communities are new entity that is inherently different from traditional communities of practice that are dependent on existing social structures. The objective of this thesis is to combine communication analysis and content analysis to delve deeper into the communications within an online community to try and determine how online communities exist, and how that information can be leveraged to improve online knowledge translation. Using a novel approach this project will map the contents of online conversations to a structured medical lexicon (MeSH), and then use the inherent relationships of that lexicon to calculate term, user and thread similarities within an online community. These similarities, combined with connection analysis results, will provide a much deeper understanding of how online communities function. The methods developed here will then be tested on two separate mailing lists, the Pediatric Pain Mailing List (PPML) and SURGINET, a mailing list of general surgeons.

In today’s increasingly globalized world, social changes are reflected in the changing demands within the translation industry. The commission of translations has shifted more towards informative texts; the easy accessibility afforded by the online medium means that information is increasingly being provided over the internet. This is the case for the example under study, which focuses on material provided online by the New Taipei City (NTPC) government’s Social Welfare Department website, and translates the findings into the larger context of improving the readability of translated text for a target readership composed of non-native English speakers, also referred to as a limited English proficiency (LEP) readership. Translation for an LEP readership, and the assessment of such translations, is currently an area of translation studies that has not received much attention. This study found that conventional methods of translation currently in use result in translations that burden readers with excessive information load and may result in translations that are almost as incomprehensible to the reader as the source text. Based on the functional theory, such translations cannot be considered to have been successful, as they have failed to achieve the intended purposes and functions of the target text. Indeed, translations that are not comprehensible to the target readership can be seen as having failed to meet even the most basic objective of language itself: communication. This forms part of the foundation of this thesis, in that the strategic use of simplification and style techniques can improve text readability, helping to render translations that communicate messages effectively to the target readership. In such cases where reader comprehension ability is low, ease of readability should be of paramount importance, so as to allow the reader to obtain information with the lowest risk of miscomprehension or inaccuracy. This gives rise to one of the most important objectives and contributions of this thesis, which is to identify the most frequently used simplification techniques, including some from research conducted on EFL/ESL (English as a Foreign/Second Language) education, that are appropriate in rendering highly readable translations for the LEP readership. This study found that the three most commonly used simplification techniques were lexical substitution, separation, and omission. These, when used in combination with other simplification techniques, were able to reduce information load through targeted changes in textual characteristics. The additional consideration of style techniques tailors the translation to the internet medium, making the text more engaging and information more accessible for the scanning habits of online readers. The overall changes in textual characteristics and presentation effected by the simplification and style techniques were able to render statistically significant improvements in the readability of translated text. Four different readability formulas, which take into account both linguistic and cognitive variables in comprehension, were used to measure these improvements. These formulas include the Flesch Reading Ease readability score, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level Formula, New Dale-Chall Formula, and the Coh-Metrix Indices. Through the use of the paired samples t-test, this study was then able to confirm that the improvements in readability across the different formulas are all statistically significant, which means that the LEP readership will find it dramatically easier to comprehend the information being transmitted. This effective communication and transmission of information allows the translated text to fulfill its intended purposes and functions, and to be considered a successful translation under the study's theoretical framework.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis focuses on machine translation (MT), which has been studied for a relatively long time in linguistics (and later also in translation studies) and which in recent years is at the forefront of the broader public as well. This thesis aims to explore the quality of machine translation outputs and the way it changes over time. The theoretical part first deals with the machine translation in general, namely basic definitions, brief history and approaches to machine translation, then describes online machine translation systems and evaluation methods. Finally, this part provides a methodological model for the empirical part. Using a set of texts translated with MT, the empirical part seeks to check how online machine translation systems deal with translation of different text-types and whether there is improvement of the quality of MT outputs over time. In order to do so, an analysis of text-type, semantics, lexicology, stylistics and pragmatics is carried out as well as a rating of the general applicability of the translation. The final part of this thesis compares and concludes the results of the analysis. With regard to this comparation, conclusions are made and general tendencies stated that have emerged from the empirical part of the thesis.

This report describes the knowledge acquired during the curriculum internship at SMARTIDIOM, as part of the Masters in Translation. The opportunity that I had to work on the localization of projects into European Portuguese allowed me to become more aware of some of the particularities of this topic, namely the importance that large companies worldwide attribute to the adequate localization of their products in order to win the trust of their target public and increase sales. From the experience I acquired during the curricular internship, I can affirm that the localization of online support articles requires translation skills that far exceed the simple knowledge of languages and the technical terminology used, since it also requires an excellent knowledge of the target culture. In this report, I will give a general description of the internship at SMARTIDIOM and discuss the issues that I considered most interesting regarding technical translation and localization. Finally I will present the style guides used to localize the online support articles and analyze the phrases that I considered more relevant given the approach adopted in this report.

At present, most research of machine translation is based on mathematics or statistics. They try to find a better approach to source language, in order to improve the quality of translation. In contrary, the subject matter in this research is focused on the interaction between source language and translation machine. This thesis is based on cognitive linguistics, aiming to find a better approach to translation machine. And making nowadays translation technology can translate specific sentence pattern without modifying a lot of computer program. In Chen Zhong (2006)’s opinion, there is a “boundary” between the objective world, cognitive world and linguistic system. The opinion about “boundary” and “cognition” become this study’s basis, and was applied to review the relation between online translation service and Japanese news headlines. The corpus (Japanese news headlines) which contain case particle “NI” came from The Nikkei Financial Daily. In the process of testing corpus from The Nikkei Financial Daily by the online translation service, some practicable translation rules (method for transforming source language structure) are concluded. The method for transforming source language structure, not only make case particle “NI” functional in sentence, but also be recognized by nowadays translation technology. Six rules for transforming source language structure are concluded in this research. Abstract Given the widespread usage of 3C products, audiences tend to read online newspapers that deliver the latest news on a variety of issues. Therefore, the headline plays a key role in mobilizing readers’ interest, and so the importance of its translation should be emphasized. In response, this study explores whether the translation strategies used on The New York Times website differ between hard and soft news headlines, with the data collected divided in this way, revealing 100 soft news headlines and 100 hard news headlines. Nine translation strategies suggested by Dr. Liao(2014) in the book,《新聞英文閱讀與翻譯技巧》(Journalistic English: Reading and translating) are then used to examine these headlines and most of them have been explored in this research. The data are also analyzed based on Venuti’s concepts of foreignization and domestication, with the results indicating a preference for the latter in news headline translations. Moreover, it can be seen that free translation is commonly used in soft news headlines rather than in hard news headlines. In order to examine the quality of English-to-Chinese headlines translation, we suggest that future research pay attention to both the entire body of the news and headlines.
