Abstract:
As an introduction, the study discusses the state of applied linguistics and applied onomastics, their connections with each other, and other disciplines. First, the concept of applied onomastics is approached from the perspective of applied linguistics and onomastic studies. It then examines the appearance and presence of applied onomastics in the scientific arena and the literature, the framework and forums of the discipline in Hungary, including the conference series Applied Onomastics (formerly: Onomastics and Terminology) held annually since 2012. Next, the study emphasizes the possible connections of selected onomastic phenomena and problems and then describes the characteristic subjects of applied onomastics, offering examples of recent Hungarian results. Questions touched upon include: name planning, name policies, names and officiality; translation of proper names; names and lexicography; names and orthography; onomastics in education; dissemination of onomastic knowledge; onomastics and informatics; onomastics and terminology; onomastics and marketing, branding.

Abstract:
The article describes the scope of onomastic research outlined at the XXI International Scientific Conference “Onomastics of the Volga Region”, which took place on October 3-5, 2023 at Ryazan State University named after S.A. Yesenin. At plenary and panel sessions, reports were heard and discussed on the theoretical and methodological aspects of onomastics, modern problems of anthroponymy and ethnonymy, toponymy and microtoponymy; the study of urban onomastic space, literary and folklore onomastics, as well as onomastic periphery (studies of zoonyms, theonyms and onomastic units of other categories). For the first time, separate thematic blocks were composed of reports examining the possibilities of using onomastic material (in particular, local history) at school and university, as well as the peculiarities of the functioning of onyms as parts of proverbs. As a result of the conference, priority areas of onomastics of the 21st century were revealed, controversial issues and research prospects were identified.

Abstract:
The article describes the range of onomastic research presented at the XVIII International scientific conference "Onomastics of the Volga region". This conference was held on September 9-10, 2020 in the Kostroma city on the basis of Kostroma State University. For more than fifty years, it has united onomastics researchers from Russia and countries of the near and far abroad. Reports on the theory and methods of onomastic research, various aspects of the study of various categories of proper names, sources of onomastic research, and onomastic periphery were delivered and discussed at the plenary and breakout sessions of the conference. For the first time, sacred onomastics was included in the range of issues discussed. The organizing committee and the conference participants noted the difficult conditions of the infection pandemic of COVID-19 in which the conference was held, however, the fact that the annual meeting of onomastics researchers took place suggests that onomastics, the science of man and for man, is a truly demanded and relevant branch of modern linguistics.

Abstract:
The article describes the range of onomastic studies identified at the XX International Scientific Conference "Onomastics of the Volga Region", which took place October 5‒7, 2022 at the Kalmyk State University named after B.B. Gorodovikov with the assistance of the Russian Society of Teachers of the Russian Language and Literature. At the plenary and breakout sessions, reports were heard and discussed on the consideration of the theoretical and methodological aspects of onomastics (including the use of onomastic material in the educational process), modern problems of anthroponymy and ethnonymy, toponymy and microtoponymy; the study of urban onomastic space, literary and folklore onomastics, as well as onomastic periphery and appellative-onomastic borderland. For the first time, individual thematic blocks made reports that dealt with the issues of zoonymy, microtoponymy, theonymy and ethnonymy. Abstract:
The article characterizes the scientific achievements of the famous Ukrainian linguist I. M. Zheliezniak (April 25, 1932 — June 24, 2020) in various areas of national onomastics — anthroponymics, oikonymics, hydronymics, microtoponymics. The focus is on the multifaceted interests of the scientist: structural and semantic features of Old Slavic composite names, the origin of Ukrainian surnames, the etymology of Ukrainian and non-Slavic potamonyms, oiko nyms, oronyms, the formation of the Kyiv microtoponymicon, Ukrainian-non-Slavic (Ukrainian-South Slavic) hydronyms parallels, the problem of Slavic ethnogenesis through the prism of pro per names. The works of Iryna Mykhailivna, important for domestic onomastics, from various onomastics branches are described. Her organizational activities are outlined, in particular, as the head (1985—2002) of the first group of onomastics within the dialectology and onomastics sector of the Potebnia Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and later the Department of Onomastics within the Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Iryna Mykhailivna was the inspirer and organizer of onomastic seminars at the Potebnia Institute of Linguistics of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR and the Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, she was a scientific editor of collections of scientific works, known not only in Ukraine, but also abroad, and the author of onomastic articles in three editions of the Ukrainian language encyclopedia. The article emphasizes the importance of the scientific ideas of I. M. Zheliezniak for modern and future scientists-onomastics. The scientist’s contribution to the formation of Ukrainian onomastic science is updated. Keywords: anthroponyms, hydronyms, onomastics, onomastic studies, I. M. Zheliezniak

Abstract:
This article analyses the basic stages of onomastic studies development at the Institute of the Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine since the 1950s till the present within the Potebnia Institute of Linguistics. The paper focuses on Institute’s main directions and ideas, e.g., etymological research in hydronymics, anthroponimics, oikonimics, and ethno- nimics based on the traditions of comparative-historical approach. It also reveals important issues of contemporary studies as follows: 1) the etymology of proper nouns, i.e., personal, geographical and ethnic names, with respect to the systematic and historical approaches; 2) lexicographic studies on anthroponyms, hydronyms, and oikonyms; analysis of modern onimicon of Ukraine in accordance with current spelling norms of Standard Ukrainian; 3) systematization of the Ukrainian onomastic research and indexes. The achievements of the Ukrainian onomastics are reinterpreted through the lenses of numerous monographs, scientific collections, and historical and etymological dictionaries of hydronyms and oikonyms. A periodical Study of Onomastics and Etymology is viewed as a successful case of cooperation with the Ukrainian Language Insti-tute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and regional onomastic centers to share the outcome of national onomastic research outside Ukraine. The article outlines main goals that the Ukrainian academic onomastics must achieve, such as the following: 1) to develop Ukrainian onomastic science on the basis of objective data analysis, e.g., from the characteristics of a single fact to the concept formulation; 2) to expand the empirical basis of onomastic research; 3) to promote outcomes of onomastic studies among students of national Ukrainian universities. Keywords: onomastics, onomastic card index, onomastic studies, traditions of comparative-historical linguistics, onomastics group in the Department of History of the Ukrainian Language and the Institute of the Ukrainian language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Abstract:
Kazakh onomastics is a big sphereof linguistic science, which includes numerous lexical units and onyms, such as: anthroponyms, toponyms, hydronyms, and etc. The main principles of teaching onomastics include not only the lexical and structural features of the language, but also the importance of teaching the language history and culture through onomastic vocabulary. Today, the consideration of the psychological and pedagogical foundations of Kazakh language onomastics teaching depends on the theoretical, developmental and educational values of names in teaching the Kazakh language. The creation and formation of the names of onomastic objects in our country is one of the most important issues not only in learning thei names, but also in the language vocabulary development. In this direction, the main purpose of the article is to determine the ways of developing the students’ language skills using effective linguistic methods of teaching the Kazakh language onomastics. The process of teaching Kazakh onomastics in higher education was chosen as an object of the study. The goal of teaching the Kazakh language onomastics as a separate subject in higher education arose from the need to create new directions in the educational system. The article proves the effectiveness of using complex methods in teaching the Kazakh language onomastics as a special subject. The experiment was carried out in accordance with the educational program for students of philology speciality on the elective subject “Onomastics and country studies”. The results of experimental work on the development of students’ language skills on using new approaches in teaching Kazakh language onomastics were presented. The results of the research can be used in the process of training future teachers in the field of onomastics at universities.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the theoretical problems of studying proprial vocabulary, the methodology of onomastics, which involves the search and formulation of its fundamental general theoretical processes. Theorization of the subject makes it possible not only to determine its essence, but also to build the content space of research in general. The topicality of the topic is related to the importance of further development of the theoretical provisions of onomastics and the need to analyze the state of modern developments. The following methods were used for the research: linguistic observation and description of linguistic phenomena — to find out the status of the problem; comparison, analysis, synthesis — to clarify the essence and content of aspects of onomastic research. It is noted that the approach to the analysis of onims is always multifaceted, regardless of the classical or innovative view of them in a theoretical and practical way. An analysis of the theories and methods of onomastic research at the current stage has been carried out. An approximate circle of goals and tasks set by researchers of theoretical onomastics is outlined. A system of priorities to be implemented has been determined, namely: application of the achievements of the onymic conceptology; theoretical justification of linguistic and cultural onomastics, study of the effects of speech activity. The need to generalize theoretical and practical research in the field of onomastics is substantiated; describe modern methods and techniques of onomastic research. The article notes that the onymic language area is an open system that is constantly updated. It is emphasized that theoretical onomastics is an important direction of research and one of the main factors that determines the quality of the state and the basis of research searches. The greatest effect is given by the involvement in onomastic research of the methods and achievements of related sciences.

Abstract:
A proper name is a vocabulary element of a particular language which also belongs to a respective onymic subsystem, thereby acquiring a binary character. Proper names are formed (as a secondary plan of a language) with the background of appellative vocabulary. However, in their formation and use in communication, not only are the rules of the appellative language code applied but also the rules specific to proper names. Two opposing but interrelated tendencies are typical of the position of proper names – a continuous interaction of proper names with other vocabulary and the whole language system and, simultaneously, a continuous polarisation of the category of proper names in relation to appellatives. The interaction of proper names with other vocabulary relates to the ongoing processes of onymisation (appellative % proprium) and apellativisation (proprium % appellative) with the openness of onymy (the social, historical, cultural as well as the political dimensions of proper names present a wide range of possibilities for, e. g. the adoption of exonyms) but, above all, it relates to the social needs of ordinary communication. The polarisation of proper names in relation to appellatives is, hence, conditioned by the special character of onymic nomination. From this binary interrelationship of proper names follows the binary status of the category nomen proprium, i. e. linguistic status and onomastic status. In the analysis of proper names and from the methodological standpoint in onomastics, I consider this to be fundamental. That is why, after the older characterisation of onomastics, I have extended the definition of the linguistic status of proper names as defined by Kuryłowicz (La position linguistique du nom propre, 1956) to linguistic and onomastic status (Blanár 1976, 1977 ). These terms will be discussed later.

Sedulius sive Ilarleh. Bynames (cognomina) in the early medieval memorial tradition. – More than 2.000 personal names occurring in the libri vitae of Reichenau (D), St. Gall (CH) and Brescia (I) and also in the early documents of St. Gall are listed in this essay. These names are cognomina because of the significant appellative meaning in Old and Middle High German times. They are divided in 10 groups: (1.) ethnic bynames (type: Hesso, Latinus), (2.) bynames given at birth (type: Willicomo, Gotedanc) (3.) bynames designating relationship (type: Fater, Muatir), (4.) bynames from animals (type: Fisc, Swein), (5.) bynames from plants (type: Palma, Pluoma), (6.) bynames from professions (type: Choufman, Chnehto), (7.) religious bynames (type: Kotechind, Seraphim), (8.) bynames based on physical attributes (type: Barbatus, Panzleip), (9.) bynames indicating intellectual qualities (type: Chusc, Heitar), (10.) negative bynames (type: Unarg, Untol). These appellations widen the vocabulary of Old High German.

However, the historical research criticized their lack of explanatory power for the actual personality of the signified. The paper, therefore, proposes to turn our gaze away from the conformity of the epithets with the character and deeds of historical figures on the surnamegiving and -using practices including the motives of the authors and users. Rare personal names in the Early Middle Ages. – Numerous Germanic personal names can only be evidenced a few times, some of them no more than once. The historical and geographic frames of reference for their respective classification as ‘rare’ are mainly the known inventory of Germanic names from the 4th until approximately the end of the 8th century within the Frankish territories east of the Rhine river as well as Gallo- and Italoromania. Obviously, there are various reasons for classifying a personal name as rare. The form of its tradition – perhaps accidentally and with great regional differences – certainly plays a role; but there is also a variety of linguistic and onomastic phenomena that could have greatly influenced the frequency of Germanic anthroponyms. They are criteria of both selection and limitation as well as new creativity. This article focuses on important features and mechanisms of name-giving, particularly regarding their potential for enabling names to remain rare.

Abstract:
The Merovingian Practice of Naming after Relatives: Family Traditions and Politics. – The name-giving habits in the Early Middle Ages are often connected with the traditions of a kin group. But the Merovingian example shows the importance of politics: During the course of its existence the Merovingian Frankish Kingdom was often separated into Teilreiche. Their kings were closely related which led to a claim to succeed one another. This is the context of the beginning of the Merovingian naming after relatives. Giving a name which was a popular part of the tradition of another Teilreich was a means to express one’s political claim on said kingdom. It is interesting that Clothar I – the weakest king of his generation – used this instrument most frequently. As did his son Chilperic I who at first also was at a disadvantage compared to his half-brothers. Chilperich even used the name Merowech which shows his ambition to rule the Gesamtreich, at least around Clothar’s I death in 561. Naming after a direct ancestor (especially after the grandfather) was comparatively seldom. Maybe because naming generally did not serve as stabilisation of a family tradition (as in later centuries) but current political concerns. In the 7th century the naming after direct ancestors or relatives prevailed.

Basic Research on the Relation between Toponymy and Surnames from the Areal Point of View. – The article thoroughly reviews vol. IV of the high-profile German Atlas of Family Names covering present-day anthroponyms after origin (place names etc.) or habitation (field-names and the like). Its focused approach to various methodical problems the authors were faced with permits us to recognize their theoretical performance and their etymological achievements as well. The effectively used principle to go from the general to the particular, which enables them to overcome the difficulties of delimiting both classes of names, to form subcategories, and to examine typological and singular phenomena – not to forget the wealth of conclusive maps –, is especially pointed out. In view of the extensive and sophisticated problems that had to be tackled some additional remarks and supplements on the part of the reviewer can in no account depreciate the authors’ further substantial contribution to anthroponomastics.

Abstract:
The monograph introduces readers not just into a complex, but into an exceptionally complicated history of international communication through a very simple and understandable entrance, which is torn off by the science of onomastics, which studies proper names. This knowledge, concerning the names of those personalities who have left their mark in the history of international relations, becomes a kind of anthroponymic guide to international relations. Toponymy, which explains the names of geographical objects, is the part of geopolitics that will help to identify the edges of agreement and conflict. Since not only things, phenomena, processes have their own names, but also symbols, including those that permeate the space of international interaction, the state of the world, its stability and security may depend on the accuracy of the use of such names. It is addressed to specialists in the field of geopolitics, history, sociology, and cultural studies. A narrative about the history and peculiarities of modern international relations, in which the main facts are taken from the world of proper names, will be interesting to a wide range of readers.

Abstract:
Onomastics (Greek onomastics - the art of naming) is a branch of linguistics that studies various nouns, the history of their appearance and change, as well as a collection of all nouns. In some studies, the term "Onomastics" is also used in the meaning of anthroponymy. Onomastics is aimed at identifying and studying non-existent onomastic systems. Onomastics consists of the following sections according to the categories of the objects that received the names: anthroponymics - names of people; toponymy - popular names of geographical objects; theonymics - the names of gods, goddesses, religious-mythical figures and beings according to various religious ideas; zoonymics - (conditional) nouns given to animals; phytonymics - names related to the world of plants, cosmonymics - the names of space regions, galaxies, constellations and others that are spread in scientific communication and internationally; astronomy - studies the names of individual astronomical bodies (planets and stars). Apart from the above, onomastics has several branches. Onomastics includes real names (names of previously existing objects) and phonemes (names of imaginary objects).

Abstract:
This paper aims to retrace the most significant phases in the formation of modern Argentine onomastics, as a result of the construction of national identity, a process which assimilates and recomposes the variety of the original ethnic components. A diachronic reading of the data, starting from the baptismal registers of a rural community north of Córdoba, will allow for an evaluation of the onomastic choices, indicating the contours of the progressive reworking of the identity profile of Italian migrants, modified by means of interlinguistic and intercultural contacts.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes medieval onomastics in the Romanian historical province of Transylvania (11th–14th centuries), a multicultural area, corresponding to the ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity of the population. The different ethnic communities are ruled by a unique administrative authority, but the multicultural environment exercises a major influence on the personal names of each ethnic group by distinguishing the names according to several aspects: ethnic criteria, the manifestation of unilateral or reciprocal onomastic influences, the adaptation of borrowed names to the specificity of each language and the alteration of the popular names in use in written variants, established as officially Latinized forms.

Abstract:
This study is aimed at interpreting names and naming in relation to the founders of Christianity and to investigate theological figures who are a part of the cultural-spiritual heritage of the Primordial Church, by carrying out a biographical incursion into their lives. The saints described in this paper built Christianity by means of perfect synergy between fact and word, as their names have continued to exist across the centuries. In the present paper, we propose an inventory of some of the most important names of all time and their analysis from the perspective of onomastics. Thus, Eastern and Western Christianity meet through the common saints who act as patrons of their spirituality, testifying over the centuries to the fact that while the present may divide us, the past unites us. Christian rhetoricians enrich the word and the Church through their life and work, as vehicles through which creative grace is manifested. The corpus was taken from specialized studies, such as dictionaries of theology, biographies of saints, onomastic dictionaries. Methodologically, the paper employs precepts from the following fields: onomastics, theology, anthroponymy, cultural anthropology, the history of churches, rhetoric.

Abstract:
This article discusses the major trends in scholarship about linguistic onomastic processes of construing names, the semantic standing of proper names, and the probable consequences names have on readers. The aim of this paper is to emphasize the relevance and potential of literary onomastics, the employment and role of names in literary works, and naming aspects that are instrumental in the complexity and appeal of the fiction. As examples, we examine a new research in Names from the Journal of Onomastics about what makes the proper names of Tolkien’s Middle-Earth so fitting.

Abstract:
On the level of language, multiculturalism is manifested in various and numerous ways: from proper names and different names for concepts, to linguistic creations/word collocations with universal meaning. Speakers often use fixed word structures that contain proper names (Romanian coinages or borrowings from other languages) as discursive embellishment or due to the multiple meanings that these linguistic creations gain in different communicative contexts.

Abstract:
The names of the kings of the Fifth Dynasty may serve as a prototypical example for the re-evaluation of Manetho’s king-list: Userkaf, Sahure, Neferirkare, Shepseskare, Reneferef, Nirewoser, Djedkare-Isesi and Unas are all recorded in the king-list of Manetho as transmitted by Sextus Julius Africanus according to the Ecloga chronographiae of George Syncellus. Although the names as preserved have obviously suffered on a long way of copying manuscripts over and over again, a closer look at the Greek transcriptions reveals the high quality and the still unbroken relevance of Manetho’s Aegyptiaca for modern Egyptological scholarship, when dealing with chronology, onomastics and linguistics. As will be shown, there is a line, identifiable with variable degrees of difficultly but finally clearly discernible, which leads all the way down from the Old Kingdom to Manetho’s Aegyptiaca.

Book of the Dead spell 23 aimed to allow the deceased to recover the use of his mouth: therefore, the deceased invokes, among other deities, the “god of the city” as his personal god. However, some copies of the Book of the Dead from the 26th dynasty onwards replace or add to this expression the name of the god Amon. All these papyri clearly or supposedly come from Thebes based on prosopographical and onomastic criteria. Abstract:
Peculiarities of translating romance novels are considered in the article. Examples from the novel by Kristan Higgins “Too good to be true” are given in order corresponding to their manifestation in the book. Special attention is given to the translation of realities. The main translation techniques used are transliteration and transcription, calquing, and combinations (concerning onomastic realities), descriptive translation and approximation (concerning everyday realities and associations). Besides, it is mentioned, that gender dimension is extremely pragmatically valid in the context of other stylistic and grammatical aspects of the text. The authors make a conclusion of dynamic changes in speech stereotypes towards blurring gender lines between masculine and feminine speech behavior. It is important to consider this fact when translating romance novels.

Full text
Abstract:
The subject of this article is a wooden stela (AAd6) kept in the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen. By iconographical and typological criteria, this object is datable to the 22nd Dynasty and probably comes from the Theban area. The stela displays several particularities, among others, one of the longest genealogies preserved on this object type. Alongside a careful investigation of the different iconographical elements and a new translation of the text, this contribution looks into the onomastic and the prosopographical material, examining different titles such as “ḥnk-nw.w-priest in southern Heliopolis” or “wab-priest in chief of the estate of Mut, the great one, the mistress of Isheru.” This study not only reconstitutes the family tree but also connects this object with three others, that are datable to a timeframe from the 21st Dynasty to the beginning of the 26th Dynasty. An excursus focusing on the painting sequence of the text and depictions contributes to a better understanding of the creation of wooden stelae in the Third intermediate Period.
