Abstract:
As a result of our research, English onomastics shows that there are close associative links between language and culture, historical reality, and as a result, metaphorical shades and stylistic connotations appear in the semantics of onomastic units. Like other metaphorical meanings, onomastic connotations have been filtered through the English worldview, folklore, legends, and national psychology, and have become means of stylistic expression. Stylistic onomastics covers the expressive, satirical, humorous features of artistic style. The ethnic character of the people speaking this language, as well as the objective features of toponyms have a certain role in the emergence of stylistic nuances.

Onomastic units mean a special number. This field is one of the focus areas of research in modern Azerbaijani linguistics. Special attention is paid to the development of onomastic units in the literary language of our great poet S.Vurgun, who played an exceptional role in the enrichment of the Azerbaijani language. Each of the onomastic units was skillfully used in the work of S.Vurgun. Research shows that our artists used the appellation of words when naming images. This is clearly reflected in the literary language of S.Vurgun. In S.Vurgun's poem, the names are arranged according to the descriptive situation of the event. Abstract:
Most studies of Malay names to date have been based on ethnographic and literary sources. This article presents a new dataset for Malay onomastics, namely Islamic seals from Southeast Asia, inscribed in Arabic script and dating from the late 16th to early 20th century, over half of which bear a personal name. A high proportion of these seals are of sovereigns, and Malay seals are thus an exceptionally valuable primary source for regnal names. Yet while in Malay texts and chronicles the use of personal names is generally avoided in favour of kinship terms, relational names, titles and descriptive epithets, Malay seals are almost invariably inscribed with standard Arabic-Islamic personal names. This feature should be interpreted in the context of the image of self which the sealholder wished to project to the outside world, in which his or her Islamic identity, and membership of the universal ummah, was of prime importance. Keywords: Malay names, onomastic, Malay seals, regnal names, Islamic names Abstrak Kebanyakan kajian tentang nama Melayu setakat ini berdasarkan sumber daripada bidang etnografi atau bidang persuratan.

Abstract:
One of the major and the most widespread fields of onomastics is anthroponymy. This term is used in linguistics in the meaning of “study of personal names”. As all the onomastic terms antropononyms describe main idea of the written work, main plot and sequence of events. Surely, when choosing an antroponym, writer focuses on current situation and events “because language belongs to the nation”. Therefore, it is very natural that language is closely related to nation’s history.

Why did the German author Jean Paul Richter (1763 ‒1825) choose the isle of Isola Bella in Lago Maggiore as the locale for the first chapters of his novel Titan? He had never been to Italy and had known this place only from travel guides and etchings. Moreover, this completely artificially modelled island, a terraced garden in the Italian style, could not suit his taste which clearly tended to the more recent English style of gardening. In this article the point is made that he chose the place for its name which contains the personal name Isabella. To prove this the psychoanalytical method as developed by Freud and Lacan is employed, starting from the assumption that the poet’s choice of his names is largely dominated by subconscious motives.

Abstract:
The documentation of names in large printed collections (in form of highly structured articles including the name's history, its etymology and variation etc.) has always been an important task of onomastic research. This paper presents a new, more effective way of publishing in onomastics, consisting of a combination of a database (AskSam 5) and a typesetting system (LaTeX). The input of the typesetting system is generated by an output program of the database. Some advantages of this solution are discussed: the independence of the data from the layout in the printed book, which allows to change the layout whenever needed (e.g. when combining different projects), and a higher data security by using basic ASCII code in the database combined with a markup language for professional typesetting. All corrections are made in the database. This keeps the database in accordance with the correct, finally printed text and opens new perspectives in using the data for additional projects, e.g. for indexes or other forms of publication (e.g. popular or short versions). All steps of this new approach are presented: the required features of the database, how to produce the printfile, and how to make the corrections. A detailed discussion of the advantages and the resulting savings of money and time aims to encourage the readers to follow our solution.

Rare personal names in the Early Middle Ages. – Numerous Germanic personal names can only be evidenced a few times, some of them no more than once. The historical and geographic frames of reference for their respective classification as ‘rare’ are mainly the known inventory of Germanic names from the 4th until approximately the end of the 8th century within the Frankish territories east of the Rhine river as well as Gallo- and Italoromania. Obviously, there are various reasons for classifying a personal name as rare. The form of its tradition – perhaps accidentally and with great regional differences – certainly plays a role; but there is also a variety of linguistic and onomastic phenomena that could have greatly influenced the frequency of Germanic anthroponyms. They are criteria of both selection and limitation as well as new creativity. This article focuses on important features and mechanisms of name-giving, particularly regarding their potential for enabling names to remain rare.

Basic Research on the Relation between Toponymy and Surnames from the Areal Point of View. – The article thoroughly reviews vol. IV of the high-profile German Atlas of Family Names covering present-day anthroponyms after origin (place names etc.) or habitation (field-names and the like). Its focused approach to various methodical problems the authors were faced with permits us to recognize their theoretical performance and their etymological achievements as well. The effectively used principle to go from the general to the particular, which enables them to overcome the difficulties of delimiting both classes of names, to form subcategories, and to examine typological and singular phenomena – not to forget the wealth of conclusive maps –, is especially pointed out. In view of the extensive and sophisticated problems that had to be tackled some additional remarks and supplements on the part of the reviewer can in no account depreciate the authors’ further substantial contribution to anthroponomastics.

The Lingual Situation in the Area of Leipzig Around 1000 AD. – For the first time a medieval area of Central Germany is under focus for the time after its integration into the German political and lingual domain. Around 1000 AD the area along the rivers Elster, Parthe and Pleiße was mainly settled by Slavs. It belonged to the Slavonic region Chutici. In the tenth century the Christianization of the area took place. From 968 awards it belonged to the diocese of Merseburg within the archdiocese Magdeburg. With the help of documents and narrative sources the linguistic data is analyzed to answer the question of the linguistic predominance there around 1000 AD. The resulting conclusions are relevant for the complete Central German region around the year 1000.

Abstract:
On the historical source value of toponyms. Toponyms as a source for the reconstruction of ethnic relations. – Besides constituting a crucial source material for linguistic history and onomastic research, toponyms occurring in historical sources (medieval charters) can be exploited also for the (history-related) purposes of other fields of research such as historiography (settlement and demographic history in particular), historic geography, ethnography, etc. When trying to map the ethnic composition of earlier times, representatives of historiography like to rely on data extracted on the basis of different layers of the origins of toponyms. However, it needs to be emphasized that such examinations presuppose special circumspection in order to avoid typical stumbling blocks exactly in the field of ethnic reconstruction whose possibilities I want to highlight here. My paper explores the question if toponyms occurring in early Hungarian linguistic monuments could be used for ethnic identification, and if this is the case, how we can draw conclusions related to questions of ethnicity based on linguistic results. In this respect we also need to examine the criteria based on which toponymic data appearing in charters can be linked to certain (Hungarian, German, Turkish or any of the Slavic) languages. Onomastic correlations, information on the evolution of names as well as certain phonetic changes may provide us with some clues in the definition of such links<br>Vom historischen Quellenwert der Toponyme.

Abstract:
The Merovingian Practice of Naming after Relatives: Family Traditions and Politics. – The name-giving habits in the Early Middle Ages are often connected with the traditions of a kin group. But the Merovingian example shows the importance of politics: During the course of its existence the Merovingian Frankish Kingdom was often separated into Teilreiche. Their kings were closely related which led to a claim to succeed one another. This is the context of the beginning of the Merovingian naming after relatives. Giving a name which was a popular part of the tradition of another Teilreich was a means to express one’s political claim on said kingdom. It is interesting that Clothar I – the weakest king of his generation – used this instrument most frequently. As did his son Chilperic I who at first also was at a disadvantage compared to his half-brothers. Chilperich even used the name Merowech which shows his ambition to rule the Gesamtreich, at least around Clothar’s I death in 561. Naming after a direct ancestor (especially after the grandfather) was comparatively seldom. Maybe because naming generally did not serve as stabilisation of a family tradition (as in later centuries) but current political concerns. In the 7th century the naming after direct ancestors or relatives prevailed.

Abstract:
This article discusses the major trends in scholarship about linguistic onomastic processes of construing names, the semantic standing of proper names, and the probable consequences names have on readers. The aim of this paper is to emphasize the relevance and potential of literary onomastics, the employment and role of names in literary works, and naming aspects that are instrumental in the complexity and appeal of the fiction. As examples, we examine a new research in Names from the Journal of Onomastics about what makes the proper names of Tolkien’s Middle-Earth so fitting.

Gundacker, Roman. The Names of the Kings of the Fifth Dynasty According to Manetho. Verlag der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1553/erc_stg_757951_r._gundacker_the_names_of_the_kings_of_the_fifth_dynasty.

Abstract:
The names of the kings of the Fifth Dynasty may serve as a prototypical example for the re-evaluation of Manetho’s king-list: Userkaf, Sahure, Neferirkare, Shepseskare, Reneferef, Nirewoser, Djedkare-Isesi and Unas are all recorded in the king-list of Manetho as transmitted by Sextus Julius Africanus according to the Ecloga chronographiae of George Syncellus. Although the names as preserved have obviously suffered on a long way of copying manuscripts over and over again, a closer look at the Greek transcriptions reveals the high quality and the still unbroken relevance of Manetho’s Aegyptiaca for modern Egyptological scholarship, when dealing with chronology, onomastics and linguistics. As will be shown, there is a line, identifiable with variable degrees of difficultly but finally clearly discernible, which leads all the way down from the Old Kingdom to Manetho’s Aegyptiaca.
