Abstract:
This article provides an overview of computer based catalogue systems designed for use by library clients, seeing present day ‘discovery systems’ on the same trajectory as the older ‘online public access catalogues’ (OPACs) which they are gradually replacing, both in technical development and their approach to client use scenarios. It traces the history of the OPAC/discovery system from its origins in the library automation of the 1960s through to the present and discusses the main technical standards which have formed its development. The article goes on to consider questions relating to the

Abstract:
The behavior of academic library users has drastically changed in recent years. Internet search engines have become the preferred tool over the library online public access catalog (OPAC) for finding information. Libraries are losing ground to online search engines. In this paper, two aspects of OPAC use are studied: (1) the current OPAC interface and searching capabilities, and (2) the OPAC bibliographic display. The purpose of the study is to find answers to the following questions: Why is the current OPAC ineffective? What can libraries and librarians do to deliver an OPAC that is as good a

This paper uses a case study approach to evaluate the usability of the OPAC system in the Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA), which is a representative and important archive of its type. Abstract:
Many time-resolved spectroscopy techniques require two broadly and independently tunable, synchronised light pulses. Recent advances in short pulse laser technology and non-linear crystal materials have lead to rapid development of optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) and travelling wave optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs) capable of meeting these requirements. Our aim was to develop a multi-kilohertz repetition rate OPA system for femtosecond/picosecond, pump and probe time-resolved absorption and resonance Raman spectroscopies. We believe this work reports, for the first time, on synchrono

Abstract:
Optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs) have been used to extend the wavelength range available from amplified Ti:sapphire lasers [1,2]. These systems typically produce 100 fsec pulses throughout the visible and near infrared. Recently, there has been much interest in generating wavelengths beyond 3 μm, often by means of difference frequency mixing [3]. Direct generation of pulses from an OPA however, offers the potential for higher energy. We report, for the first time, generation of 3 to 5 μm pulses directly from a potassium niobate (KNbO3) OPA pumped by an amplified Ti:sapphire laser [4].

Abstract:
In optical phase conjugation (OPC) systems, the third-order dispersion (TOD) of optical fibers and the nonlinear resonance at well-defined signal sideband frequencies called sideband instability (SI) mainly limit the transmission performance. We present for the first time a complete theoretical analysis of sideband instability (SI) that occurs when two kinds of fibers with different characteristics are concatenated to form a dispersion-managed fiber link. We find that the magnitude of the SI gain reduces with the increase in strength of dispersion management. Next, we focus on the fiber link u

Abstract:
Schools and school systems are experiencing an instructional support gap that results in limited opportunities for educators to analyze, reflect on and improve research-based practices for ELLs so that outcomes for culturally and linguistically diverse students can change. To address this need, an inter-disciplinary research team from the Center for Equity for English Learners, comprised of educational leaders, teachers, researchers, and content experts developed a classroom observational instrument—the Observation Protocol for Academic Literacies (OPAL). This case study provides exploratory research into the personal journeys of forced recruits into Boko Haram, to examine how they entered the organization, the conditions they experienced in camps and settlements, their exits from the group, their subsequent experiences in state hands, and their perspectives about future reintegration. These themes are particularly pertinent given the mass disengagements from Boko Haram in spring 2022, and the extent to which federal and state systems lack the capacity to absorb and handle the large numbers involved. We study four methods: the zero-dispersion wavelength (ZDWL) transmission, the dispersion management, the optical soliton transmission, and the midway optical phase conjugation (OPC), for upgrading installed electronic repeater-based optical fiber transmission system to optically amplified system. We derive the optimum design rules for each scheme to achieve the maximum transmission data rate. The 1,318-km-long Thailand-Malaysia (T-M) submarine fiber-optic transmission system is used as the system model.
