Abstract:
Apresentamos um estudo de sistemas fotométricos no infravermelho próximo, com especial atenção ao sistema fotométrico da Câmara Infravermelho (CamIV) do PRONEX/IAG- USP. Utilizamos as melhores estimativas das características do sítio do Observatório do Pico dos Dias, no Laboratório Nacional de Astrofísica, e os dados instrumentais provenientes dos fabricantes do detector e dos conjuntos de filtros, para descrever e caracterizar quantitativamente o sistema fotométrico da CamIV por meio da fotometria sintética. Apresentamos exemplos de desempenho do uso da câmara, tanto com o conjunto de filtros de banda larga efetuando a fotometria J e H de NGC 6809 e NGC 6751, quanto com os de banda estreita, com a fotometria de estrelas padrão. Para este último conjunto de filtros apresentamos um método de correlação entre o valor da magnitude na banda larga K e o valor da magnitude em banda estreita. Esta dissertação está assim organizada: na Introdução descrevemos como caracterizar um sistema fotométrico, especialmente no infravermelho próximo. No capítulo dois apresentamos uma descrição da câmara propriamente dita, bem como dos seus principais componentes ópticos. No capítulo três descrevemos o método da fotometria sintética e suas possíveis aplicações. O capítulo quatro destina-se a mostrar o comportamento da CamIV em uso no modo câmara direto, tanto com o conjunto de filtros largos, quanto os estreitos e apresentar o estudo da correlação entre a banda K e os filtros estreitos. No último capítulo discutimos as possibilidades de uso da câmara num contexto geral.
We present a photometric study of near infrared photometric systems, paying special attention to the PRONEX/IAG-USP Near Infrared Camera (CamIV) photometric system. From the best estimates for the characteristics of the Pico dos Dias Observatory, at Laboratório Nacional de Astrofísica (OPD/LNA), as well as the manufacturers instrumental data for both the filter sets and detector, we used the synthetic photometry method to describe and characterize the CamIV's photometric system. We show the camera's performance, by using the NGC 6809 and NGC 6751 J and H photometry. We used the narrow band filter set for photometry of standard stars in order to present a statistical correlation between the K broad band magnitudes and the narrow band magnitudes. The dissertation is organized as follows: in the Introduction, we describe how to characterize a photometric system, specially a near infrared photometric system. In Chapter two we present the camera and the major optics characteristics details. In Chapter three we describe the synthetic photometry method and its usefullness. Chapter four shows the camera behaviour with the use of both the broad band filter set, and the narrow baud filter sct and prcscnts the relationship between the narrow band filter set and the catalogued K magnitude for some standard stars. In the last Chapter we discuss the possibilites of further usage of the camera.

Abstract:
La siguiente investigación pretende aportar a la validez de constructo y a la confiabilidad del instrumento OPD en su segunda versión (OPD – 2). Este estudio se llevó a cabo a partir de una evaluación realizada por 15 alumnos del diplomado OPD 2007/2008 a un caso videado en dos momentos distintos, mientras se entrenaban (Octubre 2008) y tres meses después de finalizado el entrenamiento (Junio 2008). Se compararon las evaluaciones de ellos con las de un experto para corroborar que el aprendizaje se considerara válido, y se compararon los resultados inter-evaluadores, para corroborar la confiabilidad de éstos. Los resultados no permiten afirmar que el entrenamiento hubiera influido en los evaluadores al punto que se pudiera pesquisar estadísticamente su influencia, no obstante, sí se puede afirmar que habrían logrado un aprendizaje clínicamente relevante, en el establecimiento del diagnóstico y de un foco para la indicación terapéutica. Por otro lado, los resultados obtenidos en el cálculo de la confiabilidad, se condicen con los estudios revisados en la literatura

Abstract:
The waiting time is a major challenge for government hospitals around the world, particularly in developing countries, due to inefficient design and limited facilities. This waiting time causes long queues, especially in service providing facilities. Hence, queuing is considered a key performance indicator when evaluating the performance of healthcare facilities. The outpatient department (OPD) is the main division of a hospital that handles a large number of patients daily. This research aimed to provide solutions for minimising waiting time in OPD premises through efficient planning and designing strategies. This study applied the queuing theory for two case studies to analyse the waiting time of the patients at the OPD. Hospital records and field observations were used to gather data. Further solutions for minimising the waiting time were identified using semi-structured interviews with hospital management and a questionnaire survey with patients at OPD. Field observations revealed that there were long waiting queues and long waiting times at the registration counter and the consultant rooms. Due to increased demand for OPD services, unnecessary arrivals, a lack of resources, and patients’ ignorance of OPD procedures were identified as causes of overcrowding. Further, to minimise waiting time at the OPD, it should leverage the efficient designs with properly placed inquiry counters, walkways, and directions; provide adequate facilities such as a spacious waiting area, and restructuring should be implemented. The findings of the research mark valuable insights into government hospitals, and the proposed solutions will be useful for hospital management.

Abstract:
We have examined stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) wavefront reconstruction with a continuously variable aberrator. A tripled single-longitudinal-mode YAG laser at 355 nm was used. The 10-ns laser pulse width was approximately twice the phonon lifetime of liquid hexane (the SBS medium), and the pulse energy was varied from SBS threshold to ~20 times threshold. No light pipes or phase plates were used. The aberrator produced continuously variable optical path differences (OPDs) from 0.14λ to 2.5λ (peak to valley). For pulses with 20 times threshold energy, the SBS accurately reconstructed the wavefront, independent of pump aberration for OPDs from 0.14λ to 2.5λ. For pulses with 7 times threshold energy, the SBS accurately reconstructed the wavefront for OPDs from 0.14λ to 1.3λ, but the fidelity monotonically declined for larger OPD. For pulses slightly above threshold, the fidelity was constant for a lower range of OPDs and declined for large OPD. At all intensities, the decline in fidelity was distinct from a decline in reflectivity, which was observed as the aberrator reduced the pump focal intensity. The onset of fidelity decline always occurred during stronger aberrations than the onset of reflectivity decline.

The concept of using a phased array of small, inexpensive telescopes to achieve high angular resolution of faint, distant objects is nothing new, but the practical considerations of alignment and cophasing has always limited its implementation. To be effective, the coupling of white light from these telescopes must be done in such a way as to achieve zero optical path difference (OPD) between the object being studied, the telescopes, and the point of beam recombination. In practice, this has always been very difficult due to (1.) static and time varying OPD errors from mechanical sources, (2.) large but predictable OPD shifts due to geometrical aspects of the telescopic array, and, (3.) rapid atmospheric turbulence based OPD modulations. In addition to phase errors, one must also deal with time varying mechanical and turbulence based angular misalignments of the beams.

Abstract:
Hybridization of Back cross is one method to get varieties that are resistant to downy mildew. The purpose of this study was to obtain information on inheritance characteristics of downy mildew resistance. This research was conducted at the experiment center of Agro-Technology Study Program of Agriculture Faculty, University of Trunojoyo Madura. Research of Assessment of resistance to Downy Mildew used a randomized block design with 18 treatments (P1, P2, F1, F2, BC1P1 and BC1P2 in three sets of crosses, namely LGL x Mdr-3, T12 x Mdr-1 and E02 x Mdr-2) and three replications so there were 54 experimental units. Identification of polymorphic RAPD markers for endurance to downy mildew through Bulk Segregant Analysis (BSA) was done by amplifying the DNA in the resistant pool and susceptible pool. The random primers used were 120 primers from 6 operon groups, namely OPA, OPB, OPC, OPD, OPF and OPG. The results showed that the inheritance pattern of maize genetic resistance to downy mildew followed a segregation pattern of 3:1 with a degree of dominance between -1 and 0, and was controlled by incomplete partially negative dominant gene. OPC-07 was a marker that was linkage close to the resistance to downy mildew with a genetic distance of 1.9 cM.
