Abstract:
When should you engage with difficult arguments against your cherished controversial beliefs? The primary conclusion of this book is that your obligations to engage with counterarguments are more limited than is often thought. In some standard situations, you shouldn’t engage with difficult counterarguments and, if you do, you shouldn’t engage with them open-mindedly. This conclusion runs counter to aspects of the Millian political tradition and political liberalism, as well as some of the informal logic literature on argumentation. Not all misleading arguments wear their flaws on their sleeve. Each step of a misleading argument might seem compelling and you might not be able to figure out what’s wrong with it. Still, even if you can’t figure out what’s wrong with an argument, you can know that it’s misleading. One way to know that an argument is misleading is, counterintuitively, to lack expertise in the methods and evidence types employed by the argument. When you know that a counterargument is misleading, you shouldn’t engage with it open-mindedly and sometimes shouldn’t engage with it at all. You shouldn’t engage open-mindedly because you shouldn’t be willing to reduce your confidence in response to arguments you know are misleading. And you sometimes shouldn’t engage closed-mindedly, because to do so can be manipulative or ineffective. In making this case, the book discusses echo chambers and group polarization, the importance in academic writing of a sympathetic case for the opposition, the epistemology of disagreement, the account of open-mindedness, and invitations to problematic academic speakers.

Abstract:
The force of ‘Shakespeare’ as a source of cultural authority in South Africa has been extensively discussed. This chapter looks at a phenomenon that is less often acknowledged: the persistence of directorial power in post-apartheid Shakespearean performance. Renewed ties with British theatre after apartheid brought actors and directors trained in a more actor-centred approach into dialogue with local theatre practitioners, but this did little to shift South African Shakespeare away from dependence on spectacle and on directors as inheritors of institutional power. Focusing on South African performances in 2011 and 2012 across the different institutional spaces in which Shakespeare is made to work (theatres, schools, and prisons), in productions that promise to create democratic, liberating, ‘open’ Shakespeare, one finds both defiance and a striking restatement of the status quo. While connections with British theatre give authority and legitimacy to post-apartheid performances, the potential for ‘open Shakespeare’ has been squelched.

Abstract:
Open Hearts, Closed Doors examines the 40 years following the restrictive Immigration Act of 1924 and how white, mainline Protestants considered immigrants and refugees during this period. During these years the Great Depression, World War II, and the Cold War elevated the importance of immigration and American national identity. Mainline Protestants were accustomed to serving as cultural gatekeepers for much of US history, but they found their hold on an increasingly diverse American society much more tenuous as the twentieth century unfolded. Evident in their home missions and political lobbying, mainline Protestants approached pluralism with both apprehension and hope. Mainline Protestants responded to immigrants and refugees with both a conservative concern over the impact they would have on the nation and a steady resolve to incorporate immigrants into American society, while also challenging the racism that was enshrined in immigration policy. By 1965, when such policy was overturned, mainline Protestants continued to support a measure of cultural diversity while still working to maintain the nation’s Protestant identity. In short, they arrived at a pluralistic bargain. This history helps account for the waning influence of mainline Protestantism in American society and its role in shaping a more diverse nation.
