Abstract:
The concentrations, distributions, and associated risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils of dumpsite and its vicinities were investigated. Composite samples were taken from the dumpsite and distances (15, 30, 60, 90, 120m) away from the foot of the dumpsite; as well as from a control site (2000m away). The determinations of PAHs were done with gas chromatography couple to mass spectrometer (GC-MS) after extractions with dichloromethane (DCM) and a silica gel clean-up. Total PAHs (Σ16PAHs) concentrations in the dumpsite soil and that of the control were 930.05, and 31.15 µg/k

Dumping of refuse in poorly sited dumpsites is a major problem in Nigeria, especially in rural areas, and this poses a potential hazard to the health of people around and the environment. These dumpsites provide a suitable breeding site for many microorganisms, flies, mosquitoes, hookworm, and some rodents which transmit diseases. Therefore, the study was designed to determine the composition of refuse at LEA primary school dumpsite, Woodwox dumpsite, Solid rock refuse dump, Sector F refuse dump, Tudun wada refuse dumpsite in Lugbe and the effects of the dumps on the health of the residents. This study aims to understand the soil impacts of illegal dumpsites in Malaysia through quantifying the heavy metals in the soil of two dumpsites, one receiving construction waste and the other receiving municipal solid waste. Five soil samples were collected from each dumpsite, and sampling was repeated in the second week to examine the temporal changes in the levels of heavy metals. All sampling was conducted in triplicates. The soil samples were sieved, dried, and digested with aqua regia at 70 °C, after which the digested mixtures were filtered. Poverty in its many guises - poor housing, no employment, indifferent health and hunger is a driving force for scavenging. In most developing countries, the informal recovery of material from waste is a common survival strategy for the poor. In fact, up to 2% of populations in developing countries depend on recovering, re-using and selling waste materials from streets, dumpsite or landfills for their livelihood. The aim of this study was to develop an understanding of the socio-economic conditions affecting the scavengers and scavenging activities at the Hulene dumpsite in Maputo. This study s

The open dumpsite is frequently chosen as the trash disposal option in most emerging economies, yet it poses serious environmental risks. Mahanadi River Basin (MRB) is one of Odisha’s most heavily populated by agriculture and drinking, particularly for human consumption and farming. It faces severe surface water quality and quantity constraints. Water assessment indices such as Criteria Importance through Inter-criteria Correlation (CRITIC) and MCDM techniques like Complex Proportional Assessment (COPRAS) have been employed in the evaluation of water quality for human use, using integrated tec

Millions of tons of forest residues, agricultural residues, and municipal solid waste are generated in Latin America (LATAM) each year. Regularly, municipal solid waste is diverted to landfills or dumpsites. Meanwhile, forest and agricultural residues end up decomposing in the open air or burnt, releasing greenhouse gases. Those residues can be transformed into a set of energy vectors and organic/chemical products through thermochemical conversion processes, such as pyrolysis and gasification.
