Abstract:
AbstractWhat has been truly extraordinary today is that China has gone through the long history of the difficult journey and now finally has attained a development status that has to be recognized and appreciated. Millions of Chinese have now come out of poverty. Unemployment is decreasing and inequality will decrease in the course of time by managing it with appropriate policy. What Africa should learn is how China achieved this status and managed how to deal with and respond to the global economy. The best gift China can give to Africa is to share frankly and honestly how the Chinese managed the difficult journey and achieved such a globally renowned success, especially building science, technology and innovation capabilities. The other important lesson from China is to relate with Africa entirely driven by the principle of mutual benefit. The gains and losses in the relationship must be fully transparent, open, tangible, explicit, measurable and fully known. What China can try to do is assist Africans to engage in an economic and political marathon race to be fully de-colonized now. The assistance that Africa has from China by promoting the win-win mutually beneficial relationship should be a role model and an example. China’s engagement in Africa has attracted a lot of interest around the globe. China is accused of stacking up debt in Africa. There is a need to do serious research to bring out the evidence-based standard yardstick anchored side in the relationship and not rely on media and opinion to distract us to know what we must know. In this context, this book aims to present research studies from across Africa shedding light on various interdisciplinary aspects of China-Africa collaborations in science, technology, and innovation.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract In the early job search models of Mortensen (1970a,b) and McCall {1970), variation in the arrival rate of offers played no role in producing variation in unemployment spell lengths. For a fixed cost, the worker received one draw from a known wage distribution each period. Accordingly, this assumption was adopted in early empirical search studies (e.g., Ehrenberg and Oaxaca, 1976; Kiefer and Neumann, I 979a,b, 1981). With the length of a period left undefined, however, this assumption seems arbitrary when turning to the data. A stochastic offer arrival process seems more appropriate-perhaps with the parameters of the process modeled as functions of worker behavior and labor market opportunities. In earlier chapters, we discussed a few studies that attempt to estimate the parameters of the arrival process in the absence of any direct evidence on the frequency of offers or search strategies. Genera1ly, the findings indicate an important role for the arrival rate in producing variation in unemployment spell durations across workers. The findings of these studies open the question of why arrival rates might vary across workers. That is, they do not indicate whether the arrival rate variation reflects variation in search intensity or strategy or variation in demand.

Abstract:
This chapter builds a multi-sector labor market model including wage dualism, open unemployment, underemployment, on-the-job search, and expected wage equalization. The innovative feature of this model is the distinction between the ex ante allocation of the labor force among search strategies and the ex post allocation of the labor force among labor market outcomes. Among the findings are: more efficient on-the-job search lowers the equilibrium unemployment rate; in a rational expectations equilibrium, the average rural and urban wages will not be equal; modern sector enlargement may leave labor market conditions in one of the sectors unchanged, even when wages and employment in that sector are fully flexible.

Abstract:
This chapter compares the performances of multiple Big Data techniques applied for time series forecasting and traditional time series models on three Big Data sets. The traditional time series models, Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA), and exponential smoothing models are used as the baseline models against Big Data analysis methods in the machine learning. These Big Data techniques include regression trees, Support Vector Machines (SVM), Multilayer Perceptrons (MLP), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), and long short-term memory neural networks (LSTM). Across three time series data sets used (unemployment rate, bike rentals, and transportation), this study finds that LSTM neural networks performed the best. In conclusion, this study points out that Big Data machine learning algorithms applied in time series can outperform traditional time series models. The computations in this work are done by Python, one of the most popular open-sourced platforms for data science and Big Data analysis.

Abstract:
Purpose: The chapter identifies channels of COVID-19’s impact on the economy. The empirical part presents and assesses the consecutive reactions of inflation, industrial production, the unemployment rate, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate and shifts in GDP expenditure structure on the COVID-driven disturbances and policies designed and implemented. A new research dimension covers the central banks’ monetary policy, long-term bond yields and real effective exchange rates. Design/methodology/approach: A complete standard Keynesian macroeconomic model is used as the conceptual framework of revisited studies on the adverse shocks triggered by the pandemic. In the empirical part, comparative analyses of reactions of the same group of six European countries, namely France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Hungary and Poland and two major large open economies of the USA and Japan are done. Findings: The real shocks transmitted to the demand and supply sides were mostly neutralised; countries protected their levels of employment and consumption. However, the real economy’s restored stability was achieved at a significant cost of inflation, higher public debt and hikes in the cost of debt servicing. Practical implications: The analytical framework and empirical analyses have a potential value as a case study in economic policy design and appraisal. Originality and value: The original empirical analyses extended to the monetary policy domain offer a comprehensive perspective on the real and nominal disturbances and policies implemented to stabilise the economies.
