Abstract:
Once a year an event is being held at the fluid physics lab at KTH. One of the main purposes of this event is to awaken an interest in the visiting students from other universities, by demonstrating fluid physics phenomena. Showing the transition from laminar to turbulent flow in an open water channel is one of the demonstrations. This will give the students a feel for the theoretical Reynolds number. The existing water table used for this purpose was lacking in some areas. The purpose of this project is to construct, design and test a rig for openwater channel flow which can be used for the e

The water quality model includes unsteady discharge equations and continuity equation of concentration. Because the De Saint Venant equations which contain the continuity and momentum equations, and the continuity equation of contraction are nonlinear partial differential equations, it is difficult to obtain the exact solution. In this study, a linearized analytical technique is provided, not only apply to the scheme of the nonlinear di

A depth-averaged horizontal 2-D model has the capability of simulating the long-distanced longitudinal variations of flow characteristics, as well as the lateral variations of channel cross sections. The purpose of the study is to develop a depth-averaged horizontal 2-D hydraulic and sediment transport model. Careful laboratory experiments have shown that these water surface waves are not well-known gravity or capillary waves but are caused by a different physical phenomenon. In the flow conditions studied, the shear present in shallow flows generates flow structures, which rise and impact on the water-air interface. It is shown that the spatial correlation function observed for these water s

A reliability-based method for analyzing open drainage channels and detention basins using the full marginal distributions of uncertain parameters together with correlation coefficients will be presented in this work. A first and second order component reliability analysis will be performed using the computer program CALREL. Reliability results can be used both in performance and safety assessment of existing structures and in designing structures for a target reliability level. For the case of an open drainage channel, the computed reliability index will be compared with the usual safety fact

The numerical model is to solve the shallow water equations (SWE) based on smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). The Lagrangian concepts of slice water particles (SWP) and cylindrical water particles (CWP) are adopted in the 1D SPH-SWE and 2D SPH-SWE formulations to generate horizontal flows and water surface variations in rivers and floodplains.
