The main purpose of this thesis is to develop two-phase simulations using OpenFOAM. Two different situations are studied: open and closed channel flow. Different parameters are changed in each case to obtain different results, such as the inclination of the channel and the values of the velocity inlets for each phase. When dealing with the open-channel flow different inclinations are simulated and the influence of the Froude number is analyzed. The results obtained are compared with the analytical solution obtained from the Navier-Stokes equation and also with experimental results from studies

Abstract:
The present thesis explores the viability of the proper generalised decomposition (PGD) as a tool for parametric studies in a daily industrial environment. Starting from the equations modelling incompressible flows, the separated formulation of the equations, the development of a parametric solver, the implementation in a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, OpenFOAM, and a numerical validation are presented. The parametrised Stokes and Oseen flows are used as an initial step to test the applicability of the PGD to flow problems. The rationale for the construc- tion of a

Abstract:
Due to the growing demand for comfort, the noise generated by HVAC components should be considered by the designers. Flow induced noise is one of the major contributors to the noise in HVAC systems. By means of computational aero-acoustics(CAA), the mechanism of noise generationis able to be studiedin the design phase. This research has been conducted based on a simplified HVAC duct, aiming to validate a hybrid method in CAA. The hybrid method is an affordable and promising approach for industrial applications. CFD simulation, as the first step of the hybrid method, has been performed. Due to

The purpose of this study is to evaluate how well the RANS models implemented in the open-source software OpenFOAM performs when simulating flow around a NACA 4412 airfoil with a turbulent boundary layer. After assessing the different models and performing several tests, the Spalart Allmaras model was chosen to be the best candidate for this airfoil. The model was validated against several different references, including a flying-hot-wire study by Coles and Wadcock [5] for a chord based Reynolds number of 1.500.000, and a Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) performed by Vinuesa et al. This thesis presents the development of a novel numerical model capable of evaluating suspended sediment dynamics under breaking waves, and is based in the open source Computational Fluid Dynamics software, OpenFOAM®. The hydrodynamics were determined by solving the incompressible, Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations for a two-phase fluid using the Finite Volume method, along with a Volume of Fluid scheme that modelled the interface between the air and water phases. A new library of five turbulence models was developed to include weakly compressible effects through the introduction of de

Abstract:
A proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell is an electrolytic cell that converts chemical energy of hydrogen reacting with oxygen into electrical energy, without producing any greenhouse gases. To meet increasingly stringent application needs, improved performance and increased efficiency are paramount. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is an ideal means for achieving these improvements. In this thesis, a comprehensive CFD-based numerical toolbox that can accurately simulate the major transport phenomena which take place within a PEM fuel cell is presented. The tool is developed using the Ope
